You probably heard it before, but I'm so thankful for this event. It allowed me to meet many friends, motivated me to finish projects that I seriously doubt would have ever been done without it, and all in all just makes the 1st of the month a fun day that I look forward to.

I tried to put as many references as I could in this banner, I definitely missed jokes but it is starting to get a little crowded haha !

I hope my silly banner is at least amusing to you, and that it properly conveys my love and gratitude to the mods and admins of the event.

And to the fellow WAT-ers, I can't wait to write with you all again next month !

July LU Write-a-Thon Round Up: 236,122 Words in One Day!

Welcome to another roundup! This July event—held from 12 am to 12 am AWST—88 writers joined us in our game to write as many productive words as humanly possible. We had just the best time last month, thank you all for coming!

Directly below are the general statistics for this month (so much credit to the lovely zarvasace) followed by the Winner’s Circle, Clubs, Superlatives, and Bingo sorted in alphabetical order within each section. This month, the statistics and clubs were self-reported through submission sheets — superlatives, as every month, were assigned by other members of the event. Bingo was played on the server itself. Thanks again to zarvasace for putting together all of our lovely spreadsheets, to the mods for helping us run this event, and to all of you for coming!

Winner’s Circle (Top 5 Most Wordiest)

At 12,412 words, “Writer of all Time” goes to @glowingmin. Congratulations on such a huge word count!

At 9,582 words, second place goes to tempestmouse (no tumblr). Amazing job this month!

At 9,034 words, “Dear mothling<3” goes to @hytiaa for being a new Sky COTL player and having a lot of fun theorizing about the game! 

At 8,960 words, “Serial Writer” and “Helper Bee” goes to @awkwardfebruary for being silent but deadly and also helping other people in the LUWAT get adjusted!

Clubs

Clubs! In these, participants were allowed to come together and find common ground around a chosen topic or theme. These clubs were completely public, so anyone could join the fun and combine their word counts for some friendly competition. Thank you all for playing, check out your stats below!

The Creek is Beautiful Club

For those that went down by the creek for some good old fashioned creek time!

“Swapped Timezones, Still Got Words” and “Smoke Signals Only” go to @fithesworddweller for having an incredibly busy schedule yet still showing up where they could and writing 2.5 times their funny number goal! 

“Early Bird” goes to @i-love-zelda-16 for writing a ton and then disappearing at the start of the event, and then popping up later to cheer everyone on! 

@lizzable received both “Marathon Sprint's Favorite” and “Whump Enjoyer” for feeding Sprinto a ton of words during marathon sprints that also happened to be some lovely Wild whump!

“Gifter of Titles” belongs to @maddrumsticks2 for giving out superlatives like it's a holiday! We appreciate you for doing so!

“The Lurker” goes to @magiowlio for being as silent as an owl and flying under the radar!

@thejolteonmastertj received “Reinvented the Wheel” for doing scholarly reasearch on wheelchairs and the history of the wheel during the LUWAT and sharing their amazing results!

“Legend Enthusiast” goes to @poposusz for embodying the spirit of the Veteran and overshooting their word count within the first few hours of the LUWAT and then walking out.

“Multi-Talented MasterWind” and “Dave” were earned by @savimatteo2810 for refusing to be held back by a single format of creativity, whether writing, role playing complete with audio files or learning code to make an LU horror game! 

@starseekerwrites earned “Writer Turned... More Mysterious Writer” for lurking for most of the LUWAT but showing up at the eleventh hour to post a lot of words!

“Master Portrait Artist” goes to @sweeteastart for their utterly gorgeous portrait of Flora and her father for the July LUWAT spreadsheet! Amazing work!

@zips-quips earned “Permanently Exhausted Pigeon” for staying up two whole days to take part in the LUWAT. Admirable, but hope you caught up on sleep afterwards!

Club for funny little slug cats (from Rain World) to eat Costco macaroni and cheese and talk about Deltarune

@anime-obsessed earned “Wants to eat Costco” for, as the name suggests, wanting to eat Costco despite never having been there before! 

@bittirsweeteer got “Deltarune Arc” for going on their own Deltarune Arc with the release of Chapter 3 and 4 and involving ?ploo club in it too!

“Double or Nothing” goes to @waterfallstream for quite literally doubling their word count at one point. Amazing job on words!

Cosy Deity Club

For those who like being comfy and cosy, or who love the Fierce Deity!

@bluevaractyl got “Forgot WAT goes for 24 hours” for waking up confused later as to why they were still receiving pings when they thought the event had ended! 

“Most likely to get sassed with stars” goes to @cat-at-a-writing-desk for posting something that was starred, protesting at the stars, and then receiving stars on those protests too!

@lawyernovelist received “Wounded Writer” for pushing through a hand injury to write a lot of words. The tenacity is admirable, but take care of yourself!

“Boneless” goes to @lou-is-sleepy for apparently not having bones. Congratulations(?)

“Group Mom” goes to @musical-chan. You know why. 

@sksninja received “Commentor of All Time”. Comments keep writers going, so we thank you for feeding us!

@tashacee earned “Mermaid” for being able to withstand amazingly different temperatures that only mermaids can do, and having their profile picture include them as a mermaid too!

@lunaopus received both “Lawn's Slightly Singed Trophy Husband” and “Elmo” for roleplaying Elmo in the chats! How did that conversation even happen???

“Servalicious” was given to @servinny because of “:)”! What a compelling reason!

@somanyfanficssolittletime gets “Counts Stitches, Not Words” for crocheting instead of writing and “Needs to be blanket burrito'd stat!” for how much they deserve amazing dreams.

@playingforward earned “The Pen Can Be Used For Drawing, Too” for painting during the entirety of the WAT and doing 12 whole paintings. That is huge, wow.

@taddy-cat got “Cheerleader” for their efforts and kindness during the WAT!

July LU Write-a-Thon: 351,092 Words in One Day!

On July 1, we hosted our second monthly LU Write-a-thon (organized by @not-freyja and @hotcheetohatredwastaken and joined by their new mods @noorahqar, @a-manicured-lawn, and @winterfen). The purpose of this event was to write as many productive words—words that furthered yourself, the LU writing community at large, or your own stories—within 24 hours as humanly possible. 

We had a whopping 90+ participants as opposed to our previous 16 - none of us expected such a large turnout, and were suitably unprepared 😅 We’ll definitely be making a lot of changes to accommodate that many people during the next Write-a-Thon, occurring August 1st. Thank you all for your patience!

But, until next month, here’s the awards and titles earned by each participant, as voted upon by the Discord server through an anonymous survey. The mods read through all your hundreds of submissions (thank you guys so much!) and picked either the highest voted title or the funniest custom submission for each person, as we found appropriate. First up is the winner’s circle, then the clubs, and then everybody else in alphabetical order right below this readmore!

The Winner’s Circle (5 Most Wordiest)

20,037 “Writer of All Time” and “Most Likely to Make 1K become 100K” (As can be seen in all its glory in your Aspects AU) @tashacee: You took advantage of Freyja and Cheeto’s beefing about who would be first and snapped up the win right from under their noses. Well played! 

20,011 “Writer of Some of the Time” and “Pen and Paper (Scritch... Scratchy?)” @hotcheetohatredwastaken: Missed the mark by juuust a bit, for the second time in a row. Cheeto, you suck. (:3 –Cheeto) (Qar wrote this, for reference!). Also wrote for most of the marathon on pen and paper!

Now while everyone’s accomplishments as individuals were nothing to sneeze at, teamwork does in fact make the dream work. A few lovely people made a couple of equally lovely groups, either by their own choice or as assigned by peer review.

LU Write-A-Thon

This our second monthly LU Write-A-Thon, spearheaded by @hotcheetohatredwastaken and myself, will run on July 1, 2024 from 12 am to 12 am GMT (7pm to 7pm EST starting June 30). There is one goal in mind with this event---write as many productive words within that day as humanly possible.

Originally a fun game amongst friends, we are now opening this up to the general fandom-body-public (and happily so) by popular demand!

The event will be hosted on discord, and the link will go out via a reblog/reply/edit combo on this post a few hours before the event starts.

We're so excited to have all of you come and write with us, and the event rules are right here blow the cut:

What counts as writing?

Writing fanfiction or original fiction, leaving or answering comments, outlining, drafting, storyboarding, personal journaling, and (writing) homework---basically, anything that furthered yourself, the LU writing community at large, or your stories with a positive word count, can be included in your final word count.

(Editing previously-written works can also be included, but only if it produces a positive word count, and only those new words may be counted. The goal is to get new words on the page).

What CANNOT be counted as writing?

General chatting, talking about already written works, etc, will not count towards your final word count. Words counted must, as previously stated, further yourself, the writing community, or your stories. This does not mean that you can't chat with your fellow writers---the ⁠⁠chaos-chat thread was created for such a purpose!---but the main goal of this event is to produce and engage in writing in one form or another.

What is a sprint, and what is the schedule for the sprints?

Sprints are (voluntary) periods of concentration in which writers will write as much as they can within a time limit, with some friendly competition to be the one with the most words by the end of the sprint. These will be hosted in the ⁠⁠sprint-bot thread. Every hour, the times :00 to :15 will be dedicated to a 15 minute rest, and then a 45 minute sprint will run from :15 to :59. Moderators will start the sprints periodically---writers can jump in as desired.

Do you have to participate in the sprints?

No. You can write on your own if you wish, just make sure to keep track of your total and only count what is written in the window of 12am to 12am GMT (7pm to 7pm EST) on July 1. Additionally, you can write in the suggested breaks between sprints, but again, make sure to keep track of your word count on your own then.

How should I count my words?

There are two main ways that you can count your words---using the Sprinto Bot in the ⁠⁠sprint-bot channel, or keeping track of them yourself. If you are keeping track of them yourself, especially if you're counting words other than fiction writing where your word count is easy to find, please take care to be as accurate as possible---you can use an application like Google Docs or Word to give you your exact word count, even if you have to copy and paste your ao3 comments into them to get it.

If you're handwriting, this gets a little bit rougher to calculate, but we'll encourage you to give it your best estimate.

We'll be on the honor system here: play fair, and report as accurately as possible.

Where/When should I report my words?

Final word counts will be reported in the ⁠⁠word-count-total channel. We encourage you to make ONE post at the beginning of the marathon with your word count; then, as the event continues, you can edit your post and update your word count there.

You can update your word count at any point during the marathon in the channel mentioned above---in fact, the breaks between sprints would be a great time. And once the event is over, there's a period of grace of up to 6 hours for everyone to get their word counts in, but no more writing is allowed during this time. After 6 hours (6 am GMT; 11pm EST), the thread will be locked, and no more additions will be made. So be sure to get your final count in as soon as possible, once the event is over (or even before, if you must dip early).

What if I can only write a little?

That is fine. We are going to be playfully competitive, but it is not a contest---it is a group project. We are using teamwork to make the line go up. Every word counts, and any amount of writing is a fantastic amount of writing. The goal is to do better than last time AS A GROUP, not individually. So do what you can, and be sure to have fun with the rest of us!

June LU Write-a-Thon Round Up: 335,619 Words in One Day!

Welcome to another roundup! This last June event, held from 12 am to 12 am EST, we had 96 writers join us in our game to write as many productive words as humanly possible. We had just the best time last month — thank you all for coming!

Directly below are the general statistics for this month (so much credit to the lovely Zarvasace) followed by the Winner’s Circle, Clubs, Superlatives, and Bingo sorted in alphabetical order. This month, the statistics and clubs were self-reported through submission sheets — superlatives, as every month, were assigned by other members of the event. Bingo was played on the server itself. Thanks again to Zarvasace for putting together all of our lovely spreadsheets, to the mods for helping us run this event, and to all of you for coming!

Winner’s Circle (Top 5 Most Wordiest)

At 17,235 words, first place and “Writer of all Time” goes to @labyrinthdancer. Amazing job this month!

At 16,702 words, second place goes to @straight-outta-hobbiton. You did great!

At 14,026 words, third place and “Emerged from the Grave” goes to @aeghina, for going for such a high number after months without participating. You did amazing!

At 13,447 words, fourth place and “Horrible Friend (Affectionately)” goes to @tashacee, for taking advantage of the fact that other writers had fallen asleep to beat them this round of the LUWAT. A victory well earned
