My articles have discussed transition into retirement; how to pursue your dreams; how to react when confused or second guessing...

One’s path may vary to sitting on the front porch in your rocker shelling peas and drinking tea; taking a cruise; moving to the coast or traveling the world. Sometimes it may just be determining where you don’t want to be when you retire.

I’ve been that guy... the guy, when he was in his thirties and early forties who fell “in love” with every place he visited and would declare, “I wanna live here!” We would rent a house on the beach and I’d quickly determine, “we could live in a place like this, all 5 of us could do it . Ok...we’d hike in the Texas Hill Country with all of the beauty and historical and open minded communities, “this is where we need to live.” outrageouswecouldntaffordthe

It didn’t matter where we went I wanted to be there. The Blue Ridge Mountains, Granbury, Tx, Salado, each place was like a magnet and it pulled me there. When I got within 10 years of being able to retire, I arrived at several conclusions. One conclusion was I had more work years behind me than in front of me, so a big career change was out of the question. Teachers in texas are poorly paid, but their pension is stable. This presented me with no worries because I loved teaching, I was getting good at it. Another conclusion dealt with my willingness to be at any of the sites we’ve vacationed; I realized that it wasn’t so much the overwhelming allure of each of these fantastic locations, it was more so the growing disenchantment with the East Texas area where I have lived my life. This had snuck up on me.

My wife and I were born in East Texas and have lived here our whole lives. It wasn’t an intentional decision, looking back it seemed more of not having a choice. We had our first son just as we were starting our college education... and we were poor. Real poor. Broke, broke, broke. We worked multiple jobs and carried overloads of classes...choice didn’t exist. When we graduated, our son was five and we contemplated a move to Conroe, Texas. My wife and her siblings were absolutely devoted to their mother, but Kim was the only living near her. Conroe wasn’t gonna happen, “if mama ain’t happy no one is happy.” Before long, we had two more sons, a mortgage, my father had started a fifteen year battle with cancer, Kim’s father had passed away and her mother was alone and aging, and my mother’s health was beginning to fail. Obligations were now directing our paths...like so many others, we were left to care for the old folks.

Neither Kim nor I resented caring for the people we loved. What was happening was that while we may have been stuck here to some degree, the dreams and ideas and world views of a couple forced to grow up too early had not stopped growing. We were finding attraction to areas NOT East Texas, our views and beliefs were more often than not in disagreement with the community where we lived. Seeing and doing the same things in the same places was at first tedious and quickly becoming maddening. We had not acted on our free spirit inclinations when all our friends and brothers and sisters had when we were young. We were all settled in our forties, but the idea of staying here for the rest of our lives became an almost unbearable thought. The decision of our later years were upon us, in a much bigger way than simply deciding to retire. Was this a question of where we wanted to be or more of where we didn’t want to be?

Often in this column, Ive written over and over that each individual perceives their own happiness and what it looks like... and in this case where it is located. The overriding point to NOT ignore is to not settle; which is different than compromise. Unless you are swimming in cash or your partner is totally accommodating... there will be some level of compromise. “To settle,” in this case mean to refuse to move towards the decision of happiness. At this point you hopefully have more freedom than ever in your life, but there can be a very stark permanence in your choices as well. Beyond retirement, there aren’t as many “milestones” left to pursue. One thing you can’t be is indecisive. Is your picture of happiness to be found at your current homestead? Congratulations and enjoy it. Is your lifelong dream attached with a particular vista that has been that little secret smile over decades? Then go... pack up and be at that place. It may not be comfortable or easy to make the move, but “what might have been” is the heaviest yoke to carry. Allen is a city in Collin County, Texas, a northern suburb of Dallas. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a total population of 84,246.

The Allen area was previously home to the Caddo, Comanche, and other indigenous peoples. The first immigrants from the United States and Europe arrived in the early 1840s.[7] The town was established by the Houston and Central Texas Railroad and named in 1872 for Ebenezer Allen, a state politician and railroad promoter.[8] The railroad allowed sale of crops across the country before they rotted, causing a shift from the previous cattle-based agriculture.[9] On February 22, 1878,[7] a gang led by Sam Bass committed in Allen what is said to be Texas’s first train robbery.[8]

From 1908 through 1948, Allen was a stop along the Texas Traction Company’s interurban line from Denison to Dallas. Allen was a small town of a few hundred residents when it was incorporated in 1953.
