WOF Leafwing concept art. My aim here was to showcase some wings based on actual leaf types found in nature.
Read below cut for close-ups of each individual art & wing type.
I’m least familiar with arc 3 in the series, but I’m catching up slowly but surely and working on some cool headcannons & art for ya’ll! Which leaf shape do you like best?

Could you to Willow? She's my fav and I can't believe she's not on the list!
Of course! Here's my willow redesign:
Tumblr media
Willow's was a redesign I was super excited to do, mostly because I had a lot of ideas surrounding how I could change her appearance to better suit her name and personality! I did like willow's canon design, but I always thought it was a little bit bland compared to some of the other leafwings and wanted to right that wrong.
The most obvious changes I made were to Willow's body shape and webs - when making this design, I wanted to go for a gentle-giant look (and yes I am imagining Willow as 4x bigger than Sundew,) mimicking the height and size of a willow tree by giving her a more graceful/smooth body shape that bends like the tree's branches. In order to fully accomplish this Willow-look, I also made her spine webs much longer and droopier - kind of like a horse's mane. The finishing touch to this transformation was adding long willow branch patterns on her web membrane. The end result is still more subtle than I would've liked, but the alternative (giving her willow branches that looked like hair) made Willow look like she was from a totally different tribe. RIP.
I kept her colors slightly the same, using light fern greens for her scales and wing patterns but adding darker tones for her wing/webs/horns. The pattern itself is very fluid, with swirls and small leaf-veins on her legs and stomach. I think this might just be the least jagged pattern I've ever used on a redesign, since most of my works will have at least some element of sharpness in the pattern! While I am slightly worried that this doesn't look like Willow anymore, I guess my redesign wouldn't be very good if she came out looking exactly how she went in.
Thanks so much for checking this design out! As always, I am still taking requests - and my pinned post includes a ton of useful information, such as which characters are on the waitlist and my artfight/discord/art contest links!
later! 。゚( ゚^∀^゚)゚。

LeafWing Study!
Featuring the colours of Roridula, a character from a possible future project. She's named after a carnivorous plant :)
Details, explanation, and more art below. Otherwise, next week are the SeaWings. See you then!!
More Tribe Studies
Tumblr media
Here is the first time I'm showing my full-body headcanon LeafWing design. I remember being disappointed that they didn't have four wings, and when I learned that technically the SilkWings/BeetleWings were the only tribe with four wings?? (The HiveWings got them only for being an offshoot of the BeetleWing tribe, but I still couldn't cope, lol).
I am not up to date on WOF lore so while you can correct me, please keep that in mind XD
I simply had fun designing them after lead-mimicking insects and geckos. I wanted to keep as much of the original design as possible while serving more of a leaf mimicry design. So the four wings work in tandem with the enlarged tail sail to make the whole dragon look like the end of a branch. They would do this formation on specific trees, otherwise they keep all 4 flat along their tail to look like one leaf. They have the extra frills on their legs so they can do a standing version of this if they're caught off-guard.
All of this would serve the purpose of visual camouflage. I read on the wiki that the Poison Jungle had extra large fauna and I ran with it. Perhaps in the past the jungle stretched farther, or the megafauna had access to more of the continent. Either way, the LeafWings had to hide, and they learned how to do it quite well.
The last thing I did was double the back sail and move it to the sides, so it doesn't look like a discount SeaWing. Sorry, but I wanted a more unique silhouette. That back spine design was already used for the SeaWings and I thought a smooth back would serve their camouflage better. They use their double frills to make their necks look thicker when they pretend to be a single leaf. I'll post some sketches of LeafWings camouflaging sometime!

I swear I'm not a wof blog I swear. Anyway, here's the bugs and a plant for some reason
Transcribed notes and other info on these guys:
the little doodles are just scribbles about where and their special glands are (which are colored yellow) amd how they work. From the top down and left to right, they say
'wrist spinneret with starter, mouth gland with proteins, combining them causes a chemical reaction makes a lot of quick-hardening silk.'
'Venom (soldier or Queen)
Worker-similar to silkwing silk
Drone-nothing in wrist'
'Extended periods of inactive sun time helps store energy' slightly to the left is 'like a leaf', slightly below is 'ambush attacks'
'No acid or venom, but secretes poisonous mucus and saliva' then to the right is 'very scary-looking because they have skin with bones under it instead of am exoskeleton'
Next to beetlewing head says 'acid spitting glands' below that says 'spinnerets on tail for building and subduing prey'
Some other general info:
silkwings are the smallest pantalan tribe amd they're omnivores, primarily eating plants but opportunistically scavenging when possible. they have a long tongue and a set of spinners in their mouth, the tongue being their to access the flowers, bugs, and fruit from the giant plants on the continent. the spinnarets from both their mouth and wrist have to be mixed to create the strong substance they use for building and defense (there is a ratio they can mix it at that causes it to combust when exposed to air and slung at enemies) the scakes on their wings are a bit poisonous but otherwise they have few defenses beyond this, they're also slow clumsy fliers. they have an exoskeleton but they also have an active respiratory system (so they actually breathe in and out unlike a real butterfly i think) unlike hivewings, they're not eusocial but they have been forced into those roles by the hivewing occupation. they're what's left of the beetlewings, having changed drastically in appearance over the years due to a lot of different pressures.
hivewings are large and omnivorous, but primarily eat meat to help fuel their flight. they're bipedal when on the ground, standing in a weird splayed fashion but able to run at fairly high speeds. when in flight, just like silkwings, they use both their leg wings and chest wings. hivewings can buzz them both at extremely high speeds and therefore fly much quicker and with more agility. also like silkwings, they have an exoskeleton and lungs, and their ither organs are stored in their abdomen tail thing to keep them away from the massive internal muscles needed to twitch their wings that fast. they are eusocial, and have several different classes. soldiers, workers, and queens are all female, and while they're larger than drones the queen is the largest (laying all the eggs in the colony. there are several dozen queens and hives on the continent, but they all answer to one). workers have a setup similar to silkwings where they can mix substances from their mouth and wrist to help them build the hive and trap prey. soldiers can't do this, and only have venom in their mouth and tail like a queen. drones are only there for the queen and don't do much else, having very little political or social power. hivewings are another offshoot from beetlewings that was mixed with some nightwings (which is why their faces, horns, and spines look a bit nightwing-ish and where their black coloring and sparkles of white dots on their wings came from)
leagwings are the only vertebrates, and look very scary to the others with their transparent skin, large eyes, and bones. they spend most of the day immobile somewhere in the sun, only occasionally moving to get water or ambush prey. their many frills help maximize surface area to photosynthesize with. they're entirely carnivorous when not getting energy from the sun. they're much more active at night, using the battery of energy they got from the day before returning to somewhere high and exposed to the sin so that when morning comes they can start to recharge. their main defenses are their teeth and claws, but they can also secrete a poisonous substance from their mouth and skin to deter others. it's mainly disorienting, but in a high enough dose it will kill. their long frog like kegs are for jumping from tree to tree and gor climbing because it's harder for them to work up the energy for takeoff from the ground. some of them are also magic and can control plants (magic is also how the One Queen can control all hivewings, but they also have their own natural pheremone signals) they have largely been wipes out thanks to outcompetition, habitat loss, and deliberate extermination on sight, but pockets of them are still around. they may have been from the same place as rainwings and share some of their features, but have changed drastically from those roots.
no one really knows a lot about beetlewongs because the version I drew is now extinct, but they were likely omnivores with both acidic spit and spinnerets, along with heavy armor. unlike their descendents they're still built more like a dragon from phyrria (idk if I spelled that right) with their big wing limbs being in front with the little arms being behind them instead of the other way around.
I decided to keep them all hexopods even though I think the hive and silk officially have another smaller pair of wing things (bringing them closer to being 8 legged in my version of things)

Fen redesign! He’s part silkwing, that’s where the ‘variegated’ pale patches come from. His accessories were made by his friend! The little bag over his shoulder is made of woven silkwing silk and he fills it with fruits and berries that he brings back to give his friend :p

sundew pretty please i just love your style sm
Of course! here's my take:
Tumblr media
@ardienothesieno , @natureforlife , and @buonsai also requested this redesign and here it is!
I wanted Sundew's design to mirror the plant she's named after, by adding more orange-pink tones into her design and including these little webbed dots that reminded me of sundew droplets.
As for the rest of her colors, I tried to stay true to her original design as much as possible through the use of dark green shades and gold markings. Of course, I did end up putting a spin on things when it came to her limbs - mostly because I needed to balance the overall colors in the design. I added some red polka dots to mimic the sundew plant again, as well as changing her web/under eye color to be more orange-red. As for her wings, I honestly wasn't really sure what to do since sundew plants don't have a leafwing shape at all. I kind of just mimicked a leaf pattern in orange to keep it consistent, adding small green veins in the wing membrane.
The most interesting part of redesigning Sundew was definitely the vest! I was never really able to conceptualize her pouches when reading the book, although I think that's probably because of how they kind of just appeared whenever she needed them and weren't really described in full. So it was a joy to finally sit down and design Sundew a real combat vest, with enough pouches and flexibility to accommodate her occupation and also act as a little bit of camouflage. Sundew was definitely one of my favorites from arc 3 - and I don't know if it was just me, but I always imagined her sounding like tigress.
Thanks so much for this request! If you haven't seen my blog before and you'd like to request a character for redesigning, please head over to my inbox or check my pinned post to see if your favorite is already on the waitlist! And of course, since it's pride month, Willow will also be posted after this. To anyone wondering, my art contest is still running until the end of the month! You can find a link to my discord server (Where it's held) on my pinned post!
