Racing for Time 4

Synopsis: Maisie is haunted by dreams of a red eyed man. Four kidnappings occur- courtesy of Team Ever. Marigold and Zayne meet each other in a smashing way.

   Wind sways through the forest and the nearby creek babbles as Maisie walks alongside it. Vulpix is happily trotting alongside her and hopping on stray pieces of grass or fluff circling through the air. 

 Her nightmares have only seemed to grow in size over the last week- she ended up sleeping on Caleb’s floor and then Zayne’s (Zayne insisted she just climb into bed with him and so they slept with their backs turned to each other). Turtwig refused to move over and the Pokémon’s possessiveness over Caleb has grown over the last week. She pinched Caleb’s nose the other day when he was being a turd and Turtwig headbutted her shin. 

 It’s a bummer- she could really use his input on her bizarre dreams. Zayne is a very logical person so she doesn’t necessarily think he will feel like her dreams carry any weight- merely manifestations of stress. 

 The dreams are becoming more vivid- there are more eyes and faces, storms, and cries and screams from sources she can barely identify. Frozen Pokemon, terrified people, a dying world, and it ends the same way- she’s being interrogated, hit, electrocuted- before someone with red eyes pulls her from the table, dragging her through the halls. It stops the moment the red eyed person pushes her into a portal, but he is grabbed before he can join her.

 It breaks her heart- it hurts- and she wakes up feeling like she can’t breathe. It’s the feeling of something or someone being physically ripped away from her and the more she strains for a morsel of more information, she ends up giving herself a headache. 

 “Vulpix?”

 She hadn’t realized she was crying until Vulpix was looking up at her with concern- her little brown eyes so wide and sincere. Maisie really loves Vulpix- she’s been a wonderful companion and she lets her talk about her dreams.

 “I wish I knew who that man is,” she sighs, picking up Vulpix in her arms and walking towards the lab again, “it would be nice to not feel so… hollowed out.” 

 This feeling had always kind of been there, but now that she is certain she may be back in her initial timeline, the feeling is only larger, more consuming. 

 “Maisie!”

 She turns and sees Lumina smiling and running towards her- Xavier trailing behind her with Ampharos. She smiles and begins to walk towards her friends. Hypothetically, this should be a short, easy walk to meet them. In another world they may have even talked or walked back home together. Fate, unfortunately, had other plans.

 One moment Maisie is awake and the next she isn’t.

 Echoing footsteps and shouts disturb the peace of the northern forest surrounding the tiny town the girl with her wild green hair grew up in. 

 Marigold Liu Song has always been too big for this world and the town of Jasmine Valley, and yet, she remains loyal to the lab that raised her. Dr.Noah is her mentor and her grandfather- she is his most trusted research assistant and she takes this very seriously. 

 Maybe a little too seriously. 

 Mari will always prefer to be running around a lab than running through a forest of Ever Grunts who are trying to tackle her. However, people don’t often get to pick their lot in life and well- Arceus has certainly kept Mari on her toes. 

 Cubone clings to her from his spot in her backpack. Why he is so devoted to his trainer is a mystery to even Dr.Noah. Most of the time it seems like Marigold brings nothing but a storm of trouble with her, but Cubone will always be there to watch her back. 

 It was a risky decision- a last minute one that she probably should have planned out better and brought more than just a Cubone and Slowbro for, but it was worth it! She managed to sneak through Ever’s lab, copy their research over from their internal drive- even the Linkon lab data- and now she knows everything they are planning. 

 Granted- they don’t know that. She wasn’t born yesterday and she knows how to buy a tried and true hard drive that would remain unrecognizable. It would horrify her grandfather that she has a contact for such equipment, but she doesn’t need him knowing she’s been communicating with the rebel group, Onychinus, in hopes of putting an end to Ever.

  The Jenny’s and the police division won’t act against Ever because they have no reason to. They want “proof”, but Onychinus wants answers and she is agreeable with their methods.

  Her grandfather thinks it’s safest if she stays away from the action but action has a tendency to find her.

 Hence the wild, impromptu game of tag through the woods. 

 Mari has never run quite so hard in her whole life- jumping over branches, dodging leaves- it all feels effortless for her. 

 It occurs to her that she knows of a short cut up ahead- it’s through a few questionable rock structures and requires a quick leap across a relatively wide river, but it will probably be fine.

 Right? 

 Boots skids along dirt as she makes a last minute turn- praying to Arceus that they don’t see her spearmint colored hair like a beacon as she makes her descent into the rocky pathway.

“Cu-CUBONE!”

 She glances behind her and-

 Uh oh.

 The Grunts are still hot on her trail and don’t seem to be getting off it anytime soon. If she’s caught, she’ll surely be experimented on and Slowbro and Cubone will be put down. She can’t allow that to happen.  

 “C-cu-Cubone!” She says through gasps, “hit the rocks as I run by!” 

 Screams from behind her and the sound of rocks rolling assure her that she was able to cut off her pursuers. She laughs wildly, her legs never faltering- she can see the lab in the distance and-

 CRASH!

 Mari collides with a tall figure with a head of jet black hair- he is quite tall and well, so is Mari at a whole 5 '8 so you can imagine it was a pretty uncomfortable fall for both of them. However, this does not prevent her from jumping up to her feet and assuming a fighting position.

“I swear- one step closer and I’ll clock you!”

“Cu! Cubone!” the pokemon jumps alongside her, bone club in hand, “Cubone!”

“Yeah!” she exclaims, “or he will!”

   Her suspicious gaze is met with dazed, hazel eyes that make her heart stop for a moment. He blinks a few times at her- obviously still in a state of shock from their fall. Mari sometimes forgets that not everyone is running on adrenaline (or anxiety, depending on who you ask) 99 percent of the time. 

 He certainly isn’t an Ever grunt- at least not from what she can see. He’s actually pretty good looking and he seems like he would hurt her more with words than his fists so she will take that as a win (and needs to get ahead of it).

“Oh geez,” she says awkwardly, helping him up while Cubone looks at them as if he’s been betrayed, “Sorry bout that!”

 He smiles with only a slight huff of annoyance, “I’m certainly more awake now.”

“Yeah, being crashed into will do that to ya.”

 They just kind of stand there for a moment- he looks entirely perplexed by her and- oh shoot, she didn’t introduce herself! That’s why!

“Marigold Liu Song at your service,” she takes his hand and kisses the back of it, “but you can call me Mari!”

 His ears are a bright, pink shade and goodness- he certainly is attractive. Mari really hopes that he isn’t with Team Ever. That would be an extremely unfortunate turn of events. 

“Zayne,” his brows furrow, “are you with Team Ever?”

“That depends,” she narrows her eyes, “are you?”

 He looks her up and down- analyzing her before saying.

“No- I’m not.”

“Phew! It would be a shame if I had to kill you- being as cute as you are and all.”

 And her filter decided to go on a vacation. This poor man looks like he’s going into shock and she feels like she’s about to die of embarrassment. 

 A crash from their right distracts them both from the awkwardness of the interaction- they look at eachother, a silent communication of sorts occurring, before racing in the direction of the crash.

 “ZAYNE!” a masculine voice echoes through the forest, “MAISIE!”

 They keep running until they come across the most bizarre sight they have ever seen.

 A woman is in a net- her silver hair shimmering under the few sun rays peeking through the leaves. Her one pink eye and other a darker grey are fueled with anger and her badge-

 Team Ever!

 “Maisie?” the purple eyed stranger looks at her in confusion, “when did you change your hair and eyes? And why wasn’t I informed we were taking on new identities?”

 The heavy sigh from Zayne helps her to feel safe in this other guy’s presence. Guys with traps and women in them are very very rarely a good sign. 

“Mari, Caleb, Caleb, Mari.”

“Oh- yeah, that makes more sense,” Caleb smiles at her brightly, “it’s nice to meet you. 

“Zayne- you suck,” Caleb scoffs, “I was trying to get your help for several minutes now!”

“There was traffic,” Zayne responds plainly, “and it seems you were able to protect yourself well enough.”

“Yeah, but that doesn’t change the fact that a psychotic pokemon killer was running behind me!”

“May I remind you that this ‘psychotic pokemon killer’ can hear you,” the mystery woman says, “and when I get down from here-”

“Yeah yeah short stacks, you’ll make me regret tricking you into your own trap,” Caleb mocks her, “she’s been hung up on that for the last three minutes or so.”

“How long were you running from her?” Mari asks.

“A long time,” Caleb shakes his head, some sweat flinging from the mop of hair, “too long, to be entirely honest.”

 Mari shrugs- fair enough. It’s impressive at least, she’s one of the only people she knows that can do long distance running. If these people are here to stay- maybe they are even here to help. It would be nice to have support to fight Ever and maybe if they had actual back up, Xavier would finally agree to go storming the castle.

“We should take her back to the lab,” Zayne suggests, “she has an Ever emblem and maybe we can get information from her.”

“Again- I CAN HEAR YOU!” she looks like she is going to have an aneurysm, “and as if I would ever tell the likes of you anything.”

 Caleb goes to say something, but a loud boom interrupts all of their trains of thoughts and the woman laughs.

“Ha! Doesn’t matter anyway- your friends are toast!”

 Mari leers at her while Zayne seems to come to life alongside Caleb- both of them working to drop the woman to the forest floor. They manage to get her cuffs on her and pull her up right- she tries to kick and scream, but it’s no use because Mari joins in and holds her feet down.

“Let me go!”

“Not until you take us to Maisie.”

 Maisie? Who the hell is Maisie?

“The obnoxious cotton candy pink haired girl?” she scoffs, “you might as well accept she’s gone.”

 Caleb jerks the woman towards the direction of the lab- his Turtwig nipping at her heels whenever she tries to struggle.

“Zayne- take Mari and go search for Maisie. I’ll take our mediocre villain over here back to the lab.”

 Before the woman can say anything- Caleb has Turtwig use sleep on her, knocking her out cold.

“Aw,” Mari sighs, “they always look so much kinder when they aren’t running their mouths.”

 Zayne snorts- which kind of feels like a win in her book, before the duo sets off together on a potential rescue mission. 

“Wait- do you have a pokemon?” she stops in her tracks, “we may end up having to fight and-”

 He interrupts her by holding up a pokeball with a rye smile.

“Good,” she nods approvingly, “I didn’t want to have to carry you.”

 He rolls his eyes, but still follows alongside her quietly. If she wasn’t so focused on saving whoever these people are, she may have felt the need to fill the silence. It’s a bit unsettling if she’s being honest, but she supposes Xavier is pretty quiet to and speaking of which that figure on the ground looks an awful lot like-

“Xavier!” Marigold cries out when she sees her friend and his pokemon out cold on the ground, “Xavier!”

 Zayne tries to grab her away in case there is a trap up ahead, but Mari is much faster than he is and far more worried about getting to Xavier.

  Mari doesn’t feel herself breathe again until she is able to feel his red cardigan under her hands- she pushes aside his blonde hair, she sighs in relief when he stirs. Probably just a sleeping powder of sorts.

 Mari begins to search her bag- completely unaware of Zayne panicking as he looks around the field and sees Vulpix, but no sign of Maisie- which is definitely not like Vulpix. Vulpix goes everywhere with Maisie these days. 

 The moment Mari manages to wake Xavier up, he shoots upward like a rocket.

“Lumina?!” he screams, “LUMINA!?” 

 No, Mari feels the world around her stop, they wouldn’t. Kidnapping- that’s just- that’s unthinkable!

  But Mari is a woman of science and she can’t ignore what’s in front of her.

 Lumina is gone, this ‘Maisie’ is nowhere to be found, and Team Ever is why.

The Evolution Championship Series is back. For the first time since 2019 EVO is offline at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. For 20 years, EVO has served as the Super Bowl of fighting games. It is a three day event which started yesterday at 1pm est.

EVO is a double-elimination tournament. A double-elimination tournament is a type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost two games or matches. Most fighting game tournaments, in particular, the ones that attract professional fighting game players, are double-elimination tournaments.

The official tournament list of games being played goes as followed: "Melty Blood: Type Lumina," "The King of Fighters XV," "Guilty Gear - Strive," "Granblue Fantasy: Versus," "Skullgirls: 2nd Encore," "Street Fighter V: Champion Edition," "Tekken 7," "Dragon Ball FighterZ," and "Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate." However, while viewing the semi-finals which had the remaining 24 players compete to decide today's Top 8, a man who only commentates NetherRealm Studios games with the Gamertag Mr. Aquaman was awarded his fourth place medal for competing in "Mortal Kombat X." So even though the official tournament list has nine games, there are other games being played for EVO medals.

The three games I am interested in the most are SFV, "Tekken 7," and MK11. Even though the idea of playing the latter makes me sick to my stomach. It's been well over a year since I played MK11 on a regular basis. It was just a couple of months ago I could watch MK11 online tournaments without getting sick. There was a point where I could watch a tournament until someone began to use the character Liu Kang, and I would, in a sense, play along with them in my head, going through what they should do in certain situations, and what I would've done if an opponent did those things to me. Whether I determined the player should have punished or I would have been hit, just going through the motions in my head made me ill. I may have played that game too much.

Despite there being no announcement for any future NRS games planned for today, I'm still excited about today's MK11 Top 8. It is exciting to see NRS competition become more international. NRS games have been dominated by North American players, and out of the NA players, my fellow Americans are the most dominant out of that group.

A double-elimination tournament has two sides of the bracket called the Winner's bracket and the Loser's bracket. Each team or player begins in the Winner's bracket, but once they lose, they move to the Loser's bracket, where they still have an opportunity to make it to the championship.

Although some players decide to use their real names for competition (i.e. Justin Wong), most players use Gamertag. When a player is sponsored by a team, the team name is listed first followed behind their Gamertag. Today's Winner's Top 8 will have Chile's T7G Nicolas vs. USA's EG SonicFox and USA's Rewind vs. Chile's T7G Scorpionprocs. Nicolas and Scorpionprocs are twins. These Chilean brothers finished first and second at this year's Combo Breaker tournament in MK11 (Nicolas 1st place; Scorpionprocs 2nd place). Loser's side Top 8 will have USA's Han Rashid vs. Brazil's Venom KillerXinok and USA's CGL King gambler vs. Great Britain's A Foxy Grampa (I believe A Foxy Grampa is approximately 30).

Top 8 for MK11 as well as the continuation of Pools for SFV and "Tekken 7" will start today at 1pm est. The latter two games will be played throughout the day until both games can a Top 8 for tomorrow. Nothing is perfect, and there are parts of the Fighting Game Community that has serious flaws, but I love the FGC.
