Bill Cipher: Lord of Hope (the homestuck classpect)

explanation for why I picked this classpect for him under the cut

First of all, a brief note on how I interpret classpects: I think classpect is heavily influenced by one's narrative role in a story. It's influenced by personality too, of course, but someone with the exact same personality could have a completely different classpect depending on how the story uses them.

Lord is an extremely powerful class reserved for the big-bad in homestuck. It means having unimaginable amounts of control over your aspect (which here is Hope). It's also a volatile, destructive, and self-serving class. It's also the mirror and opposite of the Muse class, which is equally powerful, but wielded passively for the benefit of others, often using methods more like setting up all the components of a rube goldberg machine behind the scenes, rather than the Lord's preferred method of steamrolling over things whenever possible.

Second note on my classpecting philosophy: Each aspect has an opposite, and I think these aspect pairs meaningfully influence each other by virtue of being on opposite ends of a continuum. You might even say they're opposite sides of the same concept.

Hope is the aspect of imagination, limitless possibilities, belief, and the literal meaning as well. It also has a ton of religious undertones. Its opposite aspect is Rage, which, other than the literal meaning, is all about doubt, skepticism, tearing down facades, and seeking the truth at all costs. It carries a deep disdain for the unfounded and the sugar-coated. Instead of living in a world of fanciful ideas, it cares about pushing past anything it sees as substance-less to uncover the way things really are, no matter how ugly the truth might be. They both need each other--without Hope, Rage becomes misery. Without Rage, Hope becomes completely disconnected from reality.

Which brings me to Bill. On the Hope-Rage spectrum, he's leaned so absurdly far towards Hope that he's convinced himself Rage doesn't even exist. In his reddit AMA, he literally says "lie until what you want to be true becomes true. Lie until you can't remember what's a lie and what isn't. Lie until you aren't lying anymore." I can't think of a better encapsulation of what it means to push the Hope aspect to its absolute extreme. He believes so much in the power of belief that he simply ignores any truths he doesn't like.

He embodies the Hope aspect in many other ways, too. Originally he was going to be more of a morally-neutral trickster character, whose whole purpose was just to show up randomly in Dipper's dreams and rattle off wild statements of questionable truth and conspiracy theories at him. The kind of things that people hope are true (sometimes to make the world seem more exciting and magical, sometimes for bigoted reasons, you know how it is with conspiracy theories), but the point is: Bill retains some of this in his canon personality. He tells Ford in the journal that the moon landing was fake. When he first meets Gideon, he says the whole "reality is an illusion" thing. He delights in sharing these kinds of things with people, and yeah, it's to fuck with them, but there's still something to be said about the fact that he accomplishes this through the use of things that exist as uncertain possibilities in people's minds, and things that some people have a strong belief in and/or hope to find proof of. He's wielding Hope as a tool, because that's when he's in his element.

Bill also preys on people's hopes and dreams, appearing to people literally inside their heads, and existing mainly in dreams and minds for billions of years--a place where you really can create anything you can imagine. He uses Ford's hopes of accomplishing something meaningful to get him to create a doomsday device. He also has Ford practically worshiping him, calling him a Muse with a capital M, calling his presence 'divine intervention'... the religious themes that often go hand-in-hand with the Hope aspect are definitely present. Of course a Lord would wield the Hope aspect to give himself worshipers who practically see him as a god.

And, speaking of doomsday devices, Weirdmageddon is the exactly what would happen in a world where the Hope aspect ran rampant without any laws or restrictions or concrete truths. In the codes of Journal 3, Bill says, "why should time only move forward, why must cause precede effect, who voted on the laws of physics - rules are perversions against all will, that's why I'm about to rewrite the whole system buddy, and no one is going to stop me."

We also get some insight into Bill's beliefs when we take a look as Mabel's dreambubble. He literally uses someone's hopes as a weapon against them, trapping her inside a twisted version of all the things that could've been true, if only the world was fueled by pure imagination, without any laws of physics or imperfect days or boring moments. Bill is so confident that this trap is infallible that he doesn't even bother to stop Dipper from trying to get her out once he makes it inside the dreambubble. Maybe the reason why Bill is so confident that this trap is inescapable is because he's pretty much trapped himself in a dreambubble of his own creation, where anything is possible and fantasy wins over reality every time (talking about the nightmare realm here), and was so intoxicated by the limitless lawlessness of the place that he spent billions of years trying to expand his little self-imposed prison to cover the rest of the multiverse, rather than ever stop to question himself or consider the consequences. Because with enough Hope, there are no consequences, only infinite possibilities limited only by your own imagination! ...right?

I could probably go on, but I think this is more than enough to support my case for Bill being a Lord of Hope. I'm always interested to hear about other classpect headcanons though!

these polls received a total of 2523 votes, nearly 2 1/2 times as much as last year!

the biggest changes were Hope, down 3.6%, and Heart, up 2.3%. Thief and Void remained the most stable, with only a .1% change. the most popular classpect was Knight of Heart, with a total of 57 votes, or 2.26% of the responses! Nobody voted for Lord of Mind or Lord of Hope.

would also like to give a special shout out to the Thief class for ending with a total of 88 votes, 8% of which were for Thief of Light. great work, everyone.

of the canon classpects, Mage of Heart (Meulin) once again brought in the most votes, this time with 35! Bard of Hope (Cronus) got the least, with just one vote.

Flawed Vs achieved classpects

First post but whatever Ok, so i have a semi-Head canon/ Semi Theory about classpects, and this could be dumb but fuck it, my wife thinks its cool and thats good enough for me, Flawed Vs achieved classpects The basic premise is that everyone has at least 2 classpects, their flawed, and their achieved. Their achieved classpect is what everyone considers to be their actual classpect, what they achieve after all their hard work and journeys through sburb. Their flawed classpect, however, is when that fails, or if they fail to change at all.

Classpects are supposed to mark your ultimate self after moving past your problems through sburb, right? So... what happens if you just. dont do that? That is your flawed classpect. Think of it like the opposite of an ultimate self, you are the embodiment of your problems. Let me give an example. Say a player with heavy hatred towards themselves plays sburb, and throughout it, they learn to Accept, and even love themselves, while also helping others love themselves, and thus become a Sylph of heart. Now, lets look at another timeline. In this one, they continue to hate themselves, and even hate anyone who even acts like them. In this timeline, they fail to change, and achieve their flawed form, a prince of heart. Does this sound familiar? yes, that's just dirk. A flawed/Achieved classpect is one of those things that you cant really use a quiz or anything for, its a very introspective thigny [Sic]. It is also very specific to a person, and their personal problems. Here's a non-canon example I had involving canon characters that i thought was interesting. Caliborn, as a lord of time, is his flawed classpect. He does not improve, he does not change, he just takes what he wants, and kills who he pleases. Calliope, as a muse of space, is also her flawed classpect. She is unable to actually achieve anything, and just continues to do what she has always done. What are their achieved classpects? The opposite of eachother. Muse of Space Caliborn, and lord of time calliope. In this alternate timeline where they both achieve their true and ultimate selves, things go a lot differently. Firstly, with no LE to "already have been here", Calliope would have just given everyone a happy ending. Boring, I know, we love our angst here, but she would have just not let sburb ever happen, similar to the MSPAR timeline. But, with the help of a much friendlier muse of space caliborn, the two of them would have likely played around with the timeline itself, making new... Alternate Universes. Yep. They both basically just become actual AU and Fanfiction writers.

This actually makes sense too, as they're both meant to represent different parts of the fandom, and thus, the ultimate forms of the fandom are to come together and create something new. (MSPFA's, Fanfiction, AU's, Fanart, ETC.) Has this absolutely been a dumb theory? Maybe, but fuck it, its cool and i like it, so im posting it anyways.

I always understood why Calliope and Caliborn got to have the extra-special, never-before-seen, uber-powerful Master Classes, but I never loved it. To me, the two of them fit very nicely into pre-existing Classes (Rogue for Calliope and Prince for Caliborn) which echo their "prefered" humans (Roxy and Dirk, respectively.) So I hereby present Rogue of Space Calliope and Prince of Time Caliborn, in some AU where they two of them manage to play a 2-player version of SBURB (hence the shared tooth.) P.S.: I know the Rogue of Space's boots should be red, but I think it the green ones fit more nicely into the theme (plus, Vriska has red boots when she should have blue ones like Rose and Aranea, so deal w/ it :P)

TF2 and Homestuck crossover? Specifically so I can classpect the mercs? Yessir.

These are all my own interpretation (which is quite different than other classpecting ive seen done for the mercenaries in the past so. take em with a grain of salt and some classpects i feel more confident about than others)

Starting with…..

Scout - Page of Blood

He’s one of the first classpects I started with, and I’m fairly confident with his! Sburb/Sgrub is a game set on making its players go through emotional journeys + trials which Scout would definitely face plenty of. Pages start their journeys with a deficit in their given aspect and overcompensate for the lack of their aspect. And Blood is all about Bonds/ Interpersonal Relationships and Connection, which Scout definitely boasts about, with his teammates and with ‘the ladies’ though it doesn’t seem he can hold down relationships or friendships well, being seen as an annoyance by his teammates. So a Page of Blood would be someone who utilizes and empowers with connection! His journey/ quest would be about being able to drop his act of bragging about his greatness and truly trust + rely on his teammates and let them count on him in return! God Tiered, I see him serving a more supportive role, aiding teammates in battle and rallying everyone together! I could also see him having an ability to convince those he’s close with to follow his orders!

Soldier - Sylph of Rage

I know Sylphs are a female only class, but this guy breaks boundaries and the classpect fits him really well. Sylphs goals are to fix/ heal with their aspect, they’re meddlers and problem solvers and by god does Soldier get shit done (just in unconventional manners.) Rage is about (obviously) anger, but also passion, judgement and fear. So a sylph of rage heals Through Rage. And Soldier is THE Soldier, he knows how to problem solve and motivate his teammates to doing what he wants with his very vocalized opinions and thoughts on matters, which is why he fits this classpect exactly! He wouldn’t necessarily be considered an offensive class, (in homestuck terms) but dear god he can instill fear in enemy ranks. His journey/ quest would be focused on how to accurately get people to listen to him through rage, and how to uniquely motivate individual members of his team. I can see his God-Tiered abilities equipping him with the ability to instill or quell rage within all around him, completely draining enemies of their will to fight!

Pyro - Maid of Doom

Maids are another female centric class, but Pyro can be anything! Maids are all about creation Of their aspect (being MADE of their aspect) but they start being limited by their aspect. Maids also have a tendency to be unnoticed in their actions + how they benefit their team. Doom is about order + judgement, death, decay and fire! So a Maid of Doom is one who creates through Decay and such! Pyro, given the made class, would start in the session relying on their teammates for their judgement/ guidance on destruction, but once in game journey/ quest would be to put their foot down and start making their own decisions on what should/ should not be destroyed! If they were to god tier, they would be a very powerful destructive force to be reckoned with. (But given they are the merc we know the least about in terms of personality, this is all personal interpretation.) I can see them absolutely tearing through in game challenges post God-Tier because of their pure destructive potential!

Heavy - Bard of Heart

I know this seems like a weird one for the mascot of TF2, but considering Heavy’s disposition + backstory, i think this makes the most sense! Bards allow/create destruction through their aspect, initially ghosting their inverse aspect before crisis strikes. And Heart is all about soul, impulse, bias and passion! So, a Bard of Heart is one who allows and causes destruction of the soul and impulse. Being able to destroy soul, passion and heart in a fell swoop post God-Tier. Initially, Heavy ghosts mind with his closed off nature and being critical of revealing too much emotion. Obviously he can let loose in battle, yelling and shouting with joy and rage, but those are impersonal circumstances. But when pushed to a key moment, when he is forced to act on impulse and feeling rather than logic, he could truly start to grow as a Bard! I imagine his journey/ quest would pertain to engaging his emotions, making him decide between logic and emotion. (perhaps pertaining to a certain doctor on his team teehee!)

Demoman - Prince of Time

(Of course the psuedo-royalty man will get the prince class! /j) Princes, (like Bards) are also a destruction class that ghosts their opposing aspect while destroying their held aspect. (They also tend to have some self esteem issues + purposefully seek conflict hermmmm) And Time is about Music, Movement, Death and (obviously) Time! So a Prince of Time would be someone who Destroys Time! It sounds kind of gnarly, but my interpretation is someone being able to destroy moments in time. Snipping harmful actions from the timeline to try things again. I think Demo fits this very well because he starts out ghosting Space, the creation class, with his artfully crafted bombs, items Designed to be destroyed By Time. Clock goes down/ press of a button, they go boom. I can see his main challenge being overcoming his self esteem issues to value himself as an important player of the game (one of The Most Important players imo!)

Engineer - Knight of Space

this is a very heavy handed class, and i feel like with how integral engineer is to TF2 in lore as well as gameplay its fitting! Knights are obsessively determined exploitation classes who hide behind a mask of their own making (usually crafted due to fear of lacking their aspect) and Space players are patient, creative and ever evolving, with space itself being about Objects, Size, Placement and Creation itself! and A Knight of Space is one who controls/ exploits Creation! I can see godtier powers being similar to like. Lego Movie master builder abilities! Manipulating environments (and the Lack of environments!) to a Knights will! Engineer would start with a lack of space in his life, and Id interpret that like a lack of space in his personal life, he is So consumed by his work with space, he hides and neglects his personal space and life! I can see his quest revolving around control/ the lack of control and making Engineer learn to embrace chaos and tumultuous situations (emotional and otherwise) with grace! He likely wouldn’t have much difficulty at all with creation of the genesis frog given Knights obsessive patterns.

Medic - Heir of Life

Heirs are a powerhouse and (gifted?) sort of class that start almost with the advantage of their aspect! They also have a tendency to be vessels of plot, getting a lot of shit done in the background without much acknowledgement. And Life is about energy, living, plants/ animals as well as growth! So a Heir of Life is someone who Embodies and Channels Life!! Medic is definitely a powerhouse, no doubt. He’s likely in his early to mid 50’s and is still running about on the battlefield being flocked by his doves, he is a Conduit of life for his team! And given his penchant for impromptu surgery and experimentation, he’s a controller of life and death. I can see God Tiered abilities for a Heir of Life like medic giving him insane regenerative abilities to himself and all those around him! His quest would likely be learning how to channel his boundless energy and life power to be a bit less selfish with his choices. Heirs generally have an easier time in Sburb so I doubt he would go through much personal growth, but he would have the potential to become VERY powerful!

Sniper - Mage of Breath

Mages are the most difficult classes to prescribe in my opinion because we know so little about them in cannon. But from what Ive been able to glean, mages are knowing informants who know their aspect through and through by tumultuous life experiences. Breath is a fairly straightforward aspect, being about freedom, wind, flexibility and options. So a Mage of Breath is someone who learns and advises through freedom and flexibility. My vision for Sniper as a Mage is less on his physical role in game and more backstory focused. Mages typically suffer from their aspect in some way, and being raised as a farm boy, isolated in Australian society due to his true parentage he doesn’t even know till adulthood, on top of suffering from purposeful isolation in his relationships as well, distancing himself from teammates as well as his parents, I think he fits the shoe well! I see his quest forcing him out of his comfort bubble of isolation, forcing him to pay attention to bonds and abilities of his teammates to interject into others lives. I could see god tier abilities for him giving Sniper direct intel of enemies and teammates from the winds! He’d be a very powerful information gatherer if he put himself to the task!

Spy - Thief of Void

This one i felt was the most blatantly obvious. The espionage aspect with the espionage tf2 class just makes sense. Thieves steal their aspect for personal gain, but generally have good intentions at heart. Void is about Secrets, Confusion, Darkness and Potential. So a Thief of Void is someone who steals Secrets/ Darkness for themselves! Thieves start off fairly adept in their skillsets, and I dont imagine Spy any different! He is Already extraordinarily experienced in obtaining secrets and general thievery, his entire job description fits a Thief of Void to a T post SBURB/SGRUB. God-Tiered I could see Spy being able to steal secrets from peoples minds potentially and general “nonexistence” of things (like roxy!) Void players also have a connection to the Furthest Ring, which i could see Spy eventually taking advantage of (and potentially going Grimdark by accident in his attempts to steal information from the horrorterrors as well!) Id imagine his quest to circle around getting the consorts of his planet to tell him secrets about key locations and important information forcing him to expand his skillset!

Introduction to my Classpecting Ideas

This felt like a good idea for something to put out before I put my Knight & Page analysis out there, since I plan on making this a 6 part series. (Potentially 7 if demand for a Lord/Muse addendum is high enough).

So, I'll be laying out my most important philosophies on the subject here for future reference.

Classpecting is...

Point A. Classpecting is malleable.

There is not one rigid, set definition for any Class pair, or any Aspect pairing. The freedom of the author is that they may assign any symbolism to a concept that they may like.

What I mean by this is that people often seem to think that manifestations of an Aspect within Homestuck's narrative paint that object or idea as a concept inherently tied to that Aspect.

Example: Pumpkins & Void. You would not believe the amount of people in the early fandom who swore by the idea that pumpkins were inherently just Void constructs because of their role in Homestuck's narrative.

No? Pumpkins symbolise Void in Homestuck itself and Homestuck itself only only due to a running gag inherent to Homestuck itself.

Anything, with enough narrative basis and existing thematic ties, can serve to symbolise an Aspect. Furthermore, two different authors may have different ideas of what Aspect something represents.

Some authors may see alcohol, for example, as a Void-bound concept owing to its obfuscation of fair judgement. Some may see it as a Light-bound concept owing to the idea of 'in vino veritas' and the tendency of drunkenness to induce truthful confessions. Some may see it as a Life-bound concept owing to its associations with hedonism and impulsive behaviour.

With enough narrative consistence, anything is possible. Homestuck's narrative is not as rigid of a point of reference as some people would swear by it being. This is deeply important.

Point B. Classpecting is not the whole of a character.

I can't exactly phrase this in a satisfactory manner, but... a Classpect is not a personality type in of itself. An individual being a Prince of Heart does not instantly make them Dirk Strider. It merely means that their core value is identity & selfhood, and they interact with it by destroying it. It is that simple!

I see, time and time again, Classpecting blogs acting as if a Classpect is indicative of a character's whole personality and giving guides as to the exact behaviours & quirks a character with that Classpect should have.

I am imploring you to explore wider possibilities when it comes to this. Even if it means sharing a title with a canon character! It doesn't mean you have to just rewrite that canon character because that's not how Classpecting works.

I've seen fanventure characters share titles with canon characters. (Sovereignstuck's Annomi Errata & Dynama Zarrow sharing titles with Dirk & Porrim respectively, and Porrim herself is also a player in that narrative, mind you!)

I've seen fanventure characters share titles with eachother. (Vast Error's Dismas Mersiv is a Rogue of Mind. One of my fantrolls is also a Rogue of Mind!)

In every instance, they are fundamentally different people. I cannot put it any simpler than this.

Point C. Classpecting is always applicable.

That is the perfection of the Classpecting system. You can give a title to any character, from anything ever made. It's not even that difficult if you're half-decent at media analysis!

Quite literally all you need to do is ask yourself two questions.

"What's this character's core value?" and "How do they interact with that?" Do that, and you've got yourself a Classpect.

That's the beauty of it! It's obviously not going to be as airtight as a story that has the Classpecting system baked directly into the narrative, but it's still going to work out!

Hell, do it to yourself! Do it to your friends! The world's your oyster. You can do anything you want, forever, for the rest of time. I'm a Seer of Life! My best friend is a Page of Blood! My mother is a Witch of Hope! Go wild.

Post formatting

For my Classpecting posts, I'll aim to give two related definitions for every Class.

Definition A is the narrative function, what the Class says about the person and how they interact with their Aspect as an abstract concept.

Definition B is the practical function, what the Class says about their role in the session and how they interact with their Aspect as a SBURB construct.

Therefore, we get an idea of both the abstract, personal definition of a Classpect, and the functional, game application of a Classpect.

I'll also aim to give about two or three examples for each individual title about how you could write a character with them, since there are always going to be multiple directions you can take with a Classpect.

Conclusion

tl;dr - what I'm trying to say is this. Classpecting is malleable, easily applicable & capable of saying any number of things, and my posts will aim to give two concise definitions of both narrative and practical function for every title.

I'll get the Knight:Page analysis done either today or tomorrow, and the rest of the Class posts will be staggered releases in order of poll results. Thus, the order is going to be:

Knights & Pages, Deficiency and Exploitation.

Mages & Seers, Experience and Comprehension.

Witches & Heirs, Adherence and Manipulation.

Thieves & Rogues, Inundation and Redistribution.

Maids & Sylphs, Maintenance and Generation.

And, potentially...

And then, subsequently, the order for the Aspect posts, which I've decided based on relevance to the canon, roughly speaking anyways...

Heart & Mind, Instinct and Dialectics.

Life & Doom, Progress and Stagnation.

Hope & Rage, Conviction and Iconoclasm.

"Rage" is the thing with fire

That's burning deep inside
