I’m not smart or well-read enough to give a ton of examples but after learning that fantasy (as a genre) originated as more of a sci-fi setting with some aesthetic familiarity to the real-life medieval period my patience for people talking about “historical accuracy” ranging from justifying the lack of women and minorities in their settings to bitching about highly-specific nitpicky details of ‘medieval’ clothing and culture (once again, applied to a FANTASY setting) has plummeted to 0%
Yes, you heard that exactly. Fantasy nowadays is its own defined genre, but at its core, ‘fantasy’ as we know it is derived from an essentially classic sci-fi perspective. With all of the uses that people use for sci-fi as well: a creative vessel where someone created a whole alternative world with the means to comment on or criticize our current world.
#the doctor is in#fantasy was never meant to be particularly disconnected from real life or escapist in any way#though id say if you dont carry a surface level understanding of media youd already know that#but learning that the birth of ‘fantasy’ as we know it is pretty undeniably a sci-fi it kind of blew my mind and make a lot of stuff click

I got done making my christmas presents so i started cooking up some og stuff for kicks. Then i got handed some MORE presents to make up so this thing has to go in the slow cooker for a bit to slowly drive me insane.
i want to do a whole little intro comic for this dude but, alas, that will have to wait. for now have this wip of my beloved farm hand (named Mer, They/It) who's exceptionally shitty at their job but loves doing it anyways.
#oc#oc Mer#my doodles#It's from this sci-fi/fantasy setting#with a dystopian flair to it i suppose#i'm not entirely sure what's going on with the whole world yet#they're kind of based off a dream i had#so adapting that to something coherent is an interesting challenge#i have a different picture of them done#but it's from before they were a farm hand#and i kinda want to introduce farm hand Mer first#Anyways!#that's it#i have to go back to crocheting now#the pattern i just got calls for a Foundation stitch#which i have yet to learn#so off to youtube i go!#i'm not at all upset about the new projects btw#i know it may sound it#but my mom's getting very stressed about doing them herself#and i offered to help her#so i'm just glad she took me up on that offer#it's just slightly inconvenient timing

Pathfinders in Space (ABC, 1960)
"Now, the remainder of us have fifteen hours of oxygen left. That leaves fifteen hours in which to complete our research here."
"Well, what's the good of all that if you can't come back with it?"
"The moon never destroys her treasures, Henderson. We shall leave a record and it'll be preserved in the vacuum of the caves. And the future expeditions you mentioned, they will find it."
#pathfinders in space#1960#children's television#classic tv#abc#malcolm hulke#eric paice#guy verney#peter williams#gerald flood#harold goldblatt#richard dean#gillian ferguson#stewart guidotti#pamela barney#irene sutcliffe#hugh evans#astor sklair#michael guest#the first sequel to the seminal (and sadly entirely lost) serial Target Luna; for reasons best known to the production team‚ despite being#a direct sequel with the same characters‚ every major role was recast for Pathfinders (and so sadly we don't get to see a young Michael#Craze). often described as a precursor to DW‚ and honestly that's hard to deny: this might be the first uk kids sci fi serial to really#nail that family friendly vibe‚ with enough interest for both children and adult viewers alike. it's a rare gift that it exists complete#and finally getting to it i found it a genuinely compelling series. it can be a little cheesy and a little silly in places (adorably‚ our#astronauts take a full tea service to the moon and regularly stop for tea) but i actually ended up learning some stuff about the moon from#this 64 yr old series. Gerald Flood's everyman journalist is a nicely constructed audience avatar but it's missing cheese expert Peter#Williams who gives the orders (and regularly imperils his own children). a lot of fun! well worth seeking out for old tv fans#also needless to say the various miniatures and fx work is frankly adorable.#and shoutout to Prof Mary Meadows‚ it's nice to have a kickass lady scientist in a show this old (and who remains cooler and more capable#than her male counterparts on more than one occasion).

Bioluminescent cave-bun-creatures! Some preliminary concept sketches I threw together and prettied up in Clip Studio back in August, both to push my creature design skills and as a bit of a tailored portfolio piece.
I plan to draw more of them eventually, and already have some modifications in mind. (Ex: making their feets more dextrous and less blunted.)
Also inspired partly by the absolutely amazing work of @ / jayrockin! If you haven't seen their work before and enjoy speculative biology or sci-fi worldbuilding, you should absolutely go give 'em a look.
Note transcripts below cut!
From left to right, top to bottom:
Subterranean Earth fauna are largely blind...but in a different world, wildlife could use bioluminescence instead, like earth deepsea creatures.
Cartiliginous fans with large bioluminescent "eyes"; these act as both a distraction and an intimidation tactic (caterpillar style ;D)
Fans regrow easily and are designed to be lost. They can also be angled or waved, -> and folded backward to accommodate tight spaces.
Tapetum lucidum [in eyes], to take advantage of other organisms' bioluminescence.
Neck can turn 180 degrees, like owls
Insectivore
Small teeth, but sharp; resemble possum teeth
Paw pads are "sticky", in the same way as gecko's; this is mostly for traction, though, and can't facilitate hardcore climbing
Claws assist with traction in slippery cave environs
Conflicts are brutal - fights for territory or mating rights focus on damaging the fans, as without them an individual's chances of survival decrease
Behavior overall is reclusive, but dauntless.
While they rely heavily on their fans first, when push comes to shove, they have a reputation for being recklessly bold.
#speculative biology#animals#cave animals#design#sketchbook tag#...still hoping that studio will have another opening someday >u>#learning about the term specbio was wild bc it's like. oh. is that the name for it?#I usually do more fantasy-oriented worldbuilding - think monster hunter or even flight rising a bit#maybe you'd call it “soft” specbio?#where it kinda builds deliberately from real concepts and elements and aims for a sort of 'groundedness' like sci-fi#but takes it in a fantasy direction instead#so idk if that's the proper term for it or not buuut either way leaning into harder sci-fi for a bit was so much fun c:#and so is discovering new interests!

also no offense but a lot of the time you can really easily tell when an IHNMAIMS fan knows nothing about harlan ellison or his other work
#not jojo related#rambles#it reminds me most people aside from sci-fi geeks do not recognize his name#i'm not going to go out and encourage people to be ellison fans per se (he was really not a good guy. where do i start.) but#you do gain some extra context learning a bit about his life and personality when you read his work#when he was a more popular figure his... personality was what he was known for almost as much as his work was#his other writer friends often took inspiration from his personality and wrote parodies of him/characters based off of him#that's the kind of guy he was#i feel like a lot if not most IHNMAIMS fans on here are mainly just attracted to AM and to me some of their posts are kind of terrifying#i think... a lot of you are really kinda just into harlan ellison without realizing it#i joke about the computersona shit but for real AM's game personality and harlan's were nooot all that far off#and the posts i've seen that are just like. compilations of harlan making noises while playing AM... oh my god.#you do you though no hate. to be clear

i basically exclusively read sci-fi nowadays mostly bc i like reading sci-fi and nonfiction but college has sapped my energy for nonfiction as entertainment. i have to read so many papers and articles all the time. and every time i'm like wow i could read this 400 pg book about mushrooms there's a voice in the back of my head going 'or you could read something actually relevant to your education' but then i don't
#i dont know with my job that this will ever change and so i do want to get back into (optional) nonfiction#as i do miss it#it's just a bigger energy commitment when my 'joy from learning new things' meter is pretty maxed out at all times from mandatory stuff#sci-fi is filling a hole in my life that has already been filled for nonfiction. u know.

weekend melancholy is starting to kick in >~<
#im gonna go and do my food shop etc to keep myself busy and hopefully my 2nd meds will kick in and we'll be able to handle it together#i think i kind of do this so regularly bc my brain is just processing everything bc i dont rly have time during the week#all cool tho im doing good overall def on the up n i feel way more capable of coping emotionally which is nice. i <3 meds#also.. possibly settling on the idea that i might be agender. very tentatively. lots of experiences n thoughts coming together rn#ive been reacting in unexpected ways to a lot of gendered shit atm which has made me reconsider the way i think abt myself#but very difficult to articulate it to myself let alone anyone else. so ive been sitting with it for now until it precipitates#gender stuff has never rly affected me much or ive never been in a place to explore it which is why i havent thought abt it super hard#but im not the sort of person who needs a lot of internal exploration to figure out my identity like im v self aware tbh#and while im wildly indecisive abt most things in my life for some reason i never have been abt stuff like this. i learned abt lesbianism#like idk 9 years ago-ish and straight away was like yeah that makes sense for me. never looked back since#n similarly ive experienced forms of gender dysphoria before n just immediately dealt with it symptomatically n moved on#its never been smth to agonise abt for me like i know what makes me comfortable in my skin so theres no question abt doing it#and ik im privileged to be able to do that. and also it helps that gender for me is mostly divorced from external perceptions#+ that im v autistic so social pressures dont stick to me very well. i mean yeah i was bullied for it as a kid but i was stubborn asf#so yeah from the moment i realised i was genuinely uncomfortable/upset abt it earlier this week i was like okay. lets try this instead#its given me pretty instant relief from any distress i was feeling so far which is nice. rare respite from one of my torture labyrinths#just testing out internally whether it frames things more clearly n makes me feel more myself/at peace before i choose to stick w the idea#but not gonna do a whole coming out fanfare either way. dont think i wanna change how ppl interact w me + im still a dyke#so i dont consider it relevant to anyone else unless they share a similar understanding of gender to me. or if we're v close#ill prolly broach it w other trans friends eventually bc insert philosophers talking image. but to everyone else its business as usual#happy to play my cis-sona at work. + w new queer ppl i meet ive been introducing myself recently w mirrored pronouns instead of any/all#and i think i prefer that. virtually indistinguishable but theres smth nice abt inviting ppl to recognise me the way they do themselves#like translating + localising a non-gendered language into a gendered one... simplifying decisions abt how to perceive me#and ofc ppl are still gonna perceive me however but idc much unless we're actually friends. the rest is all a performance anyway#doubtful anyone on here ever has reason to refer to me but if u do for some reason... im freeloading off ur pronouns now btw <3#but yeahhh. much 2 think abt. i need to read more alien/ai sci fi.. non-human sentience has been such a comforting concept lately#but yea tldr i woke up one morning this week like damn im prolly agender but i have a full time job to go to rn so idc abt that#.diaries#okkkk my dex is kicking in im no longer on the verge of tears lets go get these groceries wooohoooo

speculative bio is absolutely NOT my wheelhouse which is why alamanni is the way it is for the most part but i want to lean a bit into that for drakes bc they are the only sentient species with absolutely no eldritch / thulite meddling in their biology
#just learned that amphibians are incredibly susceptible to salt water bc of how porous their skin is+the lack of a strong enough--#--filtration system. kind of jacks with my idea of ve-corpsis being a largely coastal society LOL#also learned the term 'sophont'- originates from old sci fi and is used to refer to sentient species- and rlly like it. mmmmmight ape on--#--it a bit to Finally get a proper term for all the earthly alamanni guys

researching automatons for a d&d thing and wow it truly is something how the human inabilitiy to emotionally distinguish real from fiction/artificial shaped the way we create. We've really always have been obsessed with making guys out of inorganic materials huh
#humanity.txt#humanity#sci-fi#also i learned the 'emotionally indistinguishable' thing from my former phenomenologist therapist if anyone should know

something that really grinds my gears as I venture into other writing/bookish spaces is the fact that people have to apologize when stating their opinions/personal preferences when it comes to what they read or consume for fear of offending The Majority. Like there's this sudden hyper-defensive stance that fans or certain groups of people take about what they love and if someone else god forbid states (on their OWN account or a comment thread mind you, with others who agree with them) that they prefer not to consume those things or they don't love it as much as those people do then these people suddenly feel attacked??
Like. Imagine me obsessing over a show that I've binged a million times and then someone across the globe whispers the words "eh I don't really like that show, it feels overhyped and I don't get why people like it. I prefer this other show to that' and I DIVE ACROSS THE OCEAN to be like 'You're entitled to like that other show, but I don't get why you have to put down my show that I love so much in order to say that. Like that's just very rude of you to even verbalize that opinion in your own space of living and existing that's nowhere near my space of living and existing.'
Like??? People?? Do we not see how mad that is?? THAT'S what's happening in the book community rn and we're treating that like it's normal, I don't know. I get that people can cross a line when stating an opinion or make generalizations about people who consume certain things, but...I don't need someone else's validation to love what I love? If they don't like it or think I'm weird or whatever for liking it that's their problem (and their opinion)??? It doesn't say anything about me or change how I feel about the things I like? And if I'm around people who are bashing what I enjoy and I don't want to see that then maybe just...click away? delete their comment? click unfollow? follow more people who like what you love to drown it out? idk. People are entitled to not like what you love, that's what makes us all beautifully diverse. idk.
#inkoverted thoughts#maybe my first mistake was leaving Tumblr to look at other bookish/writing communities#and this wasn't even TikTok which I refuse to touch with a ten foot pole#but I just watched a YT video of a girl talking about things she hates in Web comics and it was obviously said with goodnatured humor#but she still apologized or had to clarify that like these are just her opinions and she's not bashing people who enjoy these things#and someone in the comments was like I hate that she had to do that bc people can't take a joke or respect others' opinions#and I didn't even clock it when I watched the video but I was like yeah you're right...#and then I go on Insta and I see an author being like#'in a time when spicy romantasy books are being obsessed over...I'm writing “clean” sci-fi slow burn romance#and most people in the comments were like 'yes thank you I appreciate you adding some variety to the bookish community'#or 'there are diverse readers who like all types of genres its only that the romance readers are the loudest and dominating social media'#which is a separate thing that I do think is a valid point#but then a reader from the genre that's being pushed as The Majority came into the chat like#'good for you for writing a sci-fi slow burn - that sounds interesting but you don't have to put down other books when you say that'#and I'm just blinking at the comment like 😃#whooooo? where did OP put down other books???#all they did was say they're going against the grain and writing something less popular amongst the online book community#please learn reading comprehension#and fifth of all - if this upsets you why did you feel the need to click on it and comment like???#go back to your spicy romantasy community and talk to them I don't???? what do you gain from being in this comment thread??#I'm getting frustrated for no reason but it's just so mad to me that people have to walk on eggshells now to share what they like and don't#ON THIER OWN ACCOUNTS#mad#absolutely MAD#there was a separate debate that came up about the fact that people using “clean” to describe non-smut stories implies smut is dirty#which I didn't even think that and I don't even think that's what people meant to imply when using that term#it's the same way you would use the word “clean” to describe something PG vs something rated R or M in my opinion#but that's a whole other thing I'm not gonna get into#if you want a reason to be mad 24/7 then how about getting offline and looking at what's going on in the world? 😀#better use of your anger I can *promise* you

So I was trying to remember stuff about Battlestar Galactica because I haven’t seen it since I was like 15 and most of what I remember from the episodes are the pilot (which we just rewatched and I’ve seen several times), the Fire in Space episode because I thought it was cool (?!?) and that episode where Apollo gets sent to Terra in disguise to try and prevent a nuclear war or something.
Anyway I was thinking about that last one and trying to remember how Apollo ended up disguised and on Terra in the first place and accidentally unlocked a core memory of the show which was THIS WEIRD THING:

the FUDGE was this thing and what were these people on about. why weren’t they more helpful. why does their ship look Like That. why is it glowing?! why did they keep kidnapping people?!
#battlestar galactica#original battlestar galactica#sci fi#weird glowy spiky ship thing#I think we learned a little bit about these guys but I can't remember what their deal was#if they were from the future or just angelic beings or what#weren't they noncorporeal?#anyway can't wait to remember more about this weirdness xD#I also remember bits of the last episode because I LOVED it#me talking about this show as if anyone cares#but it's tumblr so that's normal xD
