"A visit made by my mother and myself to my uncle Sergei when he was in camp left very pleasant memories in my mind. The manceuvres were in progress, and the troops were quartered in a village. The choir of my uncle’s battery sang Russian soldier-songs and folk-songs which were mostly in a melancholy minor key and so closely expressed the spirit of the Russian people. To suffer, suffer, and go on suffering—that seems to be the fate of this good-natured pious people. At sunset the retreat was sounded, and a tattoo accompanied the evening prayer. The finest military displays at which I have been present were two parades in the camp at Krasnoe Selo, one of which was held in honour of the Shah of Persia.On the preceding evening we went to the camp in the imperial train with the whole of the Tsar’s family, and then we passed in a ceremonial procession along the lanes of the camp—the Tsarina with us and the Grand Duchesses in carriages harnessed a la Daumont, and the Tsar with the Grand Dukes on horseback. The troops, consisting of the Guard and regiments from the interior of Russia, were drawn up in double line, and as the Tsar approached broke into repeated long-drawn cheers, which, compared with our short military “ Hurrah ! ”, produced a melancholy, wailing effect.

A tent had been pitched on rising ground beyond the camp. There we alighted, and listened to a military concert which now began, while the officers were presented. to Their Majesties, and regimental reports and announcements were made. The scene presented by the assembled company was an extremely gay one: the men all in their brilliant uniforms, the ladies in white or lightcoloured dresses with the large picture-hats which were then the fashion, and carrying beautiful lace sunshades. Just before sunset the ceremonial evening tattoo sounded and the evening service was recited, just as I had heard it on board ship.

In the evening there was a performance in the little camp theatre in which the imperial corps de ballet and dramatic company from Petersburg took part. Next morning we drove out to the parade on the great paradeground where the troops drilled in the summer. All the ladies, with the exception of the two Tsarinas, had seats in a gigantic tent from which the whole ground could be seen. The regiments were already lined up for the parade. First the Tsar rode down the lines, beside the Daumont carriage drawn by white horses in which his mother and his wife were seated, and immediately behind him came two trumpeters. Then followed in procession the Grand Dukes and generals in command. After this the Tsarinas joined us in our tent. The Tsar pulled up in front ofthem, attended by only the two staff trumpeters, while the troops marched past. It was an amazingly beautiful sight. The magnificent horse-guard regiments rode at the head, the gay hussars followed, the light lancers, then the countless lines of infantry, guards, riflemen, sappers, artillery, and finally the Cossacks, who found it difficult to hold in their foaming steeds. The troops were in marching kit, with blouse and cap, as it was summer.The Tsar himself gave the orders for the cavalry and artillery, and the two trumpeters transmitted his commands—“ March !” “ Trot !” “ Gallop !’”? —by means of ringing trumpet calls.After a second march-past in different formation the parade was concluded, and the Tsar joined us in the tent. His eyes shone even more brilliantly than was their wont, and he seemed to be carried away by the happiness of being among his troops. In those days they were still loyal to their “ Gosudar-Imperator.” These parades left an indelible impression on my mind. It was with great emotion and pleasure that after the war I read the faithful and inspiring description given by Krasnov in his book "From the Imperial Eagle to the Red Flag".

Exhibition "Barry McGee" at the Fondazione Prada in Milan, 11 April - 9 June 2002

Intended specifically for the Fondazione Prada's space in Via Fogazzaro, this huge installation devised by McGee is entitled Today Pink (2002). This is entered through an unusual and decidedly bewildering passage, which, when one emerges, turns out to be the back of an overturned truck. In the exhibition space one finds oneself in a chaotic scene, consisting of abandoned vehicles covered with graffiti, figures painted on huge metallic or monochrome walls, and fragments of lighter, fluctuating objects. This is a world rich in signs and symbols that contain references to life in today's cities and are linked to images of American culture such as the large, enigmatic figure of a Native American painted upside down on a wall made of rusty iron sheets. As in the aftermath of a road accident, two abandoned vehicles invade the space. On their bodies the artist has painted his familiar faces, which, with their sad eyes, are a reminder of bowed, resigned humanity. The presence of this male figure is kind of like this everyman, and it's very specific to San Francisco, where there's a huge homeless population that everyone wants to be free of. The subject is to do with graffiti and the homeless kind of like an outcast, things that the city is trying to get rid of, or trying to hide, or pretending doesn't exist. On the walls, the dominant colour is red. This refers to a detail of the urban environment that has inspired the artist: In Chinatown in San Francisco the doors are painted red. They are great surfaces, they attract me a lot. Red is the colour of life.* Innumerable drawings appear on all the walls, following each other without a gap. Here the rapid gesture is interwoven with a clear, delicate line that depicts a world of images realized with a wide range of techniques (enamel, acrylics, spray paint, chalk and pencil): the result is a veritable crowd of human faces. Dominating the white space is a huge male figure with a childlike face: wearing black pants and a lightcoloured shirt, it has the severity and majesty of the Mexican murals. The intensity of the installation is reinforced by the presence of a bunches liquor bottles, used by McGee as supports for his paintings, together with a large number of miscellaneous multicoloured objects such as painted cases, road signs, table napkins, dry leaves, shop signs, panels, cast-off clothes and small drawings by the artist and by people dear to him.
