Burnie 2 Ch D SF: Kody Pearson/Blake Blaydon def. Alex Bolt/Luke Saville [2] 6-1, 6-4 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Throughout most of this match, the problematic net game cost A. Bolt/Luke the match. This happened due to the pacing K. Pearson/B. Bayldon imposed, passing the latter through the net numerous times, while sometimes lobbing their way to showcase their successful point construction. This helped them generating 7 break points, breaking thrice compared to A. Bolt/Luke, who were unable to break after the former went clutch in some occasions.
On the other hand, it turned out both pairs had their own service game strengths. In this case, the unseeded home pair won 21% more points from their first serves with a 82% winning percentage despite both pairs scoring one ace along the way. However, their second serves almost let them down despite double-faulting just once, falling 8% behind the second seeds, but it appeared that their first serves alone was sufficient to get them out of trouble at times.
In their maiden Challenger doubles final appearance as a pair, K. Pearson/B. Bayldon will face fourth seeds Benjamin Lock/Yuta Shimizu, who previously stunned first seeds Callum Puttergill/Blake Ellis 7-6(6), 6-2 in another competitive match, thus denying an all-Australian final possibility. Knowing both pairs, this could build an exciting final, with their balance being tested throughout the match. This better deliver in one way or another.

The San Diego Film Critics Society usually marches to a beat of its own and doesn’t necessarily fall in line with other groups during awards season. The 2021 San Diego Film Critics Society nominations are a mixed bag of both the usual suspects – Belfast, Dune, and The Power of the Dog – and films that weren’t mentioned quite as often on other lists – Mass, CODA, and In the Heights.
If my math’s correct, the group (of which I’m a current member and past president) spread our nominations out to include 46 different films, with Belfast topping the list with 12 nominations. Dune picked up nine, The Power of the Dog scored eight, and Nightmare Alley and Mass tied with seven nominations each. CODA was nominated in six categories and In the Heights earned five nominations.

Sam Thaiday considering NRL options as Brisbane Broncos tell him he's not staying | Sam Thaiday
Broncos forward Sam Thaiday says he could consider playing for another club, amid revelations he will not be offered a new contract in Brisbane. They went on to win 10 State of Origin series and that's a pretty impressive thing. Triple M's Wendell Sailor has had his say about the QLD re-shuffle, saying that the side should move away from having a utility on the bench and instead bring back a stalwart of the game. BRONCOS enforcer Sam Thaiday is in some doubt for Friday's NRL clash against ladder-leaders Melbourne, after training separately to the main group on Tuesday.

While A. Bolt/Luke tried to step up in the second set, it was insufficient for them to turn things around due to their net games letting them down once again. In this regard, K. Pearson/B. Bayldon showed their excellent point construction through a working one-handed backhand lob to secure their first service game hold of the set (1-1). It took three consecutive holds later before they created another break point thanks to a volley lob, but A. Bolt/Luke managed to hold their service games to 3-3.
It was not until the subsequent service game where K. Pearson/B. Bayldon managed to capitalize on A. Bolt/Luke subpar net game with their return anticipation, with their backhand return ace securing their break point before their cross-court forehand pass to the second seeds' failed volley response converted the said break point to 4-3. Even though A. Bolt/Luke executed a more successful volley after a net exchange by going after the unseeded pair's volleys, it was insufficient as the latter held their serves to 5-3.
K. Pearson/B. Bayldon almost broke for the match after their forehand finish passed A. Bolt/Luke at the net again for their one-point lead at the start of the game, but the latter's successful serve+1 made the former serve for the match in the ninth game. Eventually, they pulled through by holding to 0, taking the second set 6-4 to secure their first Challenger-level final as a pair.

A rematch of last week's Burnie 1 Challenger semifinal happened to close today's play between Kody Pearson/Blake Bayldon, who notably won an ITF title as a pair, as well as reaching the Sydney Challenger semifinals last year, and second seeds Alex Bolt/Luke Saville. While the latter won last week's encounter more straightforwardly 6-4, 6-2, this match came down to their net games for a pair to stand out by the end of the match.
Initially, after an unforced error, K. Pearson/B. Bayldon survived a break point before their volley right at the deciding point allowed them to hold their service games 1-0. It turned out to be a crucial hold once they went after A. Bolt/Luke's volleys, where the latter's failed smash also contributed to K. Pearson/B. Bayldon's break of serve to 2-0. They then swiftly consolidated the lead to 3-0 and had not looked back since.
In the sixth game, K. Pearson/B. Bayldon continued to show their net game prowess. Here, A. Bolt's failed backhand volley resulted in the unseeded home pair's break point conversion (5-1), allowing them to serve for the first set breadstick. However, even though K. Pearson/B. Bayldon faced a stiff opposition thanks to A. Bolt's around-the-post backhand winner for their break point, the former pair still came in a clutch after A. Bolt's forehand volley fail converted their set point on deciding point, thus K. Pearson/B. Bayldon successfully served the first set breadstick (6-1) to the second seeds.

Ibague Ch D F: Finn Reynolds/Matias Soto [2] def. Leonardo Aboian/Valerio Aboian 6-4, 4-6, [10-7] Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
There was a tiny difference between both pairs as this turned out to be a competitive match, but it all came down to how timely they could in executing their shots, where this occurred mostly as they moved forward to the net. This made the difference even if both pairs secured 100% break point conversion rate, with F. Reynolds/M. Soto having 2 break points that denoted them being proactive in most parts of the match. To add, their opportune responses also caught the Argentinean brothers off-guard during the match tie-break, which affected their third shots on return that made it more error-prone.
On the other hand, the second seeds also appeared more solid on their serves. Even though the Aboian brothers scored twice more aces than the former (4 to 2), F. Reynolds/M. Soto managed to win 72% of their first serve points to get themselves out of most troubles. Somehow, the Argentinean pair double-faulted thrice compared to the second seeds' twice, which faded their second serve percentage 9% below the second seeds as a result of being passed as they tried to respond to the latter's post-serve returns, which became more evident during the tie-breaker.
This title marked F. Reynolds/M. Soto's first Challenger title as a pair, with F. Reynolds winning his maiden Challenger title of his career, while M. Soto won his third Challenger title (including last year's Santa Fe and Temuco Challengers). For F. Reynolds, his next tournament will be the Bloomfield Hills Challenger, where he and Kody Pearson will face wild cards Ozan Baris/Nishesh Basavareddy in the first round, while M. Soto appears as the 27th qualifying alternate in Newport (250) instead. The only way is up from now on for them!

Sydney Ch D SF: Ryan Seggerman/Patrik Trhac def. Matthew Christopher Romios/Dane Sweeny 6-2, 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
What a statement from R. Seggerman/P. Trhac, who came down under with a bang. They were aggressive from their forehand side, mostly well-executed and well-anticipated until it caught Romios/D. Sweeny mostly off-guard, often marked by their unforced errors to create their 7 break points, breaking four times along the way. Their only break point came after D. Sweeny's lob to save a match point, but it was insufficient due to R. Seggerman/P. Trhac's solid serving.
Furthermore, R. Seggerman/P. Trhac also had a solid service game. Serving 5 more aces than Romios/D. Sweeny, R. Seggerman/P. Trhac was dominant through their first serves with a 90% winning percentage. In contrast, Romios/D. Sweeny's second serves turned out to be vulnerable, with only 27% winning percentage faded by their 3 double faults, 28% lesser than R. Seggerman/P. Trhac's 55% rate, considering how often they got rushed during their follow-ups as a result of this vulnerability's exposure.
In tomorrow's finals, R. Seggerman/P. Trhac will face the winner between Blake Bayldon/Kody Pearson and third seeds Jisung Nam/Ruben Gonzales, whose match have yet to commence due to Jisung Nam's singles match still ongoing by the conclusion of this match. This could be interesting to see how R. Seggerman/P. Trhac's aggression fares within two consecutive weeks, with a possibility of this being a closer encounter than today's semifinals. Could be an exciting match as well!
