hey max! my little sister is getting old enough to read chapter books and i'm blanking on what books to get her for her birthday. so i thought why not ask the author of my favorite book! any books you read as a kid that you love?
i'm so unbelievably honored that 1. you consider one of my fics to be your favorite book and 2. that you would ask my opinion on books to give to your sister. i also love this question!!! i have so many book series i loved as a kid, since i grew up in a big "you must read every single day" household.
here are some of my childhood favorites:
• lemony snicket's all the wrong questions series! and file under: thirteen suspicious incidents! me and my dad read these together when i was a kid and i'm honestly still obsessed
• a series of unfortunate events!! i loved these books as a kid and so did my brother. they are so good and have a cool movie and show to watch after you read them :)
• invisible inc. book series! this is a kid book series about this little trio of detectives and one of them is invisible. i was obsessed with these books when i was in like second or first grade
• goosebumps! i probably read fifty goosebumps books in third grade alone
• junie b jones!! i read tf out of these. i'd read an entire book in one sitting just because i loved them that much.
• raina telgemeir books! they're all so good
• diary of a wimpy kid and dork diaries are classics
• geronimo stilton
• magic treehouse books!! my favs as a kid were dinosaurs before dark and blizzard of the blue moon
• and of course of course the percy jackson books!!
that's all i can think of right now :) happy birthday to your sister!

your post about you in the 2000s makes me wonder what book series you were into- I was a goosebumps / junie b jones kid myself
I loved goosebumps! I loved scary stories to tell in the dark too, really just anything spooky. I also liked the magic treehouse books :-)

Hugh Jidiot's Weekly Whatever Blog #1
To kick off the new year, I've decided to bring back the Weekly Whatever. This was a series of posts where I'd ramble about anything and everything. I stopped when I joined Twitter and could do exactly the same thing there, but since I've left Twitter and will probably never go back, I figured I should start up the Weekly Whatever once more. My apologies if I've already shared any of these tidbits before.
Looking back on my life, I've noticed that my reading habits stretch all the way back to my childhood; my favorite genres are horror, mystery, fantasy and historical fiction, and my favorite book series as a kid were Goosebumps, The Boxcar Children, Deltora Quest and Magic Treehouse.
Going back to childhood, I was always a very creative person. Besides fiction writing I would also try my hand at nonfiction, poetry, songwriting, drawing and designing tabletop card and/or board games.
The last bit was inspired by my love of Yu-Gi-Oh, which I watched religiously as a kid. Fun fact: at the time I was unaware that the Duelist Kingdom arc was adapted from early on in the manga when the real life card game didn't yet exist and the author was basically making up the rules as he went along. So when I watched Yugi do things like have a monster stab the moon to control the tides during a duel or use Catapult Turtle to destroy a floating castle's magic ring and send it crashing down on his opponent's monsters, I felt like Bakura from Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged: "This card game is a load of bollocks!"
Goosebumps were my first ever chapter books I read as a child. My late uncle collected them, every time I'd visit my grandparents' I would go into his old room and marvel at the creepy titles and gruesome cover illustrations. Then one day when I was 7 I cracked open The Cuckoo Clock of Doom, read the whole thing in one sitting, and the rest was history.
It wasn't until I was 13 that I truly decided I wanted to be a writer, but even before then I was drawn to writing more than any of my other creative hobbies. In fifth grade my class had a creative writing assignment where we had to write a short story based on an illustration. The other kids had stories that were one or two pages long. Mine was seven.
I also had some more esoteric ways of expressing myself creatively. For example I really enjoyed minigolf as a kid, and for fun I would take some paper and draw up plans for my own minigolf course.
And that's all for now. Hopefully the two people who read these enjoyed learning a little more about myself. Peace from the heart, my friends.

Assign a popular (or maybe unknown?) Kids book series to your OCs (ex: Warrior Cats, Percy Jackson, Magic Treehouse(?))
Ooh, interesting! Thanks for the ask! This'll take some thinking, I was a really avid reader as a kid so it might be hard to choose
Okay well Kestrel is already technically from a kids/teen book series since that whole fic is based on the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull. Great series, really, I still love it as an adult and the characters/plot really hold up!
Rae I think would get Goosebumps. Her story isn't particularly spooky, but she enjoys horror books as an adult (namely Stephen King) and if the Goosebumps books had been around when she was a kid, she'd have eaten them up. Plus, there's such a particular upfront and daring style to them that I think reflects her.
Robin gets the Bailey School Kids books. I mean, a group of schoolkids trying to investigate things that they assume are much bigger than them? And in the books, it usually ends up being totally mundane, which wasn't exactly the case for Robin's little investigations... but it still works. And if I remember correctly, one of the main characters was named Melody
Jasper gets Sideways Stories from Wayside School, another one of my favorites as a kid. They're really goofy, off-the-wall stories (written by the same guy who wrote Holes), but some of them get shockingly dark at times! I remember there was one story about a guy who showed up and stole everyone's voices, and another one with a hypnotist who would just hypnotize people with the most random things, those really stuck with me. A little out-there, a little away from the ordinary, and sometimes a little dark.
Katherine grew up on comic books and graphic novels, but I'm not sure that counts. So... we'll give her Geronimo Stilton. I think she would have enjoyed the different fonts and doodles, plus all the goofy adventures in the books.
Quinn gets my long-time favorite, Wings of Fire. I can't really justify this choice, other than that it's another fantastic book series that still holds up even in adulthood, and there's a lot of darker themes in them that I was surprised made their way into a youth series. Oh, and bonus: there's a lot of queer rep and disabled rep, particularly in the later books! There's a reason I love them so much :)
Indigo.... I don't know. She's been through some serious shit, though, so we'll give her A Series of Unfortunate Events. I don't think I really need to explain this choice, do I?
Madison gets the Boxcar Children for sure. It's about this group of siblings that runs off to the woods and ends up living in an abandoned boxcar for a while, until they end up being adopted by this rich family. They made several books (I only read the first one), but it definitely seems fitting for her.
Prometheus gets the Magic Treehouse, since I think it's the most fitting to their story. I mean, travelling through time, exploring different worlds while maintaining the safety of the treehouse, it just strikes me as very suited to them.
Ophelia gets the Encyclopedia Brown books. Man, I used to love those as a kid - they were mystery/hijinks books starring this kid detective, but they put the reveal at the end of the book so you could try to guess what you think happened before flipping ahead and reading the ending. Ophelia would have loved those, I'm sure, with her inquisitive mind.

Concept: Koru takes Ori and Finch to the library.
He dislikes literature bc words give him a headache but his kids need enrichment. Ori shows Finch the Magic Treehouse, Warriors, and Goosebumps. Jdjdfbbfb

There’s got to be a term to describe that like. Extremely specific era of children’s literature where all the books were novellas printed on low quality paper, pumped out on a near monthly basis, and made for series that sometimes stretched into hundreds of books
Animorphs. Goosebumps. Bailey School Kids. Babysitter’s Club. Magic Treehouse. Series that plague public libraries and second hand book stores to this day. A genre that was nearly wiped out overnight by the success of Harry Potter, and the newfound desire for kids to read long form literature
It was like pulp fiction for kids

Other,“kid things” that more adults should do, cuz I hear y’all talk about cartoons, blanket forts, and plushies, but there’s lots of other “kid stuff” that you can, and should, do as an adult:
Pajama day- Jobs suck, let your employees show up in pjs every once in a while. I would have hated working at target marginally less if I did not always have to wear jeans to work
slumber parties/sleepovers-I mean, floor covered in sleeping bags, nobody does any real sleeping, binge several movies in one night, sleepovers. Highpoint of doing this as adults, people can get drunk, and they don’t have to worry about driving home, cuz they already planned to stay
fun shaped food-My grandmother used to make star shaped jello, and and when I asked her why she stopped doing that her response was “you outgrew them”, and I would like to call bullshit. Star shaped food is clearly superior
Dirt cups- Y’all remember those? Chocolate pudding, with cookie crumbs, gummy worms, and other stuff that I can’t quite remember. Those were fun. I want to make those with friends again
Premier parties-Not necessarily a “kid” thing, but something I think we should bring back. When your favorite show is having a season premier, invite all your friends over, make themed food to go with the show, dress up as your favorite character, or just wear whatever merch you have, I miss being that excited for a season premier, don’t you?
Scholastic book fairs-When this pandemic is over, I want book fairs on my college campus, and at my local library. I have spent the past 10 years chasing the high of the scholastic book fair, let me feel it again. Not saying they need to sell YA or adult books, it can still be goosebumps & magic treehouse, it just needs to be accessible to people my age.

Rosehip tea and Hot chocolate!
Which book did you love when you were younger?:
My favorite book as a kid was The Secret Garden! My mom got it for me for Christmas one year and I loved it! I also used to love the Magic Treehouse books, and Eerie Indiana/Goosebumps (both of them gave me nightmares as a kid but I liked them nonetheless!)!
Do you have any stuffed animals in your room?:
I collect stuffed animals, I love them very much. My house is very small however so a lot of them are at my Nana's house (I love them tho 💖). I have 7 Squishmallows in my room- a big green dragon named Julius, a bat named Mina, a sea turtle named Herb, a chick named Chickie, a grasshopper named Melon, a crab named Carbohydrate, and my beloved owl Grimoire. I also have a huge unnamed turtle plush my best friend gave me, and my big round beanie baby elephant named Thunder! If it helps picture how many stuffed animals I own, I have 103 Squishmallows. I love them very much.
