ok I’m lazy and don’t want to comb through the books to try and figure this out so: why did Beatrice kill Olaf’s parents? and did that happen before or after the sugar bowl was stolen? sorry i just can’t remember 😔 thank you
Well I’m glad you didn’t take the time to look through the books bc you wouldn’t have found an answer!
Here’s a @snicketsleuth theory on why Olaf’s parents were assassinated
And here’s a timeline of events also from snicketsleuth. Though I don’t think this timeline includes when the sugar bowl was stolen
Snicketsleuth is a good resource in general for book questions. Also @lemonysnidget . Neither are particularly active anymore but they’ve got lots of posts to search through!

Book canon: asoue takes places withdin a year ? IF so. .. IF is posible for olaf to be Bea II father?
I’ve talked about it over on lemonysnidget, but the series takes place over about half a year. Kit was already pregnant at the start of the series, and may have even started her second trimester before the day at Briny Beach. There are at least ten weeks of Kit’s pregnancy that take place before the series starts.
In terms of timing, yeah, Olaf definitely wasn’t on the run, chasing the Baudelaires, or even acting as their guardian when Beatrice was conceived. We don’t really know what Olaf was doing in the months leading up to TBB. Having a relationship fall apart is a possibility. So is rekindling an old flame only to have things blow up again.
Really, there is nothing in the timeline that prevents Olaf from being Beatrice’s father, unless there was a reference to him getting a vasectomy somewhere that I haven’t heard about (and even then, those don’t always take and can wind up with surprises, so don’t @ me anyone who wants to get technical).
I also think it’s really important to mention how critical the ambiguity of Beatrice’s paternity is to the overall series. For the Baudelaires, them not knowing but not caring is vital to showing that the cycle has been broken.
But, as Kit’s only canon romantic involvement is with Olaf, he’s actually really the only contender. Dewey loved Kit, or so Lemony thinks, but there isn’t strong evidence that they were ever in a position to have a kid. Since Kit is about to become a single mother and Dewey is totally willing to adopt the Baudelaires, it feels like a reasonable conclusion that Dewey is not the father of Kit’s child since he doesn’t balk from the idea of becoming a father and is cool with taking on two teenagers and a toddler. If he were Beatrice’s father, Kit wouldn’t be doing things like picking out her baby’s wallpaper while Dewey lived at the hotel. That’s just not consistent with his characterization in the book.

So in recent ask I saw you say that Bea II was Olaf’s daughter. I’m not attacking you I just want to know why you believe that.
First of all, I should restate that my portrayal of Olaf is based on books. I add some detail from the Netflix show, but as for the main chain of events – I stick to books. That being said, I do believe Beatrice to be Olaf’s daughter in the books.
This theory has been discussed a lot and I will include links to a few great posts on the subject. They are very sufficient, but I still want to express my own thoughts.
I guess, I should begin with explaining why I think it was possible for Kit and Olaf to have a child in the first place. Obviously enough, in the famous paralleled passage about true love they mean each other: Netflix knew perfectly well what they did there when they added Dewey, since the things both Kit and Olaf mentioned were lined up in a chronological order, and that indicates that Kit had lost her true love before her brothers, which means it wasn’t Dewey, and Olaf had lost his before his henchpeople, which means it wasn’t Esmé. These two loved each other till the end, no matter how dark and complicated it was.
Besides, unlike Netflix version of Kit, book Kit wasn’t that excited about motherhood (and god, I could talk about how Netflix ruined one of my favorite characters a lot, but that’s not the matter here). She took unnecessary risks, she was going to choose the wallpaper for the baby’s room on her own, etc. And yeah. The whole Kit/Dewey thing. It’s very subtle. We know he loved her, we also know they worked together and were rather close, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t find any proof that Kit loved him back romantically, especially enough to have sex with him.
The next point might seem like a stretch, but I do get some kind of Romeo & Juliette vibes from these two. Two rival sides, two unfortunate lovers, he also killed her brother, that kind of stuff, though it’s hardly romantic and very dark. While the death of Romeo and Juliette puts the end to the rivalry of their families, death means nothing to V.F.D. – but Kit and Olaf’s child is exactly what could finally break the cycle of abuse.
The Baudelaires raising Dewey’s daughter makes no sense in the context of the whole story. But them raising the child of the man who turned their lives into hell, however, surrounding her with love and care… You get the idea. It’s a great character development for them, since it shows they’ve managed to overcome their trauma.
Also, think of the irony. Olaf didn’t want kids, he chose that particular poem as his last words for a reason – maybe he knew, maybe he didn’t, but still, there she was, his child, someone who didn’t have to be fucked up by her mom and dad. Someone who could grow up to be noble instead of becoming a copy of her father.
Beatrice being Dewey’s daughter is sweet and nice, though rather obvious, and we all know that things aren’t always what they seem and rarely go the right way.
Beatrice being Olaf’s daughter makes her a perfect embodiment of the whole Chef’s Salad thing. Her mother was a not so noble volunteer, her father was a villain – good and evil are literally mixed in her.
This is actually one of my favorite topics to discuss about the series and I have a lot more to say, but this post has already got too long, and besides, as I said before, there are a lot of metas and analyses on tumblr already, so I’ll just give you the links to this amazing meta by @lemonysnidget and also this post that I reblogged not so long ago.

This is a thank you to the amazing ASOUE fandom (no, I don't have a better title)
It's been a while since I wanted to make a post like this one, I'm finally taking the time.
For months, I've been scrolling the asoue tag every day and following people who put their hearts in their posts. And I want to thank these people because you're the ones making the fandom feel like home.
This is a perfectly subjective and non-exhaustive thank you list and I'm so sorry if I forgot to mention you!
@unfortunate-stranger-losers for her amazingly funny Six Baudelaires AU and for the streaming of seasons 1 and 2 in december (she deserves an award for doing Sunny's voice)
@esmesqualor I've followed her on three different user names, she makes the most beautiful gifs ever and has an Esmé obsession we quite well understand
@flaviamarquesart for her tags which are always incredible (seriously, go read them) and her fanart which is just gorgeous!!!
@penultimatesugarbowl in one word: Beatrice. In three: VFD old generation. She posts about really interesting headcanons and I slowly became addicted to it (you know how it happens)
@lemonysnidget OMG I don't even have the words. You want to read serious theories, meta and headcanons? There you go! It's quality work and writing, it's so interesting, you'll love it!
And if you're just looking for great asoue blogs posting about many aspects: @countolaf @last-quiet-place @atwq @alfuncoots @unfortunatetv @667darkavenue @firestarter-olaf @sunnybauds @conundrum-esoterica @lettersforbeatrice @knight-of-vfd @isdoraquagmire @virtualfindingsdocumented
I'm sure I'm forgetting some of you right now so feel free to complete the list yourself!

I’ve really been enjoying some of @lemonysnidget‘s recent posts about a third side of the schism, but I’m having trouble processing long text posts tonight so I’m making my own post instead of responding via reblog. I’m using bullet points to give myself permission not to organize my thoughts in any way 👍
in response to this post
“VFD has a tendency to lay claim to people who weren’t members, calling them associates retroactively” kind of thematically overlaps with one of the main thoughts I had wrt to this theory.
While firestarters (especially Olaf, to a frightening and confusing extent) continue to plaster the VFD eye everywhere, they generally don’t seem to cling to VFD’s history or slogans for legitimacy.
Volunteers seem very concerned with the idea of legitimacy, tradition, and heritage. They admit that the firestarters arose from a “schism”, but constantly talk about firestarters and volunteers as though volunteers inherited the fight against firestarters from the old VFD.
I think if volunteers weren’t forced to acknowledge the schism due to the facts that firestarters know their codes and bases and have the VFD tattoo, then the volunteers would happily pretend that there was never a schism and the firestarters were always external enemies
Which is to finally get to my point: I think in any further sub-schisms within the volunteer side, everyone involved would be convinced that they are “the real VFD” and that they are pursuing the “real” ideals and that only they understand the true meaning of “the world is quiet here”
Even Dewey who seems to be speaking critically about the VFD “recruitment” process describes himself as bringing back some idealized “real” VFD that he imagines existed in the past
Which in turn would make it EXTREMELY difficult to identify when and where that schism arose and which side everyone is on, because they’re not going to say “I’m part of bla bla bla faction”, they’re just gonna say “I’m a noble volunteer!”
Further adding to the confusion - VFD is very scattered and decentralized and no one knows who is on whose side, so there are DEFINITELY volunteers who don’t actually know who they’re reporting to or why they’re doing what they’re doing... look at how the Heimlich Hospital is a total dead end for information. I’m convinced that there are volunteers who are out there diligently investigating and returning their information to dead drops, never seeing any results or updated instructions, not knowing if their work is being read by the “wrong” side of the schism or maybe by no one at all. If there were a sub-schism, many volunteers would be completely unable to realize it was happening or figure out which side they were actually working for.
Which is why I question whether Lemony would even know such a secondary schism was happening. He was on the run, wasn’t supposed to be contacting his closest friends and family, seems to have only been breaking that rule for occasional letters to Beatrice or Kit... if he did know, though, I wonder if he chose to attempt to contact Kit but seemingly not Jacques because of which side they were on.
(although Lemony not contacting Jacques could simply be because Jacques thought Lemony shouldn’t be contacting anyone and told him to go dark)
Jacques seems to have definitely not been on Dewey’s hypothetical side, because he seems to support VFD’s secrecy and defends VFD’s recruitment practices to the point of rewriting history (we get permission, they let us finish our tea). I’ve always thought Jacques was trying to find the Baudelaires so they could be witnesses for the trial and/or add their testimony to the sub-sub-library, but maybe I was wrong?
It would be very darkly funny if Jacques defended VFD’s monstrous recruitment practices and Dewey hoped to put an end to them, but Jacques wanted to actually find the Baudelaires to help them while Dewey was putting off helping the Baudelaires because he believed the sub-sub-library and the trial were more important. (But Jacques was definitely investigating to some extent because he was sticking around places the Baudelaires had already been, putting together what had happened to them... he didn’t need to do that to find them.)
interesting ideas about the Baudelaire parents... they still seemed to be connected to VFD even while trying to keep their kids away from it, because Bertrand had the Verdant Flammable Devices and Beatrice read Anna Karenina (which was assigned VFD reading)
in response to this post
“the public library model of VFD applies more to the research, knowledge, and information that VFD gains through its work” okay, that interpretation makes a ton of sense
something so significant I’m gonna put it in bold so it’ll stand out in this awful text wall: Dewey says “Anyone could join us and have access to all of the information we’d acquired” implying he may still want info to be for volunteers, not the general public. Anyone, but not everyone. Still much more open and less secretive than VFD’s current form, but it still sets VFD above and apart as a special intellectual elite.
If you assume Beatrice was actively working towards revealing to the world what she had done at the opera, then her keeping the La forza del destino poster as a souvenir is psychologically fascinating. I mean it already was but still.
yeah Dewey’s blushing is a really interesting reaction... there’s a lot of possible interpretations. I guess tentatively, I would read that as competitiveness and a sense of superiority butting up against compassion and a better-adjusted moral compass than most of VFD has. He can’t hold on to the satisfaction of a mission having been completed and of knowing a special secret when he’s forced to acknowledge how it would hurt the Baudelaires to hear the full story. He hasn’t told them yet, but just being threatened with the idea makes him see his own (and Beatrice’s and Bertrand’s and Kit’s) actions through their eyes.
It could definitely also be embarrassment that he was intending to keep that secret... I can pretty readily see that as another possible interpretation.
also those are very sweet things to say! thank you, right back at you!

Not the anon whose ask you just answered, but I’d also be very interested in your vent about Kit’s portrayal - I find Netflix portrayal and fandom portrayal equally as interesting, so you’d make me very happy if you wrote about both :)
I’m not gonna promise essay length ( @lemonysnidget has a good essay on Netflix!kit if you’re interested. https://lemonysnidget.tumblr.com/post/178390400414/from-kit-snicket-to-sex-kitten/amp
It says pretty much everything I think but in far more detail.) but I’ll whip up something!

My fellow associates - villains and volunteers,
I will be using the following tags after watching ASOUE season three for two weeks (until January 14th) across all of my accounts (huffleporg, @veryfalsedictations, @aseriesofarresteddevelopments, @lemonysnidget):
“asoue spoilers” - all posts even just “!!!” will have this tag
“asoue netflix critical” - for anything that’s net south of positive
“asoue liveblog”
Please blacklist or block those tags if you wish to avoid spoilers.
I will probably be watching over the course of the next 48 hours, since I’ll have family obligations.
Peace.

So op ur really just gonna gloss over where he undressed her and prepared her for surgery without her consent and talked about having a “wedding night” with her huh.
@lemonysnidget made an excellent point about how Handler specifically drew inspiration from the book Lolita— a book he’s cited before as a masterpiece (I’m inclined to agree)— to formulate Count Olaf’s character. And ur really just gonna ignore that too huh.
Seems like you’re only making a single point against something you can easily refute. Without looking at the entire text, you may have a point, but elements of a text can not be isolated to learn their meaning.
EDIT: also, would like to point out how in your original post, you’re actively encouraging others to take your stance— as in saying “your opinion about this character is wrong”.
I don’t know about you. But that doesn’t exactly sound like “if you wanna view Olaf as a pedo go off”
right yall i am SICK and TIRED OF THIS
COUNT OLAF IS NOT A PEDOPHILE
„oh but he tried to marry violet in tbb—” YEAH DONT YOU BE GIVING ME THAT YOU RIDICULOUS OAF
HE TRIED TO MARRY HER BECAUSE HE WANTED HER FORTUNE. HE DID NOT FEEL ANY ATTRACTION TO HER WHATSOEVER.
