Quick info about Sentinels and Guides

~ A Sentinel is a person with enhanced senses (touch, sight, hearing, smelling, and taste), due to the enhanced senses it can become very overwhelming - similar to pulling a muscle, that can happen with their senses being too overstimulated

~ Guides help to ground and calm a Sentinel

~ Together they can help control and focus a Sentinel's abilities as well

Check out this cool Sentinels and Guides info post if you don't know what they are, the person does a great job explaining things

Now rambling time

Edwin is a Sentinel and Charles is a Guide

Overall Sentinels and Guides are rarities here, they were less known about during Edwin's time and were shunned - during Charles' time there was more knowledge on them but they still weren't really accepted by everyone - then modern day there's definitely better acceptance compared to the past + laws/rights protecting them

While Edwin was alive, he didn't have a Guide, but had some control to not get too overwhelmed due to his enhanced senses (or at least not show it around others, otherwise he'd definitely hear about it from his family)

But Hell threw that bit of control and composure out the window with how intense it was.

He thought that with escaping he'd be able to get some reprieve, but he still feels too much, and there's so many new things around him that it takes awhile to attempt adjusting.

Then he stumbles onto Charles and things start to feel a little less, more comfortable and controlled.

When Charles dies, they learn that he can't feel things like before, which they assume is the norm for ghosts. BUT he can feel Edwin perfectly fine, especially after bonding. He only has senses when it regards Edwin, like for example he can smell Edwin's ghostly hair pomade. Plus Charles is able to detect him nearby.

(I hc that a lot of ghost's senses are dulled or seem off compared to when alive, like touching things feel odd or smells seem dulled - so Charles would follow that logic + the special added bonus of properly feeling Edwin and his senses being able to detect Edwin due to being his Guide)

They learn that Edwin has all of his enhanced senses in tact, so for example he's still capable of tasting/eating but doesn't need to eat since he's a ghost so he doesn't see a point in doing it unless if it's necessary for a case (sometimes Edwin wishes he could give that capability to Charles since Charles reminisces and misses food a lot)

During the beginning, they basically had to stay attached at the hip. Anytime they'd tried to do something separately, Edwin would get spikes or zone-out frequently. Edwin hated feeling so useless plus thinking that he's trapped Charles where he won't move on due to Edwin's reliance on him - Charles does enjoy being around Edwin, he also really enjoys that he can feel and sense him, he's now in a world that he can't properly feel things like when alive but then there's Edwin as his beacon, but sometimes he worries that he's just using Edwin to feel something like 'Am I touching him too much, is he uncomfortable and just not saying anything?'

Things improve overtime where they can go do their own thing from time to time, but still just usually default to sticking together. They started taking on cases especially since Edwin's enhanced senses seemed perfect for it.

Also at first they bond and see it as plantonic.

It isn't till Crystal comes around which causes Edwin to have more territorial/protective instincts and jealousy come out regarding Charles + all of the stuff in Port Townsend, that they start to think about taking it further towards it being romantic.

(Bonus: Crystal thinking they're already together cause they constantly touch each other and have been caught cuddling together)

Then combining the wing au idea with the Sentinel/Guide stuff

So here Sentinels and Guides are also born with wings, at times it's used as a way to help easily spot others (So for example, in modern day if an unbonded Sentinel might be having a spike or zone-out, others might seek out the nearest person with wings who is an unbonded Guide to assist the Sentinel)

Edwin has the wings of a Little Owl and Charles has the wings of a Laggar Falcon

When alive, Edwin was to bind his wings and hide them so others wouldn't see them, only able to have them out in private. Then while in Hell, he had to learn the habit of keeping his wings tucked very close to his body or else they would be a huge liability.

Charles keeps his wings out since he finds them cool, but also tries his best to keep them under control. Too many instances of him getting too excited and his wings accidentally knocking something over... his dad wasn't happy.. (His dad hates his wings, but his mom praises how beautiful they are)

After they meet and Edwin binds his wings out of habit, Charles immediately puts a stop to it cause that CAN'T be healthy. But Edwin will still keep them closely tucked to his body.

Edwin has found that when Charles helps him calm down, he quite enjoys when Charles wraps his wings around him to encompass both of them. It helps block things out.

Then it took awhile, mainly due to Edwin not being as open about his wings, where they help preen/groom each other's wings

Edwin was used to making do on his own, while Charles usually had help from his mom. So it started with Charles asking for help, then Charles saw what Edwin was doing and decided that boy needs help (like 'Edwin this spot is an absolute mess cause you can't reach it properly, I'm helping you')

I loved the description given in the request, so I had to use it in the finished entry. :) I can imagine this is after a mission gone wrong- the twins are both arguing over who messed up worse- Mikey's silently pointing with a horrified expression at the growing flames in the background, Lotus is frantically trying to save the stray cats near the blazing building they just ran out of- and Leo's just taking a fricking MILISECOND to breathe and process all of the chaos that's occurring around him. After that cherished exhale, he pulls himself up by his katana straps and goes to check the damages of the fire on his team.

HDG Fic that never will be

Hello internet HDG fans and my poor followers who have to see this

I've recently fallen down the HDG fic rabbit hole (WELLNESS CHECK DID THIS TO ME) and reading about the Affini and the Compact and the universe on the wiki have got a bunch of wheels turning in my brain. I got bit by the fic writing bug and started drawing up an outline for a fic idea I had.

However, as I thought about it more, I started to realise this probably wasn't a fic I should write or that might be controversial because it would violate one of the universe guidelines. I figured I may as well make a post talking about it and hopefully get some feedback before I move on to actually spending hours writing thousands of words. Explanation under the cut.

The fic I'm thinking of is an Affini POV. Basically there's a case worker who works to help organise all the affini-floret paperwork, keeps track of the "Notices of Intent to Domesticate", checks in on "independent" Sophonts who are struggling, etc etc. Its also about the wider Compact, about the case worker taking a critical look at their culture and their ideology and potential conflicts that might arise from that. Its looking at the Affini Compact as a kind of "pet rescue" situation, and examining the issues that arise in that context.

So for example, what happens when there's a perfectly dramatic meow-meow or Autistic Trans Girl Who Stinks Good (tm) and like eight different Affini all want them as their Floret? Or how human Pinnates or Pluribuses are less likely to be "adopted" by Affini because they're more difficult and complex to care for? What happens when there's a queer polycule, three of whom are Pluribuses and two of whom are seriously disabled, who SOMEHOW made it through the Accord and are now struggling even in the post-scarcity society of the Affini? They obviously need help but most Affini are reluctant at best to take on that much responsibility.

What happens when an Affini gets bored of their Floret (*gasp*) and wants to give them up? Humans are the most recent acquisition by the Compact and are considered especially cute/domesticable, what happens when human Florets are a "fad"? Do Affini ever trade Florets, temporarily or otherwise?

And what about all the humans who AREN'T Autistic Trans Girls Who Stink Good(tm) or poor exploited military personnel who need domesticating? The "silent majority" of middle class/straight humans for whom life in the Accord was good (as long as they kept their heads down and ratted out their neighbours)? The "boring" ones. Would the Affini even be interested in them?

This is the kind of thing I want to write about. Its really got me humming along, but I'm also aware this kind of messes with one of the big guidelines for the universe - that the Affini are always "perfect". They're centuries/millennia old and are incredibly intelligent, so understand the needs and wants of their charges so perfectly they don't need or understand consent. They know you better than you know yourself, virtually gods compared to human flaws and imperfections.

But my fic would look at the Affini as people - as characters who have quirks and preferences and can make mistakes. As beings who can misunderstand you in important ways. It would be Affini interacting with other Affini, it would be comparing how different Affini treat their Florets. As I understand it, that kind of flies in the face of what the Affini are supposed to be as a concept.

I'm interested in HDG but I'm not interested in writing something that ends up being on the same tier as "Muh Spess Mehreens Could Totally Kill A Bunch Of Big Plants For Real" (shut up no they couldn't, the Compact runs on Saitama rules, your Space Marines are happy lil action figures shooting at each other with Nerf Bolters in the Space Marine Enrichment Centre). Its a really cool universe but I don't want to try and use it for something it was never intended for, I understand its got a fairly narrow focus normally.

So I thought I'd make a post about it to test the waters and see how the community reacts. Please if there are any fans or writers who see this post, I could really use some feedback. Anything you suggest is appreciated!

About affni and paternalism

They give implants that grown of themselves that connect to the entire nervous system of a pet and allow remote intuitive mind control

They are very literally making pets into their limbs

In this sense, it deeply resembles how ancient greek slavers considered themselves virtuous for holding a position of "I'd care and treat my slave like my own hand. They are people as they are an extension of me, a person" all the value and agency comes from the owner.

So what I'm leading to is that all affni/sophont sex is quite literally masturbation

I think that they may very well abolish slavery in favour of hive mind. They already have mental links with pets. Simply removing hierarchy wouldn't necessarily break this link. Just give equal ownership of a body affni and pets share disproportionately

CURRENT TEAM

your three strongest demon cards + your three strongest memory cards of each sin (aka your top 3!) -> head to Contacts, filter for only one attribute and sort by strength to get your top 3 demon cards, then repeat for your memory cards. Rinse and repeat for every attribute If one character shows up multiple times in your top 3 demon cards, only count his strongest card and ignore the rest!

DREAM TEAM

the cards you want to use in the long-run. Ideally they should all be either UR or UR+ cards

HOW TO ENTER YOUR CARD DATA

Head to the sheet called 'card data'. Here you'll find seven charts that are all colored differently depending on what sin they are for

First off, each chart is divided into the following sections:

[1] dream team demon cards

[2] dream team memory cards

[3] current team demon cards

[4] current team memory cards

Here's a quick run-down on all you need to know, but I'll also be going over it step by step a bit further below:

CARD enter who the demon card is of, or any name you associate with your memory card

TOP 3? if it's one of your three strongest cards, check the box; you don't need to re-enter the relevant data below if this box is checked. If it's not, enter the card data of one of your current team cards below it

MAX SIN UP? have you unlocked all of the Devil's Tree sin ups that you can get at your current skill level? If so, check the box

LEVEL enter your card's level

SKILL enter your card's skill level

STRENGTH enter your card's overall strength; sort by 'strenght' in Contacts to get this value

CARD, STRENGTH same as above, this for your current team. Only enter the card data if needed

STEP BY STEP

1. Figure out what cards you want to use in the long run; In my case, that would be Lucifer, Satan and Asmodeus

2. Head to Contacts in the game, select an attribute and sort by 'strength' to determine your three strongest cards

3. Go to the correspinding chart on the spreadsheet. Pick the characters in your dream team from the drop-down menu. The order you enter them in doesn't matter

Check the box for 'top 3?' if they are also one of your three strongest cards. If not, enter the card from the current team below

Your chart should then look something like this:

4. If you have unlocked all the sin ups in the Devil's Tree that you can get with your current skill level, check this box

5. Enter the displayed overall card strength and the current skill level. Click on the card to see its level current level, and then enter that as well

6. Repeat the process for your memory cards

Once you're done, the chart should look something like this:

8. Once you're done, head to the sheet 'rec & ranking'

RANKING & RECOMMENDATION

RANKING

just a little ranking to show you how your sins are doing because I thought it'd be cool to have :] Keep in mind that it can't properly display ties tho! You'll have to enter all card data for it to work properly

RECOMMENDATION

The recommendation will tell you what order you should level your sins in, what cards you should level, what level and skill level to raise them to, and if you should work on its Devil's Tree first

But first, you need to configure the settings for your recommendation. You can choose

if you want demon and memory cards to be displayed seperately (overwritten only if you choose to display all sins)

how many sins should be displayed

if your current team should be factored into, or if it should be based purely on your dream team

Personally, I'd recommend going with seperated, display all sins (weakest to strongest), and to factor the current team in, but you can change it around to what best fits your needs

When I'm just skimming through tumblr posts, I occasionally wonder why you post about people writing fic for the National Health Service, and why anyone on this Earth would feel the need to take to AO3 to express their love/frustration for said National Health Service.
