How to recolour this wooden bench

I'm new to anything DIY, I've helped put together some Ikea furniture and that's about the extent of my skills.

I want to repaint an old yellow bench, after watching some videos I know I have to wash with sugar soap (TSP), sand paper it a little, prime the wood for paint adhesion, paint (and repaint and repaint) and then give it a top coat.

I'm wondering two things: 1. Can I use the same product for base and top coat and 2. can I use any colour on top of this yellow or will some colours show the yellow underneath? I'm not sure what colour to go with. I was considering trying a nicer yellow on top.
