The Brave Little Toaster tankōbon illustrations

These are the gorgeous illustrations from the Japanese hardcover of The Brave Little Toaster. The character designs are very similar to the original versions drawn by Karen Lee Schmidt for the English/French language publications. Even so, I think this the most beautiful the story has ever looked…There’s something wonderfully haunting and evocative about these illustrations; and the lack of anthropomorphic features on the Appliances adds something new! Probably the spookiest version of the Toaster and friends scaring the Junk Pirate. And hooray for more cute Swap Shop Kittens! Also, both Japanese editions feature a picture of the moment when the Radio spies a fox. (Interestingly, the new vacuum cleaner in the City Apartment is shown as an upright model, unlike its counterpart in the paperback bunko, and in the movie- both of which are canister vacuums with hoses! Or a hamburger bun on wheels, as Disch describes it in the book!)

A Glow ~ The Brave Little Toaster Mini Fanfic

Blanky is successfully brought down from the tree branch and gives thanks to Kirby for saving him. While the appliances prepare to travel again, Blanky sees Lampy for the first time since he had been blown away in the storm, his damaged appearance alarms him and he promptly asks,

Blanky: "Lampy, what happened?"

Naively he thought Blanky wouldn't notice. Lampy was truly unaware of how heavily damaged he appeared.

Lampy: "Oh, wow, you noticed that."

He let out a quick cough of static, then he nervously shifted his eyes while answering,

Lampy: "I guess I had an idea that worked a bit too well I guess."

Radio chimed in: "For once, I think I prefer your ideas that don't work. Like that pogo stick idea."

In response, Lampy shot Radio his furled brow.

Toaster swiftly interjected: "Lampy recharged the battery, we wouldn't have been able to continue far without it!"

"Ha ha ha, I sure did, didn't I!" as Lampy said this, he lifted his cord to make a small shrugging gesture, this caused Blanky to see Lampy's cord had been frayed, he gasped in shock, then muttered while covering his mouth,

"How bad did it hurt?"

Lampy: "You know um, quite a lot actually;" He paused to look directly at Blanky, -"But I felt something in that storm, no, something in me, it was like that glow, I hadn't felt that way in so long."

Toaster sent a soft smile to towards Lampy, and Blanky gave him a tight hug, causing him to exhale a few static sparks.

A hug was something Lampy usually didn't allow, instead he relaxed his head against the back of the chair and thought about everything that had happened since they had left the abandoned cottage.

Everything they knew was changing quickly, even themselves.

Watched The Brave Little Toaster recently. Loved it when I was young but now, I have a bigger appreciation for its themes of Simplicity, Self-Worth, and Nostalgia. It's a dark survival/buddy comedy road trip film that I'm disappointed is not on Disney Plus.

The Brave Little Toaster, paperback bunko illustrations!

There have been three Japanese editions of Thomas M Disch’s original ‘The Brave Little Toaster’ novella. One was published in the magazine of Sci Fi and Fantasy, there was also this illustrated paperback bunko, and a tankōbon hardcover which used character designs similar to Karen Lee Schmidt’s art from the 1980 Doubleday/Grafton pressing. The artwork in this paperback is especially cute! I love the depiction of the old and new appliances gathered in the city apartment, and the master and mistress meeting the Swap Shop kittens ☺️
