The soft glow of neon through dirty glass and rain peeked in between the slats of Wreckx’s window blinds. Bright light infiltrating his room was never a welcomed part of his life, but it was unavoidable. Whether that be the neon signage of the advanced, grimy city, or the occasional ray of sun that managed to battle its way through the gloomy clouds, it was all the same to him. Another reminder that time continues to move, that life slips by, that other people have managed to keep pushing forward. Of course, he hasn’t managed such things (the pathetic piece of shit that he is).
Something, somewhere inside of him, was wrong. He couldn’t pinpoint if it was in his head, his thoughts, his mind, or a gut feeling that was seated somewhere he couldn’t claw out. He was burdened with invisible shackles, chaining him in his room. Sometimes he’d hop on his computer and see what sort of doom and gloom awaited him in the broadcasts of the everyday news. Sometimes he’d scroll through gruesome videos of people meeting their unfortunate ends just so that he could feel a sliver of something. He didn’t know what the ‘something’ was, obviously. Guilt? Fear? Maybe sick pleasure that at least he’s better off than that, or maybe just sick pleasure in general (yes, he’s disgusting, he’s aware).
He was terrible. Wreckx couldn’t give a time as to when he started on this downward spiral. It was before he was unceremoniously dumped by his first and only girlfriend (ONE girl, at 23 years old! Shameful, he should just die) a few months ago. It was before he took up the immoral job of practically spying on people through their cameras for a living. It was before he got kicked out of his home the literal minute he was able to be.
Maybe it was when he was born. Maybe it was somehow before then. He wouldn’t be surprised.
He rolls over in his bed, covering his face with his one pillow in a desperate attempt to keep the light from the outside out. It was morning, he knew. The sun was rising, and he was alone yet again.
A tinny, robotic meow sounded from the foot of Wreckx’s bed. Right. Not alone alone, (something even more pathetic) Screwloose was here. His pet? His… well, he was certainly programmed to act like a pet.
The large, gray robotic cat padded over, closer to the head of the bed. Screwloose still carried the appearance of an assault drone, which Wreckx had modified to create him, yet he behaved as programmed. Like a real cat. Four legs, paws, heavy gray plating, a long tail tipped with two taser prongs. No eyes, instead a black glass visor, and two tall, pointed ears.
Screwloose put a paw on the bed’s blanket and started tugging it off of the bed, and off of Wreckx. Right, Wreckx had programmed Screwloose to start pulling him out of bed if he was still in bed at noon. That became a necessity to stop him from spending days and days wasting away. He couldn’t believe that it was already so late (but what does that matter anyways? He doesn’t exactly have something he should be doing).
Screwloose meowed again.
“‘M getting up,” Wreckx groaned. He slung his legs over the side of the bed and hopped down from the ever so slightly lofted bed (short king, absolutely no personality to make up for it). He dug around in the under-the-bed drawer, pulling out a clean-ish shirt to put on. He pet the top of Screwloose’s head, ruffling fur that wasn’t there and chuckling at the way Screwloose used a paw to ‘groom’ the spot that he had touched.
Wreckx slumped into his computer chair, opening up his computer to start responding to messages. He freelanced as a coder and general tech-problem-solver in his freetime to make a few extra credits to spend. In terms of less legal, more dubious methods of making money, he would take orders to hack into people’s cameras to gather data (AKA, creep on them and record videos, most of which he kept a copy of for himself). It was usually spouses looking to confirm suspicions of cheating, creepy ex partners, though he’d occasionally get a hefty payday from a little bit of corporate espionage. The last one was his favorite, even though it was rare. It was the only one that didn’t leave a bad taste in his mouth.
He responded to a couple people asking questions about why their rigs and computers weren’t working, and somebody who wanted to pay him to build them a PC. Those conversations went easily enough, and the service he worked through sent him the credits once each case was resolved. A little ‘turn it off and turn it back on’ here and there, and then telling that kid that he didn’t want to build him a PC, and he had cleared the backlog of messages by the evening.
He peeled himself out of his chair and trodded over the kitchen, searching for something to eat. His options were limited, and that was how he liked it. Ramen that he would put an extra pad of butter into. Canned soups. Things that were salty and definitely awful for him. He had no issue with his narrow taste, so long as the company didn’t betray him by changing the recipe at all. He took out a cup of ramen and poured some hot water into it, tossing butter into it and bringing it back to his desk.
Something dinged on the dim screen, in the even dimmer room. He hunched in his chair, leaning in close to see what it said. Clicking the message, the window opened up. Instead of a name, just AnonyMouse popped up at the top of the screen. His eyes scanned the message.
“Hey kid. I see what you’ve been up to. Do you wanna make some credits?”
Sketchy. Very sketchy. Wreckx wasn’t hurting for money right now, but he could definitely use a little bit of wiggle room.
“What are you offering?” He shot back. “You haven’t given me a reason to believe that you aren’t a scammer. The only reason I’m messaging now is because I’m confident in my firewall” He threw in a few cat kaomojis to try (and fail) to make his double-text a little bit less pathetic.
“Your choice, to trust or not to trust” This AnonyMouse responded.
“What are you offering?”
“5K. Simple job. Snap some photos, give me a location, and we’re good to go.”
Five thousand credits was no small sum. It was enough to cover his rent for a couple months, he’d definitely be able to live more comfortably… Plus, photos and locations was most of what his more illicit work entailed anyways.
“Do I get any more information on the target?”
“Target. Funny, you must think the work you do is sooooo cool, hm?”
Wreckx’s chest felt a little cold at that (why the fuck is he wanting approval from some sketchy stranger?), but he simply waited for another message.
“Rei Khan. She works the night shift at Palai’s Diner during the week, but I want to know where she lives.”
It was the kind of job that left a little bit of a sour taste in Wreckx’s mouth. Not too sour though, given that his moral compass had been pretty well eroded.
“House calls are harder. 6K.”
“No problem. I want photos of the outside. I want a photo of her inside. I don’t care if it’s through a window. Don’t get caught, I want this to be a surprise.”
“Deal.”
Wreckx had a sinking feeling that he’d regret agreeing to this. This AnonyMouse person was suspicious, more so than a lot of the people he worked with normally. Plus, Wreckx was a cat (ew, cringe, is he seriously thinking that?), and if this person’s username was anything to go by, they weren’t trustworthy.
“Pleasure doing business. I look forward to your results.” The chat window then terminated itself with a dull chime.
