“Are you sure this is okay?” Chloe hesitates as she peels back the covers. 

“Yes.” His reply is soft, too soft. He’s been so different since coming back and it makes Chloe’s heart break to see him like this. Subdued, flinching, like a kicked dog. She swallows and puts one knee on the bed, leaning over him. 

“Do you want me to turn the lights off?”

“No,” he croaks, “If that’s all right.” His eyes are fixed ahead, fists clenched around black silk. The muscles in his forearms flex. 

“Okay,” she replies. She typically likes sleeping in darkness, but she can make an exception.  She slides beneath the cool sheets and watches his body slowly relax as the bed dips.

“It’s...it’s better when you’re here,” he admits. He reaches over, intertwines their fingers tightly. 

“Then I will be here,” she answers. “For as long as you need.” She brings their hands up and kisses his knuckles. He sighs a little, a small noise of content that she treasures. She turns their hold so she can place a soft kiss to the thin skin of his wrist, releases his fingers so she can press her mouth to his palm. A quick glance over reveals he is watching her with dark, wet eyes. She distributes the same attentions to each of his fingers, little butterfly touches of her lips. 

She knows these hands have done terrible things. Some of these terrible things had been done for her, to protect her. They’d been flaked with old blood and ash when he’d crawled his way back to earth. She runs her lips against his strange callouses. Piano playing, some of them. Others, perhaps from handling a sword. A ridge on the back of his ring finger from a pen. Many more she has no explanation or accounting of.

He moves his hand carefully from her grip to cradle her jaw, thumb swiping the line of her cheek. “Thank you,” he whispers.

She rolls a little to better face him. “You don’t have to thank me for this, Lucifer.”

“Even so,” he replies and smiles, a small tender thing. “You have it.” He shifts to slide his hands, his wondrous, perfect hands, over her ribs, up her back. His touch is warm and dry. 

She settles close to him, nuzzling the hollow at the base of his throat. Her own hands find rest, one curled up between them near his ribs, which expand with his slow breath, and the other in the space between his shoulder blades. With her face pressed to him, she finds herself in enough shadow to be able to fall asleep. She bestows a final kiss just below his collarbone, somewhere near to his heart, which beats steady and real and here beside her. 

“I love you,” she tells him, in the quiet press of their bodies. 

He holds her tighter. “And I love you, my dear.”

She drifts off into sleep, cradled in his embrace, between one heartbeat and the next.

7. Holding hands

They’re both in a parked car at a stakeout during the day, waiting for their suspect to make a move in a nearby house.

At one point previously, Lucifer would have been fidgeting or trying to fight off boredom after a while, even falling asleep as he had done one time in the Detective’s presence.

But after having returned from Hell, no task is too menial to do now when she is with him.

His hand sneaks across to entwine with her smaller one.

“We’re supposed to be concentrating,” Chloe says reprovingly, but there’s a slight smile on her face when he looks at her.

“This helps me concentrate. Studies have proved it,” Lucifer says immediately.

The Detective shakes her head but nevertheless squeezes his hand gently in return as they continue their waiting.

Apologies for the double post, but given some excellent feedback, I have simplified and clarified the rules. So I'm bringing it back to the top to make sure everyone notices. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Event Rules

Rules

1. Minimum word count is 5,000 (5k) words.

2. Artists are required to do at least one complete illustration.

3. Vesemir must be the main character, but it isn't required that he be the POV character. His POV or not, he must be the star of these fics.

4. All artists are welcome and no artist will be made to illustrate anything outside their comfort zone. If an artist finds none of the presented fics to be something they feel comfortable making art for, they may drop out of the bang with no penalties. If you want to sign up for multiple fics, you may, but that is strictly on a volunteer basis.

5. Any story, with no content restrictions, can be submitted. After sign-ups are complete, a summary form will be sent out. The summary submission form is requested to be no more than M rated even if the story will involve explicit sex or gore (tell not show, more info in the FAQ). Things you will be asked to include: expected fic content, including anything you'd particularly like your artist to know about the work and the types of art you are open to receive, expected tags and story length—to your best guess. (It is understood that you can't always predict every tag and story lengths can vary once the writing begins.) Artists will not be required to sign up for content or ratings outside of their comfort zone, so if a story is unable to be matched to any of the artists in the bang, the affected author will be offered the opportunity to submit a second story summary to improve matchability.

6. Fics are required to be beta read. If you have a beta you normally work with, you can feel free to use them for this event. If you do not have a beta you normally work with, one will be assigned to you. By signing up for this event you are acknowledging that you will be receiving feedback, suggested corrections, and overall suggestions that amount to constructive criticism.

7. Fics must be posted on AO3, with the artwork embedded, and added to the collection.

Unusual Notes

1. Depending on the numbers of sign-ups, assigned posting dates may be spread over a short period of time so we do not have more than 3-5 fics dropping on the same day. It's no fun to compete with your friends for space on the first page.

2. You will have a posting window assigned, during which, multi-chapter fics may be posted. This means long fics do not have to be posted as one long block.

Guidelines and more information

1. Artists and Authors are encouraged to discuss their works as they move forward.

Authors: the artists can't read your minds. Shoot them ideas. There is no expectation that all ideas must be taken by the artist, so it hurts nothing to present your wish list.

Artists: Don't be afraid to ask for clarifications, to set limits, to pick and choose which scene you produce.

2. Before the author/artist pairings have been announced, please keep full secrecy on your plans. The provided Artist and Writer categories are there for you to discuss your plans and share your works. After the pairings are made, the need for secrecy abates. Don't post finished works on social media or AO3 before the deadline, but you have permission to discuss your work in this server or others.

3. People who sign up for both artist and writer, unfortunately must be relegated to the barren wilderness until after the matches have been made.

4. Beta readers: You are the unicorns of fandom. If you are willing to beta more than one fic we will heap praises upon your head. Be kind, but be honest. Reading the entire thing and saying, "Looks great, I love this so much!" is not constructive criticism. "I hate this and you suck!" is obviously not kind.

She picks his shirt up off the ground on purpose. There’s something juvenile in the impulse, the cheerleader wearing the quarterback’s varsity jacket, but she doesn’t care. It smells like him, like his cologne. It’s something ridiculously expensive no doubt, but she enjoys the clean, spicy notes of it.

Lucifer is still sleeping, mouth parted, softly snoring. It’s the first real, full night of sleep he’s had in a while, if what Maze said was true. Chloe closes the first button, a few down from the top, and begins, one by one, fastening the shirt as she studies him. A slow smile makes its way across her face. With the sun starting to slant in through the window, he looks positively angelic. 

She searches out the overnight bag she’d brought and finishes getting dressed, heading to his bathroom to purloin his many hair products. She does her make-up, adding more than the usual touch of eyeliner, and puts her hair up. She tucks the long tails of the dress shirt into her jeans. She eyes the ends of the sleeves. The french style cuffs flap innocently back at her. 

It takes a little while for her to find the drawer where he keeps his cuff links, rows upon rows of metal trinkets glimmer back at her. Gold, she thinks, for some reason, discounting the cooler colored options. She finds a pair. Stars, inlaid with dark stone. The design is slightly more reminiscent of a sheriff's badge than a pentagram. She smiles and selects them, fastening her cuffs. When she glances at herself in the mirror, it’s fairly obvious the cut of her shirt is intended for a man, but there’s no denying she makes a striking figure. 

Chloe has no desire to wake Lucifer when she steps back into the bedroom. He has one hand sprawled out as if searching for her even in his sleep. Despite not wanting to rouse him, she also doesn’t want him to find himself alone. She leans over, one hand keeping the bullet on a chain pressed to her sternum so it doesn't swing out and hit him. A soft kiss to his cheek pulls him from slumber, eyelashes fluttering. There’s something ridiculously endearing about the sleepy grin stretching his mouth as he takes her in and, almost helplessly, peeks down where the collar of the shirt gapes open. 

“Good morning,” he rumbles, voice deliciously rough. He reaches for her with languid limbs, fingers curling just behind her knee. 

“Good morning,” she replies, bumping her nose against his, distracting him. “I’ve got to go into the station for a bit. No case, just paperwork. You can stay and rest.”

“Lunch?” he suggests. His thumb fiddles with the seam along the leg of her jeans. 

She kisses him, soft and sweet. “Lunch,” she confirms. His fingers tighten, briefly, and then loosen as she pulls away. She straightens and he gazes up at her.

“You’re wearing my shirt,” he says. An eyebrow raises, a play at being coy. “Looks good.”

“Go back to sleep,” she commands, terribly gentle. 

He smirks, eyes already closing, hands laced together on his chest. “Yes, ma’am.”

3. picnic

“This is nice,” Chloe says softly. Lucifer hums, a slow rumble of sound underneath her ear. She nuzzles in a little closer so that the edge of a button doesn’t press uncomfortably against her cheek. His skin is sun warmed and golden. His hand comes up to lazily stroke her bare arm. 

“It is.” His reply is soft, like the touch that drifts in spiraling patterns on the curve of her shoulder. For a long while she just muses, letting her mind drift where it will. Sometimes, it was moments like this, completely idle, thoughts wondering, that connections in cases were made. Today, though, her mind turns to the man beside her. 

A picnic at the beach had been his suggestion and he’d gone about it it typical Lucifer fashion. A large basket full of cheeses and fruit and bread, along with ridiculously nice champagne and, for her daughter, juice boxes. She informed him that, while american flag speedos were perfectly fine when it was the two of them, they were not appropriate beach attire for a family outing. He stared for a moment, croaked “Right.” with an expression Chloe couldn’t quite quantify, so quickly did he retreat back to his closet. She could have swore his eyes were a bit misty before he withdrew to change. He reappeared wearing a linen button up and dark, suitable, board shorts that easily met her requirements.

He’d held her hand as they walked to the beach, a surprisingly sweet and human gesture, letting go only to roll out their blankets and set up their shade umbrella.   

The basket of snacks is perfectly in arm’s reach, although the angle is a bit awkward as she curls up against Lucifer’s chest. She reaches in, pulls out a cluster of grapes, and pops one into her mouth, relishing in the crispness as she bites through the fruit’s skin. She reaches up and offers one to Lucifer, who takes it with just a bit too much teeth, nibbling at her fingers. They spend a few moments like that, slowly eating together, licking at sticky fingers, perfectly content.

“This was a good idea,” she adds, shifting a little bit so she can spy where Trixie splashes in the nearby waves.  

A curve of something mischievous pulls at the edge of his mouth. From her angle she can see his eyes are closed behind his sunglasses. 

“All my ideas are good ideas,” he replies, haughty as a king.

She pinches the vulnerable skin of his side where his undone shirt hangs open. He jolts, grip around her tightening in an effort to prevent her from attempting the move again. “Such violence, Detective!” he says with mock scandal. She’s eyeing the sand nearby and contemplating its offensive merit, just sneaking her hand into the warm granules when Lucifer deftly rolls them on their blanket, pinning her with his weight. 

She squirms a little, partially to to test how well he’s restrained her and also to rile him up a bit. He growls playfully, flashes his eyes at her when she gets an arm free and pulls his sunglasses off. She tosses them aside and leans up to kiss him properly, grinning a little as she slides sandy fingers into his hair.
