S’pose I should introduce myself proper:
‘M the Sniper of Builder’s League United. Miss Pauling told me to make a “Tumbler” Tumblr account an’ answer questions like the rest a’ the team. Somethin’ ‘bout public relations. Ask me questions if ya like.
Tag Guide
#marksman answers: Answering asks
#marksman mumbles: Not asks. Usually convos with the other roleplay blogs.
#ooc: “Out of character.” This is the real human behind the account talking, not Sniper.

What’s in store for 2025?
I haven’t posted a blog here in a long time, but I was inspired by my friend Paul Rubio (which you can check out his blogs at paulrubio.blogspot.com) when he writes his 12 Grapes of Anticipation in the beginning of each year (here is the link to this year’s http://paulrubio.blogspot.com/2025/01/grapes-of-anticipation-2025.html?m=1).
I will follow suit with my own 12 items.
There are opportunities for my wife Rogenique and I to grow in the Young Adult ministry at Breakthrough as well as another opportunity for me to help with a Bible study hosted by our friend Jhonatan. We look forward in the continuance of preaching the Word of God and spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
2. This will be a very focused year where we have some financial responsibilities that need to be fulfilled to better prepare for our future.
3. A friend of mine is having a baby in May, and we are very excited for him and his wife to give birth and have their blessing in their arms.
4. Another friend of mine Matt will be starting his manager training this year at various National Parks which would give him a great opportunity to grow in his career as well as to continue growing in his faith in Christ which he is an inspiration to many people including myself.
5. We have several friends that gave birth to children on the previous year which I will ask the Lord to bless them in their journey of parenthood.
6. My wife is going to graduate in the fall with her Bachelor’s degree which we anticipate to go to Phoenix, AZ to attend the commencement.
7. Continue to serve our local community with the Gospel message and providing for their needs.
8. Continue to grow in interest with missions which not only includes overseas like Uruguay but also locally too. This ties with number 7.
9. Doing more hikes. Southern California has a ton of hikes, so it’s best to take advantage of this. My friend Matt has done hundreds of miles of hikes in the past year which is inspiring to me. Hopefully these hikes help with my weight loss!
10. Watching my daughter Rhema grow up to be a strong, beautiful girl. Perhaps mommy and daddy will take her to a few hikes. Nothing too crazy though!
11. Continuing growing my career. Last year, I moved to our consulting team which I’ve learned a lot about different tech and working with customers. I aim to learn more about Typescript to help with migrating our customers from WebAppbuilder to Experience Builder. I also hope to learn more about tech leadership.
12. Be more intentional with mentorship. Rogenique and I watched The Forge recently, and it inspired me to mentor younger believers to grow in their faith in Christ and teach them to multiply by disciple-ing overs as well. This was always in my heart to do since I gave my life to Christ in March 2006. I know how beneficial it was to see discipleship in action for myself, and I want to replicate that.
Thanks again Paul for the idea! Perhaps I should make this an annual thing. I also want to get my moneys worth in Tumblr so might as well use it before it gets shut down for lack of users lol!

In deeply learned books, the medieval historian Mary Carruthers argues that in medieval monastic culture, contemplative prayer was primarily understood as a process of crafting thought. In this culture, she says, memory was understood not as a mirror of the past, or as a record of what has happened, but as a tool to make real what God desired.
In his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul compared himself to a “wise master builder.” In medieval monasticism, this phrase would become the dominant representation for understanding what prayer did. Mental images were the building blocks. The thinker, the one who prayed, was the mason who set the stones in place to create a building in which God could dwell.
Recall that in the medieval world, one did not snuggle into the corner with one’s own beloved Bible. Texts were all important, but printing had not yet made it possible to own them individually. Books were manuscripts, rare and shared. Reading aloud was commonplace. One was explicitly expected to make a mental representation to remember what had been read.
Mental images were understood as the means to take in what was perceived through the senses and to shape and store that awareness in the mind. Those mental images determined what one remembered and how one remembered it. And unlike a modern psychology that imagines such mental images as unchosen and epiphenomenal, flitting through the mind like formless moths, monastic psychology treated images as chosen and substantial, as acting on the person and upon the world with power.
The monastics set out to teach themselves to use their mental images like instruments. Augustine spoke of “painting in the heart.” Those who listened to scripture were expected to “paint” in their mind’s eye, as the fifth-century monk Arnobius invites his audience to do when contemplating Psalm 98, vague but glorious: “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.” Arnobius advises:
Paint, paint before your eyes the various fabricated things, whenever you chant of these [while reciting the verses of the psalm]. Of what sort? Those which were seen with wonder by the apostles [chiefly John]: paint the temples, paint the baths, paint the forums and the ramparts rising on the high summit.
Many of these medieval instructional texts presented scripture in highly visualizable language, and their readers—or more likely, listeners—moved from scene to scene and picture to picture as they progressed. Those pictures were meant to become part of their memory and thus their means to think and act; thus their character, who they were. This was an Augustinian psychology. In his Confessions, Augustine remarks: “Inside me, in the vast cloisters of my memory, are the sky, the earth, and the sea, ready at my summons, together with everything I have ever perceived in them by my senses.”

Saints&Reading: Fri., Jan., 24, 2020
Venerable Xenia of Rome
Tumblr media
Saint Xenia of Rome, in the world Eusebia, was the only daughter of an eminent Roman senator. From her youth she loved God, and wished to avoid the marriage arranged for her. She secretly left her parental home with two servants devoted to her, and set sail upon a ship. Through the Providence of God she met the head of the monastery of the holy Apostle Andrew in Milassa, a town of Caria (Asia Minor). She besought him to take her and her companions to Milassa. She also changed her name, calling herself Xenia [which means “stranger” or “foreigner” in Greek].
At Milassa she bought land, built a church dedicated to Saint Stephen, and founded a woman’s monastery. Soon after this, Bishop Paul of Milassa made Xenia a deaconess, because of her virtuous life. The saint helped everyone: for the destitute, she was a benefactress; for the grief-stricken, a comforter; for sinners, a guide to repentance. She possessed a deep humility, accounting herself the worst and most sinful of all.
In her ascetic deeds she was guided by the counsels of the Palestinian ascetic, Saint Euthymius. The sublime life of Saint Xenia drew many souls to Christ. The holy virgin died in 450 while she was praying. During her funeral, a luminous wreath of stars surrounding a radiant cross appeared over the monastery in the heavens. This sign accompanied the body of the saint when it was carried into the city, and remained until the saint’s burial. Many of the sick received healing after touching the relics of the saint.
Following the death of Saint Xenia, first one of her former servants died, then the other. They were buried at the saint’s feet.

Martyr Babylas of Sicily
The Holy Martyrs Babylas of Sicily and his two disciples Timothy and Agapius lived during the third century on the outskirts of Rome. Saint Babylas was born in the city of Reupolium into a rich family, and he was raised by his parents in the Christian Faith.
While still in his youth he abandoned the world, secretly going from the house of his parents to a mountain, where he spent all his time in fasting, prayer and silence. His two disciples, Timothy and Agapius, labored with him. Fleeing a persecution by the pagans, he went with his disciples to the island of Sicily, where they converted many unbelievers to Christ.
The governor of the island, angered by the missionary activity of Saint Babylas, ordered that he and his disciples be arrested, and he also had them tortured. The saints patiently endured their sufferings, and all three died by the sword. Their bodies were thrown into a fire, but the flames did not harm the warriors of Christ. They were buried on the island of Sicily by local Christians.

Blessed Xenia of St Petersburg
Tumblr media
Saint Xenia lived during the eighteenth century, but little is known of her life or of her family. She passed most of her life in Petersburg during the reigns of the empresses Elizabeth and Catherine II.
Xenia Grigorievna Petrova was the wife of an army officer, Major Andrew Petrov. After the wedding, the couple lived in Saint Petersburg. Saint Xenia became a widow at the age of twenty-six when her husband suddenly died at a party. She grieved for the loss of her husband, and especially because he died without Confession or Holy Communion.
Once her earthly happiness ended, she did not look for it again. From that time forward, Xenia lost interest in the things of this world, and followed the difficult path of foolishness for the sake of Christ. The basis for this strange way of life is to be found in the first Epistle to the Corinthians (1 Cor. 1:18-24, 1 Cor. 2:14, 1 Cor. 3:18-19). The Lord strengthened her and helped her to bear sorrow and misfortune patiently for the next forty-five years...keep reading
1 Peter 1:1-2 NKJV 2:6-10
Greeting to the Elect Pilgrims
1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
To the [a]pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace be multiplied.
Footnotes:
1 Peter 1:1 sojourners, temporary residents
1 Peter 1:10-12 (NKJV)
10 Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, 11 searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. 12 To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to [a]us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.
Footnotes:
1 Peter 1:12 NU, M you
1 Peter 2:6-10 (NKJV)
6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,
“Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.”
7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who [a]are disobedient,
“The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone,”
8 and
“A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense.”
They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

Norman Stewart House
AKA, Stewart-Lee House
707 East Franklin Street
Built 1844
VDHR 127-0064
Tumblr media
February 2020
The General’s pad. You know… him.
Tumblr media
[Library of Virginia] — [MCR] — showing position of the Norman Stewart House at the edge of the Burnt District
In early time the whole square bounded by Seventh, Eighth, Franklin, and Main Streets was occupied by the home of Archibald Blair, Secretary of the Council of State. The garden was adorned with trees and shrubbery and a pond, fed by a spring. After Blair’s death the property was divided into lots, most of those on Franklin Street being sold to Norman Stewart who erected five brick houses there, known as Stewart’s Row.
Tumblr media
February 2020
Norman Stewart, first of that family to emigrate from Rothesay in Scotland to Virginia, had come out before 1806 and engaged in the business of buying and selling leaf tobacco. His nephews John and Daniel Stewart later joined him in Richmond. Norman Stewart remained a bachelor and lived in this house after building it in 1844, renting the others in the row.
Tumblr media
[IEAHS] — Brook Hill
His great-nephew gives an amusing picture of the younger members of the family stopping after service at St. Paul’s, before the long drive to “Brook Hill,” to have a glass of sherry and some stale sponge-cake with their uncle; of the latter’s vanity in concealing his red hair under a brown wig; and of his true Scotch thrift in having his servant unravel his old stockings to darn his new ones!
Tumblr media
(Find A Grave) — The General’s son, General George Washington Custis Lee
At his death in 1856 Norman Stewart left this house to his nephew John. During the Civil War Mr. Stewart rented it to General Custis Lee and some brother-officers, and in 1864-65 Lee’s mother and sisters occupied it, so that it was General Robert E. Lee’s home during his brief stays in Richmond. Mrs. Chesnut describes the life there at this time:
Tumblr media
(Find A Grave) — a very young Mary Custis Lee
Then we paid our respects to Mrs. Lee. Her room is like an industrial school: everybody so busy. Her daughters were all there plying their needles, with several other ladies. When we came out someone said, “Did you see how the Lees spend their time? What a rebuke to the taffy parties.”
Tumblr media
(Awesome Stories) — General Robert E. Lee aboard Traveller
After the Surrender, Lee rode to Richmond on Traveller. His son Robert writes:
On April 15th he arrived in Richmond. The people there soon recognized him; men, women and children crowded around him cheering and waving hats and handkerchiefs. It was more like the welcome to a conqueror than to a despised prisoner on parole. He raised his hat in response to their greetings and rode quietly to his home on Franklin Street, where my mother and sisters were anxiously awaiting him.
Tumblr media
(Digital Commonwealth) — postcard of The General’s final resting place in the Chapel of Washington & Lee University
But General Lee found life in Richmond with the constant stream of callers too exhausting and in the latter part of June, 1865 moved his family to the country. Thence they moved to Lexington, after his call to be president of Washington College. His actual residence in the Stewart house was thus slightly over two months. When he tried to pay Mr. John Stewart rent, the latter wrote him that “the payment must be in Confederate currency, for which alone it was rented to your son.”

Later, the house was rented to judge Anthony M. Keiley, who lived there while he was Mayor of Richmond, 1871-76. Judge Keiley figured in an international incident, the Italian government indicating that he was persona non grata, when he was named ambassador, because he had taken a prominent part in a meeting of Richmond Roman Catholics who had protested the Pope’s being deprived of his temporal power.
Tumblr media
(Rocket Werks RVA Postcards)
In 1879 the Westmoreland Club, which had been founded two years earlier, occupied the Stewart house. During the ’eighties it was the home of William O. English and Robert N. Gordon. Mr. English had married Miss Jessie Gordon, head of one of the many well-known schools for girls.
Tumblr media
February 2020 — showing rear portico
The school had been in existence since 1855 and during the ’eighties occupied this house. The Stewart family continued, evidently, to feel as John Stewart had when he wrote General Lee, refusing to accept rent: You do not know how much gratification it is, and will afford me and my whole family during the remainder of our lives, to reflect that we have been brought into contact, and to know and to appreciate you and all that are dear to you.
Tumblr media
[HOR] — showing the original location of the Virginia Historical Society
In 1893 Mrs. Stewart and her daughters gave the house, forever associated with General Lee’s brief stay in Richmond, to the Virginia Historical Society, to be the headquarters of that organization. Although the interest of the house is largely its connection with the Lees and with the Stewart family, which has meant much to Richmond, it is worth study architecturally as a good example of a Greek Revival house of the three-story, “shoe-box” type.
Tumblr media
(VDHR) — 1972 nomination photo
Among dozens of houses of this plan, many of them still standing, this is the only one in excellent condition or likely to he preserved. That it is good of its sort is evident from a comparison with the Maury house, for example. One can easily see that the Stewart-Lee house is far better proportioned and much more pleasing in detail.
Tumblr media
February 2020 — showing detail of pineapple fence posts
The handsome iron fence with pineapple posts is identical, except for the gate, with that of the Barret house, built in the same year. Unfortunately the appearance of the house is greatly injured at present by a large gasoline advertisement which masks the doorway when it is approached from the east. [HOR]
Renovated in 2001 by the Home Builders Association of Virginia, it served as their offices for a while, but they have since relocated to 1051 East Cary, and the building is available for lease.
Tumblr media
February 2020
General Lee cribbed here and there’s no escaping it. On the one hand, that’s great. This sole remaining structure of the original Stewart’s Row survives because he lived here, and you would have few other references to indicate that this portion of Franklin Street was once a residential neighborhood.  And… yeh, he was extraordinarily skillful and a key figure in one of the defining moments of the nation’s history.
But it was him and slavery and Jim Crow and all the rest of the muck that comes with the stain of the Confederate cause. Preserve it? Absolutely. Forget? Not a chance.

TMI Thursday.
Here’s entirely too much information:
Guano (from Spanish guano, from Quechua: wanu) is the accumulated excrement of seabirds and bats. As a manure, guano is a highly effective fertilizer due to its exceptionally high content of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium: nutrients essential for plant growth. Guano was also, to a lesser extent, sought for the production of gunpowder and other explosive materials. The 19th-century guano trade played a pivotal role in the development of modern input-intensive farming, but its demand began to decline after the discovery of the Haber-Bosch process of nitrogen fixing led to the production of synthetic fertilizers. The demand for guano spurred the human colonization of remote bird islands in many parts of the world. During the 20th century, guano-producing birds became an important target of conservation programs and influenced the development of environmental consciousness. Today, guano is increasingly sought after by organic farmers.[1]

Paul Szpak has co-authored several journal articles claiming that seabird guano consists of nitrogen-rich ammonium nitrate and urate, phosphates, as well as some earth salts and impurities, and that unleached guano from favored locales, such as the Chincha Islandsoff the coast of Peru, typically contains 8 to 16 percent nitrogen (the majority of which is uric acid), 8 to 12 percent equivalent phosphoric acid, and 2 to 3 percent equivalent potash.[2][3]
However, The Association of American Plant Food Control Officers (AAPFCO) defines Seabird guano as the hardened excrement from marine birds, which contains no organic matter or nitrogen and is a source of phosphates P2O5: "P- Hydroxylapatite - is a naturally-formed phosphate rock mineral with the formula Ca5(PO4)3(OH). The Fluorine content is less than 1%."[4]
Bat guano is fecal excrement from bats. Commercially harvested bat guano is used as an organic fertilizer.[5][6] All commercially sold bat guano is derived from insect-eating bats.[7]A study was done that demonstrated that, for fruit bats and insect bats, the composition of their guano was largely the same, and differed mainly based on their diet.[8]

The word "guano" originates from the Andean indigenous language Quechua, which refers to any form of dung used as an agricultural fertilizer. Archaeological evidence suggests that Andean people have collected guano from small islands and points located off the desert coast of Peru for use as a soil amendment for well over 1,500 years. Spanish colonial documents suggest that the rulers of the Inca Empire assigned great value to guano, restricted access to it, and punished any disturbance of the birds with death. The Guanay cormorant has historically been the most abundant and important producer of guano. Other important guano producing species off the coast of Peru are the Peruvian pelican and the Peruvian booby.[1][3]
In November 1802, Alexander von Humboldt first encountered guano and began investigating its fertilizing properties at Callao in Peru, and his subsequent writings on this topic made the subject well known in Europe. During the guano boom of the nineteenth century, the vast majority of seabird guano was harvested from Peruvian guano islands, but large quantities were also exported from the Caribbean, atolls in the Central Pacific, and islands off the coast of Namibia, Oman, Patagonia, and Baja California. At that time, massive deposits of guano existed on some islands, in some cases more than 50 m deep.[9] In this context the United States passed the Guano Islands Act in 1856, which gave U.S. citizens discovering a source of guano on an unclaimed island exclusive rights to the deposits. Nine of these islands are still officially U.S. territories.[10] Control over guano played a central role in the Chincha Islands War (1864–1866) between Spain and a Peruvian-Chilean alliance. Indentured workers from China played an important role in guano harvest. The first group of 79 Chinese workers arrived in Peru in 1849; by the time that trade ended a quarter of a century later, over 100,000 of their fellow countrymen had been imported. There is no documentary evidence that enslaved Pacific Islanders participated in guano mining.[11] Between 1847 and 1873, there was a significant increase in Peruvian guano exports, and the revenue from this momentarily ended the fiscal necessity of the colonial head tax.[12]
After 1870, the use of Peruvian guano as a fertilizer was eclipsed by saltpeter in the form of caliche extraction from the interior of the Atacama Desert, not far from the guano areas. During the War of the Pacific (1879–1883) Chile seized much of the guano as well as Peru's nitrate-producing area, enabling its national treasury to grow by 900% between 1879 and 1902 thanks to taxes coming from the newly acquired lands.[13] Contrary to popular belief, seabird guano does not have high concentrations of nitrates, and was never important to the production of explosives; bat and cave-bird deposits have been processed to produce gunpowder, however. High-grade rock phosphate deposits are derived from the remobilization of phosphate from bird guano into underlying rocks such as limestone.[14] In 1990 a group of French researchers, from isotope studies, proposed a marine sedimentation origin for some high-grade phosphate deposits on Nauru.[15][16]
Since 1909, when the Peruvian government took over guano extraction for use by Peru farmers, the industry has relied on production by living populations of marine birds. U.S. ornithologists Robert Cushman Murphy and William Vogt promoted the Peruvian industry internationally as a supreme example of wildlife conservation, while also drawing attention to its vulnerability to the El Niño phenomenon. South Africa independently developed its own guano industry based on sustained-yield production from marine birds during this period, as well. Both industries eventually collapsed due to pressure from overfishing.[1]The importance of guano deposits to agriculture elsewhere in the world faded after 1909 when Fritz Haber developed the Haber-Bosch process of industrial nitrogen fixation, which today generates the ammonia-based fertilizer responsible for sustaining an estimated one-third of the Earth's population.[17]
DNA testing has suggested that new potato varieties imported alongside Peruvian seabird guano in 1842 brought a virulent strain of potato blight that began the Irish Potato Famine.[18][19]

The ideal type of guano is found in exceptionally dry climates, as rainwater volatilizes and leaches nitrogen-containing ammonia from guano. In order to support large colonies of marine birds and the fish they feed on, these islands must be adjacent to regions of intense marine upwelling, such as those along the eastern boundaries of the Pacific and South Atlantic Oceans.[9]
Bat guano is usually mined in caves and this mining is associated with a corresponding loss of troglobytic biota and diminishing of biodiversity. Guano deposits support a great variety of cave-adapted invertebrates, that rely on bat feces as their sole source of nutrition. In addition to the biological component, deep guano deposits from birds and bats contain local paleoclimatic records and evidence of other environmental changes in strata that have built up over thousands of years, which are unrecoverable once disturbed.[20]However, when done with caution, extraction of guano can be done alongside marine bird colonies without causing them significant harm.[21][22]
Post-depositional decomposition and ammonia volatilization of penguin guano also plays an important role in the evolution of ornithogenic sediments in the cold and arid environment of Antarctica (McMurdo Sound of the Ross Sea region, East Antarctica).[23]
Properties[edit]
In agriculture and gardening guano has a number of uses, including as: soil builder, lawn treatments, fungicide (when fed to plants through the leaves), nematicide (decomposing microbes help control nematodes), and as composting activator (nutrients and microbes speed up decomposition).[24]
High in nitrogen, guano was also refined in the early 20th century into a precursor to explosives. This caused guano islands to be of strategic significance before the First World War.
In popular culture[edit]
"Guano's historical significance was as much cultural as it was ecological and economic."[25] References to guano in popular culture are an important sign of this cultural influence, especially regarding the ongoing relationship between guano and colonialism. In his 1845 poem "Guanosong", Joseph Victor von Scheffel used a humorous verse to take a position in the then-popular polemic against Hegel's Naturphilosophie. The poem starts with an allusion to Heinrich Heine's Lorelei and may be sung to the same tune.[26] The poem ends however with the blunt statement of a Swabian rapeseed farmer from Böblingen who praises the seagulls of Peru as providing better manure even than his fellow countryman Hegel. This refuted the widespread Enlightenment belief that nature in the New World was inferior to the Old World. The poem has been translated by, among others, Charles Godfrey Leland.[27]
In Joseph Conrad's 1900 novel Lord Jim the characters Chester and Captain Robinson attempt to recruit the eponymous lead character for an expedition harvesting guano.
The setting of Ian Fleming's 1958 installation in the James Bond series Dr. No is a Caribbean guano island, and the villain dies at the end buried in guano.
In Stanley Kubrick's 1964 film Dr. Strangelove, Colonel "Bat" Guano (Keenan Wynn) leads an attack on the airbase responsible for sending a nuclear attack order to bomb the Soviet Union.
The 1994 film Men of War centers on a band of mercenaries who are hired by an investment firm to seize a tropical island for its extensive guano deposits.
In the 1995 film Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Jim Carrey's character attempts to save an African tribe from being dispossessed of a fortune in bat guano.
Hungarian painter Judit Reigl had a series of paintings between 1958-1964. She used to protect the floor of her atelier with old and ruined canvasses. When she moved out, she discovered that over these years the paintings developed an interesting surface, and she carved her "Guano painting" from these.

Moving To St. Paul, Minnesota
Saint Paul Regional Water Services supplies reliable, quality water and services at a reasonable cost to the city of Saint Paul and neighboring communities. Lake Agassiz, which was up to 600-700 feet (~200 m) deep, and at various times covered areas totaling over 110,000 square miles (~300,000 km2),  was formed from the meltwaters of the Laurentide Ice Sheet during the Wisconsonian glaciation of the last ice age The enormous outflow from this lake carved a wide valley now occupied by the much smaller Minnesota River and the Upper Mississippi River below its confluence with the Minnesota.
Blocked by an ice sheet to the north, the lake water rose until about 9,700 years Before Present (BP), when it overtopped the Big Stone Moraine , a ridge of glacial drift left by the receding glacier, at the location of Browns Valley, Minnesota The lake's outflow was catastrophic at times, 15 creating a wide valley to Saint Paul, where the massive River Warren Falls once graced the landscape.
Sioux and Ojibwa peoples were early inhabitants of the area. In 1680 the Franciscan missionary Louis Hennepin passed the site, and in 1766 explorer Jonathan Carver probed a nearby cavern (since known as Carver’s Cave). In 1805 Lieutenant Zebulon Montgomery Pike, leader of an American expedition to explore the headwaters of the Mississippi River, made a treaty there (never officially ratified) with the Sioux for possession of the region, including the site on which the military outpost Fort Snelling (now a state park) was later built. The first land claim was made in 1838 by tavern owner Pierre (“Pig’s Eye”) Parrant; he was closely followed by Abraham Perry. The settlement was known as Pig’s Eye Landing until 1841, when Roman Catholic missionary Lucien Galtier built a log chapel dedicated to the apostle Paul. In 1849 St. Paul became the capital of the newly formed Minnesota Territory, and it was made the state capital when Minnesota was admitted to the Union in 1858.
Saint Paul, east of the Mississippi River, was originally surveyed into 6x6 mile squares called townships. This survey was done by James M. Marsh in October of 1847. The townships were then surveyed into 1x1 mile squares called sections by Issac Higbee, Deputy Surveyor, during the months of October & November of 1847. Saint Paul, west of the Mississippi River, was surveyed into sections by Jesse T. Jarrett in September of 1853. The area now covered by Saint Paul was surveyed off the 4th Principal Meridian which runs through Wisconsin. Saint Paul covers parts of Townships 28 & 29 North and Ranges 22 & 23 West of the 4th Principal Meridian.
The City of Saint Paul was originally established as the "The Town of St. Paul" by an act of the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Minnesota in November of 1849. Saint Paul remained a town until March of 1854 when it became the "City of Saint Paul, Minnesota Territory". In May of 1858 when Minnesota became a state the city became known as "The City of Saint Paul, State of Minnesota".
Large parts of the city of Minneapolis was developed around the turn of the 20th century and much of the empty space was mostly filled in by the 1950s, with postwar housing built mostly in less desirable neighborhoods in the far south and north of Minneapolis.
For sports enthusiasts, the Twin Cities area plays host to numerous professional sports teams, including the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball's Saint Paul Saints, Major League Baseball's (MLB) Minnesota Twins, the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves, the National Football League's (NFL) Minnesota Vikings, the National Hockey League's (NHL) Minnesota Wild, the United Soccer League's (USL) USL First Division Minnesota Thunder and USL W-League Minnesota Lightning, and the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx.
Visit any church service, Roman Catholic , Protestant or Greek Orthodox , and it is the apostle Paul and his ideas that are central - in the hymns , the creeds , the sermons , the invocation and benediction , and of course, the rituals of baptism and the Holy Communion or Mass.
Primitive Christianity was a closely knit fellowship with the common meal and the Eucharist (thanksgiving for the sacrificial death of Christ) at the heart of it. But the Jewish purity rules made Jews reluctant to eat with Gentiles for fear of transgressing the Law.
Concordia University (1893) was founded by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod It is part of the 10-member Concordia University System It was founded to provide a Christian learning environment to high school students planning to go into professional ministries with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
New, modern housing, condos and apartments are available, especially in the fashionable parts of town, but if you want something contemporary the best places to look is in the old industrial districts around downtown Minneapolis for a refurbished warehouse apartment.
St. Paul and the Twin Cities metropolitan area traditionally votes for liberal, progressive politicians, but there are plenty of conservative areas for Republican folks, mainly in the Highland Park neighborhood, to feel at home in. St. Paul city government follows the trend with the current major, Chris Coleman , being a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party , affiliated with the national Democratic Party.
As America's third most literate city , Minneapolis is also home to a stunning library and Open Book , the largest literary and book arts center in the US. For avid readers, this means that a good book or helpful recommendation is never far from reach.
Every major cuisine is represented is restaurants all over the city, with many on Grand Avenue, an Italian district in the northeast of the city, the District del Sol on the Eastside, and the best Asian food in the Twin Cities on University Avenue, just outside downtown St.
The city's notable recreation locations include Indian Mounds Park , Battle Creek Regional Park, Harriet Island Regional Park, Highland Park , the Wabasha Street Caves , Lake Como , Lake Phalen , and Rice Park , as well as several areas abutting the Mississippi River The Irish Fair of Minnesota is also held annually at the Harriet Island Pavilion area.
A Minnesota Department of Transportation study found that increased daily service to Chicago should be economically viable, especially if it originates in Saint Paul and does not experience delays from the rest of the western route of the Empire Builder.
St Paul Minnesota  is a beautiful city that offers all the benefits of big city wants with that small town feel. If your considering relocating to St Paul consider it during the spring and summer months when Discount Moving Companies offer their best rates due to good weather.

Ironwood Custom’s ‘The Interpreter’ BMW R100R Scrambler
About Ironwood Custom Motorcycles
Tumblr media
      Redefine - Reimagine - Renew - Reinvent - Reshape
Nice to meet, ''Bold & Minimalistic'' at the same time, we are Ironwood! IWC Motorcycles is a Dutch custom garage founded by Arjan van den Boom & Partner in 2012. Together we customize, conceptualize & realize motorcycles to one-of-a-kind vintage machines, piece by piece! Let’s start first with; we are crazy about bikes, pretty much all of them as noticed on first glance but our hearts will skip a beat when seeing properly manufactured cafe racers around the globe.
The actual journey of taking on the build, tear down the bikes to its bare bones and rebuild them from the ground up provides us that all-time high. Our L-O-V-E for custom motorcycles is no secret so every project we handcraft will have its own specific details and key features to tell its own story.  Throughout the process of building, we mostly envision our bikes as mean and fast ''brat style” or ''bobber'' rides with a few touches from the industrial universe of the 20th century.
We constantly have new ideas shuffling in our heads and when it comes to finding the perfect tailored solution for each assignment, we will be challenged by conventional concepts blended with innovative defiance.
We achieve to deliver a work of art on every vintage machine, turning scrappy metal into gold! Each bike has it's own unique design and character, depending on budgets involved.
We perform semi projects, full rebuilds, build to sell and modify customer motorcycles into killer bikes!
We like to be different and get the most out of life. Our vision is to apply a mix of creativity. Some vintage, some with a modern twist.

Ironwood Custom’s ‘The Interpreter’ BMW R100R Scrambler
Tumblr media
Ironwood Custom Motorcycles has built a dozen BMW R customs in the last five years and the client has chosen the right shop. When a client approached Ironwood Customs with very specific requirements, the pressure to deliver was on Arjan van den Boom. His ability to visualize someone else's wishes are as refined as his motorcycle building skills and he turned a tired 1992 BMW R100R into this beautiful black scrambler brat, usually called' The Interpreter. 'Since he enjoyed the surroundings and hospitality of the Ironwood display room in leather sofa comfort, he had built up an idea of what he did and did n't want; and he was firm in his view! “ We do a lot of tailored solutions but for us, this bike reflects the interpretation of the specific demands from our customer. We tried to read each statement or comment from him and convert it directly onto the design of his BMW,” explains Arjan.
Tumblr media
The first task was to find a specific donor and it wasn't long before BMWs were popular in the Netherlands. An old motorcycle collector had just the right bike for sale and the cash was handed over to him. At Ironwood, it was torn down and the team was able to work the way forward with non-negotiable customers " spoked wheels, big chunky tires, bulky gas tank, mono shock, and a floating seat. " In order to ensure that the entire team was on the same page, Arjan developed a design and work could begin.
Tumblr media
Chassis modifications were initially introduced with the standard subframe thrown aside and the Ironwood signature seat post, which protrudes nicely from the welded backbone. This fits the customer's floating seat style, but he also dreamed of some swingarm changes. “The one-off rear shock design challenged us to execute it properly as envisioned on paper by the customer in advance of the project,” Arjan tells Pipeburn. While the stock bike uses a mono- shock, the client wanted it to move further in the right frame rail.
Tumblr media
Arjan was clear that he didn't want to make the swingarm a bulky metal mess to fit the design, so instead of guessing something so vital for the performance of the bike, he reached the HyperPro suspension wizards. Together, they developed a nice solution, perfectly welded new mounting points and custom-made for the HyperPro shock fitted for good measurement. With everything glued and excess tabs removed, the frame, swingarm and a bunch of different pieces were sandblasted and sent out for black powder coat dusting.
“the welded headers are to die for and merge under the motor in a hand-built twin exit muffler.”
Tumblr media
With the bulk of the motorcycle out of the shop, the engine was opened and treated to a complete rebuild to make sure for trouble-free riding. The Bosch ignition was replaced by the entire electronic and adjustable system of Silent Hektik. While the fuel side is still fed by Bing carbs, they have been revised and re-jetted to the K&N pod filters. But here the amazing exhaust system is stealing the show and that is Marcel's work from The Custom Factory. The welded headers of full stainless construction are to die for and merge under the motor in a hand- built twin exit muffler.
Tumblr media
The assembly started with the new rear suspension bolted up and the hubs hung up front and rear. They are tied to new black rims and wrapped in the Heidenau K60 dual sports tyres, the choice Arjan 's. The front suspension keeps the standard externals lowered by the powder - coated triple trees, the internals being changed to match the new rear end setup. Plenty of weight removed the factory Brembo twin disc brakes are more than capable of hauling up the blacked-out beauty.
Tumblr media
The previous model tank gets the look spot on and has a Monza filler for good measurement. The deep gloss black paint contrasts perfectly with the matte graphics, the company motto of the customer, painted by Jacco from Royal Kustom Works. The floating seat request is completed by a solo and stitched by Miller Kustom Upholstery. The front headlight has a modern interpretation of the classic style with an LED set- up and the rear indicators feature clever taillights installed into the outer rings.
Tumblr media
All the factory wiring was removed and replaced by only the best from Motogadget with an m-unit as the operating brain. A set of Motogadget m.blaze turn signals works with bar end mirrors on the braced bars. While things are kept minimal with an offset motoscope mini that serves as the instrument cluster to recreate a killer build beemer. BMW R builds have become a staple of the custom scene, for good reason, and as long as workshops like Ironwood Customs can translate the dreams their customers into rolling masterpieces they will continue to be the moto du jour par excellence!
