A litany for Lent
My Lord, my Jesus, grant me constancy in my devotion, grant me the grace to descend into the grief of your sorrowful Passion, and to always fix on you my eyes, my heart, and my mind. As you go into the desert, Jesus, let me follow you. From the temptation to turn away from suffering, O Jesus, deliver me. From the temptation to dismiss my sorrow and the sorrow of others, O Jesus, deliver me. From the temptation to lose myself in distractions, O Jesus, deliver me. From the temptation to choose the pleasures of this world over your calling, O Jesus, deliver me. From the temptation to bury my feelings and cut myself off from your compassion, and others from mine, O Jesus, deliver me. From the temptation to reject and run from darkness, forgetting that it can never overcome your light, O Jesus, deliver me. To follow you into the wilderness, to bear hunger and thirst and never falter, Jesus, let me stay true. To withstand the temptations of the devil and of this world, Jesus, let me stay true. To wake with you in the garden and not turn from your agony, Jesus, let me stay true. To walk with you to Calvary and wipe the sweat and blood from your brow, Jesus, let me stay true. To fix my eyes upon injustice and never grow callous, Jesus, let me stay true. To let the sorrow of this world deeply pierce me and move me to compassion and right action, Jesus, let me stay true. To gladly carry my own cross, and help others carry theirs, Jesus, let me stay true. To strip away all my defenses and open my heart to your unfailing love,  that I may grow smaller and you greater in me,  that I no longer live but you live in me, that I may be a vessel to bring your light into this world,  Jesus, let me stay true.

Litany
by Rebecca Lindenberg
O you gods, you long-limbed animals, you astride the sea and you unhammocked in the cyprus grove and you with your hair full of horses, please. My thoughts have turned from the savor of plums to the merits of pity — touch and interrupt me, chasten me with waking, humble me for wonder again. Seed god and husk god, god of the open palm, you know me, you know my mettle. See, my wrists are small. O you, with glass-colored wind at your call and you, whose voice is soft as a turned page, whose voice unrolls paper, whose voice returns air to its forms, send me a word for faith that also means his thrum, his coax and surge and her soft hollow, please — friend gods, lend me a word that means what I would ask him for so when he says: You give it all away, I can say: I am not sorry. I sing.

I recently discovered the existence of a poem by Diane di Prima, titled “Litany (for Kathy Acker).” Apparently, it (or part of it? a version of it?) was performed by Diane di Prima’s partner at the scattering of Kathy Acker’s ashes, as detailed in Chris Kraus’s After Kathy Acker. When I learned of it, I freaked out, because Diane di Prima and Kathy Acker are two of my biggest inspirations/people whom I considered part of my literary lineage; also, I invoke the language of litany in a lot of my own poetry. I tried to track the poem down, but it doesn’t seem that any version of it has been printed anywhere, at least not anywhere accessible to me. What I did find was this, a 2019 performance of (a version of? part of?) the poem—and I decided to transcribe it. Unfortunately there were a number of words that were unintelligible to me; the sound quality in the video is not great, and one of the performers’ voices, in particular, was difficult for me to parse. So I did the best I could. Any words I could not make out have been replaced by [ ].

Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us. God the Father of Heaven, have mercy on us. God the Son, Redeemer of the world, have mercy on us. God the Holy Spirit, have mercy on us. Holy Trinity, one God, have mercy on us.
You knew your hour had come. You knew your betrayer. You knew your enemies. You knew that the straw vote would not be in your favor. But you loved unto the end. Thank you for loving us, even unto death. Teach us to love like you love. Teach us to love each other, to love even our enemies, like you loved us. You took on the form of a servant, washing the feet of those whom you discipled. You defined humility and servanthood. You are he who was surely sent from God. Thank you for serving for us. Teach us to be servants without fail; to make humility our constant companion and to seek no glory for ourselves. Remind us when we forget. On that solemn evening, you surrounded yourself with friends and enemies, persons of faith and persons of ill-will. Help us to be able to always emulate you when we are surrounded by our friends and especially when we are surrounded by our enemies. You have established a “new commandment;” help us to live it out in every moment, in every aspect of our lives, in our families, in our churches, in our communities, and throughout the world. On this Holy Day, we gather to remember again the miracle that you performed in our lives. You have brought us into the marvelous light. At great cost to you, you have given us new life and life eternal. Amen.
