Meta & Flint, the freaks who named their daughter Oblivion.
Don't let their looks fool you, they are actually good parents. (Maybe "okay" parents, they did let Liv run away with her boyfriend they never met and his band at 15. (But she was responsible and called them to explain her decision and that she already talked with the school and will be taking special exams at the end of every semester, so it's all good lmao.))

In my AU the Techno/Rock Trolls are the largest population of mixed trolls. They live concentrated along the shore between the Rock and Techno Kingdoms and also extending north into the no-man's-land on the map. This whole area is simply referred to as "the Shallows". They have their own communities and villages there which are located partially on land or exposed reefs/rocks and partially in the water.
Liv grew up in one of those villages. Her parents own a small apartment carved into a cliff side above the ocean. Personally they prefer walking over floating/swimming, and they can't stay in the sun for too long either (they all inherited sun sensitive skin from their Techno sides) so this way they're mostly on land and also aren't in direct sunlight after noon.
It's a modest home but I imagine they must have the prettiest sunrises.
Tumblr media
Despite the Shallows having their own communities they still belong under the Rock Kingdom which doesn't really care about them or their different needs much, so a lot of the trolls living there are very anti authority.

Lewis Hamilton as The Emperor:
The Emperor tarot card symbolizes the ultimate male ego and absolute ruler of the world, with a sign of sterility of regulation and unyielding power. This card is often associated with a strong sense of authority, control, and structure. It can also represent a need for order and stability in one's life. It is your hard work, discipline and self control that have bought you this far.
While the Empress represents the archetypal mother, the Emperor represents the father. He exudes authority - and though he is stern, he is also filled with wisdom and understanding from his years. He signals structure, stability and the rule of thought over the heart.

Speaking of alternate history, I've been reading GURPS: Infinite Worlds again (a really really great book if you're interested on alternate history) and it's so obvious the authors are some kind of libertarians
The collection of alternate worlds are so interesting but what's funny is that even if you have fantasy worlds with Atlantis and shit, the dinosaur people world, the alchemy worlds (yes, I did get some inspiration from that), among the other alternate history classics like the Axis victory world and such... but then the communist parallel worlds all classified as Lenin-1, Lenin-2, Lenin-3 and so are all grim places in decline and one is straight up a hell world where the biosphere is collapsing. I think they outright state that there's no worlds where communism worked like it's a fact of nature and the reader is just supposed to accept it. It's hilarious when you think about it.

i met so many completely lovely people in the psych ward. being on the trans unit was so fucking special and also really fucking funny--i had multiple mutual friends with people there, there were three people there besides me who had all gotten tattoos from our other mutual friend, my psych ward roommate was another harm reductionist who does outreach with a group that we also work with sometimes, everyone had really good taste in music and we would do things like get up at 7 am and start listening to harsh noise and then also listening to metal and having fake no touch mosh pits in the group room. genuinely i think the most community i've ever felt at the psych ward and they made it so much fucking easier to get through it.
still so fucking pissed that they put me on an involuntary hold and didn't even have the fucking dignity to tell me about it but the people there made it So much easier to get through it

Superman is the myth that the most powerful being will always chose righteous compassion.
Batman is the myth that the most privileged man will always chose empathetic justice.
Wonder Woman is the myth that the greatest warrior will always chose unwavering love.
These themes are central to the reasons why they are superheroes. It’s also why they stand atop as the Trinity.

I just think that true love is really rare and when you see it it hits you like a lightning bolt and that’s the thing I love about romance.
#is this about fiction or real life#yes#no but genuinely#I know it’s not rare but also it IS#it happens all the time BUT IT ALMOST NEVER HAPPENS#after I taught pride and prejudice one of the kids asked me why I liked it so much and this is essentially what I said#I just think —especially in stories BUT ALSO IN REAL LIFE—#that there’s a lot of times you’re told a couple is in love and you’re like ‘okay’#and you don’t even necessarily disbelieve it in an active way#(I used your average action movie or superhero movie with a romance happening in it as the example)#but most of the time it’s stock. it’s—it’s just there. you know it but you don’t feel it#and other times you just KNOW. and I have never been more convinced of a couple’s love for each other#than Lizzy and Darcy#the kids were like ‘okay wow’ but it’s TRUE#and it’s true because they’re#both real characters!!!! with real consistent journeys!!!!!!! in a fully created world that has real stakes!!!!!!#it takes all that reality to create that love. the bar is actually sooooooo high#also sometimes you have reality in fiction but still no love. why? no one knows!#there’s an element of mystery to all of it and it makes me go insane!!!!!!!!#my secret is that I am a die-hard romantic but my secret is that I AM ALSO OFTEN UNMOVED#I AM JUST SAT#I DON’T BELIEVE IT WHEN YOU SAY IT#(you being an author telling me#your fictional couple is in love)#I just sit there coldly like ‘okay’#SO WHEN I DO ACTUALLY SEE IT OR FEEL IT#it’s UNDENIABLE#and that gets me#also. Westley was right when he said ‘this is true love do you think this happens every day’#yeah 😭😭😭😭😭 YEAH 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

i believe that shipping tentoo/rose and recognizing that the way it happened was fucked on the doctor's end and traumatic on the end of rose herself can coexist. saying both of these things do not contradict each other.
i can say that the metacrisis is still the doctor and say that rose was right at first to say "he's not you," because of the context rose has in the moment and the work rose had put into finding the doctor that she conceptualized as the doctor.
i can also say that he tried to manipulate her into choosing the metacrisis because that is what he believed was best for her, even though i can also say she did choose to kiss the metacrisis in her own right.
and finally, i can say, that it was fucked up he left her in norway, solely because, bro, that's a long way away from where they need to go lol.

There's a whole discourse going on right now about these two Dramione fics that got turned into books, but that, however is not the point of this post (except why on god's green earth are people stillll fucking with Harry Potter, Joanne is a TERF, but I digress) the point is I saw someone. Who is IN fandom, say that fic isn't a good place to learn to write character development and I'm like. R u. Serious. ARE U SERIOUS??? Pre-existing character or no, in the context of any fic you still have to do CHARACTER work. I'd argue that many of the fics I read these days have more in-depth character work than half the books that get big shiny deals (books that are less hyped often have the BEST character work, tbh! Not always, but often!) Character is like THEE point of fic, actually!!!!! It's why most people write it, and not everyone is just copy/pasting popular fanon as character traits people are out there doing amazing stuff!
And like, sure, there can be bad character work in fic! I complain about it enough in my group chat if I think something is OOC, but proclaiming that fic specifically is not a good place for character work is just. Insane. What a thing to say.

I FINISHED MY SEWING PROJECT WOOOOOO! And then read almost nothing for a couple of weeks about it. Went to a few craft days at the library, and then a chocolate and tea event at the library, reached out as a volunteer and will likely be helping with end of summer reading programs as well. Given the state of the world, I'm trying to reach out to the parts of my community I care about. It's scary, but I'm doing it scared.
I've also been tasked with doing a couple samples for the yarn shop! Can't share it because turns out the colors chosen are perfect for a friend and yarn shop says I can send it off when it's done being displayed. Someone remind me to take progress pictures for later posting.
Despite fewer sewing hours for audiobooks, I still managed to get through more of my yearly list! I now have two more books on my Illumicrate list before I've completed that section, and I think I may actually do that.

The Storm Crow by Kayln Josephson ⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Too much romantic pining, not enough crows. Once the crow hatched I started having more fun, but I think you should have more on your mind while your kingdom is in peril than the cute baker with strong arms. I do like the cute baker with string arms though, I will say that. Probably the least offensive YA love triangle.
Archivist Wasp by Nicole Kornher-Stace ⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Fine and interesting, but something felt missing. Even having read Firebreak and Flight & Anchor, I found things to be a little confusing. The ending was the best as everything came together, but getting there was slow going. Also not sure why this is included on ace lists. I mean I know the characters are ace, but there's no inclination from the text. At least let him kill the woman who implied he only cared about his partner because they were romantically involved (they were not). Still not a bad read, just. Not as good as it could be.
The Art of Destiny by Wesley Chu ⭐️⭐️ – The fact I read fourteen (plus an immediate reread) books in the time it took to finish this says it all, to be honest. It was very slow with no payoff and I always found something better to do. Will try book three, but I won't force myself to finish it like I did this one.
Julia Child’s Kitchen by Paula Johnson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Who wants to go on a trip with me to The Smithsonian? I MUST see this kitchen. I know our beloved Julia Child has been gone for twenty years, but when we got to that part, I still felt like I was losing a friend! And The whole point of the book was cataloging the dismantling and reassembling of her kitchen for the museum, and still! When they dismantled it, I felt like I was losing a friend! She really did change so much about cooking education I love her.

The Girl From the Other Side: Deluxe Editions I and II by Nagabe ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – I don’t usually rate manga until I’ve finished the series, but this was SO good. My friend got me these for my birthday and now I’m trying to source the rest because I need this series to ruin me emotionally. Also pleased to be reminded of Elias from Magus’ Bride only to come to tumblr and discovered him and Teacher are Shipped. Keep up the good work, tumblr.
Black Flame by Gretchen Felker-Martin ⭐️ – I will admit, when I realized this was the same author who wrote Manhunt, I was skeptical. Manhunt is on my Do Not Read list because I just don’t think I will vibe with it. This confirms that fact. Probably wouldn’t have read this if it wasn’t free. I’m way too asexual for it, but also? The writing just wasn’t that good? Reminded me of Hell Followed With Us in some ways. That’s not a compliment.
A Dark and Drowning Tide by Allison Saft ⭐ – My biggest hang up is on the Fantasy Judaism that isn't all that Fantasy. Just because you call it Yevanish doesn't mean you can take things about Jewish history and slap it onto your character that 1) pulls away from her family and religion and 2) joins the German guy who is perpetuating antisemitism because he promised to colonize fantasy Europe and give it to your people. Adelaide was right and no one wants to admit it. The romance wasn't even good, they spent 70% of the time arguing until they decided to fuck about it.
Opening Fire (Old Guard vol. 1) by Greg Rucka ⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Ah. I'm sorry, but I prefer the movie. If only because I think the art is Hideous.
I also started Hammajang Luck, but since I finished it well into August 2nd, it'll be on next months wrap up. August brings a round of doctors appointments for EDS evaluation in my hands, and if all goes well I should have splints by the end of the month and I am SO excited about it. I still have to find someone to Officially Diagnose me so I can find out how to handle neck and hip pain, but it's a start!
Being so close to finihsing my Illumicrate goals has be eager to just jump right in to my last couple of books. I'm not saying that's an August Goal, but it might be an August Goal. I also have to read Dune for book club. I do not want to read Dune. How can I make reading Dune fun.
I haven't been doing much art lately, as I've been working on yarn shop projects, but my commissions are still open if anyone is interested in helping pay for my teeth in September. My phone bill for that month is paid thanks to the kindness of the internet, so anything moving forward will go directly to teeth! I appreciate the kindness of the internet, cannot express that enlugh <3

My two greatest character flaws are that I'm cranky and lazy.
My third greatest character flaw is the acute lack of compassion for people who smuggle exotic animals (like a serval) into a country where they are illegal (like norway) because keeping one as a pet is 'their dream' and then throw a pity party when said animal is seized and at risk of euthanasia. I'm sorry pal but you did that.

i don't think i've gotten over reading those few chapters of that one version of the Bible we used for a university class cause it was so fucking jarring like;
the version of the Bible I grew up with: god is a gentle but occasionally strict father who genuinely cares for his children and creations. as punishment for eating the apple, Eve and all her descendants will now experience the pains of childbirth + periods.
the version of the Bible a lot of people have read, apparently: God is an Authoritative Figure to be Feared, and you must do anything to please him and avoid punishment. as punishment for eating the apple, Eve and all her descendants must now serve Men, forever. oh and also the childbirth and period thing.
like. wow. holy shit. a lot of Specific People's behaviour makes a Lot More Sense if that's the version they grew up with. I mean, "respect all figures of authority and do whatever you can to please them Or Else" sure is something that would fuck someone's brain up

Bnha makes me so mad because it could’ve been good. It had a lot of good aspects. But in the end none of them were satisfyingly resolved so it just feels bad.
