Because I was sparring with the homies tn and it came up how are longswords not finesse weapons in dnd??

Like. I have been swinging around longswords for 3 years now, and I have almost no muscle on me, at least compared to most of the people I fight frequently. I am a stick, and I am not foolish enough to try to overpower any of them. I hold my own through speed and playing feinting mind games with my opponent nonstop. One of my friends once described fighting me as “fighting a sentient bowl of spaghetti.” There is no strength modifier being added there.

In my experience, the most annoying people to fight in an unarmed longsword duel aren’t as much the giant brutes who can shatter your sword in a single blow, but the twitchy little gremlins whose swords instantly teleport back to being in your face no matter how many times you parry it away. Strength definitely helps, but dexterity is crucial.

A lot of the battle when you’re fighting with longswords is decided in the bind (which for those who do not know is basically when both your swords are pressed together and you’re trying to twist into a better position to get a hit than the other person), which strength can help you with, yeah, but I would argue dexterity and strategy are even more important there. But you can choose which modifier to add with finesse anyways, so if anything that just makes my point stronger.

And if it has to he a choice between versatile and finesse, I’d definitely take it as finesse. I know there’s some longsword techniques in Fiore that use one hand, and I typically use a german longsword which is longer than a Fiore longsword, but idk I just don’t think I would ideally use one with one hand, definitely not enough to take it as versatile over finesse

So yeah I’ve been rambling for a while but anyways thank you for coming to my ted talk lol
