After having seen this movie a million times 🙈 we were finally able to go to one of its filming locations in London... ❤️😍 and we were like kids on Christmas morning 🤣
In addition, of course, we read all the comics from The Old Guard created by Greg Rucka who also wrote the film and the one to come.  😁
And how can I tell you that we are waiting for The Old Guard 2 like the messiah 😂
Do you like the movie too?

I hope tumblr doesn’t die because No other social media site is as good for long, thoughtful, nuanced analyses of media. Yeah tumblr is also full of dumb shallow hot takes and shitposts, but you can make dumb shallow hot takes and shitposts anywhere —-there are no other popular social media sites that let you easily format and share long essays on the media you enjoy, and then have conversations around those long essays.
Fandom on all the other big social websites just seems so utterly …shallow. And it’s not because people on other websites aren’t thoughtful or don’t have deep things to say, but because these sites’ formats do not allow for any kind of long nuanced conversations.
Tiktok? Things have to be crammed into a super short video with an attention grabbing headline, and you can’t hyperlink sources. Instagram? Everything has to be in an image format with strict limits on length, and nothing will be shown to your followers anyway because of how Instagram’s algorithm works, and also no hyperlinks. Twitter? Strict character limits, and if you split it into threads it means someone can retweet a part of your essay completely out of context, and also very little freedom with formatting.
It frustrates me so much. If I go into the Tumblr Les Mis fandom I’ll find really compelling long essays on the original novel (including essays being written for the ongoing book club) on the story’s historical context, or the parallels between different characters and their narrative foils, or the way the politics were defanged for certain adaptations, or the way Victor Hugo’s personal life and failings affected the novel. But on tiktok I’ll get the same five shallow stale jokes from 2013 over and over, or maybe the same “DID U KNO THAT IN THE MUSICAL JAVERT AND VALJEAN SING THE SAME LEITMOTIF” style of basic Intro To Les Mis 101 For Babies media analysis (which is what Tiktok considers deep media analysis), or stale “LOL JAVERT ACTS GAY” style jokes as if we’re living in the early 2000s and calling a character gay is still a funny punchline. And it’s impossible to have any kind of deeper thoughtful discussions than “DID U KNOW <x Kool Fact>” or “lol <shallow observational joke>” on tiktok because the platform just isn’t built for building niche communities around in depth conversations. it’s built to churn out bland generic content for as wide an audience as possible, which means pointing out a small detail like an Easter egg and calling it “cool” is deep media analysis, because you cant have longer more in depth conversations without alienating people. And I hate it. Bc like, it’s not because there aren’t smart clever thoughtful people on Tiktok— there are—it’s because Tiktok isn’t built for these conversations, and anyone who wants to have them has to really fight against the things the website encourages or prioritizes!
Or like, if I go into the LOTR fandom on Tumblr, I’ll find tons of extremely long analysis and fanfic, and analysis of queer readings of the story. On Instagram people will still shriek in terror if you suggest the characters are gay, and most of the popular lotr posts are stale memes recycled from like 2007. There’s really no room for thoughtful media analysis, and even if you did create it, instagram’s algorithm would make sure no one saw your post anyway.
And everyone’s going to say “the algorithm shows you what you’ve seen before so maybe it’s your fault ~” or whatever but i do look for things I want! I do! “The algorithm” doesn’t know me or what I want or value or care about beyond this meaningless surface level.
The only thing that was worthwhile about these sites was the great visual art people were creating, but now the websites are overwhelmed with meaningless soulless machine-generated AI glurge, and it sucks. It just really, really sucks.
I’m honestly confused about why people don’t use tumblr….There’s no character limits! You have freedom with post formatting, and can insert images throughout textposts to illustrate specific points you’re making beneath the paragraphs where they’re necessary! You can add hyperlinks, linking to your sources! People can reblog your entire essay and share it, and then add on with commentary that then becomes part of a larger conversation! People can find your stuff through the tagging system! Reblogging means posts stay in circulation for years instead of being dead 30 minutes after they’re uploaded! If you want to have genuinely interesting text conversations about a piece of media, there really isn’t a better social media website for it anywhere.
To be clear, I’m definitely not saying Tumblr media analysis is *always* clever and thoughtful or etc etc. there are shitposts and nonsense here too (plenty of which I’ve created lol.) I’m saying that Tumblr gives people the tools for in-depth insightful analysis to happen. Whether people choose to do it or not is their own decision XD. But the reason lengthy in-depth conversations and book clubs are even possible here is because Tumblr is built for allowing these conversations to happen, in a way other sites simply aren’t.
It’d really suck if it died, because it’d be a huge blow to…being able to easily find long insightful in-depth media analysis written by fans. I currently don’t think there’s anything that could replace it.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes & "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas"
wikipedia/tbosas movie/"the ones who walk away from omelas"/tbosas ch. 28-30/excerpt from an undergrad essay i wrote
Notes:
In no way is the Games necessary for the Capitol in the same way allegorical's Omelas' suffering child is for that city, but the idea of The Ones Who Walk Away at the end of that short story always sticks with me. in my interpretation, they're going "towards a place even less imaginable to most of us than the city of happiness" is them pursuing a place where people can be happy and no one has to suffer. Maybe, it doesn't exist, but it's worth a look, right?
Also I know the image that tbosas leaves us isn't of people walking away, but... they want to... they want to so bad that I am counting it.

The Haunted Atlas
Calvados Castle (Château des Noyers du Tourneur) - Le Tourneur, France, European Union
48°57′51″N / 0°49′20″W
This Norman castle was subject to such a severe poltergeist haunting from October 12, 1875, to at least September 1876 that the owners were driven from the premises. The most plausible explanation advanced for the haunting was that it was caused by the previous owner, a woman who had died impenitent and was believed to have returned to her castle. In the written accounts given of the hauntings, individuals are identified only by initials.
Calvados Castle was a replacement of an earlier castle, belonging to the B. family, which had fallen into a state of disrepair. In 1867, it was inherited by Monsieur and Madame de X. The new owners were subjected to strange noises and blows at night which eventually abated. Then, for unknown reasons, the noises resumed with greater fury in October 1875. At that time, the castle was occupied by M. and Mme. de X. and their son; the Abbe Y., who was the boy’s tutor; and four domestic employees. The person who was plagued the most by the haunting was the Abbe.
The haunting resumed with the movement of furniture and with nightly thumps and great blows in various rooms, so loud and strong that the entire castle shook. The residents also heard "some being” going up and down the stairs with superhuman speed. One night, M. de X wrote in his diary:
“At 2 A.M. some being rushed at top speed up the stairs from the entrance hall to the first floor, along the passage, and up to the second floor, with a loud noise of tread which had nothing human about it. Everybody heard it. It was like two legs deprived of their feet and walking on the stumps. Then we heard numerous loud blows on the stairs and the door of the green room.”
In addition to the rushing and the blows, the residents heard cries or a long drawn-out trumpet call, followed by shrieks that sounded like a woman in misery calling for help from outside the castle. Inspections were made but nothing was ever found.
By mid-November 1875, stifled cries and sounds of a woman sobbing were heard all over the house not only at night but during the day as well. The words "of demons or the damned" were discerned.
The Abbe, who always took great care to lock his room whenever he left it, invariably found upon his return that furniture had been moved, the closed window had been opened, and his possessions had been strewn about. Once, about 100 of his books were knocked to the floor, save for three books of the Holy Scriptures. On another occasion, the Abbe was reading at about five in the evening when a great quantity of water crashed down the chimney, put out the fire and spewed ashes in his face. The day had been sunny and clear, in the midst of a drought.
The poltergeist also played an organ which was closed and locked, turned keys in locks in front of eyewitnesses, and made sounds of bodies or cannonballs falling down the stairs and sticks jumping up and down on their ends. Galloping and stampeding noises went on nightly. Humanlike cries continued to be heard, including that of a man who once was heard to cry, "Ha! Ha!"
M. de X. initially thought humans were responsible. He theorized that others who coveted the castle and grounds might be trying to scare him away and sell it for a fraction of its value. He bought two watchdogs which proved to be useless. Only once did they bark in the direction of a garden thicket. Their barks changed to whines and they ran away, refusing to return to the thicket. A search of the bushes revealed nothing. M. de X. then had to consider supernatural causes; the Abbe believed the haunting to be the work of the Devil. M. de X. appealed to ecclesiastical authorities for help.
On January 5, 1876, the Rev. Fr. H. L. arrived lo investigate. An immediate calm set in, and nothing happened as long as he was in the house. On January 15, he performed a religious ceremony (the exact nature is not specified in the records). The noises began again, but in parts of the castle too remote for him to hear. The Rev. Fr. H. L. left on January 17, and the disturbances renewed with great intensity.
By January 28, the desperate family had a Novena of Masses said at Lourdes for them and had exorcisms performed. Church officials were of the opinion that the nature of the haunting was "diabolically supernatural." Following the exorcisms, calm reigned for two or three days. Then small noises and disturbances began once again, increasing to great frequency by August 1876. In September, following loud noises during the night, M. de X. opened the drawing room to find all the furniture rearranged in a horseshoe, as though a meeting had taken place. He sat down and played his harmonium for a long time. When he was finished, his playing was repeated for a long time in an opposite corner of the room.
Finally, M. and Mme. de X. could stand no more. They sold the castle and moved. The records do not indicate if the castle went cheaply, as M. de X. had feared. It is not known if subsequent occupants were haunted. The case remains unexplained.

The Musée Grévin, which Christine mentions in Leroux‘s novel, is home to the "Palais des Mirages", the inspiration for Erik's torture chamber. It was constructed in 1908 as a copy of the same room that was first exhibited at the World Exposition in 1900. This giant kaleidoscope was invented by the engineer Eugène Hénard and is built almost exactly the same as the Persian describes the torture chamber in the novel:
"We were in the middle of a small hexagonal room. All six of its walls were covered with mirrors from top to bottom. Clearly visible in the corners were segments of mirrors attached to drums that could be rotated."
Just like the description suggests, the room consists of 6 large mirrors and 6 smaller, rotating segments in the corners. The light show that creates the kaleidoscope effects lasts for about 2 minutes.
Contrary to what the ALW musical suggests, it‘s not a „maze of mirrors“, it‘s really just one small room that is made to look bigger by the effects of the mirrors.
The Palais des Mirages has been recently redesigned with a new show, which also includes a "jungle" theme by artist Eriko Nagata. That was really cool to see because it gives a much clearer idea about how Erik's own "African jungle/desert" could have looked like.

@duunswitch said: "Baby glitterbug!" Don't mind Le just crashing herself into the sand at their feet. "Sorry, I tried to get here sooner but things were a bit weird–what happened? All they said was there was a greater fae involved and they couldn't help."
Does he even wanna ask who 'they' is in this instance...? Not like he can really spare the time, lit up and glowing like a Christmas display with a passed out Knives dangling off of him. Feather-like wisps of energy have even begun to sprout from a few different parts of his face.
It seems to be doing the trick; a gathering of dark clouds and lightning were visible on the horizon, slowly approaching their location.
"Le?" like it could be anyone else. Vash just kind of can't believe her timing, eyes a little wide. "I-- Knives, he-- I--"
... hah.
