THE POTATO LAB
GENRES: Romance, Comedy
SUMMARY: A corporate merger threatens to end the productivity of a rural potato research lab but manufactures a new romance in return.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Potatoes, puppies, vending machine sikhye, workplace bullying, romantic betrayal, missing baby cows, emergency preparedness, OCD, acceptance, found families, princesses, spying, men posing seductively, X-rated manhwas, failing coffee shops, and rural village comforts.
HOT TAKE: This one tried to do a lot and I'm not sure if it really landed anything of value. It was a easy to swallow rom-com with a stretch of a backdrop plot. At least they made potato farming interesting?
What it did do is provide a vehicle for Kang Tae Oh to suppress most of the acting ability he's known for and at the same time remind us in more than half the episodes that his post-military physique looks great in both wet and dry business suits.
It tried to combine the 'emotionally cold-but-physically hot boss' trope with the 'quirky-but-down to earth subordinate' trope and neither really stuck the landing.
Did Kang Tae Oh's character truly grow as a person enough for this romance to work? It was confusing at times to see his stiff, awkward demeanor often so juxtaposed with composed, sexually-charged body language when times between MLs got intimate. Was that a refreshing commentary on how we as humans contain multitudes (both mentally and motivationally), or just poor character development?
I do appreciate how everyone in this show had their own flaws to deal with (and dealt with them in due time), communication was timely, honest, and open, and Lee Sun Bin's character was steadfast in her confidence when interacting with her ex-boyfriend.

"If I really was kind, I wouldn't be here. In my head, I'm saying, 'You shouldn't be here. Go home.' When you went out to get the beer, I was like, 'Now is your chance, go home.' But it's all just in my head. My body won't move. I like being with you too much. I really like you a lot, Mr. Han. To the point where I wish everyone else in the world would just disappear and only the two of us would be left."

Because This Is My First Life
Synopsis:
Who has time for love when finances are on the mind? Nam Sae Hee (Lee Min Ki) is a socially awkward man in his early 30s who has spent his life’s savings purchasing his own house. While he can now be called the master of his own home, his finances are in a sorry state and his job as an IT employee provides him with next to no disposable income after paying off his mortgage. Yoon Ji Ho (Jung So Min), also in her 30s, is a homeless writer who barely makes enough to feed herself. Dating is the last thing on the mind for these financially strapped singles. Through a turn of events, Ji Ho comes to rent a place to stay in Sae Hee’s house and they find themselves as landlord and tenant... and married?
The Best Things About This Drama:
Park Byung Eun
The ensemble cast
The poetry
I'll give it a 4/5. I have watched this drama twice and I enjoyed it both times. What you expect to be a quirky rom-com slowly evolves into a beautiful poem about relationships, love, and marriage. The performances are all amazing, and the range of emotions you experience are both heart-wrenching and gratifying.

DRAMA REVIEW | King The Land (2023)
Tumblr media
King the Land follows the traditional troupe of classic contemporary romances involving a Chaebol and Candy leads but this drama gives it a new life and breath to the story by making the characters (all of them) well rounded, with background stories, and agency.
Won is a great leading man. At first he comes across like any other chaebol character but quickly you realize he's nothing like it. He's confident, not cocky, has good manners and treats everything fair and square. Those who cross him had it coming tbh and even then he doesn't resent them for what they did. He simply puts them in their place.
Sarang comes from a working class family, and her parents passed away, but she never feels inferior to anyone and treats people with sincerity. She's also an independent, fun and lovely young woman who likes to go dancing with her friends, date and hanging out with her grandma. Sarang it's not, under any circumstances, the typical Candy heroine shouldering a hard, pitiful life. Sarang's life is full of color, warmth and joy.
Pyung Hwa, Da-eul, Ro-woon and Sang-sik complete the found family group of friends and they are equally enjoyable to watch. They all have strong, nuance personalities and have to deal with their own issues. They are not just background decoration for the leads to rely on when something happens.
The story is solid, angst free and really fun to watch. It's nothing new but, at the same time, the characters make it feel fresh. I particularly enjoyed the soundtrack, which I found to be perfectly placed at all the right moments. The cinematography it's also good, editing and directing wise there's no complains.
Overall, I recommend this drama to fans of rom-coms looking for a quality watch!

King the Land. 7-8 (first half 8)
Story: 6
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 9
Comparable to: What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim (kdrama); A Business Proposal (kdrama); the Secret Life of my Secretary (kdrama); Just You (Taiwanese drama)
I know this is a big fan favorite among a lot of kdrama fans, but for some reason it just didn’t click with me which surprised the heck out of me considering this genre is right up my alley especially with having Lee Junho in it. Nonetheless, I really did enjoy the first half of it and for the second half I felt like it was a clunker. Way too draggy and unnecessary moments, I don’t know something felt off with it after-awhile. I felt more glued to the secondary couples romance than the leads (felt repetitive and lackluster) I guess I wish they expanded more on the secondary characters, especially for the one with her lousy asshat husband who deserved a far better outcome. Overall this romcom if you haven’t seen it yet will be either a giant hit with most or a giant sleeper for others.

THE ROYAL GAMBLER
GENRES: Historical, Drama
SUMMARY: A young man, separated from his royal family at birth, reconnects with his brother and stands as the voice of the people.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Gambling, scheming gisaengs, deadbeat fathers, palace brainwashing, training montages, rebellion thwarting, opium incense, assassins, young love, gangsters, setting houses on fire, and good meals.
HOT TAKE: This show does not disappoint on the title. Any chance they can throw some gambling into a scene, they will do it. There's some great familiar faces and some even greater individual performances, despite the dragged-out plot.
