#JackedKirby - Welcome to Lemuria! 🗿🗿🗿 So I am currently on a deep dive into Kirby’s Eternals series from the late 70s and I am FLOORED by the amount of beautiful splash pages and unorthodox layouts he used to illustrate this series! When you have a concept that is all about Gods, Monsters and the history of the world the art is gonna be big... and Kirby utilized every inch of the pages at his disposal. 🌊🌊🌊 Take this beautiful underwater city that Deviant Krona And Eternal Thena travel to in #Issue8 of the series (published in February of 1977). This is the sunken city of Lemuria, a Deviant stronghold and major city for the villainous race in the Eternals world. But the lost city of Lemuria was discussed in Marvel comics before, in Sub Mariners late 60s series. It is also utilized in the many “Cthulhu’s Mythos” based on the works if HP Lovecraft. 🗿🌊🗿 As Krona and Thena approach in their sub we see a giant stone face on the bottom of the ocean floor (Pic 1), which a door opens and the ship entered through one of its eyes. Inside we get the magical, mystical world of Kirby’s Lemuria!!! 🌊🗿🌊 Once a proud city of the Deviants above the waves, the city of Lemuria was sunken during the Great Cataclysm or the Second Host of the Celestials. When the Celestials came to Earth to check on the progress of everyone, the Deviants fought them... and as a punishment the Celestials laid waste to their city and sunk it to the bottom of the ocean! They rebuilt it below the waves and we get an awesome full page splash of the city in all of its glory in this issue (Pics 2 in color and pic 3 pencils). Look at all that detail and amazing landscape!!! This series is loaded with amazing art, but this underwater page really puts the SPLASH in Splash Page🌊🌊🌊!!! #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #Eternals #TheEternals #Deviants #Celestials #TheSecondHost #Lemuria #KirbySplashPage #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #IGComics #ComicsOfIG https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx2fB_vBsS8/?igshid=14jtc8r9oeska

#JackedKirby - The Many Adventures of Thor!!! ⚡️⚡️⚡️ Jack had put Thor through many adventures in the pages of Journey Into Mystery and The Mighty Thor comic series, but none were more harrowing then the Ragnarok saga in issues 155-157. Thor battling the Magog for the fate of the Universe... it don’t get much better than that! But once the good guys won and pulled out a victory, it was time to take the character in a different direction... specifically Thor’s human alter ego, Dr. Donald Blake. ⚡️⚡️⚡️ In this issue (Thor #Issue158 published in November of 1968) Thor begins to question the idea of if he is really the God of Thunder and was trapped in Donald Blake’s body by Odin... or if he was Donald Blake first and merely possesses the power of Thor temporarily. This gave Jack and Stan a chance to retcon the characters origin a bit... and ultimately do away with the Donald Blake alter ego storyline all together, allowing Thor to be The Mighty Thor all day everyday!!! ⚡️⚡️⚡️ This splash page appears at the end of the issue when Thor is reminiscing about the many events that have taken place thus far in his life... major enemies he has battled and allies he has fought alongside are present in this beautiful splash. This page symbolizes the PAST that we had read... and began a new chapter in the characters story led by Jack and Stan!!! ⚡️⚡️⚡️ #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #Thor #TheMightyThor #KirbySplashPage #TheWarriorsThree #Hercules #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #60sComics #ComicsOfThe60s #IGComics #ComicsOfIG https://www.instagram.com/p/ByiLa0ahXxn/?igshid=1pi95o4ma4qyo

#JackedKirby - Thor The Asian Sensation!!!! ⚡️⚡️⚡️ I absolutely love finding foreign adaptions of pages and covers from classic comics.... the images don’t change much, but they take on a new life when the scripted bubbles are translated into different languages. ⚡️⚡️⚡️ When I was researching a Thor post the other day I came across this awesome opening Splash from #Issue158 (November of 1968). The dive bombing Thor (Pic 2) is splendidly done by Kirby to open this issue... but when you see it portrayed in the translated version (Pic 1) it has something different about it... it’s the same image, but the text changes the feel of the whole page! ⚡️⚡️⚡️ I’m not 100% sure if this is a Chinese or Japanese adaption... when I found the page it wasn’t listed as either. But maybe you guys out there in Insta-land can help me out... is this Chinese or Japanese? Or something else... Let us know in the comments below!!!! ⚡️⚡️⚡️ #JackKirby #Kirby #KingKirby #Thor #TheMightyThor #JapaneseComics #ChineseComics #ForeignComicAdaptations #KirbySplashPage #SplashPage #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #IGComics #ComicsOfIG https://www.instagram.com/p/ByptVs_hC0M/?igshid=ln0ua7vr5wyf

#JackedKirby - A brainwashed Ben is a dangerous THING!!! 💥💥💥 This has to be one of my all time FAVORITE opening splash pages during the legendary 102 issue run of Jack and Stan on the Fantastic Four... and I really love it because of the insight the original page provides us! The page comes from #Issue42 of the FF series, published in September of 1965. 💥💥💥 At the bottom of the original art page (pic 1) you can see a long list of “notes” from Jack to Stan in the margin. I couldn’t find a close enough zoomed in image to see the details, but this page (and many others confirm what Jack had claimed: That even though he was tasked with DRAWING the whole story BEFORE Stan dialogued one single word (The Marvel Method), he also provided story guidance and character direction in his art margins to assist Stan on dialoguing the story. This means he definitely had input on actual stories... and would dispute the long claimed idea that the artists merely drew the comics and didn’t come up with any of the storylines or arc directions at all! 💥💥💥 When you get past the controversial margin notes, you are left with a pretty FANTASTIC (hehehe... see what I did there!) opening splash (pic 2/3) that shows the Frightful Four surrounding their newest ALLY... a brainwashed Ben Grimm!!! This would allude to the awesome cover that shows The Thing and Mr Fantastic tangled in a heap... The Thing blames Reed for his hideous visage and faults him for being the rock monster we all love!!!! 💥💥💥 You can also see the original art was mostly a waste up shot of Ben and the Frightful Four... but when it was colored in the finished boom it seems it was pushed a bit further back depth wise and we can clearly see the legs of all five of the figures! I personally prefer the original inked layout... a close up of The Ever Lovin’ Blue Eyed Thing in all his magnificent rocky glory!!! 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #FF #FantasticFour #TheThing #TheFrightfulFour #OpeningSplashPage #KirbySplashPage #Brianwashed #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #MarginNotes #60sComics #ComicsOfThe60s #ComicsOfIG #IGcomicCommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/BxTGIsIh3bA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1b5jlvcbtlwkf

#JackedKirby - The Giant Galactic Eye... 👁👁👁 Check out this massive space-scape from Jack on one of his last full series, Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers! What an insanely beautiful cosmic picture from the King... hard to believe that THIS is what people criticize as “Kirby being in decline!!!” 👁👁👁 This awesome double splash page comes from Captain Victory #Issue7 from September of 1982. We see Captain Victory and his fleet stumble upon this massive face in outer space... the Giant Galactic Eye!!! 👁👁👁 If this is how the story starts artistically, you can only imagine the insane designs that Kirby would employ when bringing the Wonder Warriors into this issue (check back in the feed, we did a whole post on those fantastically designed characters sometime ago- Mike). Kirby has his cosmic greatness hitting on all angles with this insane alien head... and the beautifully Kirby-Tech adorning the bottom two panels (from inside Cap’s ship!) are throwbacks to Kirby’s FF days!!! I don’t know why people critique Kirby’s art at this point of his career... to me, it’s SPACE-TASTIC!!! 👁👁👁 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #CaptainVictory #CaptainVictoryAndTheGalacticRangers #TheGalacticRangers #PacificComics #80sComics #ComicsOfThe80s #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #CosmicKirby #KirbySplashPages #KirbySplashPage #SplashPage #DoubleSplashPage https://www.instagram.com/p/BvxSqm2AbUg/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1c6r0ljrjhc31

#JackedKirby - Mister Miracle, Escape Artist Extraordinaire!!! 💥💥💥 Looking back at Jack’s master stroke of the 4th World, Mister Miracle, it is hard to believe that these series got canceled so unceremoniously. They are just chock full of incredible visuals... and excellent stories to boot! 💥💥💥 Take this awesome opening splash from Mister Miracle #Issue12 from February of 1973. Scott Free is strapped to a torpedo, flying through the air over the ocean... his restraints on his neck, chest, arms and legs are just so over the top!!! How else would Jack have done it??? It has to be an IMPOSSIBLE situation... 💥💥💥 As the story continues with Page 2 of the book (pic 2/3) we get an insane visual of the torpedo submerging itself under water as it speeds towards its target... with Mister Miracle strapped on along for the ride towards doom!!! I love Kirby’s use of energy lines to illustrate the torpedo moving through the water as Scott busily tries to free himself from this horrible predicament!!! 💥💥💥 As Oberon and the soldier look on the torpedo meets its mark and explodes... and they begin to morn for the loss of a hero!!! But alas, Mister Miracle has gotten free and is floating in the waters below!!! They fish him out using a hook, and we get an awesome panel of Scott waving triumphantly as he has escaped death once again!!! (Bottom of pic 4, closeup in pic 5). 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #MisterMiracle #ScottFree #KirbySplashPage #EscapeArtist #NewGods #4thWorld #DCComics #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #IGComics #ComicsOfIG #ComicsOfInstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BuSQyk7BW61/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=elob04icvm6h

#JackedKirby - Avengers... Attack! 💥💥💥 The early issues of The Mighty Avengers are extremely important to Marvel continuity because they not only introduced a crazy amount of villains and heroes into the mix, they also showed character development and growth for the core members of the team. Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Giant Man And Wasp (and even Hulk early on) all begin to slide into shape as Lee/Kirby began to institute character behaviors and traits into the stories that would become tropes synonymous with these characters for decades. 💥💥💥 By #Issue6 (published in July of 1964) Kirby and Lee began challenging the team with greater foes and setting the stage for greater battles... which led to more awesome Kirby splash pages and multi panel battles to encompass all the action! In issue 6 they battle the Masters of Evil, a powerful villain conglomerate featuring the likes of Baron Zemo, The Melter, Paste Pot Pete, The Black Knight And even boasts a connection to Adolf Hitler HIMSELF!!! 💥💥💥 Pic 1 of this post depicts the team (minus the Hulk now who has left the team for GREENER pastures... hehehe) preparing themselves for battle by testing out Cap’s new radio controlled shield. It’s a great opening vertical splash that Kirby utilizes to highlight the other team members while making Cap and the Shield The central elements of the page. 💥💥💥 Pic 2 is a bottom of the page double square sized panel that highlights the team in battle side by side... and it’s just awesome! A beautiful team shot with Thor and Cap bookending Iron Man, Giant Man and Wasp as she is mid flight... one of the most classic panels of the full team in this spectacular early Kirby/Lee run on the book!!! 💥💥💥 This kind of epic and heroic art set the stage for the Avengers to become the cornerstone team title alongside Fantastic Four for years to come at Marvel... 💥💥💥 #KingKirby #Kirby #JackKirby #Avengers #TheAvengers #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #KirbySplashPage #KirbySplashPages #SplashPage #60sComics #ComicsOfThe60s #TheMightyAvengers #Thor #IronMan #CaptainAmerica #Wasp #GiantMan #IGComics #ComicsOfIG #igcomicfamily #igcomiccommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/BsYCpt7BgQm/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1m2d5vdj6w0a5

#JackedKirby - The People Breeders! 💥💥💥 While Kirby’s most celebrate contributions to the Marvel Universe may be Cap & The FF, to me Thor should be higher up on the importance list. His seminal run on Journey Into Mystery & The Mighty Thor is almost as long as the famous FF run, and he creat d an equal amount of supporting players for the Marvel Universe in that series too... 💥💥💥 #Issue134 was published in November of 1966 and follows Thor’s Big battle with Ego the Living Planet. Thor helps free the Rigellian’s from Ego’s control and begins to travel back towards earth with them... but they encounter Galactus! They also battle the High Evolutionary, The Man-Beast and Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver I’m leave from the Avengers!!! 💥💥💥 This opening splash shows Thor and one of Rigellians doing a Space walk prior to meeting up with Galactus... it is a classic “Thor holding Mjolinir” pose and since its set in outer space it lets Kirby flex his cosmic muscle a bit on the backdrop! I love his use of Kirby Krackle as the stars and sky of Space... and the purple/blue colors make the space local even more believable. I also love Colleta’s inks on Thor.... not many people care for his work, but I think this may be his best work while paired with Kirby. This beautiful splash is a match made it heaven as far as I’m concerned!!! 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #Thor #Asgard #TheMightyThor #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #KirbySplashPage #SplashPage #VinceColleta #KirbyAndColetta #60sComics #ComicsOfthe60s #igcomicfamily #igcomiccommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/BocnjdjnR2X/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1xj7u564s80ja

#JackedKirby - Bath Of Fire!!! 🔥🔥🔥 The Demon May have originated as a “contract fulfillment” series from Jack after the premature cancelation of his 4th World books by DC... but by the time it wrapped up in issue 16 it would be one of the most visually stunning and complex series Jack ever worked on! From issue 1 all the way through the end Jack barrages the reader with splash page and double page spread one after another, bringing the hideous monsters and creatures of the story to nightmarish life! It is a horror fanatics wet dream to say the least... 🔥🔥🔥 #Issue2 was published in October of 1972 and is a prime example of this. Jack starts the issue with not one... not two... but THREE full page splashes to get the ball rolling! That’s insane, something rarely ever seen in comics from anyone beside him. He has at least 5 other full page splashes in this issue alone... But the opening page to Chapter 3 is the splash we choose to focus on in this post! 🔥🔥🔥 Morgan Le Fey is conducting a magic seance in the woods with the hope of restoring her youth. She is wearing a creepy ass mask, and before she starts the ritual she removes the mask to reveal a decrepit & decaying centuries old face!!! The shift from the pristine mask to the wrinkled visage is so stark... but the real “Kirby-ism” of the page is his use of Kirby Krackle within the flames of the fire. Kirby works his magic with those little black dots and you can almost feel the heat coming off the page as if you were sitting right there in the forest alongside Le Fey and her minions! 🔥🔥🔥 This series is a visual treat for anyone who gives it a shot, and DC just recently collected it and re-released it in one paperback edition! Get on it!!! 🔥🔥🔥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #TheDemon #JasonBlood #MorganLeFey #Witchcraft #Horror #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #SplashPage #KirbySplashPage #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #igcomicfamily #igcomics #comicsofinstagram #comicbooksociety #dccomics #kirbykrackle

#JackedKirby - First I gotta fight a planet... now this guy? 💥💥💥 The Mighty Thor certainly had his work cut out for him over the later months of 1966 when it came to who he was battling... First he battled Ego the Living Planet and then he had to fight off the Devourer of Worlds himself... GALACTUS!!! 💥💥💥 This is #Issue134 of The Mighty Thor which was published in November of 1966. On his way home from the Black Galaxy and bringing peace of mind to the residents of Rigel, Thor crosses path with the deadly Galactus. 💥💥💥 What’s really crazy is this insane splash and feature of a key villain is a throw away plot point... it has nothing to do with the rest of this issue nor the coming issues! Thor and the Rigelians don’t battle Galactus here... as a matter of fact we get a completely different storyline and no mention of the character again in this issue!! 💥💥💥 A few years later Jack and Stan would bring back the Purple Planet Eater in the pages of Thor (issues 166-68) where they would fill in details about his backstory and other key points about the fan favorite. People were clamoring for more Galactus after FF issues 48-50... Maybe Jack included him here just to quell that hunger from the crowd and bide his time while he worked out his storyline? One thing is for certain... for a throw away page, that had no relation to the story, this is EPIC! A beautiful 3/4 profile of the majestic Galactus set against the backdrop of space... with some awesome Kirby tech for good measure!!! 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KirbyKrackle #Kirby #KingKirby #Galactus #Thor #TheMightyThor #KirbySplashPage ##SplashPage #Comic #Comics #Comicbook #ComicBooks #60sComics #comicsofthe60s #igcomiccommunity #igcomics #comicsofig #gueststar #cameo

#JackedKirby - Flashback To The T’Challa’s Trial by Combat!!! This awesome splash comes from Black Panther #Issue8 which was published in a March of 1978. This double page spread is the kind of thing I often point to when people say Jack “lost a step” in his later years in the comic industry. If he did I certainly don’t see it here!!! This page is at the front of the issue and transports is back to T’Challa’s original Trial By Combat to become the Black Panther. But there is a sneaky twist in the next two pages. Even though this was T’Challa’s final test before becoming the Black Panther... that isn’t him in the costume. It is actually the person who WAS the Black Panther when T’Challa challenges him... and that is T’Challa bare chested with that purple gimp mask on in the lower right corner of the page!!! After roughing up the current occupant of the suit, T’Challa removes his mask and is given the title of Black Panther, Protector of Wakanda by his fellow tribesman. The story then flashes forward to current time with Panther on a mission, explaining that he was “reminiscing” about the day he became the Panther. A great device to squeeze a flashback to his origin by Jack! #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #BlackPanther #TChalla #KirbySplashPage #SplashPage #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #TrialByCombat #BringOutTheGimp

#JackedKirby - The Secret of the Sorcerer’s Mirror... 💥💥💥 I am currently doing a quick dip through the Challengers of the Unknown series in late 1958 after they co-starred in Showcase. DC saw potential in the team, so they gave Jack the room to write/draw a Challengers series. 💥💥💥 I was taken by this opening splash page from #Issue3 of the series (September of 1958) that showcases a great page layout with an ominous sorcerer smack in the middle. He is featuring some awesome Kirby headgear... and that headgear pops up in a very interesting way later in the book. 💥💥💥 In pics 2/3 of this post, you can see the object of magical power from the issue... and that item is a mirror. The shape of the mirror is exactly in the shape of the Wizards headgear design from the issue open.... absolutely AWESOME foreshadowing and use of design. 💥💥💥 Kirby added this little subtle touch and it is absolutely awesome. I love finding things like this upon re-reading series at a later date. I never noticed it before, but stands out yo me immediately now! 💥💥💥 #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #ChallengersOfTheUnknknown #Challengers #SplashPage #Splash #KirbySplashPage #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #IGComics #ComicsOfIG #50sComics #ComicsOfThe50s #DCComics https://www.instagram.com/p/CAVibodBRiw/?igshid=bjg2iik6ve1m

#JackedKirby - Hero vs Hero! Most of the time we encounter comic book heroes they are battling against terrible villains for the good of mankind. But sometimes the line gets blurred... like it Fantastic Four #Issue73 which was published in April of 1968! In this issue the Fantastic 3 (minus Sue who left the team due to her pregnancy) are afraid that Daredevil is actually Dr Doom in disguise... and that he has brought along two Doom-Bots modeled after Spidey and Thor to battle them! Unfortunately DD, Thor and Spidey are the real McCoys... but since the FF doesn’t know they battle it out! DD vs Mr Fantastic, Thor vs Thing and Torch vs Spidey!!! In the end Sue returns to set the story straight... and everyone leaves friends. But this is just one of the ways Doom can mess with his enemies, so one can never be too sure!!! #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #FF #FantasticFour #Thor #Spiderman #Daredevil #DrDoom #60sComics #ComicsOfThe60s #KirbySplashPage #Comic #Comics #Comicbook #Comicbooks #igcomics #comicsofig

#JackedKirby - The Chair To Anywhere... There is no doubting the love I have for the 4th World series’s that Jack created at DC. They are full of tons of Kirby creativity that he let go all in one fell swoop. But I am constantly stunned by the amount of Full Page splashes he added throughout the issues. Even stuff that didn’t have an overwhelming bearing on the story... Jack still went all out and crated splashes for those as well. An excellent example of this comes in #Issue4 of the New God series, which was published in September of 1971. In the opening splash of this book we see Metron and a younger New God named Esak traveling through time and space to a planet of primitive cultures... cavemen and dinosaurs galore!!! This awesome splash shows them flying in the Mobius Chair being chased by two Tyrannosaurus Rex looking creatures... but the coolest part is this whole panel/page has NOTHING to do with the overall story of the issue at all! In this issue Orion uses an alternate identity to go undercover and infiltrate Inter Gang in The hope of discovering the whereabouts of the Deep Six... But Jack felt the incessant need to include this magnificent dinosaur splash with two additional characters unrelated to storyline just to do it. You gotta respect that... #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #4thWorld #NewGods #Metron #MobiusChair #NewGenesis #TRex #KirbyDinosaurs #Dinosaurs #Cavemen #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #IGComicCommunity #ComicsOfIG #KirbySplashPage #SplashPage

#JackedKirby - The Formation of the Eternal Uni-Mind!!! Jack Kirby’s Eternals series from the late 70s is some dense stuff... a complex mythology that is often dismissed as “Marvel’s New Gods but not as good” incorrectly by people who claim to know Jack’s work. While the New Gods was definitely Jack’s DC take on his Asgardian creations from his Marvel years, this Eternals series is something different entirely. Kirby not only shook the foundations of the Marvel Universe to the core, he once again outdid himself in terms of creating something far more complex than it first appears. The Eternals were beings created by the First Host of Celestials 1,000,000 years ago. These Space faring Celestials experimented on the Eternals and gave them their gifts of power, flight and immortality. Through the years they faced many challenges and the evolution of man on Earth, as well as the arrival of the 2nd and 3rd Hosts of Celestials showing up to “Judge” their creations and see how it was going. But the arrival of the 4th Host was different... Finding that the 4th Host planned on entering Earth into a 50 year Judgement plan, the leader of the Eternals Zuras summoned all the Eternals from around the globe. By having them all unite in one place they could conjure the Uni-Mind, a collective consciousness that might be powerful enough to thwart the Celestial threat. This splash page opens #Issue 11 from May of 1977... we see Zuras in the center tower observing the arrival of the Eternal contingent from around the globe! Such a beautiful image with insane detail and obsessive detailed creation for essentially throw away Eternals never actually named in the comics! Absolutely gorgeous... #JackKirby #KingKirby #Kirby #TheEternals #Underrated #Celestials #4thHost #Olympia #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #KirbySplash #KirbySplashPage #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #IgComicCommunity #ComicsOfIG

#JackedKirby - A Wizard and his Demon... 💥💥💥 Everyone who follows the page knows I am a HUGE fan of The Demon series... but the more I read it, the more I find more gems.... like this beauty opening splash page from #Issue5 of the series (January of 1973). 💥💥💥 We get this BEAUTIFUL shot of Etrigan, in strike pose ready to pounce, flanked by his master... The Wizard Merlin has never looked so cool!!! Look at the detail in his hooded cloak... it’s phenomenal! 💥💥💥 This series is loaded with amazing images and slash pages (so many splash pages!!!) but this has to be one of my faves...
