I'm not going to do anything about the year by year breakdowns because that's possibly too much data for a tumblr post and I'm already tired, but lets review these 22 shows (The Knockout (2023) is listed twice between the two lists and I counted Joy of Life 1 and Joy of Life 2 as the same show because well, they're different seasons of the same show).

Of the 22 shows most popular shows of the past 10 or so years, 12 are female led, 10 are male led. The female led ones are largely focused on romance, the male led ones that aren't romances larely appear to be things like "Communist Party Biopic" and "police procedurals" which I don't watch. And now, obviously, I have not watched all of these shows to determine their female side character : male side character screen time ratios or anything like that, and these obviously are #NotTheShows that fandom likes to fandom over - The Untamed clocks in at #5 most viewed show of 2019, behind shows such as The Story of Minglan and Go Go Squid, and Word of Honor did not crack the top ten for 2021 coming in behind shows such as Duoluo Continent, My Heroic Husband, and Rattan.

But I do think that like, maybe our choices on what to be fannish about says something about the situation, at least here in my small corner of cdrama fandom. And maybe we shouldn't say that there's no shows with cool enough women for us to fandom over. You're just not watching them.

My major problem with people going: "the reason slash outweighs het or femslash is because our media is largely written by men who don't give their female characters enough depth!!!" Is like.

Okay but have you considered reading things written by women then. Or about women then. Like just in the cdrama scene: everyone is going agog about the danmei of it all and "omg I can't ship het or femslash because there's not enough women who are cool enough!" but ??? There's plenty of female character led shows. Where's the rabid fandom for my favorite female character led shows? Why do shows like Ruyi and Yanxi and Minglan (which came out round the same time as The Untamed) have like 0 fandom by comparison? Is the appeal of a show with 95% women not appealing?

So, I know LoC is a wuxia/xianxia. But is it a largely more serious one like e.g., Return of Condor Heroes or a goofy one like the Chinese Palladin series or Ancient Sword? Because I adore the former but not necessarily the latter.
