It's Starkid Innit
Heya, Ella from @challengecomplete-ed here
So it's obviously been a very exciting week for British starkids (understatement of the year) and I hope you're all looking forward to May as much as I am
Honestly this all happened so fast I still can't quite believe it's happening!
Anyway, I've seen loads of people sharing their excitement/saying they want to connect with other people who are going etc and I thought it would be nice to create a space for us to connect/share ideas/build hype etc
So that's what this is
If you ever want to find other people who are attending, share your perfect setlist, discuss outfit ideas, or just scream with excitement then this is the place to do it
As an intro, Hi, I'm Ella and I've been a fan of starkid since 2011. I was lucky enough to see starkid at leakycon London in 2013 and since about 2017 had given up any hope of them ever performing here again so currently living in a bit of a daze. Oh and I'll be in the stalls at the matinee
See you all there!
#honestly at the rate we're going starkid won't be back in the UK until 2035#so we might as well build some hype lol#starkid#team starkid

Many of Felton’s fans replied to the Instagram post with excitement:
This artist gives me a storm of emotions and these songs mean a lot to all the fans, proud!
Fans eagerly awaited new music from Felton after his last EP release, YoOHoO, in 2021. Reactions to the 2024 album have been nothing but overjoyed support and praise for the actor-turned-singer. Many fans commented that Felton is in his “Gryffindor era” after noticing the album’s bold red hue, which is the associated House color of Gryffindor.
Felton is no stranger to a microphone. Among several singles, his previous EP releases include Time Well Spent (2008), All I Need (2008), In Good Hands (2009), Hawaii (2011), and YoOHoO (2021). Music has always been a passion for the Harry Potter celebrity. When asked about music in an interview with Feltbeats, Felton disclosed that he would bring his guitar to the set of Harry Potter every day to sing and practice during downtime. More recently, Felton serenaded attendees of the magical fan convention LeakyCon with his original music.

okay so you said more info than wikipedia but streamlined so i'm going to do a timeline rundown of starkid as a company and kinda just sprinkle in some tidbits that seem important enough to include. sorry if this is too long and also sorry if i didn't actually end up giving you the info you were hoping for but hopefully this is helpful?
team starkid is a theater production company that was founded in 2009 by a few theater kids at the university of michigan. these founders were brian holden, darren criss, matt lang and nick lang. their youtube channel is team starkid, but the company is officially called starkid productions. most people just call them starkid.
their tumblr account is @the-real-team-starkid btw
it started with them making a harry potter parody musical in july 2009 called a very potter musical. they posted it on youtube to share with friends and family, but it went viral (especially on tumblr; anyone on this hellsite circa 2009-2012 has probably seen posts with starkid gifs or references at least once. it's how i discovered them in 2012!) their production company was formed after this show went viral.
also in 2009, they posted a web series called little white lies (though this series was actually made in 2007 i believe?) and another musical, this one not a parody, called me and my dick.
in july 2010, they posted a very potter sequel.
also in 2010, one of the founders, darren criss, got a recurring role as blaine in glee, which turned into a permanent main character role, which kind of boosted his career as an actor and made it so he was very busy very often. he is still to this day involved with starkid, but he's not in the writing credits for shows or anything like he used to be. from what i can tell, he's more just involved in the background business side of things, though he'd said multiple times that out of everything he's done in his career starkid is one of the things he's most proud of being part of and he clearly loves it a lot.
in april 2011, they posted starship, an original musical about an alien bug-world and space and robot wars. v cool bug puppets are used.
also in 2011, they went on their first tour, the S.P.A.C.E. tour.
in 2012, they went on their second tour, the APOCALYPTOUR.
in april 2012, they posted holy musical b@tman, a parody musical about batman. this is unironically my favorite take on batman.
also in 2012, they filmed a very potter senior year at leakycon, which they then posted in 2013. this is not a full production, a lot of the cast have their scripts with them on stage, but it concludes the trilogy.
in 2013 they did their first sketch show. and their second one.
in november 2013 they posted twisted: the untold story of a royal vizier. this is kind of a parody show as well. it's also basically if wicked was for jafar from aladdin instead of the wicked witch of the west.
in october 2014, they posted ANI: a parody, which is a parody musical about star wars.
in february 2015, they posted the trail to oregon! this is an original musical about a family embarking down the trail to oregon. the audience picks the characters names and chooses the ending.
in december 2016, they posted firebringer, an original musical about a group of people in the stone-age discovering fire.
in october 2017, they posted a web series called movies, musicals & me which is basically a bunch of mini parody musical episodes of different movies. it has ten episodes for ten movies, which are:
forrest gump
hulk
thod
terminator
castaway
50 shades of grey
star wars
the social network
the force awakens
home alone
in december 2018, they posted the guy who didn't like musicals, a horror comedy musical about a musical apocalypse. this is the first of what is now known as the hatchetfield saga, a series of projects that are based in alternate universes of a town called hatchetfield.
in 2019 they lauched a ten year anniversary kickstarter for two projects in one. the first was a reunion concert in july that paid tribute to the past 10 years of starkid, including almost everyone who had ever been involved with starkid throughout the years coming together to perform songs from their various shows. this was called starkid: homecoming and it is only available via digital purchase on their website. there is, however, an hour long behind the scenes video for starkid: homecoming that is on youtube.
the second project in this kickstarted was black friday, the second horror comedy musical in the hatchetfield saga. this was posted in february 2020 and is about a popular kids toy doll being in hot demand as people shop for christmas present on black friday.
when covid hit, starkid made it work by doing a series called nightmare time, which consists of three episodes telling different tales based in the hatchetfield saga. the first episode, filmed over zoom, was posted in october of 2020. the second and third episodes were posted in february of 2021.
in may 2022, they posted the first episode of nightmare time 2, which contains four more episodes telling tales based in the hatchetfield saga.
in november 2022, they posted vhs christmas carol: live, a starkid immersive holiday show with "a rocking 80s score" that they've performed and toured in both 2023 and 2024.
on october 13, 2023, which was also friday the 13th, they released nerdy prudes must die, another addition to the hatchetfield saga. this one is a slasher horror comedy musical about seniors in high school where people go missing and losers start dying.
in april 2024 they posted workin' boys, which is based on the musical within the musical in the guy who didn't like musicals.
right now, they have two projects that are supposed to be getting posted soon, though the fires in LA have caused them to postpone a bit as their company is now based in LA and they obviously want to make sure everyone is home and safe first and foremost. sometime this year, however, both being stated to drop in early 2025, they're going to be posting cindarella's castle and space baby.
according to their website, space baby is a result of starkid labs, which is a result of their starkid returns campaign, which is essentially a fundraising campaign they did as covid restrictions loosened to help fund multiple projects. starkid labs is for experimental workshops and projects. also listed is a project called sissy, which is a play reading, and a project called this title is permanent, which is a podcast. neither of these things have been given release dates as far as i can tell, but they are in the process.
space baby, however, is supposed to be getting posted once the LA fires are under control and the members of starkid are home and safe. it's an anthology series that "follows the ingergalactic adventures of a timeless, telepathic tot on a quest to discover the origins of existence iself." it does not say how many episodes it will have but it does say "it's sesame street meets david lynch."
cinderella's castle is a full musical that is set to be posted on their youtube "early 2025" and is "a grim retelling of [cinderella]" that is "filled with humor, puppetry and a fantastic musical score"
so that's the timeline of starkid's works with some extra tidbits of their projects thrown in. i will also add this real quick:
the hatchetfield saga is very rich with lore, the series page on the starkid fandom wiki literally has 786 items listed that discuss elements of the series. the nightmare times are not absolutely necessary in order to watch the main three musicals, but they add a lot to the world building and to the lore of the saga and knowing them makes the viewing of the main musicals even better. right now, the hatchetfield saga is definitely what starkid is most known for, especially since the release of nerdy prudes must die, which seemed to introduce a lot of people to starkid who didn't know about them before. it's incredible, but all of their works are incredible.
also a lot of people have been with starkid since the first year or two of the company being founded. joey richter and lauren lopez, for example, have been in most of the projects since a very potter musical (lauren i think has been in literally all of them, and joey has been in most but not all). corey dorris was in me and my dick, starkid's second posted musical, and has been in a lot of shows since then, including all of the hatchetfield saga. there are many more examples to give but basically it's just a cool thing to highlight, that many people have been with starkid since 2009 and are still with them today.
last thing i'll include is that starkid members have a few other groups that they are involved with, which are not starkid but a lot of people who enjoy starkid also enjoy these groups.
tin can bros is one of them - it's a media production company started by members of starkid, joey richter, corey lubowich, and brian rosenthal. they have a few shows posted there, as well as web series and other forms of media that are very fun.
STARRY is a pop rock musical written by starkid member matt dahan, and his writing partner kelly lynne d'angelo, and it's about theo and vincent van gogh. multiple members of starkid are part of the cast (dylan saunders, jaume lyn beatty, mariah rose faith casillas, jeff blim, and lauren lopez) and it's due for a premiere on the west end.
there are some more (listed here) but those two i just wanted to highlight. anyways this is way too long and probably not the response you were hoping for but hopefully it's somewhat helpful?? lol
This is random as shit, I know, but can someone break down what Team Starkid actually is? I need to learn about them for an upcoming venture.
PS: I would like more info than Wikipedia, but just like a streamlined version.
#starkid#team starkid#starkid productions#ok i spent way too long on this bc i wanted to have links#it's now 11 pm and i really need to not be awake until 3am again so i am going to sleep now#hope this helps for your starkid related venture op!!

Yesterday I saw Leakycon 2011 on youtube. Both Lauren and Joey have an uncomfortable attitude among themselves, as if they could not look at each other at certain times. This is my theory: Joey seems to have told Lauren what he felt and she rejected him, but she seemed regretted, or at least, thinking that perhaps what she felt about him would end up disappearing. But Joey was still the same sweet boy with her.... Like when he sits next to her, and they hold hands. They seem incredibly nervous cause of it
I always took it as them knowing they liked each other, which I’m sure they did, but also knowing they ‘couldn’t’ do anything about it, so there was a little bit of awkwardness. Like they were still best friends but I do feel like there was a period of time where they did have that kind of vibe around each other. Because they’re both also VERY soft

Notable Notes:
This production won the 2011 “Best New Work” award from BroadwayWorld’s Chicago theatre awards
Starship is Starkid’s first show that they produced independently from the University of Michigan! The show opened in Chicago, where the following few shows were produced before a majority of the most active members moved to Los Angeles prior to The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals, which opened in 2018
StarKid had their own short segment on MTV that highlighted certain aspects of the production such as Criss’ music and the puppetry (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlnIXIGrjVg). At that point in time, Darren Criss was already a television favorite due to his role as Blaine Anderson on Glee, who joined the cast during its second season
The show’s cast album debuted at number one on Billboard’s Top Cast Albums within three days of its release and at the 134th spot during that week’s Billboard’s Top 200 chart (x)
The opening sequence features cameos from other StarKid members such as Chris Allen, Tyler Brunsman, Richard Campbell, Britney Coleman, Arielle Goldman, Devin Lytle, Lily Marks, Nicholas Joseph Strauss-Matathia, and Brian Rosenthal. The same sequence was narrated by actor Bob Joles (AKA Man Ray in Spongebob Squarepants)
***Fun Facts provided by Abby:
Nick and Dylan think the worst StarKid song is ‘Hideous Creatures’
During a rehearsal, Joey told Nick that he thought the choreography for ‘Beauty’ was boring. Then Nick asked him, “Do you want to choreograph the number?" and then walked out of the room.
There was a theoretical sequel to Starship in which Taz and Up arrest Spaceclaw but get injured by an explosion. Up ends up in the hospital because of his injuries, and while Taz waits for him to heal, she has flashbacks of when they first met and the missions they went on together (Taz’s quinceañera, etc.)
Lauren: I'd like to imagine that Taz has that same hairstyle just in a big quinceañera dress
Once during rehearsal, they were all in a bad mood during ‘Beauty’. Darren wanted to surprise the cast with a visit, so he burst into the theatre singing the song and was just met by silence
At LeakyCon 2014 on Orlando, StarKid were invited as guests and performed a staged reading of a one-act sequel to Starship called Starship: Requiem.
Official synopsis: The story follows the adventures of Mega-Girl the robot and her half-witted Starship Ranger husband. The newlyweds are sucked into a black hole of trouble when they go to visit Mega-Girl’s human-hating family, including her overbearing mother-unit, her jealous sister-unit and the return of her hunky ex-boyfriend-unit. (x)
Cultural Context: 2011
The production’s MTV segment aired a little over a week after Glee’s “Original Song” episode, which featured Kurt and Blaine’s long-awaited first kiss [rip Pavarotti]
Prince William and Kate Middleton get married
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 premieres on July 15th
Beyoncé announces her pregnancy during her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards
“Friday” by Rebecca Black gets released in March
In early May, President Obama announces that Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces
New York becomes the sixth state to legalize same-sex marriage on June 24th
The 9/11 Memorial Museum opens to the public on the tenth anniversary of the attacks
Content Analysis:
During my time on social media, I have found that Starship is one of the StarKid shows that gets discussed the least. Up until the show’s debut in StarKid’s history, the only shows they’ve done were AVPM and AVPS, both major viral hits, and MAMD, which reached popularity partly because it was released after StarKid became known for AVPM. Coming off of their great and unexpected successes with these productions, one would think that there would be a bigger fandom for Starship. It’s their second show that is based on original content rather than being a parody, and the production quality is the strongest in their repertoire, considering the funds they gained from their album sales for MAMD and their growing merchandise sales for their Potter musical series.
Personally, it’s one of my favorite StarKid shows because of the production quality and because the performances are so strong. Joey Richter makes a perfect leading man, and seeing how his general abilities as a performer have grown since MAMD has been delightful. His vocal range got stronger and more pronounced and he has a very confident stage presence, especially since Starship was StarKid’s first production independent of the University of Michigan’s monetary assistance and performance space. Lauren Lopez and Dylan Saunders do such an incredible job at playing two completely different characters themselves within the same show. Saunders plays Tootsie Noodles, a lovable idiot with a heart of gold who falls in love with a robot of all things, while also playing Pincer, the villainous instigator of the plot. Lopez has a similar about-face in character portrayal. She plays Buggette, a bug who’s in a helpless one-sided romantic relationship with Bug, and then two seconds later Lopez transforms into Taz, a kickass Latina Starship Ranger with excellent comedic presence and the undisputed leader of the group before Up regains his confidence as commander.
Starship is very unique in that about half of the characters in the show are portrayed by puppets, which themselves are incredibly designed, but unlike other productions that use puppets, they do not detract from the actor’s performance of the character. StarKid did a very good job in ensuring that the puppets are not a gimmick, but rather a compliment, to their individual actor’s portrayal of the character. All actors who play puppet roles do such a great job of vocalizing their character that, despite the design of the puppet not having the ability to change facial features, make the puppets feel so alive that it’s almost like watching a live-action animated movie (the good kind we’ve yet to experience, not the Disney kind). If there is any one thing that Starship represents for the company as a whole, it’s that character creation and embodiment make up the heartblood of the performances. Aside from the vocal performances, the facial expressions and physicality of the performances add so much to the puppetry performances, even when the focus on the character isn’t their physical representation but their dialogue and place in the plot. Regardless of whether or not the recording is emphasizing the puppet itself during a scene, the actor controlling the puppet is using perfect facial expressions and has matching body language with the puppet, which not only helps the actor stay in character, but gives more life to the puppet itself.
While I am eternally grateful that StarKid to this day ensures that their musical productions are put on YouTube for free, there are two very clear downsides that make themselves especially present in the recording. One is that, unlike in live theatre where any audience member can choose who and what to look at onstage at any given time, the camera is the one dictating what each audience member can focus on. Generally speaking, that isn’t too much of a detriment as most of the shots StarKid uses tend to showcase the most important characters during each scene, which any audience member would do if they were to attend a production live, but because StarKid members are so adept at character performance, it really makes me wish that I can look more at the ensemble’s performances during group scenes, or secondary character’s reactions during smaller scenes in which their character may not be the main focus.
Another thing was the general editing style. Though it did not necessarily take away anything from the performance itself or make watching the recording any less enjoyable, there were some editing choices that I felt were too distracting for what the scene called for in the show. For example, when Crayonder mentions to Taz that he thinks that Commander Up has “gone soft” since the injury he sustained in the Robot War, twice does the camera pause on his face and a record scratch and ‘booooo’ track is heard overlaid onto the scene. I understand the comedic nature of that bit in retrospect, but for a viewer, regardless of whether or not they are watching the show for the first time, it’s very distracting and forcibly shifts the audience’s focus on the story and the characters to a one-off joke. For a first-time viewer, that editing choice especially does not have as much impact as it does for a recurring viewer, as at that point in the story, the audience is only just being introduced to the characters and has no personal connection to Up and his backstory, making the effect of the joke less successful. As well, throughout the recording, and during the first act in particular, the show has a lot of quick and experimental cuts in the frame that I feel don’t allow the audience to sit enough with the action and the performance happening onstage, instead making the audience pay more attention to quick facial gestures rather than allowing the audience to take in the performance of an individual actor or an entire scene as a whole. Overall, the editing just reminds me that I am watching this beautifully done live-performance through a screen rather than being there for the performance in person, and lessens the potential impact of the recording as a whole.
Regardless of the editing, Starship still has some of the best character performances and musical numbers in StarKid’s production history. One that really stood out for me during this rewatch was Denise Donovan’s portrayal of February. Her character gets introduced as a classic ditzy character who initially doesn’t have a lot of agency in the story, but through good writing and likable performance, grows into the most sympathetic and dynamic character in the show. Donovan’s performance makes February more human than the trope she represents, and plays off her character so well that her jokes make her more endearing than a throw-away character that’s used just for laughs and a love-interest. Starkid tends to do this with a lot of the trope-y roles that they write for their productions . The writing and the direction have a very unique way of taking seemingly predictable, one-dimensional characters and fleshing them out into entire human beings with backstories and arcs, making their comedic impact all the more enjoyable because the audience genuinely likes them.

no proof other than i would genuinely not be okay if it was a whole DECADE ago. also did you ever explain why you think 2011? totally fine if you didn’t and don’t want to though
Lmao I thought that might be what it was and that’s so fair but... just think about it. 2011 I just think with some of the pictures and stuff from space tour especially but even leakycon they’re like, so in love it’s only reasonable for them to have been together

I was watching leakycon 2011 and I thought joey and lauren already together at that point, but that happened before spacetour. So i guess they already releasing those heart eyes for a long ass time
You know what, after a conversation today I’m really strongly leaning towards them being together during space tour so leakycon 2011 isn’t a stretch

Great vid, thank you!! ♥ I love that so much of it is from geekycon 2015! I never noticed Brian singing "die" instead of "cry" before 😂 What is Lauren signing at 3:20? The clip from I believe 2011 or 2013 leakycon (the clip is too short for me to actually focus on what's being sung 😅). Lauren and Joey are so cute together!
No problem!! Geeky 2015 was a DISASTER and a BLESSING. The dragon song! I did try to leave song context in 😂
