Duolingo alternatives

Duolingo’s been in the news for going all AI. Of course, if AI is your bag, that’s cool. But if you��re interested in learning language from resources made by real native speakers and humans…

Here are some suggestions…

Speaking/Listening

-Innovative Language (known for JapanesePod101, koreanclass101, spanishpod101 and their collection of 30+ language programs - teaches languages through conversations (you listen to a convo between two native speakers and then get it explained). Lessons are about 5–10 min on average in audio/video format https://www.innovativelanguage.com/online-language-courses

Pimsleur - similar approach as above but lessons are longer - 30 min and audio only - https://www.pimsleur.com

Reading

language learning is such a personal thing that there is no “right” or “wrong” way of doing it. it’s whatever works on bringing YOU closer to YOUR goal.

you want to watch tv shows but don’t really care for speaking with others? yay!! no speaking practice needed.

you want to learn quickly for an upcoming trip? yay! text book phrases and simple grammar.

you’re a beginner and it’s been 10 years? 2 weeks? 6 months? it doesn’t matter. as long as you are working towards bringing YOURSELF closer to what YOU want to achieve, you have succeeded: you are succeeding; you are doing great.

i find that so much demotivation comes from comparison and/or trying to follow other's advice too closely. if anki decks don't work for you, that's fine! if duolingo works well for you, then use it!

this language learning thing, it should be enjoyed. in the sea full of deceptive polyglot stories and videos on top of videos attempting to understand how to learn languages in "the fastest way possible" sometimes we should sit back and ask ourselves, "when is just learning things, enough"?

with that i hope you all continue working towards your dreams! whether you want to become a translator or just watch a few more movies in your target language, you can do it. i know you have it in you.

Korean Slang을 좀치네요~

A casual phrase that was been around for a while 

뭐뭐.. “좀 하다”

“Done a bit of this / Dabbled in / Done this a bit in my day”

Simply put, it is a playful way of saying someone has done something quite a bit or is pretty good at something. Which is why it’s generally used with the ~네(요) or 거든(요) grammar endings. 

For example

“야 너 롤 해??”

“Do you play LoL (League of Legends)?”

“응, 나 좀 하지”

“Yeah, I play a bit”

But this has changed from 하다 (To do) to 치다 (To play a sport or instrument) but still can be used in everyday context.

So instead of saying “너 베이킹 잘 하네!”

“You’re pretty good at baking!”

You can say

“와아, 이 빵 잘 구웠네. 너 좀 치네”

“Woah, you baked this bread so well. Guess you’re pretty good at baking”

As always, it’s not a direct translation, but you get the gist of it. 

이제 구독자분들도 한국어를 좀 치시네요~

I haven’t been really active lately but I came across something I wanted to share.

It’s a free language learning app called Lingo Legend, and I’m honestly a bit surprised by how much I’m enjoying it.

It’s basically just a vocab game where you’re a farmhand. The game is split between working on your farm and going on adventures.

You can choose what theme of vocab — though it doesn’t seem to be possible to put in your own — and set the pace you wish to play. There’s a daily energy limit, which you can refill by watching ads but there are no ad interruptions.

Supported languages are:

French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Dutch, German, Italian and Portuguese.

Maybe I’m just late to the party and everyone already knows about it but I rarely see it talked about.

안녕하세요 여러분!

Today, i’ll share how to say the time in Korean! First of all, we have to know how is the structure in korean for this.

TIME(에) + HOURS(에) + MINUTES(에) + SECONDS(에) + 이에요/예요.

Since we already know how to say hours + minutes + seconds, i’ll teach you how to say the time (morning/evening/night)

Morning (from sunrise till noon) = 아침/오전

Afternoon (from noon till nightfall) = 오후

Night (from nightfall to sunrise) = 밤/저년

As you can see, morning and night has two ways to say it, the one i use the most if the first one.

TIME PARTICLE -에.

What is the “에” thing? It’s a time particle that goes with some words (i’ll give you more later!) but not everytime! You have to learn which words goes with this time particle.

Before going further, the 에 must go at the end of the phrases everytime. As you can see in the structure i wrote above, every part has the 에 in parenthesis. You only have to put ONE time particle (에) on the sentence. Let me explain it with examples:

Examples:

TIME(에) + HOURS(에) + MINUTES(에) + SECONDS(에) + 이에요/예

It’s in the afternoon = 오후에 예요.

It’s 9 in the morning = 아침아홉시에 예요.

It’s 10:36 at night = 밤열시삼십육분에 에요.

It’s 5:14:45 in the afternoon = 오후다섯시십사분사십오초에 예요.

As you can see, 에 always falls further behind as we add more information to the sentence. I learned it thinking that they were Russian dolls (Matryoshkas): the more you open them, the smaller they get and the smallest one is where the 에 is.

Once you get it, it will be more easy to form sentences! So, I suggest that you write as many sentences you can with different times, to practice.

Next time, i’ll add more words that goes / doesn’t go with 에, since i don’t want to add a lot at the same time. See you soon!

Random Korean Gen-Z Slangs

1. 래전드 (raejeondeu) – Derived from the English word “legend,” this term is used to describe someone or something that is legendary or incredibly impressive. 

2. 미친 개쩐다 (michin gaejjeonda) – This phrase translates to “crazy awesome” and is used to express that something is extremely cool or amazing. 

3. 열받네 (yeolbatne) – An expression used when someone is frustrated or annoyed, equivalent to saying “I’m so irritated” or “That’s infuriating.” 

4. 구라치지마 (gurachijima) – A warning to “stop lying” or “don’t bullshit,” used when someone suspects that another person is not being truthful. 

5. 감성있네 (gamseonginne) – This phrase means “That’s emotional” or “That has a lot of feelings,” used to describe something that is touching or sentimental. 

6. 농협은행 (nonghyeop eunhaeng) – Literally translating to “Agricultural Cooperative Bank,” this term has humorously become slang for “You are so pretty,” stemming from a misunderstanding where a foreigner’s question about the bank was misinterpreted as a compliment. 

7. 새금 더 내라 (saegeum deo naera) – Originally meaning “Pay more money,” this phrase is humorously used to express jealousy, often in response to someone showing off or having something desirable. 

8. 추구미 (chugumi) – A cute way of saying “I’m cold,” often used in a playful or childish manner. 

9. 느좋 (neujot) – Short for ‘느낌 좋다,’ meaning ‘good vibes.’ You can use it to describe anything that gives you a good feeling. 

10. 코스크 (koseukeu) and 턱스크 (teokseukeu) – These terms refer to wearing a mask incorrectly: ‘코스크’ (koseukeu) describes wearing a mask below the nose, and ‘턱스크’ (teokseukeu) refers to wearing it on the chin.

2. i took a yt video and wrote out some vocab, this is what i took from it and think is useful for me. it’s funny if you look up the meaning of the words but still have a hard time understanding the meaning of the sentence as a whole lol like “ok yeah but what exactly does that mean now?”:

눈치가 없다 (not be able to read the room)

놓치다 (to fail)

사람들 앞에서 점점 더 작아지다 (to become “small” in front of people -> i guess when you’re shy and everyone talking a lot and are confident, and you just “shrink”)

그 마음 저도 겪다 (i went through that feeling…~i felt that way too?)

나는 왜 안 되다 (why am i so unlucky? why do i fail?)

어울리는 게 서툰 사람 vs. 가치가 없는 사람 (clumsy people who get along with?… vs. people who have no worth/value, who think they are worthless?)

부족하다 (insufficient)

착각을 하다 (to delude oneself)

긍정적인 마음을 가지다 (to be positive)

인상깊게 겪었었던 일을 정리하다 (to organize stuff(situations etc) that left a strong impression on you)

익숙해지다 (become familiar with)

혹시 왜 그렇게 생삭하게 되다 (why do i think this way)

내가 한 실수를 되새김하다 (i ruminate on the mistakes i made)

Just a little self check for myself.

Since the beginning of this blog, your girl has been standing on big bizz! Before all of this was in the craziest slacking era i have ever found myself. Now waking up at 5 am to fucking workout and do yoga is becoming a part of my morning routine.

Yes, there are still things i need to improve such as my toxic addiction to TikTok but hey, one problem at a time.

I am super proud of all the little investments i have made that are turning me into the bad bitch i was always born to be.

I will be turning 29 this march and i am so fucking excited for it. I truly thought that it was the end after 25 but the more i grow, the better i look, the more assertive i have become and i am making more money than ever ( even tho i need to improve my saving skills. ).

I wake up everyday and love the woman that i am!

We go through so much as women daily and to still be here, bettering ourselves and get to that bags, I’m so proud of us.

Despite feeling pretty accomplished, i know there is so much more for me to do and be.

So here are few things i personally want to improve for me and things i will do to achieve it:

I want to grow my lash business : giving more hours to lash, posting waaaayy more on ig to promote my business and practice my skills.

Practicing my Korean: i have bought a practice book months ago and now i will finish it, read and writing in kr more.

Do the split: i have been doing a 8min daily of slit stretching. I should be able to do it before the end of December.

I want to weight 67kg by the end of December.

Getting my uniqueness back, i have became blend so i want to be back with my fashionista self Mhkay even got myself two fur coat.

So, this is my check list so far for this year. There are definitely more things that i have to achieve but i have gave myself more time to do so.

Anyyyywayss, i hope we all get what we need and be what we want!

one thing about learning languages is that yes, learning in itself is fun but what’s even greater is the fact that all your other interests and hobbies can be looked at with another shade of light. I personally love philosophy and to be able to read another language’s nuances and concepts and understand it more than you ever could with a translation? incredible.

Life Update: Teaching in Korea!

여러분 안녕하세요! It's been forever since I last posted, but I recently received an ask so I thought I might as well share about what's been going on with me lately! Since March, I have been teaching English at a high school and middle school in Korea! I'm in Andong (안동), which is a city in the North Gyeongsang Province (경상북도), but I live in a pretty rural area of the city. It's definitely been an adjustment from my life in New York City!

So far, I really love my life here! I have dedicated students and my coworkers are very kind and generous. I'm learning so much about being a teacher, about sharing my language with my students, and about myself as I live on my own in a different country. I feel so grateful for this opportunity :)

As for my Korean skills, I think my speaking is for sure lacking compared to when I studied abroad in Seoul. The other teachers that I interact with the most in my school all speak English, and I'm not allowed to speak Korean to my students, so in general I don't have the opportunity to practice very much. But I'm hoping to push myself a little more to find those opportunities!
