as a die hard phantom hourglass enjoyer it makes me unreasonably happy to see the little coral treasure you can collect in that game making an appearance. also every linebeck appearance adds 10 years to my lifespan

My initial feelings about Spirit Tracks were pretty negative, but it has been on an upwards trajectory for a while. Here's some things I like about it:

Surprisingly an S-tier Princess Zelda, not only is there the obvious "she's playable for once" aspect, but the gameplay with her as the phantom is also fun, the stuff she has to say is entertaining, and she doesn't get disruptive/annoying as a companion.

I really like Linebeck and how his dialogue gives him a distinct voice without sounding too scripted, good job on that. I believe he's a legacy character so I guess I shouldn't give too much credit to this game about him but still.

The train customisation is great, I really enjoy riding around the world in my dumb little cake train.

Overall the train gameplay has gotten a lot better now that there's more things to do and more routes to take.

The train music is a great overworld theme, and I like the grassy area music too.

I expected to be all contrarian about the stylus controls but they work surprisingly well and tapping the buttons feels somehow super satisfying with the sound effects

The stylus controls also make the boomerang, whip and even the bow enjoyable to use. When I learned that one of the dungeon items would be bow and arrows I was kind of bummed because shooting projectiles is such a "seen it a million times" powerup, but the controls made even that work.

The stamps are a surprisingly fun collectible; it's a very small thing but there's just something that makes the stamp book yours when the placement of the stamp isn't predetermined on the page. And flipping through the pages with the stylus also feels good.

👑 Favorite version of Zelda?

Honestly really hard to pick just one. I like BotW/TotK Zelda a lot because she has such a fantastic arc and you really feel for her and her story plus I find her very relatable...

Spirit Tracks Zelda is easily among my favorites too, her being a ghost and your companion makes her SO unique and she's really funny and cute and has one of the best relationships with her Link, and she also gets to shine in combat, too!

Skyward Sword Zelda also set the standard for her backstory and I think she's so likable but I do wish we saw more of her in general...

Ocarina of Time Zelda had such a cool story what with messing with forces she didn't necessarily understand while trying to plot against Ganondorf even though she was just a kid, not to MENTION the Sheik reveal which is just iconic tbh.

Both for Hyrule Warriors and Wind Waker I don't have much to say in general about them but I still really like their take charge, more active attitudes! I do hate how they lighten Tetra's skin color and remove her from being active in the plot when the reveal comes though... you hate to see it!

Twilight Princess Zelda... what can I say, she is an elegant sapphic icon and she will always be famous. I was a bit ticked off when they changed out her for ALBW Zelda in Smash because I think she is much more memorable.

I would be remiss not to mention Wand of Gamelon Zelda at least a lil' bit too... Idk she's cute and cheesy and I'm not sorry for including her. Maybe if Nintendo made her actually playable in their games I wouldn't have to do it but 💅

🐳 If you were a Zelda character, what race would you be?

Probably a Hylian boringly enough but I would kill to be one of those occasional enemies that does their own thing for some reason, like... I could be a wolfperson who can't eat their yogurt until you trade me a spoon for my boomerang or whatever.

👊 Favorite Zelda Villain/Boss?

Villain-wise, I love Hilda... she was clearly in the wrong but my god I can completely understand the desperation... Twinrova also I ALWAYS adore seeing whenever they pop up - I love me some comically evil grannies. Ghirahim and Yuga heard "slay" and said "this has multiple meanings and I'll do all of them," and honestly Ganon(dorf) is super cool always but I particularly enjoy his portrayals in ALttP, OoT, WW and TP. Shoutout to Veran and Onox too for variety's sake.

Too many cool bosses to mention but Koloktos is still my fave.

🧚 Favorite Zelda companion?

Uh-Oh... Here's the thing about me - I'm an Annoying Companion Enjoyer (tm) and I don't think I dislike any of them, even the infamous ones. Navi is my girl she was just trying to help and everyone attacks her and attacks her and attacks her... ungrateful behavior.

Tatl is so iconic and funny, I will always be mad they kinda toned down her mean girl-ness in the 3DS remake, even though I get that some of it was for accessibility reasons since a lot of her og comments just weren't helpful at all lmao... tho I think they could have struck a better balance.

Ciela is SO underrated, honestly. She had a good arc and I love her bickering with Linebeck so much.

Midna has the best story out of all of them and everything about her is excellence from her design to her attitude to her relationship with Link and Zelda... ugh she is so good, I miss her.

I've already said my piece about Zelda in Spirit Tracks BUT WHO CARES, HER AGAIN!!!

Fi is the only one who actually made me sob in real life from her last scene and I really enjoy her design and her dances and I genuinely think people forget how sassy she could be sometimes, not to mention being the actual Master Sword - I was ecstatic when they hinted at her existence again in BotW and TotK :)

👍 Favorite Zelda Headcanons?

The Triforce being in flux and changing aspects between its wielders in some games, like Zelda in BotW potentially holding Courage since her key scene was going up alone against Calamity Ganon and Link's usage of the runes and primary association with Blue could tie to him bearing Wisdom in them. If not just headcanon, I think it's a prime idea for fan content.

This one also maybe doesn't count as a headcanon per se but... the Zelda Timelines... I greatly enjoy speculating around them but I do believe taking it too seriously is generally just bunk. I don't think even the developers take them as a wholly 100% accurate and important deal and I think that's actually completely fine. I am an ALttP->Link's Awakening->Oracle Games truther btw.

Hard to say but two games are my tops I'd say phantom hourglass! It was my introduction to the series and blew my mind as a kid, spent hours scouring online for puzzles still never finished it funny enough. My 2nd is hyrule warriors the 2014 one while not a mainline, I have been playing that title since the 3ds days and now onto switch I have a ton of hours sunken into it and introduced me to my 2 most fav characters like ever! These two titles are very dear to me! :]

i have a physical copy of phantom hourglass and it's my second most played zelda game!!! i have 106 hours on it :) i'm pretty sure that this was my first mainline zelda (i have a bad memory... i don't remember what came first: phantom hourglass, zelda i, or battle quest)

as my childhood zelda i can confidently say that i LOVE this game. it was basically my ocarina of time lol

phantom hourglass is criminally underrated. its mechanics are incredible!!! ph has my absolute favorite zelda puzzle, the one where you have to close your ds. peak puzzle design :)

its controls can seem gimmicky at times, but they are actually super fun! phantom hourglass is zelda design at its peak. i personally found the temple of the ocean king super fun!

also it literally has a multiplayer mode!!!!! and it's so fun!!!

the characters are super fun and enjoyable! i love the story a lot and hold it close to my heart. also, no matter what anyone says, the soundtrack is AMAZING.

other pros include the ghost ship, linebeck, general silliness, linebeck, sailing, and linebeck. i would 1000% recommend for anyone who likes wind waker or spirit tracks

all in all. I LOVE THIS GAME!!! cradles it like a baby. phantom hourglass is very precious to me

Phantom Hourglass is a DS only game that may be hard to find in hard copy. Secondhand or emulator may be the easier solution to play it yourself. A written walkthrough is here at ZeldaDungeon.net. The video walkthrough I liked was this one but you can search for others with no commentary as well.

Phantom Hourglass complete! Fortunately it ended up being more enjoyable than I anticipated.

The amount of stealth was a massive problem (Stealth! Timed stealth! Stealth where you're forced to walk slowly! Stealth escort mission!) but outside that I had fun with the gameplay. Also unlike the Tower of Spirits where the final bit was an absolute slog, here the Temple of the Ocean King actually got more enjoyable towards the end, when you get more powerful and are able to wreck shop with your new items. I didn't really mind having to do the dungeon multiple times as you dive deeper each time, I like the idea of being able to get through more efficiently with more experience and items, it's the timer that was the problem.

The items were as fun as they were in Spirit Tracks, and in general I like the stylus controls quite a lot. Initially I was disappointed when I learned that the final item would be the hammer, which was totally lame in aLttP and OoT, but here it was a ranged weapon and basically an upgraded version of the bow, which was already great to use. Travelling with the ship was also an improvement on the train from Spirit Tracks (or I guess the train was a downgrade), though customising it wasn't as fun since none of the options were as cute as the Sweets Train. Also a shout out to the bosses, usually I don't really care for boss fights in video games in general, but I wouldn't mind doing some of these again. Especially the big robot!

Story wise the game was pretty weak, with Linebeck being the only good story element. Or I liked Jolyne too I suppose but her part wasn't very large. An abysmal usage of Tetra really drags the story down, like what were they thinking here! This is the one place where Spirit Tracks dramatically improved everything. Ciela wasn't a particularly interesting companion, but thankfully not awful either.

Comparing the two games, I would surprisingly say that outside the earlier levels of the stealth temple I generally had more fun with the gameplay in PH, but story wise ST easily wins due to Zelda's performance. So I imagine that since I'm unlikely to play these games any time soon and now spend more time thinking about the story and characters, ST will stick with me longer.

Next is Wind Waker, assuming I can get it working properly.

I have reviewed his Zeldapedia page in order to jog my memory about him, so here are some scattered thoughts:

First off, context. I have been a life long enjoyer of Characters Who Are Assholes, which explains my immediate love towards characters like Midna and Linebeck. When preteen Frankie first saw the cool buff villain with a metal hand, she did not stand a chance.

But the thing is that while he is a villain, I don't remember him being a jerk. Ruthless, sure. But he really seems like a good person by the end of the story.

I really like his theme. It has this western vibes while still incorporating the flute motif.

I like how he never stops being mysterious, how the more you learn about him the more questions you have. If he was Anjean student, what other powers does he have?

When you play the spirit flute for him, he reminisces over the sound. How old is he? Was the flute once his? Had he ever played it?

Now that I am writing this out, he's kinda like Vaati if Vaati got a redemption arc? (will need to think about this more)

Also his death scene was brutal. If everyone in the LOZ series is in a reincarnation cycle, I'm sure his spirit will never be reborn. He's just gone now.

I like to think about what conversations he would have with Link and Zelda, if he'd gotten the chance. I wonder who he would relate to more, if he saw bits of himself in Zelda's spirit powers and Link's quest to grow stronger

I need to replay this game so badly now cause I just need to remember and think more about this guy omg
