scanning a book, but especially an out-of-print, rare book, and uploading it to library genesis is the best feeling ever... and an even greater feeling is publishing your own book and uploading it to library genesis (which I did and am proud of).
librarians and archivists under socialism will perform even greater roles of human emancipation, knowledge creation and preservation because they will be freed from copyrights and intellectual property rights in how they preserve and distribute knowledge.
before some idiot says 'but what about artists and authors losing income!?!?!' yea, you're talking about this through the lens and realities of capitalism, in which artists have to sell their art to survive. socialism and communism aim to meet all the material and cultural needs of their people regardless of class (which will wither away), so that each can be their best selves. artists will not need to survive off of selling art under socialism. they will materially supported by a state that creates material super-abundance and universal material safety for all. it is capitalism that reduces artists to profit off of their labour of art in order to survive. art under socialism will be unprecedented and ever deeper expressions of human consciousness, free from being chained to intellectual property, profit-motive and inaccessibility, paywalls and as a means to earn a bit extra money to support a self structurally reduced to poverty under capitalism.
anyway have a good day. read a book if you can. scan a book if you will. :)

In the wake of the recent attack on Library Genesis I feel inclined to let everyone know that book piracy is foundational to public education in Costa Rica, specially in university levels
Almost all reading material for UCR students are photocopies, or more recently PDF scans, of books made without permission of the original author; one of the top universities in Latin America endorses book piracy

one of the many things i love about Library Genesis is that people will go to the trouble of illegally uploading whole books in the interest of free and equal access to knowledge but will not bother to spell the name of the book correctly

August 2023
(Kathrin Passig)

Edit: Now that the blaze went through DEFINETLY do not upload banned books to places like library genesis or z lib or torrenting sites where they can be acessed... Do not install calibre and use it to break drm (won't work on books from some store fronts). And DEFINETLY don't donate to sites like scihub where you can read scientific studies for free. Scihub is what the kind of site I meant when talking about taking donation in crypto.
I'm a jackass and forgot some tags before posting this and can't change it because there's a tumblr blaze pending so this is just a self reblog to add more tags.
A few years ago I had a phase of being REALLY into digital privacy, using tor, duckduckgo, etc before suffering some burnout because I was trying to be 100% secure. So I'm by no means a expert I'm just relaying experience.
The culture of a lot of left leaning and "fandommy" sites (tumblr, twitter, etc) tends to fear/dislike (or just not know about) a lot of the IT stuff used by people into online privacy because they asscoiate it with "techbros". ESPECIALLY anything even remotely involving cryptocurrency. But if Trump is going to start censoring things and making morning after pills harder to get now might be a VERY good time for Americans to get into online privacy and how to avoid being tracked as well as avoiding censorship. Perhaps even some crypto to buy things discretly (or perhaps if ICE agents start caring about cash?) and because many activists groups also take donations in crypto. Never dealt with crypto myself but from what I know Monero was designed to be more untracable than Bitcoin. Don't know how succesfull that is though. Definetly get into privacy in general though.
I'll leave some useful links to get started. Words of advice:
Don't install a fuckton of privacy extensions on your browser, your unique combination of extensions will give your browser a unique fingerprint. Instead read up on and pick a few commonly used ones.
The BIGGEST annoyance for me was acedemic/proffesional settings because noone wants to switch over to some software they never heard off for one group project. Personally I use some normie software for exclusivly proffesional purposes with NO other information on me and do my actual browsing/leisure computer use more privatly.
https://www.privacytools.io/os: General software/browser/etc recomendations.
https://coveryourtracks.eff.org/: Test how private your browser is.
https://www.torproject.org/: THE gold standard for privacy focused browsers. Also obscures ip. Might not always be practical. Has the disadvantage of being notoriously slow and is blocked by some services/websites to avoid people bypassing ip bans and whatnot. Probably don't use this as your everyday browser but if you ever need to look up anything without censorship use tor.
https://tails.net/: Install a portable mini operating system on a usb stick to browse privately from any computer.
https://www.eff.org/ Electronic frontier foundations website.
https://mastodon.social/explore Don't have experience with it myself. But open source social media that should be much harder to censor.
Tumblr probably won't like me talking too directly about this because of ties to piracy but for people interested in banned books https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_library should be an interesting read...

I now have the words to talk about this authors who cry about book piracy:
Wanting to make a living out of writing is like wanting to make a living out of being a YouTuber; it's not gonna happen, so you gotta get a job and stop killing internet databases

Also, for free pirated non-custom textbooks, always check Library Genesis before paying hundreds of dollars to scammers (textbook companies). That's how I'm getting my philosophy textbook that would have normally cost me $100. To make sure you get the right edition, copy paste the isbn from the school bookstore website or get it from your syllabus!
SNHU US History Custom Textbook
I just ordered the stupid fucking custom textbook for the upcoming Undergrad course US history II: 1865 to present. I don't know who the instructor is yet, but if you happen to need the textbook, I'm going to try to upload the pdf into my google drive and post the link in a reblog of this post so that y'all don't have to pay 60 American Dollars for a book you'll use for 8 fucking weeks.
