Week 8: Commuters Interview
Another seven students were interviewed in the 8th week, each sharing unique perspectives based on their commuting experiences. Their insights highlight a range of transportation preferences influenced by comfort, convenience, cost, and safety.
Tumblr media
Maria Pamela (Bus | Lumbia)
Maria prefers buses over jeeps because they are comfortable and convenient. Although jeeps are less expensive, she prefers buses because they are on schedule and not too crowded. The extra comfort and reminders of the conductor during drop-off places make her commutation more comfortable.
Alyssa (Bus | Bugo)
Alyssa's experience is uncertain. Buses are a faster option during rush hour, but she considers the crowding and standing room unfair and unsafe, when she's no other option in a hurry. But she prefers jeepneys when available because of space. Her insights reflect a strong interest in passenger welfare and fair treatment.
Lisah (Bus)
Lisah used transport according to urgency. She likes jeepneys because they are fast, particularly if she were running late, though she mostly prefers buses for comfort it gives. Her feedback indicates how route efficiency wins comfort when time becomes the concern.
Tumblr media
Jesseil Mae Rubin (Bus | Villa)
Jesseil prefers the air-conditioned convenience and quicker travel of buses but is annoyed with some conductor behavior, such as refusing to give change and tolerating overcrowding. Her observation shows a requirement for tighter passenger limits and good fare handling.
Tumblr media
Samantha (Bus | Bugo)
Samantha perceives buses as more advanced and dependable, particularly because of the ticket system. She is faced with overloading during rush hours, though. Her proposal of a mobile app and decent terminals indicates a yearning for a more organized and technology based transport system.
Tumblr media
Margarette (Bus | Orotsco)
Margarette takes the bus every day but is not happy with the regular overloading and variable conductor attitude she faces. Her experience demands stricter enforcement of capacity limits and more professional service from bus workers.
Katrina (Bus | Balingasag)
Katrina considers the bus convenient for daily travel but is upset with conductors who forget to return fair change. Her experience highlights the need for fare transparency and accountability in public transport services.
While each commuter has different preferences depending on their location and daily routine, many face common challenges, especially overcrowding and overloading. These shared issues reflect the need for more efficient, comfortable, and fair public transport systems.

MEET A CHARACTER #2: MEI-MARIE ("COMPUTER WISH")
Eng:
Mei-Marie from my very first project — TABR. I started the project back in the fall of 2021, but continued only in August 2023. She was created about a year and a half ago, and at that time I hadn't even imagined her role in the plot yet, she was just a character in a third-party arc 😼
Mei-Marie is a character who stands out from my other ocs. She knows she's not a real person, and she's living with it. There is a Creator in the TABR universe — Yalki (it's not me, Yalki is just my another oc😭). There may be a separate post about him in the future, but for now I just want to say a couple of things about him related to Mei-Marie herself:
— Yalki created all the characters in the TAKB universe, and he can control each of them, but in order not to overload his mind (Yalki is still an ordinary person, just with a huge imagination), he created four special characters, one of which is Mei-Marie. Each of these characters performed a separate "function" and had complete free will.
— Yalki does not control Mei-Marie and/or her fate. In the scripted world of TABR, where each person's step is thought out in advance, Mei-Marie's life is left only to herself, which is generally quite funny, given her character's problematic.
—Mei-Marie lives with the other three conscious characters (+Yalki) together in a large imaginary estate.
— Yalki, as the creator of the universe, can come up with anything. So his conscious characters, who live and work with him, have everything they want (within reasonable limits, of course).
Tumblr media
So, Mei-Marie is a young woman who is brilliant at computers and systems. She has a very calm and stoic personality, it's hard to make her laugh or surprise. She always experiences her emotions and thoughts alone, searching solitude on purpose.
She is quite tall, very slender. She have rather long dark blue, almost black, straight hair. Mei-Marie loves to look luxurious and deliberately attractive, so she prefers to keep her hair neat and loose. But being alone in her room, spending hours at the computer screen, she still prefers the convenience of putting her hair in a ponytail. She wears glasses at work, but in everyday life she is a little embarrassed to wear them, so she have lenses.
In the story, Mei-Marie appears in the middle, then at the very end, when the action moves to Yalki's estate, and readers/viewers opens the truth about the structure of the TABR world.
All four conscious characters are revealed in the "uncanonical" lines of the plot as they act in separate digressions. In the canon, these characters show their true selves only at the end of the plot, when Yalki leaves the TABR universe.
Mei-Marie always wanted to be someone else. All her abilities and education begins and ends on working with computers. She doesn't even really have anyone to compare herself to, but it still feels like any other character is doing some special, important job, while Mei-Marie is just Mei-Marie. The very realization that she is not a real person, but just an imaginary character, added special difficulties for her.
She has always had a nice relationships with the rest of the conscious characters. They are all women, they all share the same roof and background.
Regina has always been the person who will guide Mei-Marie in a positive way, support and listen without premature judgments. But also never was too polite, sometimes scolding her, caring.
Elizabeth happens brought Mae-Marie simple, funny drawings on defective papers instead of reports and documents.
Vivien often spent time with Mei-Marie in her room. She was probably especially close to Vivien, but when Vivien decided to leave them, Mei—Marie accepted it simply and without pain.
And Bird, who was created by Yalki to replace Vivien, became a younger sister for all three of them. Mei-Marie saw a part of herself in her: Bird was also always awkward in communication, slightly distant.
When Yalki left the TABR universe, it became one of the variants of the real world. Now all the characters have real freedom of action and thought, the world has become the way we know it.
Therefore, the conscious characters also became "real people." They were preparing for this together with Yalki, so he insisted on coming up with a proper backstory for them, yet everyone refused.
Except for Mei-Marie.
She asked Yalki to come up with everything for her: real parents, past, education, job, clothes — everything that would help Mei-Marie become a real person.
This alienated the others. Beth and Regina adhered to the philosophy that they should not forget the truth, they refused to "invent" a new life for themselves, because they are already the way they are, and they no longer need to be someone else. Bird didn't really care, as she always remained neutral about any situation, and by that time Vivien was no longer with them, "blending into the crowd," as she wanted.
From the moment the world changed, Mei-Marie tries to forget her past and live in the present, where she has a "real" family, a "real" job and a "real" life.
Tumblr media
But it's also worth touching on the other side of the "non-canonical" universe of TABR. There are completely different plot actions taking place there. In the non-canonical universe, there is a separate plot for each character (there are already more than a hundred ocs) to make it easier and more interesting to understand and feel the character.
A separate story by Mei-Marie is called "Computer Wish: Moonfall", it tells about the life of a certain M-M in the distant past. The events take place in ancient Rome, but at some point people found a Computer. This is a huge, weighty device (a reference to computers from the past, when one occupied an entire room) that could deform and change space using a "code". Those who could understand this "code" were highly valued and appointed Editors for their entire life.
M-M work as an Editor. Her job included coding; usually, only construction orders came in, so as not to pay a bunch of people for the work. M-M had to typing every action in the code as an instruction, otherwise an error would have occurred. M-M really low her eyesight this way.
One day, news reaches her: out of nowhere, a second Computer appeared — "Y" (The Computer controlled by M-M were called "Miros"). This new Computer mysteriously listened to people and fulfilled their wishes.
Gathering up her courage, she tidied herself up, straightened her long blue hair, took off her glasses and left the Editorial room.
There are two endings to the story. In the first (canonical) M-M finds Y, waits for her turn in the queue, and wants to wish for something very-very great. She always dreamed of fame, that the mere sound of her name would remind legends, all the good and the bad things, linked to her. As M-M stood in line, her head was filled with ideas, from crazy to even crazier. Finally, after seeing Y, when it was already deep dark, she wished for the collapse of the Moon.
M-M didn't care about people's lives, about the potential irreversible changes all over the planet — she wanted attention. Even the thought that in hundreds, thousands of years, the survivors would remember M-M at the sight of the black night sky gave her goosebumps.
Tumblr media
When the moon really split, its pieces slowly fell to the Earth, the nearby ocean waters, attracted by the Moon, returned back in the form of a towering tsunami, M-M just laughed and shouted with all her might: "That was ME!" "I did it!" "It's all MY fault!" "ME!"
The other ending greatly shortens the plot, but shows a more realistic and simpler version — M-M talks about her intentions while standing in line, so she is quickly kicked out and taken back to the Editorial room. There, she sits down at her Computer, sees a new order, and gets to work. Less than half a minute later, M-M whimper and go down, whining in despair and the hopelessness, brightnessless of her future, while her fingers typed the code on reflexes, doing boring, monotonous work over and over again..
Tumblr media
Well, that's the way it is!! I love Mei-Marie very much, I am very much happy to share her with y'all!😼 Stay in touch.

Rus:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

Design As Learning: A School of Schools Reader⁣ Available at www.draw-down.com⁣ ⁣ Why do design? What is design for? In a world of dwindling natural resources, exhausted social and political systems, and an overload of information there are many urgent reasons to reimagine the design discipline, and there is a growing need to look at design education. Learning and unlearning should become part of an ongoing educational practice.⁣ ⁣ We need new proposals for how to organize society, how to structure our governments, how to live with, not against, the planet, how to sift fact from fiction, how to relate to each other, and frankly, how to simply survive.⁣ ⁣ Design as Learning asks: can design and design education provide these critical ideas and strategies?⁣ ⁣ Interviewees include Åbäke (Maki Suzuki), Fabb (Burcu Biçer Saner, Efe Gözen), Navine G. My original comic Alpha Centurion War: Battle of the Andromeda and Milky Way Galaxy
The big bad of this story is called the Forces of Evil. The Forces of Evil are led by eight villains where one villain is as dangerous as Brainiac, Darkseid, Imperiex Prime, Doomsday, Mongul, Ares, Starro, & Trigon combined. The lieutenants of the Forces of Evil are like Bernadeth, Stompa, Artemiz, Speed Queen, Malice, Vundabar, Bloody Mary, Wunda, & Sweet Leilani of the Female Furies while the generals of the Forces of Evil are like Queen Bee (Zazzala), Granny Goodness, Siren (Hila), Desaad, Mongal, Kalibak, Hercules, & Steppenwolf. The Forces of Evil are aided by their allies who are like the Fearsome Five, Villainy Inc, Legion of Supervillains, Injustice Society, Legion of Doom, Hive, Injustice League, Brotherhood of Evil, Secret Society of Supervillains, & Fatal Five. Millions, billions, & trillions die to defend the star system, galaxy, universe, multiverse, & omniverse from their subjugation. Most stay dead but some come back to life using a special power & they suffer permanent emotional, psionic, & mental damage such as chronic depression anxiety panic attacks & PTSD so there is a realistic cost to even returning to life. There has to be a cost even if a hero does return to life they can't be the same my heroes return to life with bionic limbs or cybernetic eyes to replace body parts they lost when they died so they're disabled and are now bionics or cyborgs. Its what Heroes in Crisis should have been. There is still humor and breaks to let people take a break but things get grim when the stakes get dire. The heroes get chronic depression anxiety panic attacks & PTSD when they witness it, experience it, survive it, & or when they are brought back to life so no ones is unscathed. I use my personal experience in making sure its accurate as someone with depression anxiety panic attacks OCD & PTSD. I want more representation of accurate mental illnesses because its not this romanticized crap bullshit that media show. Its misleading, ableist, & dangerous to romanticize mental illnesses that way. Some heroes even the greatest of them the polyamorous genderfluid pansexual main character became disillusioned when faced with how many lives answered his/their or her/their call and gave their lives. Pros and Cons of Digital Technology
Digital technology is a base two process. Digitized information is recorded in binary code in the combination of the digits 0 and 1, also called bits, which represents words, images, and videos. A large amount of information to be compressed on a small storage device is enables by digital technology.
The information can be easily stored and transported. The speed of data transmission is increased with the invention of digital technology. It has completely transformed the way people communicate, learn and work.
In recent years digital technology has revolutionized almost every aspect of people’s lives. Examples of digital technology include social media, online games, multimedia, and mobile phones.
Digital technology is used in different areas of life such as in business, education, media, healthcare, transportation, communication and many more. Despite the several benefits of digital technology, it brings along. Here we try to list out the most important pros and cons of digital technology.
Tumblr media
Pros of Digital Technology
Connectivity
The world is now globalized with the invention of digital technology. It makes our friends and family closer than before. You can make communication by words, video, audio, and exchange of the media.
With the creation of websites, apps and software socialization has boomed in recent decades. The most popular social media are Facebook, twitter, and Instagram.
Communication speed and versatile working
The data transfer rate or internet speed has rapidly increased since dial-up methods for internet connectivity. Broadband technology increases the speed of the internet even more. The transfer of large files instantaneously, streaming video and audio in real-time and access data virtually from anywhere in the world becomes possible with high internet speeds.
Working in a closed room with international co-workers is impossible due to large geographical boundaries As internet speed increases with broadband services you can work from any part of the world in real-time. Many online and freelancing jobs done from many miles away without any hindrance.
Digital devices are portable
Digital devices are becoming smaller and smaller day by day. The storage media can store a large amount of data in a tiny chip. With the invention of transistors, the size and weight of digital devices have greatly reduced.
The quality of stored information is preserved.
The quality is never reduced with the use of digital technology in contrast with analog technology. The stored information in the analog system may damage or even lost or duplicated but in the digital system the case opposite.
Learning re-defined
Beforehand the traditional classroom is taught by teachers only. Students are completely dependent on teachers for acquiring knowledge which can be destructible since teachers are not always exactly correct.
With the arrival of digital technology teachers and students, both are heavily influenced since they can jump into the internet where you can find the solution to almost every possible problem.
According to a 2011 report by the Nellie Mae Education foundation, technology enables private study, develops computer skills and increases student engagement. You can have feedback on queries that you arise on a certain platform.
Entertainment
You can pursue your hobbies and interests through the use of digital technology. You can play online games and admit in music courses from any part of the world with the man of your choice. Different types of tv and reality shows are found on the internet which we can access with digital devices.
Transportation
Transportation medium such as airplanes, trains, and ships are using digital technology to accurately navigate routes in the sea and land. Not only that cars and buses are becoming fully automated in the near future.
The speedometer is digital nowadays which eases the use of vehicles. Road accident and plane crash are greatly reduced with the use of digital technology. The checking of the passport is past and reliable with a chip embedded in it.
The chip stores all the personal information which speeds up the process of checking through customs. Booking of planes and trains are done through online services.
Cons of Digital Technology
Data security
Data security is a great concern nowadays in the digitized world. Digital technology means that a huge amount of information(text, images, and videos) is collected and stored.
This stored information may be of individuals or organization which is vulnerable to theft. This data can go into the hands of criminals, terrorist, foreign enemies, etc. as all the electronic equipment are connected through the internet all around the world.
Social isolation
The face to face communication is rare these days with the development of digital technology. People can communicate and socialize through the internet which is a part of digital technology.
This way of interacting sometimes creates ambiguity and disbelief among them. Studies have suggested that the lack of real-life contact causes depression and other forms of mental illness in many people.
Too much of work or work overload
As working with the use of digital technology increases speed and performance there are drawbacks of using it too. Workers from all around the world have to manage and handle large numbers of emails which can be hectic.
A large amount of data needs to be recorded and analyzed on a daily basis which requires greater attention and dedication creating distress and isolation. Organizing the vast amount of data such minutes of a meeting, training videos, photographs, reports can be a huge headache.
Diminishing job opportunity
Nowadays, it does not require you to be physically present in the office to do your work since you can work or perform tasks remotely with the use of the internet. The Internet allows workers from third world countries to do the same task in the minimum wage. This can reduce your job replacement opportunity.
There are certain types of work that are performed by automated machines but beforehand they were done by humans. Increasingly, more digital equipment is employed in a working area reducing the chance of getting a job.
Digital technology creates addiction towards it.
Online and offline computer games, messaging, social media platforms, chat rooms, dating, and other websites can be susceptible to become addictive. Internet user ends up wasting too much money for no or low return.
Computer games are so addictive that they may destroy your capability and time to perform an even more important task in your daily life. Gamers and surfers spend so much time on a computer which results in addiction towards it.
Manipulation of digital media
There are different ways to change, edit and manipulate digital media. Manipulation of digital media is more come than before which increases the possibility of fake reports and results inducing more confusion instead of reality.
Photoshop, after effect, are such tools which can manipulate the original data to something new creating confusion about the original ideas and thought of the writer or creator.
Photographs, audio, videos are easy to edit. The size and quality of the image, the true voice of the singer are manipulated to create something new which lacks originality and true nature of the product.
Plagiarism and Copyright
The enforcement of copyright law is hard to implement as the information that is present in the internet world is vast and to track every data is becoming harder.
Everyone can copy and paste information from the internet which is worthless as you do not spend your time learning them. Plagiarism is also the practice of taking other’s work and ideas and passing them off as one’s own which is becoming common in the digital world.

Ever since it’s announcement I have been waiting for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but there was one BIG problem I ran into.  I did not have a switch, nor can I afford the almost $400 system.  But in January while searching for the perfect birthday gift for my husband at Best Buy (I settled on Kakarot, on release day) I discovered the beautiful Nintendo Switch Lite.  Finally I can truly be excited! And excited is an understatement. I will be picking up the handheld system soon and preordering the game.  March 20th can not get here fast enough!  I know there are many Animal Crossing enthusiasts on here, and I would love to be able to play with new friends!  So when the game comes out, I would be happy to open the “gates” per say.  Although this time, it’s an airport! So exciting! Down below I have some questions for the dear readers of this post, and my answers!
What was the first Animal Crossing game you played?
For me, it was Wild World. I wish I can say I was an OG and played the original game, but alas...I never personally had a game cube.  I was about 10 when I played it about maybe about a year after it’s release.  My cousin had a white DS lite and played it.  I remember watching her play it and I never got bored.  I begged my Mom for it, and coming from a poor family she got it for me as soon as she was able (a.k.a. the following christmas).  I have played every game since.  I am now 23 and literally feel like a 9 year old again as I wait for it.
After the many, many trailers what are you excited for?
Honestly? ALL OF IT!  My husband probably thinks of me as a child as I honestly can NOT stop talking about it. He’s new to the games and thinks of them as alright, though I have a sneaking suspicion he is only playing it for me.  But there is so many new features and the breathtaking graphics that I honestly can’t choose one! Although I will say the customization we have all been waiting so long for really takes the cake.  You can now customize your character and your town in ways you never could.  From being able to change your nose, hair, and eyes whenever you please to BUILDING WATERFALLS and pathways.  Not to mention you can place residents homes wherever you like.  Not to mention the museum! It’s just so exciting and definitely some of my favorite things so far.  But of course, there is undoubtedly so much new things to discover when we finally snag the games to play.
Have you spotted a new favorite character?
Honestly the Able sisters have always been my favorite and I’m so excited! I’m also excited to see Labelle possibly taking the place of Gracie (it just shows how much she has grown!), though I do hope to still see Gracie’s sass. But in terms of new characters I can’t wait to meet the adorable Daisy Mae!  I just wanna pinch her cheeks!
What do you think of the gravestone?
If you have watched the direct, at one point you may have spotted the gravestone...what do you think it could be?  There are many speculations as to what it could be...a lot speculating Tortimer.  Tortimer is obviously a long time favorite, and I am unsure if that would be the case.  It seems unlikely that any of the characters would be “killed off”.
Another death of speculation is Joan.  After all Daisy Mae seems to be taking her place...  This however is also very unlikely if you think about it in Japan there is this event in a child’s life they label as the “First Errand”.  It is where the young child is sent to obviously run their very first errand, whether it be to the grocery store or to make a delivery. (Upon quickly looking up and making sure I get my facts right, there is a TV show about this. So I am not 100% sure if it is a culture thing.) In Japan however children are taught to be very independent from a young age.  So this would make sense in the case of Daisy Mae, while this may not be her first errand she is certainly helping her mother with the family business.  Of course, that is, if Daisy Mae is in fact Joan’s daughter.
What this possibly could be however, in my opinion, IF a death is involved..is that perhaps in the development of the game a staff member could have sadly passed away and this was their way of paying tribute.
However this could also be a decoration, as according to this article I found after a quick search.  This article is a good read and I recommend looking through it.
Of course all the above about the gravestone is speculation and opinion, I do not have the facts.  We can only wait for a response from Nintendo or see for ourselves in the game.
Would you be interested in inviting strangers to your island?
I think I wouldn’t mind this now! As there are protective measures against what is called “griefing”. Griefing is where you invite a stranger and they completely trash your town. I have never invited a stranger for this very reason!  As we all do, we work hard on building up our towns, and we happen to take a bit of pride in our handiwork.
Of course if you would like to visit my island sometime after the launch I would happily invite you! Just message me or comment below!
Is there anything from previous games you will miss?
A few.  Especially if Gracie isn’t in this game.  I do love her sass. I’m also gonna miss Nat salivating over the bugs I give him during the Bug Off! Silly chameleon.
What residents are you excited to see?
Molly, Apollo, Fauna, Lobo, Goldie, and Grizzly are just a few of my all time favorites!  I hope to have them on my island at some point! But I am also excited to meet new residents as well!
Would you recommend the Animal Crossing Series?
A billion times, yes! Animal Crossing is a game anyone of any age will love.  I always loved video games, but my mother was not a big fan. She is almost 46 and LOVES Animal Crossing. She refuses to get hyped about this game because she cannot afford the system to play.  I’m hoping in June to get it for her Birthday for her.
This game does not include violence just cuteness overload! So it is definitely safe for your kiddos! Unless, you count catching insects and fish as violence.
Thank you for taking the time to read my lengthy excited rant about New Horizons! I can’t wait to post more when the game finally releases! See you soon!

#HTE Could Plants Be the Future of Interface Design?
Merging plants with our digital electronics to create a radical new interface might sound like the premise of a Black Mirror episode, but it's exactly what researchers at MIT Media Lab's Fluid Interfaces Group are exploring.
Harpreet Sareen and Pattie Maes started their research with Elowan, a plant-robot that responds to light. Silver electrodes were attached to the plant's leaves, where they could pick up the electrical signals within the plant that react to the presence of light and route them to a robotic stand underneath. When light sources were placed near the plant, those signals would trigger the wheels to autonomously move in the direction of the light source.
"Plants are normally thought of as passive creatures in the environment," Sareen explains. "Contrary to this, they can not only sense what's happening around them but respond and display naturally. Through cyborg botany, we power some of our digital functions with the natural abilities of plants."
Previously, Sareen has cited this merging as "the future of interaction—where we don't think of interfaces as separate but within nature itself." This would open up a radical new approach in sharp contrast to the sensorial overload of our screens.
"Our interaction and communication channels with plant organisms in nature are subtle—whether it be looking at their color, orientation, moisture, the position of their flowers, leaves and such," he notes. "This subtlety stands in contrast to our interactions with artificial electronic devices that are centered in and around the screens, requiring our full attention and inducing cognitive load. We envision bringing such interactions out from the screens and back into the natural world around us."
The team recently released two new projects, titled Phytoactuators and Planta Digitalis, which explore this concept further. In Phytoactuators, the team connected electrodes to a Venus Flytrap, allowing it to receive signals. In an accompanying app, users see a live stream of the plant and when they click its leaves on the screen, it triggers the plant to act in real life. For Planta Digitalis, the researchers "grew" a conductive "wire" inside the plant so it could essentially function like an antenna or a sensor.
These experiments led the researchers to possible future applications that include sending notifications—the plant might jiggle to alert you when your package is delivered, for instance—or as a motion sensor, which could help you keep track of your pet or be applied to security systems.
For Sareen and Maes, electronic and biological systems have remained separate only because we haven't found an effective bridge between them—and that's where their innovations come in. "Plants are living creatures that are self-powered, self-repairing and self-fabricating—close to the science fiction electronics that we would ideally aim for. Using nature as part of our design process and ushering into this new course of interaction design can potentially be a key to ubiquitous sustainable interactions."

The 5 Best and 5 Worst Foods For Sleep
sleepinessfoodsFor many, the secret to getting a good night’s sleep comes down to two things–stress and diet. It’s important to not overload your digestive system two or less hours before you sleep. Including one or two of these sleep promoting foods will help to relax tense muscles, quiet buzzing minds, and/or get calming, sleep-inducing hormones — serotonin and melatonin — flowing. On the flip side, there’s five foods to stay away from.
1. Cherries — Fresh, dried and tart cherries are one of the only natural food sources of melatonin, the chemical that controls the body’s internal clock to regulate sleep. Researchers who tested tart cherries and found high levels of melatonin recommend eating them an hour before bedtime or before a trip when you want to sleep on the plane.
2. Almonds — A handful of these heart-healthy nuts can send you snoozing because they contain both tryptophan and a nice dose of muscle-relaxing magnesium. They have the added benefit of supplying proteins that can help maintain a stable blood sugar level while sleeping, and help promote sleep by switching you from your alert adrenaline cycle to your rest-and-digest cycle. Try this bedtime snack: Have a tablespoon of almond butter or a 1-ounce portion of almonds to help your body relax.
3. Honey — Drizzle a little in your herbal tea. Lots of sugar is stimulating, but a little glucose tells your brain to turn off orexin, a recently discovered neurotransmitter that’s linked to alertness. Honey can promote relaxation and help ease you to sleep at night. The natural sugar found in honey raises our insulin slightly and allows tryptophan, to enter our brains more easily. Taking a spoonful of honey before bed can help you get restful sleep. Surprising New Method to Improve Vision Naturally (Try It Tonight) Click Here Now For Igenics Ads by Revcontent
4. Flaxseeds — When life goes awry, and feeling down is keeping you up, try sprinkling 2 tablespoons of these healthy little seeds on your bedtime oatmeal. They’re rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a natural mood lifter. Many people notice that just 1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil 1 hour before bed promotes a deeper sleep. Generally, fatty acids are involved in initiating and maintaining sleep. There are different categories of fatty acids that we need: omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids. All three types of fatty acids play a role in sleep. Flax oil is a rich source of all three of them.
5. Bananas — They’re practically a sleeping pill in a peel. Potassium and magnesium are natural muscle relaxants, and bananas are a good source of both. They also contain the amino acid L-tryptophan, which gets converted to 5-HTP in the brain. The 5-HTP in turn is converted to serotonin (a relaxing neurotransmitter) and melatonin.
5 WORST FOODS TO PROMOTE SLEEP
1. Alcohol — Having a drink (or two) is one way to nod off more quickly, but how restful is an alcohol-induced slumber? While a nightcap may get you to doze off, you’re more likely to wake up during the night and may not feel as rested following your sleep. So although that glass of wine may help you get to sleep faster, the effect of consolidating sleep in the first half of the night is offset by having more disrupted sleep in the second half of the night which creates sleep deprivation in the long-term.
2. Spicy Foods — Research has shown over the years that a spicy meal at night can indeed lead to poor sleep. The most direct study to show this was published in The International Journal of Psychophysiology by a team of Australian researchers. On the nights that included spicy meals, there were marked changes in the subjects’ sleep patterns. They spent less time in both the light phase of sleep known as Stage 2 and the deep, slow-wave Stages 3 and 4. All of which meant that they experienced less sleep over all and took longer to drift off.
3. Fatty Foods — Research shows that people who often eat high-fat foods not only gain weight, they also experience a disruption of their sleep cycles. A heavy meal activates digestion, which can lead to nighttime trips to the bathroom. People who eat a lot of fatty foods may also have more difficulty sleeping. There seems to be a strong connection between the circadian processes, sleep and metabolism relating to the processing of fatty foods such as high-fat dairy, fried foods and fatty meats.
4. Coffee — It’s no surprise that an evening cup of coffee might disrupt your sleep. Even moderate caffeine can cause sleep disturbances. But don’t forget about less obvious caffeine sources, like, cola, tea, and decaffeinated coffee. For better sleep, cut all caffeine from your diet four to six hours before bedtime.
5. Dark Chocolate — Besides caffeine, chocolate also contains theobromine, another stimulant that can increase heart rate and sleeplessness. While dark chocolate is excellent for your health, try to avoid ingesting any chocolate 5 hours or less before bed.

Electronic Requests for Proposals Have Created a Mess for Many
The San Diego Convention Center. Robert Ziegler / Flickr
Skift Take: Hailed as a panacea to streamline the bidding process that would make venues and meeting planners more productive, electronic requests for proposals still have a long way to go.
— Andrew Sheivachman
When meeting planners wanted information about a venue in the old days, they wrote up a request for proposal, or RFP, and faxed it over. Hotels, convention centers, or convention and visitor bureaus took a look at the request, determined if the needs could be met, and faxed or mailed a reply. The process was time-consuming on both sides.
When electronic request for proposal tools hit the market in the late 1990s, they were seen as a modern time-saver. It hasn’t quite worked out that way. While they are widely used, there are still planners who prefer the traditional method, now using email rather than fax. On the other end of the spectrum, some planners use new systems to the fullest, overwhelming suppliers with queries, which creates another set of problems.
There’s been no comprehensive research on the use of electronic requests; information is largely anecdotal, and the answer may depend on whom you ask. So we asked several meetings professionals, on both sides of the divide, about their views.
Those offering automated solutions really want you to think the future is now, but the reality is more nuanced.
“I would say electronic request for proposals are used widely by some segments, like planners who prefer or need to send request for proposals out of a company-approved system” said Christine Shimasaki, president of 2Synergize and chair of the Convention Industry Council’s APEX Workgroup on eRFP. “There are also planners using other websites, such as the websites of convention and visitor bureaus and hotel brands where a planner can send their request for proposals electronically.”
Sara Stark Mikolich, owner of Stark Group, continues to send out a Word document that includes specifics on her client’s needs. Mikolich said she prefers her own format to a rigid form letter.
“I haven’t had anyone say that they wouldn’t look at the business because of the type of document I submitted,” said Mikolich.
Mae Hill is the senior national sales manager for the New Orleans Convention Center, the kind of large multi-use venue that seems ripe for electronic methods, but she says the center still receives requests on multiple channels.
“We kind of take it in every direction,” said Hill. “We get everything from the call-in leads to emails, to being sourced on platforms like Vvent or Starcite, and we do have a form on our website.”
Hill collects data on the source of leads, but electronic request for proposal is not a category. Her experience is that she receives about 50 percent of the requests through online platforms or electronic request for proposal, while the remainder arrives through traditional email or the convention and visitors bureau. Even when the request comes via electronic request for proposal, Hill says that her office responds with a traditional full-city bid, done collectively through the bureau.
Tail wagging the dog?
Shimasaki said that planners and venues drive each other toward a preferred platform; there are benefits and challenges on both sides.
Planners have the advantage of standardized responses, which eases comparison-shopping. On the venue side, Shimasaki said the system is beneficial as long as there is integration with their sales system.
“Otherwise, it will be time consuming for them to re-enter the information and manage the event information and quotes in two different systems,” she said.
While some planners complain that the system doesn’t allow for nuance or customization, overzealous or inexperienced planners often swamp venues with requests.
“The big problem is electronic request for proposal spam,” said meetings planner and expert Corbin Ball. “It is nearly as easy to send out 100 requests for proposals as it is one. Hoteliers can be overloaded and, if they are not certain of the source, may delay or not respond at all.”
Will platforms be the solution?
If lack of cohesion or integration presents a challenge to the wide use of electronic requests for proposals, an obvious solution is to have one universal system — an aggregator that can be tailored to the needs of individual suppliers and planners.
“The best example I can use is PayPal,” explained Bharet Malhotra, senior vice president of Cvent’s Hospitality Cloud. “Whether I’m on Amazon, Nike.com, or at my local coffee shop, I can use my same PayPal account. So we developed a white-label product that really simplifies the solution.”
Malhotra said one of the goals of Cvent’s product is to make things easier for the buyer, who he called the currency of the system. He believes hotels and venues agree with that assessment and want aggregation to solve the clutter.
“The whole idea of aggregation on the business-to-business side is relatively new,” Malhotra said. “If you think about people buying stuff on e-commerce sites 15 years ago, it was new and people were scared to put their credit cards online. We’re not in that nascent stage, but both meeting planners and the people putting on the event are getting better educated on the process.”
Shimasaki agreed that educating planners is one solution to the challenges. She said planners want and need competitive responses to requests for proposals regardless of how they’re delivered. At the same time, planners need to be able to communicate the value of the meeting to the convention and visitor bureau, convention center, or hotel.
“The experience between planners and [venues] has not evolved experientially,” said Shimasaki. “It’s basically time-consuming, systems don’t talk to each other seamlessly, there is always missing information needed by both planners and suppliers. It’s frustrating overall. Plus, there are so many middlemen in the process today, including hotel sales people who need to go to revenue management for decisions related to the offer.”

Electronic Requests for Proposals Have Created a Mess for Many
