5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?*

What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?*

For ruining a pairing, I could honestly put many if not most hetero ships in RWBY in this category thanks to fandom bullshit, in particular ANY girl/Jaune ship outside of Arkos, and even that’s shaky for me (I have a special loathing for the Jaune/Harem crowd). Though one case I find particularly unfortunate is Ruby/Oscar, a ship that when if first started cropping up in Volume 4, I thought was kind of cute. But by now it’s gotten tied up in theories and headcanons and people clamoring about how it’s going to happen in-show, all while apparently missing some KEY aspects of Oscar’s character. Namely the fact that Oscar, much like Jaune, is a massive SUBVERSION of a main-character archetype, and not an actual main character.

Which means that it feels like every Ruby/Oscar take I see, at best sounds like it’s treating Oscar as some deuteragonist to Ruby at the expense of Penny or even Ruby’s own teammates, and at WORST sounds like it believes Oscar to somehow be the ‘real main character’ of the show.

I think Ruby and Oscar have a very interesting dynamic in the show itself, like how Ruby acts as a mentor to Oscar in the way that Ozpin failed to do for her. Unfortunately, it feels like much of the shipping for these two has completely missed the memo on any of it.

As for a fandom OTP that I just do NOT get, that’s actually rather difficult. As even for the ships I don’t like, I can generally still trace the ‘logic’ of it to the ‘source’ of the appeal for some people. Even if that source is something as simple as "I think it would be hot if these two fucked" or something as banal as “I want to fantasize about having sex with this pretty girl(s) and am too lazy to come up with my own OC to project onto, so I’ll just project onto this character I find ‘relatable’ and awkwardly crowbar into a generic self-insert mold” -gestures to the vast majority of Jaune/girl ships-

That being said, I have always been rather baffled that the Steven Universe fandom effectively mandala-effected itself into believing that Lapidot was ever anything more than a crackship that the creators threw in because they seemingly somehow ran out of ideas of what to do with Lapis.

Honestly, reading something that features a ship you don't particularly like does feel weird sometimes, and I speak that from experience lmao, but also I have the sliiiight impression that your brain may be thinking that reading it is weird because you feel like you're intruding on something other people may enjoy, but it just isn't your cup of tea. I don't think you're intruding at all, if that reassures you! And also I don't think you're being a little hater. Trust me on that one.

BUT I'M SO GLAD THAT REGARDLESS OF YOU NOT LIKING DOGDAY X CATNAP ALL THAT MUCH YOU STILL ENJOY THE AU, THIS IS SO NICE TO HEAR AAAA. I feel extremely honored to know that I got you into so many more ships, ESP cuddlejump and prometheus. Soooo glad to know I got you into the old people yaoyuri!!!!

In a way, Dogday x Catnap is a crackship by itself, but I think few people refer to it as a one because it can make sense thematically speaking (?), unlike some others (read: Prometheus). I'm glad that you're enjoying the AU regardless of that, tho!!!!! I understand where you come from. I don't think these two are for everyone, esp considering what we know from canon. Regardless, don't forget to have fun! You can always block the Daynap tag here on Tumblr if you don't want to see more of them.

I don't get why lapis x peridot is such a big ship when they had zero chemistry

I think the idea is that they have become besties in the barn, supporting each other while they recover from their Homeworld trauma, mostly Lapis. The two are seen joking with each other, like in Gem Harvest when they are the only ones laughing at Lapis' joke about her traumatic past, so I buy that they're comfortable with each other.

But the thing is, their relationship was actually unhealthy. They were both stagnating in that barn. They had very little hobbies. Peridot was shown walking on eggshells around Lapis, like when she asked Steven to not mention the "J-word" in Beta. And, of course, Raising the Barn showed Lapis regressing immensely under the threat of the Diamonds, not only making the decision to flee from Earth not caring about Peridot's feelings on the matter, but responding to her friend standing up for herself by outright stealing their home with all of their possessions, leaving Peridot behind, with nothing and heartbroken. There is, of course, significance in Lapis taking the symbol of her stagnation with her.

I really thought they'd have more development where they realized that all that time, they only stalled, and didn't actually get to know each other. But no. One "hey" after Lapis out of nowhere crashes the barn on Blue's head, not even the time to talk before Yellow poofs them, and then we skip to the movie where they're besties again. Who cares about all the emotional pain Lapis put Peridot through both at the beginning and the end of their relationship, right? They just made up! Off screen! That's good enough, right?

I get that the finale was rushed to hell, and in the grand scheme of things Lapis and Peridot were not as important as the Diamonds, but as someone who had been the Peridot in a friendship, this genuinely hurt me and it was the #1 reason Lapidot became my NOTP.

In the end, I think Lapidot is yet another case of a super popular ship that benefited from a lack of screentime. We know they lived together, we just didn't get to see much of it, allowing shippers to come up with scenarios where they'd bond. Even though canon proved that they really didn't.

I recommend reading that Reddit thread I linked. I have kept it in my bookmarks ever since Raising the Barn aired because it was like someone fished in my brain and pulled out all of my thoughts about Lapis and Peridot's unhealthy, immature relationship.
