R.I.P Prince Markie Dee

Prince Markie Dee of The Fat Boys has died today at age 52. His manager Louie "Uncle Louis" Gregory made the announcement on Twitter. Mark Anthony Morales was one-third of the Disco 3 in the early '80s. The Brooklyn natives won a talent show hosted by Mr. Magic at Radio City Hall in 1983 and released their first single "Reality" later that year. James Mason, who was Roy Ayers' keyboard and guitar player, produced the song. An introduction to Kurtis Blow was pivotal towards their upcoming success because he helped them to find their sound with producers Larry Smith and Davy "DMX" Reeves. Their name was changed to The Fat Boys because of their growing waistlines. In 1984 their self-titled debut album came out and made history as the first to feature beatboxing from member Buffy who was known as The Human Beatbox. Morales, who also had the nickname The Puerto Rican Prince, was the first rapper of Latin heritage to go platinum long before Big Pun did as a solo artist.
The Fat Boys had seven albums of which three went Gold and one went Platinum. "Fat Boys/Human Beat Box," "Jailhouse Rap" and "Wipeout" were some of the biggest rap songs of the time. They were part of a cannon that included Run DMC, Whodini and UTFO before rap groups became extinct. They famously had roles in the films Krush Groove, Knights Of The City and Disorderlies. Their humor and skills combined made them likeable and accessible to everyone including those who were not hardcore hip-hop fans.
When rap tastes changed and the group disbanded Prince Markie Dee signed a solo deal with Columbia Records in 1991. He had a hit with the song "Typical Reasons (Swing My Way)." Around this time he formed a production company with Cory Rooney and they wrote and produced "Real Love" for Mary J. Blige. They also worked with Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Craig Mack, Christopher Williams, and Marc Anthony. In the 2000s, he worked as a radio host for two different Florida FM stations. The Prince Markie Dee Show on Sirius XM's Rock The Bells was his latest radio endeavor. He was recently portrayed by actor Carlos Albornoz in the Lifetime Salt-N-Pepa biopic because of his engagement to Pepa in the '90s.
Kool-Rock Ski is the only surviving member of The Fat Boys. Buffy died in 1995 from a heart attack at the age of 28. Dee would have turned 53 on February 19th one day after his passing.

30 Day Song Callenge
Day 12: “A song from your preteen years”
youtube
I was 12 years old - the height of what is now called being a “tween” - when Sheila Cecilia Escovedo - popularly known as Sheila E - released her now-classic hit single “The Glamourous Life” on May 2nd, 1984. 🤭
This single was off her debut album, also titled "The Glamorous Life". The single quickly peaked at number 7 the Hot 100 and also topped the Dance charts for two weeks in August 1984. The video for the song went on to earn three MTV Award nominations (Best Female Video, Best New Artist, and Best Choreography). Sheila E also received two Grammy Award nominations that year as a result of “The Glamourous Life” (Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Performance Female).
A year later in 1985, Sheila went on to release what many people refer to as her “signature song”, “A Love Bizarre”, but honestly, “The Glamourous alife” will always be by favourite Sheila E jam because it takes me instantly back to the naive bliss of my pre-teen days.
Sheila was one of the Prince’s favourite (and best known) protégés, often playing percussion for him Live, even becoming his offficial drummer when he broke up The Revolution in 1986. She played percussion and live drums on many of the songs from Prince’s “Sign O’ The Times” album and went on to hold down the drums in the live band when Prince embarked on the legendary Sign O’ The Times concert tour and subsequent concert film.
In the years following, she returned many times to play with him Live on the road, even becoming his Musical Director at one point.
Do I even need to point out that Prince is responsible for writing (or in some cases co-writing) and producing all of Sheila E’s best known hits?
“The Glamourous Life” - written by Prince and produced by Prince & Sheila E.
“The Belle Of St. Mark” - written by Prince and produced by Sheile E and Prince (under his psuedonym The Starr ⭐️ Company).
“A Love Bizarre” - written and produced by Prince & Sheila E [also featuring Prince on co-lead vocal]). (Best known for being featured in the iconic Hip Hop film Krush Groove which starred now-legendary rappers Run-DMC, Kurtis Blow, The Fat Boys and LL Cool J 😉)
“Holly Rock” - written and produced by Prince but performed by Sheila E. (Also featured prominently in the film Krush Groove but notably absent from the oroginal release of the movie’s soundtrack album. It later became a hit single and was added to subsequent re-releases of the soundtrck album)
For those who may assume that Sheila’s only link to fame and music greatness was her close relationship with The Purple One, think again!
Sheila comes from a renowned musical family. Her father - Pete Escovedo is a veteran percussionist who played with Santana and many others. And her godfather is Latin Music legend Tito Puente (best known for the classic hit “Oye Como Va”).
Sheila herself was already an accomplished percussionist when she first met Prince, having worked with jazz artists Herbie Hancock and George Duke (and later with soul stars Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and Lionel Richie).
The legend goes that Prince met Sheila E backstage at at a concert in 1978, when she was performing with her father.
After the show he met her and joked that he and his bassist Andre Cymone "were just fighting about which one of us would be the first to be your husband."
He also vowed that one day she would join his band. The two eventually joined forces during the recording sessions for his Purple Rain album, for which she provided vocals on "Erotic City" (the B-side to the single “Let's Go Crazy”, in 1984).
Speaking of which, here’s a clip of Sheila E giving the story behind the recording of “Erotic City”. 😉👇🏾
youtube
And here’s Sheila doing an amazing live performance of “The Glamorous Life” at the 1985 American Music Awards. (That glow-in-the-dark timbale solo at 3:34 is nothing short of mindblowing, IMHO.)
youtube
And finally, here’s Sheila doing a kickass live rendition of “The Glamorous Life” at a Prince concert in Oakland, California circa 2011. (And yes there’s another great percusion solo lol. Would it really be Sheila E without one? 🙌🏾)
youtube
In closing, I’d just like to say that they don’t call this lady “The Queen Of Percussion” for nothing. Long live Sheila E! Enjoy living “The Glamourous Life”, ma’am! 🙏🏾
Here’s one last amazing Sheila E percussion solo performance for the road. Thank you for for coming to my Ted Talk! 👇🏾👇🏾

It’s a rare singer-songwriter who can just give away undeniable hits like “Nothing Compares 2 U,” “Manic Monday” and “The Glamorous Life” to other artists, but that’s exactly what Prince did throughout his 40-year career.
And on his birthday, June 7, the late artist’s estate, in partnership with Warner Bros. Records and Tidal, will release “Originals,” a 15-track album featuring 14 previously unreleased recordings by Prince of such songs. The tracks were selected collaboratively by Troy Carter, on behalf of The Prince Estate, and Jay-Z.
Starting June 7, “Originals” will stream exclusively on Tidal for 14 days. The announcement notes, “In the spirit of sharing Prince’s music with his fans as he wanted, the album will be available to stream in Master quality via Tidal’s HiFi subscription tier. Members will be able to hear the recordings just as the Artist intended the tracks to sound.” On June 21, Warner Bros. will release the recordings, sourced directly from Prince’s archive of “Vault” recordings, via all download and streaming partners and physically on CD, while 180 gram 2LP and limited edition Deluxe CD+2LP formats will follow on July 19th. (Pre-order the album here.)Prince was a monumentally prolific artist and by the mid-1980s, in addition to releasing nine of his most commercially successful albums, he also wrote and recorded many dozens of songs for proteges The Time, Vanity 6, Sheila E., Apollonia 6, Jill Jones, the Family, and Mazarati. Often, Prince’s original demo recordings would be used as master takes on their albums, with only minor alterations to the instrumentation and a replacement of the vocal tracks. Other times, artists would rely on his demos to guide them through their own recording process, with Prince’s initial take informing their final version of his song.“Originals” reveals the origins of these songs — many of which were substantial hits — along with deeper album cuts such as Vanity 6’s “Make-Up,” Jill Jones’s “Baby, You’re a Trip,” and Kenny Rogers’ “You’re My Love.” The only previously released song is Prince’s original 1984 version of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was released in 2018 as a standalone single (and as a stellar live duet with Rosie Gaines in 1993). The song was originally released in 1985 by The Family, and made into an unforgettable No. 1 single by Sinead O’Connor five years later.

A-T-3 241 Kurtis Blow
Kurtis Blow was a superstar of rap, perhaps its first superstar, it's odd I've not seen him mentioned so much in the hip hop 50 celebrations. In a genre obsessed with recognition and success Blow broke at least two major landmarks, he was the first rapper to sign with a a major and 1980’s The Breaks sold half a million copies, becoming the first gold rap single
Released in 1980 Kurtis Blow's self titled debut album was the first record with the RUSH logo on it (RUSH Productions). Russell Simmons (another alleged wrong un being skipped over in the hip hop 50 celebrations) and Kurtis Blow had become friends at college, they were in a crew together, the Force, Simmons was a dancer in the crew but also stepped up when it came to getting gigs and promoting, Simmons became Kurtis Blow's manager. Simmons younger brother Run (of Run DMC) would become Kurtis Blow's protégé, Run had been his DJ and he taught Run to rap, before the reverend Joseph Simmons became Run he was known as the "Son of Kurtis Blow." Run met his wife, Justine Simmons, after a performance with Kurtis Blow
I knew Coldcut's debut single Say Kids way before Kurtis Blow's 1983 track Party Time. The cut up record uses Party Time to hold the track together. The vocal sample "Hey Ladies!" used by the Beastie Boys also come from Party Time, I knew the Beastie track before Party Time too. The track is a jam, mixing rap and Washington's go-go sound, Full Force sing backing vocals as well as synth and guitar, it's arranged and mixed by Elai Tubo who had remixed Action by Orange Krush the track whose drums became the basis for Sucker M.C.'s (Krush-Groove 1). Timothy Glover plays Rototoms, he also plays those marvellous toms on Grace Jones' Slave To The Rhythm
Another milestone, in 1983 Kurtis Blow is performing in front of thousands at the Tokyo Dome in Japan. From 1983 Blow steps up as a producer initially for Gigolette/Sweet G, Fearless Four, and Fever resident "Love Bug" Starski (see below)
In 1984 Kurtis Blow will release his most critically acclaimed album Ego Trip and in 1985 he stars in the movie Krush Groove
I'm listening to Jayquan's deep dive into Kurtis Blow now, should have listened to this first https://youtu.be/bZ32DLZ3muY
Kurtis Blow - Party Time
youtube
Gigolette - Games Females Play there's also a new wavey male vocal version called Games People Play by Sweet G that riffs heavier on Ike's Mood and is remixed by Jellybean

"Love Bug" Starski - Starski Live at the Disco Fever (Vocal) I may have shared this already but it's worth another listen

The Last Dragon
Director Michael Schultz Stars Taimak, Vanity, Leo O’Brien USA 1985 Language English 1hr 47mins Colour
Hang on, Motown made a 1980s kung-fu flick?
That’s right: as the credits announce, this is ‘Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon’. The man who had reigned over Hitsville USA had decided the way to stay relevant in the 1980s was with a movie that transplanted a bunch of martial arts cliches to New York City and blended them with a music biz storyline, complete with a guest appearance from Motown’s bright young hopes DeBarge. Directed by the guy who had just made Krush Groove and starring a complete unknown alongside Prince’s ex Vanity. And while grumpy critics might watch this film and see an inept mess with lousy fight scenes and worse music, it made a bunch of money at the time and – judging by its respectable 6.9 user score on IMDB – has a lot of stubborn fans to this day.
It goes something like this: 1) Leroy Green (Taimak) is told by his martial-arts instructor that there’s nothing more he can teach him, and the young man will have seek another master to take him to the next level. So Leroy wanders around Chinatown in search of his new guide. Leroy is the kind of innocent you sometimes get in kung-fu movies – maybe one who has been raised in a Buddhist monastery. Leroy indeed walks around NYC dressed as a (apparently fairly wealthy) Chinese peasant – but since he’s Harlem-born and bred, I spent a lot of time wondering how he had survived high school. Maybe that’s why he became so good at kung-fu?
2) Local bad guy Sho’nuff (Julius Carry) – who dresses in the post-apocalyptic manner of a member of the Soul Sonic Force – is determined to get Leroy to fight him. But Leroy, being pure of heart, will only fight to protect others. Sho, naturally, is not to going to give up…
3) Gangster Eddie Arkadian (Chris Murney) wants to get his talentless girlfriend’s pop video played on a TV show hosted by singer Laura Charles (Vanity), and is quite happy to use kidnapping and torture to make that happen. 4) Laura’s biggest fan, who genuinely seems to believe he has a shot with her even though he is only 14, is Leroy’s brother Richie (Leo O’Brien). Richie believes that he is as worldy as his brother is clueless.
I was going to say you can guess where this is going, but guessing suggests your mind would be working much harder than it needs. You’ll know what’s going to happen next. Which doesn’t have to be a problem. And the lack of acting experience in the main cast also didn’t necessary need to be a problem – if the fight scenes had been great. But they are not, they just look clumsy, which is probably more to do with the way they were filmed than the quality of the fighters. And that’s made much worse because we get two long scenes in which the characters (and us) are watching the Bruce Lee classics Enter The Dragon and Fists Of Fury. Which seems to invite the audience to go, ‘Oh, that’s how this should be done.’
Taimak had never acted before, which is fairly obvious. Vanity is fine, given a barely written part. Leo O’Brien* is basically doing an approximation of Gary Coleman’s schtick. On top of which, his dialogue is packed with racial slurs aimed at his brother – ‘chocolate-covered yellow peril’ just being one. Charming. At least Curry as Sho’nuff is giving it full ham. And William H Macy pops up in one scene and is very much himself, so that’s fun.
A lot of the time this feels like a kids movie – Arkadian’s lair is like something off of LazyTown – but there is some swearing and characters smoking weed, as well as some nasty weapons used by Leroy, which doesn’t make sense with his character at all. But I guess that would please the nine-year-olds this movie seems to have been aimed at – and who presumably grew up to be the people who love it still.
*RIP Vanity, O’Brien and Curry – that’s a big chunk of the cast who died too young.
This is part of my ‘Every girl should be given an electric guitar on her 16th birthday’ series of reviews about early/mid 1980s movies

NWA TNA Episode 6 - Welcome to the TNA Asylum

this ends badly for Sabu
NWA TNA Episode 6 From the TNA Asylum in Nashville, TN
We open with Jeff Jarrett beating a path to get his rightful world title shot. Shamrock beats and locks all of security in the back for some reason? And puts his friend in front of the door to guard it as he charges the ring. An NWA suit tells Jarrett that he's suspended for 60 days, which I'm sure he's going to take peacefully. Jarrett murders the VP with a chair until Ken Shamrock makes the ring to beat up Jarrett in sandals. There's no security, so Monty Brown and Apolo try to calm Shamrock, who takes a JJ chair shot anyways, then K-Krush and Brian Lawler calm down Jarrett and pull him back.
The announcers put over the "wild west" tonight with no security and go over the card and title matches for tonight.
The Amazing Red vs Low-Ki
Crowd goes fairly wild for Low-Ki. He spends the next few minutes beating the heck out of a very game Red. After a brief comeback, Low Ki kicks him so hard his head covering goes flying off, making Don West briefly worry that he kicked his entire head off. TAR hits a quick Code Red counter for only two. Low-Ki then survives a big tornado DDT. They have a great exchange of strikes and dodges, but Red misses the Infra-Red moonsault after putting Low-Ki down. Ki-Krusher 99 wins it after 8 minutes.
*** Low-Ki and Red both looked great here, with the winner still looking strong after his title match loss last week. Red also had a great debut.
Jarrett is in the back confronting Shamrock's British bodybuilder friend in front of the locked door.
Hot Shots vs Chris Harris & James Storm
The two local teams get a crazy pop. The Hot Shots cut a gross promo about protuding. The latter team has a backstage interview where Chris Harris begs him to drop the bullshit cowboy gimmick. He lights a cigarette to prove that he's a bad ass. The Hot Shots start off working the beatdown on poor Cowboy James Storm with some cool moves. The comeback starts when Storm botches rolling out of the way of a moonsault, but the Chris Harris hot tag goes down anyways. Everything breaks down into a brawl and Harris wins it with a Northern Lights Suplex.
**1/4 Standard tag match that barely flirted with being good .
Hot Shots get their beatdown in after the match, including some shots with the cap guns that Harris begged him to leave behind. Ken Shamrock gets some medical attention backstage before we go to the next match.
Apolo vs Brian Lawler
Jerry's Kid chants greet Lawler. The announcers put over Apolo's undefeated record and set him up as a future NWA Title challenger.T hey go back and forth with some awkward exchanges, Apolo eventually bloodies Brian's lip, and then he moonwalks back into a rollup for 3. That screams future World Champ to me.
*1/4 It's a good thing Apolo won, but the whole thing felt awkward and never got out of first gear in 10 minutes. Brian Lawler is really, really boring in the ring. Brian chokes out Don West after the match.
K-Krush is out to bury his old name, cutting a promo about not abiding by everyone's names, rules, or anything any longer. It's all about The Truth going forward. He name drops maligned black athletes like Tyson (yikes) until he gets to OJ Simpson (double yikes) and The Alpha Male Monty Brown interrupts him. They trade words until Truth calls him an Uncle Tom and starts the violence. Monty wins the exchange and hits a big Alpha Bomb. I think he's currently using the New Church's theme music for some reason.
There's a long video package of the history of AJ Styles and Jerry Lynn leading to a sitdown interview with Tenay on the bleachers. They're defending the titles against the Flying Elvises, and they seem to be, grudgingly, on the same page. AJ sucks up and Jerry somewhat apologizes since he was like AJ ten years ago in his career.
NWA Tag Team Title Match The Flying Elvis' vs AJ Styles and Jerry Lynn [c]
Jerry Yang is back. Siaki does the fake fist bump spot that I do love so much. The champs finally have dropped the embarrassing Born in the USA knockoff theme. Siaki joins commentary while Estrada/Yang start in the ring. 913 They go for a few minutes trading great X Division style moves back and forth, making both teams look good. AJ and Jerry hit some double team moves and quick tags to take control for a bit. Yang eventually knees a flying AJ Styles and spills the action outside where Siaki punches AJ out. Yang and Estrada take control of AJ for a while. It's an agonizingly long segment of AJ getting beaten until an enziguri bloodies Yang's nose and Lynn finally is tagged in to run wild. In a great spot, Lynn dives onto Yang, then Estrada on to them, and then AJ Styles lines up both Elvises until Siaki comes flying to knock them out of the way. AJ Styles slams into Jerry Lynn then, busting him hideously wide open. The Elvis' double team AJ and keep the bloodied Jerry down at ringside. Jerry fights his way back into the ring while AJ sets Yang up for the Spiral Tap. The veteran gets a quick roll up before AJ can hit his flashy top rope move, ending a 13 minute match.
***1/4 This was very good, telling a great story with the champs struggling to work together. It also worked for getting the Elvises over, with Siaki adding clever little cheating moves to almost push the Elvis' over the top.
Disco Inferno hosts "Jive Talkin'". He is putting over his long and storied wrestling career while sitting on a couch that wouldn't get $50 at Goodwill. He asks why he's in a hick town like Nashville, Tennessee. Cheap heat at its finest. He puts over the debut of his talk show next week. I thought… that was it? You know what, never mind. Let's go back to the girls dancing in cages.
Simon Diamond & Johnny Swinger vs Alpha Male Monty Brown & Primetime Elix Skipper
The card order is a little weird with this going after the title match. 938 943 The latter thrown together team works surprisingly well together, with Monty's strength and Elix's speed showing off. The experienced team from ECW takes control soon for a while until Elix is able to slam them into each other and make the hot tag to Monty Brown. Everything breaks down in the ring until Diamond & Swinger hit their finisher on Elix, only for them to realize he's not the legal man. They start to double team Monty Brown then until Elix trips up one of them in the ropes. The other gets caught by Monty with the Alpha Bomb and gets pinned after a fun 5 minute sprint.
** Solid little match. Diamond and Swinger still looked good in a losing effort.
Elix does a big celebration with Monty that ends up as a set up for The Truth to attack and give Monty one of his trademark belt chokings. Elix casually leaves the ring, setting his partner up and shrugging as he goes to the back.
The less said about the Dupps' promo in the back with Goldylocks, the better. The Dupps eventually pick a fight with Shamrock's MMA buddy Harrison and head to the ring with 2x4's.
Bo Dupp vs Ian Harrison
Jeremy Borash announces him as Some Big Muscle Headed Guy In The Back on Bo Dupp's advice. The announcers put him over as a Mr. Universe winner and he moves like he's half-paralyzed. He slowly beats Bo Dupp around the ring as the fans chant USA. After 3 minutes, a DQ run in by the other Dupp mercifully ends it.
1/4* This sucked. It only gets out of worthless status for some of Bo Dupp's bumping for this monument to steroids. Harrison no sells The Dupp's 2x4 shots as the segment wraps up.
Jarrett breaks through to security and Shamrock while the bodyguard is distracted in the ring, and everyone punches, pushes, and yells until we finally cut away for main event time.
NWA World Heavyweight Title Match Ladder vs Submission Ken Shamrock [c] vs Sabu
They have not really explained the rules of this one, but we're rolling anyways. The title doesn't appear to be hanging over the ring. Shamrock comes out and takes control with some strikes right after the bell rings. They finally get a camera shot of the belt hanging above the ring. There are rope breaks because of the submission stipulation. The World's Most Dangerous Man runs through a few different holds on Sabu as the match plods along in the ring. The crowd's turning on this match a bit as the announcers put over the security leaving and Ricky The Dragon Steamboat coming to restore order next week. Sabu hits some high flying moves and an armbar to show a little life in the ring. They finally get to the outside and Shamrock baseball slides to kick a ladder into Sabu's face. They brawl to the entranceway and back, bloodying Sabu. A table finally gets brought into play, and Sabu hits a double jump flipping splash through it on the entranceway, all alone after Ken Shamrock rolls out of the way. The champ goes for the title as Sabu lays in a bloody mess, with it flowing from his back as well. With his hands on the belt, the lights go out and Malice joins the ring to chokeslam Shamrock to the apron and steal the belt. Malice wins?
*1/2 We end with Malice posing with the belt at the entryway. Despite some effort from Sabu, that never really got into a groove. Ken Shamrock is really not looking good in his opening run as champ. He's been forced into some weird matches and opponents, but I'm still extremely ready for his reign to end, legitimately or not.
There's a lot of dead weight, but the show is doing a decent job pushing 4-6 storylines across their three title divisions, women's matchups, midgets and comedy, and even a few celebrities. I'm hoping for the heavyweight title scene to get some better wrestling and match quality soon, and god bless him, I'm anticipating Jeff Jarrett's consistent decent match output.
