7/27/23: It was 50 years ago today, July 27th, 1973, the New York Dolls would release their eponymous first album. There's not a whole lot I can say about the importance of this record that's already been said hundreds of times. So can we just enjoy it as a trashy, wonderful Rock 'n' Roll record? Like in the spirit of Little Richard when he wasn't being religious? 'Personality Crisis' opens the floodgates and it is just the rawest R&R you've ever heard... David Johansen (a.k.a. Buster Poindexter for all you '80s SNL lovers) does probably the best Mick Jagger impression, but then takes it up a thousand notches. And then Johnny Thunders on guitar... it's all smashing, I tell ya. Song two is just about as good, but almost a bit more sinister 'Looking For a Kiss'... Johansen says flatly at the beginning "When I say I'm in love you best believe I'm in love L.U.V."... and then it's like Alice Cooper takes over... I mean they got some mean melodies. Like I'm serious if the Rolling Stones went 'Punk' (and no not like Some Girls... not at allll) this is what I'd imagine them be like... even the slower songs have this kind of... I dunno... 'looseness' about them, like their going to fall apart at any minute, but they don't (stole that from a YT comment)... take the saxophone-heavy 'Lonely Planet Boy'... I mean this could be on Exile, and I'm not at all kidding. It's beautiful. Gotta like 'Trash'... 'gonn' pick it up!'... it's just fun to sing... in your face, this is totally THEE Proto-Punk record... like the direct line to the Ramones, which would make sense being all NYC and all. Like 'Subway Train' too... and 'Jet Boy', wow that one's a stomper... perfect ending tune. Great, just great tunes on this record. Ahead of their time... legends. Go listen to this goddam record right now, will ya?!

100 Favorite Idol Songs of 2019

One of the most exciting developments of the idol scene this decade has been the evolution of what an idol song can sound like. Many groups have brought their own idol-pop take on metal, punk, rap, trance, emo, math rock, jazz, shoegaze — or multiple of these genres at once. Dance-pop idols expanded their list of influences too, borrowing from retro styles like city pop and disco but also current trends like future-bass. All the while, the twinkling synths and strings of more traditional groups have yet to wane in popularity.

That genre dive, however, has also become the norm. A strategy of juxtaposition no longer feels impressive with so many combinations of personality and sound that have already been done. An interesting sound won’t necessarily guarantee a long run of success either. A group still needs the tried-and-true idol-group foundations of a drawing narrative and a line-up of likeable members.

That’s if they want to stick around for long. Many acts will continue to be a flash in the pan, and that’s fine: I still think idol groups aren’t designed to last a decade, or even half of that time, and it takes a lot of resources, perseverance and luck to go on for even half of that time. But this decade, we’ve also seen the lifespan of an act grow a little longer. It has not necessarily become easier to navigate — in fact, it might be even harder now with so many around — but the scene has proven to be more established with more potential markets if you can get a little creative.

Adapting to change and tracking that growth has been a key element to idols this decade. Following the evolution of the group’s music has been exciting, but also witnessing individual idols find their own identity in real time has been the most rewarding. This won’t change going into the next decade, and perhaps more crucial, especially as it becomes harder to introduce a sense of novelty: it’s going to be more important to convince others to follow the ride than try to be the next big thing right away.

I wonder what next thing will sound or look like in the coming years as we go forward to a new decade. Will idols need to be a jack of all trades, a master of a different style from single to single? Will they include a multimedia facet to their work, so a song also feels like a video and a live show all at once? Or will their stubbornness to buy into this everything-at-once vision bring a new lane where strictly following a single style has been the right choice all along? It can go any way, and some groups in this list hint at each possibility.

“David Johansen's self-titled solo debut bears a closer resemblance to his work with the New York Dolls than any of his subsequent recordings, but the former Dolls singer cleverly crafted an album that played to his former band's strengths while establishing an identity of his own and delivering a set of tight but powerful hard rock. ... Johansen's songs are more straightforward and less campy than his Dolls tunes; while ‘Funky But Chic’ would have done his old glam buddies proud (’Mama says I look fruity, but in jeans I feel rotten’), the celebration of the fair sex in ‘Girls’ and ‘I'm a Lover’ cuts his former sexual ambiguity to the quick, and the tough rock & roll good times of ‘Cool Metro’ and the girl-trouble commiseration of ‘Pain In My Heart’ show Johansen could move into more conventional lyrical territory without losing his swagger or street smarts along the way. And while the Dolls didn't leave Johansen much room for slow songs where he could wear his heart on his sleeve, ‘Donna’ and ‘Frenchette’ allow him to do just that, and remarkably well. ...”
