Joan is the second to oldest sibling of the Rizzo family, growing up with her oldest brother Phillip and younger siblings Bianca and Amelia. Joan learned how to hold her own in her family and not let herself get pushed around by her older brother and struggled not to bump heads with her younger sister Bianca. As for the youngest Rizzo sibling, Joan always felt a strong protectiveness over her. Not as quick or sharp as the other siblings, Joan took on the role as a sort of second mother to her youngest of sisters. Joan struggled to move when the time came for her to go off on her own, but promised to visit her youngest sister often. Now, being the owner of a popular Italian restaurant Joan is unable to hold true to this promise but tries to make up for this with letters and video chats.
