Behind the Curtain: Little Dude

Take a peek behind the scenes at what goes on in our lives when we’re not working...whenever that is.

In 2018 about 5 months after we moved into our home (a lovely two bedroom trailer) I started to hear kitten meows from under my house. For almost 2 days I’d ask Ricky to check and he’d find nothing. Finally on the last day Ricky checked one last time. He told me to grab a box. I knew immediately it had to be the kitten I was hearing. I saw the little kitten and grabbed him up (apparently I completely ignored the giant spider nearby that I’d usually be terrified of). As I held him up I screamed “I’m not crazy! I knew I heard a kitten.” Then I calmed down and held him close to me. “It’s ok little dude. I got you.” That was the promise I made that August 2 years ago. And that’s how Little Dude got his name. After that Baby Grey, a cat that we had been feeding outside decided she was going to make her home with us and when she did she brought in all these kittens that she adopted. We think that she had a litter that died so she scooped up all the runts of other litters. When we took the rest of the litter to the shelter we decided to keep one other kitten that had grown close to us. She reminded us of Cher from Clueless because she’s a ditz so that’s what we named her.

Cut to today. The past few weeks have been chaos on top of the already dire state of 2020. Little Dude ended up getting super sick. We thought he was going to die. He suddenly got lethargic and wouldn’t eat, drink, go to the bathroom, etc. He always eats. He steals food from us whenever he can. We knew it was something bladder related but we didn’t know how bad it was. When we decided to rush him to the vet we didn’t have any money in the bank. Between begging friends and making a devil’s bargain with my step dad we were able to pay enough to get him in the door while we raised the rest of the money. Thank you so much for all of the wonderful friends who sent us money when we were down. Because of you guys he is home safe right now!

Little Dude was away from home for three days. He and I are together as much as possible and then he had to be away from me. I cried the day we took him to the vet. Sobbed. That seems like a normal response except I do not cry. If I’m crying it’s usually liquid hate streaming down my face. This was genuine sadness. I had convinced myself that he wasn’t coming home. I need him. I raised him from 3 weeks old. I felt like I broke that promise I made him two years ago. I did not “got” him. I dropped the ball and he was so very sick.

When we got Little Dude to the vet we were told he was critical and may need $3000 in work. We do not have that. I was going to find it but we don’t have that much laying around, usually (who does). We scrambled. We asked for a payment plan, cancelled vacations, gave up a rent check... anything just to save the kitten I promised I’d take care of. It took them the whole weekend but come. Sunday we got the call telling us he was ok. Little Dude could come home. We picked him up and I just sat with him. I figured it would take him a while to get better. He seemed tired and sluggish. Ricky left to get food for the two of us and I just stayed with my kitten. I used to laugh at people who talk about their “fur babies” but this is my son. He is family to me and what wouldn’t you do for family?

After Ricky came back we ate. And all of a sudden some “sick” little kitten was well enough to steal the chicken off my salad! Little Dude loves chicken. He was back! He was ok! I got him! And I’m never letting him get this bad again.
