Kaladin in his rarest form: smiling! Nothing too fancy, just wanted to draw him in a less serious light for once. A few weeks ago @lamaery suggested a lighthearted interaction between Kal and Syl for my next Kal painting so if you like what you see, you have her to thank for this one! I originally meant this to be just a sketch but as usual I got a bit carried away and rendered some parts of it more than I initially intended to.

soooo, as one sometimes does in the last few weeks I found myself foraging the swamp that is ao3, my mind finding relaxation in how the light reflects prettily on the murky depths. There is just something fascinating about churning through iteration upon iteration of similar stories and varying interpretations of the same characters. The Harry Potter books get a bad rep these days, understandably connected to the horrid influence their author had on the ugly transphobia in our society. And the books themselves are definitely not beyond critique in many ways. Nevertheless there is a lot stuff about them that's fun and so I enjoy to see what people take and twist and extrapolate into their own versions of the world and the characters. Also because I've been up to my neck in a job, I haven't done a sketch dump in ages. At last, this Fanfic broke the dam Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love by @aibidil I liked it, since the fic features PoVs for all four of the main characters (each of them gets a chapter), which was refreshing and it gave all of their interpersonal relationships a lovely depth. Also it effectively weaves in muggle things and current topics with the world and characters. And it just managed to be extremely funny and endearing, despite the heavy topics which are discussed in it.

So please excuse my little indulgence here. I'll be back to whatever I count as my regular stuff here... (god, I hope I manage to get back to Stormlight this autumn *winks in Inktober*)

also any fic that gives the due diligence to the best character of the series does something right in my book. Drinks with Min! Indeed!

ahhh thank you for messaging, that's so kind!!! a lot of people will post about sanderson's other Cosmere work as well as stormlight, so you may see mistborn, warbreaker, secret project posts etc as well! i'm gonna shout out upfront to @cosmereplay who tags books / spoilers like its a sport, since if you're still reading spoilers are going to be a big deal.

@onlycosmere is a collage of our best (and worst! 😏) content - so even if what they're sharing is broader than stormlight, they'll be a good way to find people making stormlight posts.

and once you're not worried about spoilers @cosmerelists and @thesitcomarchive (if they ever post again. come back to me legend) are hilarious.

we have an awesome artist community here, i'll obviously fail to tag everyone (sorry!) but off the top of my head, @taravangians-storming-balls @comiclysmic @smeegamae @sadibadimadi @stivya @virtualtear00 @nauti-ca @stormlight-archive @lilaeleaf @starling-illu @transkholins @emily-e-draws @duckngk have all made amazing fanart for longer than i've been around on here. and a special mention to @lamaery for both her fanart and her licensed work on both the Words of Radiance leatherbound and the upcoming stormlight rpg!

The Final Empire - Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn Era 1, #1)

5/5 - fabulous characters, heist novel, Vin my beloved!! start of a truly fabulous trilogy, really innovative magic

SPOILERS BELOW!!!

This was the first Sanderson novel I read and it really captured my heart (as it probably obvious). As such, it holds a special place of honor To Me as one of his superior works.

The Final Empire is excellent for a number of reasons. First, it's a heist movie in a book. Think Ocean's 11 (2018). The crew is all very likeable and they come together to put together a truly insane plan. The best part is that, at several points in the story, key elements of the plan go completely wrong. It's delightful. Nothing is better than watching characters who are supposed to be clever actually act clever.

TFE is also distinct amongst many trilogy consisting of a fight against an evil overlord in that the fight happens and succeeds in the very first book. It doesn't take them the usual first attempt, minor success, second attempt horrific failure, and third attempt actual victory that usually happens over the course of fantasy trilogies. This also means they actually have to have the philosophical discussions that usually get tossed to the wayside regarding what to do after a revolution succeeds. Delicious I tell you.

Sanderson is also a master of describing places that are foreign compared to Earth and then sells these concepts by changing the way that characters behave. People thinking plants being green would just be weird? Extra notes of importance on the color white because of all the ash? The world doesn't only look different, which is common in most fantasy settings, but the characters feel like they're from somewhere totally different, which some books are not successful at.

Allomancy as a concept is also something that's super distinctive to me. Sanderson is pretty well-known in fantasy circles for defining "hard" and "soft" magic and he abides pretty strictly by those rules.

And the cherry on top of the cupcake is Vin. My beloved. Her struggle with identity, trust issues, her own power, it's just everything to me. She goes through a whole "I'm not like other girls" arc and yet she's still struggling. She's immensely powerful and yet so inexperienced. I love her. I would do anything for her.

Also Vin and Elend's romance is just so cute. You have to feel for Vin the whole time. They have my whole heart.

Now having read The Secret History, I still harbor some conflicted feelings towards Kelsier. He's such a good father figure to Vin (which makes him dying so heartbreaking) but his whole religious arc still leaves me feeling weird.
