Tune in, stay safe (or don’t), and remember:
the sheriff's secret police definitely aren’t listening.

Try Tales from the Breakroom, Unexplained Encounters or anything from Eriecast Network.
Enjoy the horrors and forget when the episode ends.
ā— Do you know Japan holds events where people gather to exchange scary stories? Cool, right.

Welcome to Night Vale/The Magnus Archives au.
Hey! So @orca-in-disguise asked me to elaborate on the TMA/WTNV au my girlfriend @rainbowwscarab and I have been crafting that I mentioned in this post. I thought it was a bit too long to put in the replies, so I’m making an actual post for it! Fair warning, a good amount of it is just her and I fucking around and having fun so it’s not going to be 100% air-tight.
So this took me a few hours, a lot of procrastination, and waiting for a really bad migraine that meant I couldn’t look at screens at all to end to fully write out (I started an hour after orca made their comment) and ended up being very long. It’s your fault for giving me an excuse to talk about this lmao. I’m so sorry, it’s over 3000 words. Full rant that includes each fear and how they apply to Cecil and Kevin as well as the premise of the au itself below the cut!
The fears and how they apply to Kevin and Cecil
So in terms of justifications for Cecil and Kevin’s alignments, it mostly stemmed from the idea that Kevin fits as most of the more visceral, physical, and violent fears whereas Cecil fits in with the more cerebral, psychological ones. The main exception of this is the spiral. Honestly, I could see the spiral working for either one of them, and it could definitely be another area where they overlap, but in the end it just came down to vibes.
For the heck of it, and since I like talking my thoughts out, I think I’ll rundown each fear, how it applies here and why I assigned them to who. Forgive me for my long-winded infodumping.
First there’s Kevin. Slaughter is a bit of an obvious one. The senseless violence as well as the delight he takes in it is fair enough classification.
The hunt is similar due to the violence of it. Additionally, for the purposes of this au, Kevin also has a significantly more animalistic demeanor and instinct, given he was assigned the two main animal fears of the 15.
Speaking of animal fears, there’s the flesh. While also fitting for reasons discussed above, Kevin’s attitude towards the body, blood, viscera, and self-mutilation fits in very well here. Additionally, while Kevin is not canonically canibalistic, I really don’t think it’s much of a stretch.
Desolation’s a bit less obvious, but the attitude towards destruction as well as the general delighting in pain and suffering works well. Also, the unmoving sun and its heat that he reveres can easily be transferred to heat of fire.
Corruption is one that did not initially seem obvious, but when I began looking deeper I realized just how strong of a tie Kevin is for it. There’s the centipede tie in for insects, as well as the obsessive, cult-like mentality towards love and adoration in terms of being devoured that he talks about with the smiling god. I read a fantastic character study fic between him and Jane Prentis once (just shout if you want the link, it was great) that utterly sold me on the concept and opened my eyes to just how corruption-aligned Kevin is and how easily he’d fall to it. Also, less of an in depth character study answer, but the mental image of a centipede crawling out of Kevin’s eye sockets and in through one of the gaps in his carved smile is a fantastically horrific one that I love.
Stranger is a fun one, as Kevin upon introduction was very much portrayed as a bizarro, twisted, stranger-esc reflection of Cecil, just as Desert bluffs acts as one of Night Vale. Additionally, there’s the sense of ā€œotheringā€ yourself the entirety of strexcorp has, with Kevin’s own transformation, and their encouragement to make a better, happier, and more productive you. The lack of eyes, the carved smiles, and the masked happiness are also all very stranger.
Spiral, as mentioned above, is I think the most cerebral of the fears I assigned to Kevin (aside from the eye, though I don’t think I have to explain that one) and I could also see it going to Cecil, though the madness-inducing vibe Kevin and desert bluffs as a whole has works. Additionally, the way he twists his own perceptions and reality to align with how his own damaged mind processes things, and the way he distorts events when he presents them to others is all very spiral. I could perhaps see the spiral and the extinction swapping places or perhaps both residing on the line between the two of them, like the eye. Extinction also works for Kevin given the apocalypse-esc energy desert bluffs has and the similarities it bears to the famine world (in vibes not direct application) in one of Season 4’s extinction statements, as well as the links it could potentially have to the self-destructive nature of capitalism and how it dooms all who live under its oppression. But anyway, that’s enough of my rambling about Kevin, onto Cecil!
Cecil’s alignments, as @/orca-in-disguise pointed out, are significantly subtler and less obvious than Kevin’s, and I think this owes much to the subtler aspects of many of the fears he was assigned. While they are often very extreme and intense in manifestation, many of them at their core come from a much more subdued place. Of course, every fear can be drawn back to that kind of distinction, but just bear with me.
The dark is not very obvious, but the core of the fear of the dark is the fear of the unknown, of what might happen to you when you cannot perceive your surroundings. It’s a fear of absence of perception, and isn’t not knowing and not understanding a core theme of Night Vale as a whole?
The end is slightly more understandable. Death is a common theme that crops up in much of Cecil’s narration and in Night vale as a whole. Additionally, The End is also a fear of inevitability, of unavoidable consequence, and of the future, all prominent points in the comforting kind of existential dread Night Vale and Cecil himself employs.
The web is about control, manipulation, and unseen connections or plans. While Cecil isn’t quite a master puppeteer, there are definitely themes of control in his character, whether he be subject or object, and the theories/headcanons of him being able to influence the town and those who hear him with his Voice definitely fit in here.
The vast is one that ties in with a lot of the things Cecil talks about. There are countless times when Cecil talks about the endless and the insignificance of a single human life in the face of eternity. The repeating motif of the sky being ā€œmostly void, partially starsā€ works extremely well here too. The themes of Night Vale as a whole align very well with the vast.
The lonely works for Cecil for similar reasons above, repeated statements of the insignificance of humanity as a whole and himself in the face of the universe. Additionally, while Cecil is often defined by his relationships, he’s also been shown to be very prone to loneliness, depression, and self-isolation as shown by season 3. There have also been several moments depicting Cecil’s role in his recording booth speaking out into the air as being a quite lonely and isolating thing, completely cut off from the rest of the town he speaks his words to.
The extinction is one that works through the themes of inevitability and consequence I discussed through the end, but also because Night Vale itself as it is now with all its strangeness was at least partially created by Huntokar through the result of a near extinction event, her attempting to save it from the nuclear missile that would have destroyed it. This theme of nuclear destruction is one that is strong with the extinction and is something that runs through a lot of Night Vale’s narrative.
The buried is an odd one, and is perhaps the one that is the least fitting, but I wouldn’t say that it is completely without base. In addition to claustrophobia and being buried alive, the buried is also representative of restraint, of being trapped (literally or metaphorically), and of crushing circumstances that you cannot escape. This ties into the same sense of inevitability that I talked about above. An argument could also be made that Cecil can be viewed as being stuck in place and unable to move on from different perceptions and his own role.
Lastly, there’s the eye. Thought id leave it for the end so I can discuss how it applies to both Cecil and Kevin. I don’t think I need to discuss too in-depth about it. After all, in almost all other aus I’ve seen of a similar nature, Cecil is almost always pegged as an eye avatar. Kevin falls into this for similar reasons. Both of them have shown abilities to see and know things about their town that they should have no possible way of knowing, describing events as they happen across town, and discuss things as if they are standing there in real time. This all-seeing theme is one that ties into heavily to the eye. Additionally, they are both radio hosts. They’re both the Voices of their towns. Whether this is simply a fun way to describe the role of radio hosts or a more metaphysical title and role as many fans have speculated/headcanoned, it’s worth taking into account. The role of Voice can easily be seen as a role similar to that of Archivist. Their role is to describe their town, to bring information and events into light and spread information to those that hear them. Often they describe awful things that have happened or will happen, and forbidden knowledge is a theme with both of them.
Now that that’s out if the way, (and anyone can also take that conceit and run with it should they so desire) onto the actual plot of the au.
The au premise
As I stated in the post I linked above, the initial conception of this classification turned into a full au that spiraled (no pun intended) into much more. The au’s premise is that back when the fears as TMA knows them were relatively young and humanity was new, two monsters, two beings were created, poured into the world before the classifications for the fear were distinct. They acted as two halves of the same whole, two sides of the same coin, two different sides to Fear and they were as intertwined as any person is with their own reflection. One of them represented the cerebral; the mind and soul, and the other the visceral; the body.
Of course, to a certain extent every fear can be interpreted as both visceral and cerebral. So as previously stated, they have significant overlap and their divide is indistinct, just as the entities themselves are.
Conflict is in these two beings’ very nature, but they were never truly separated from echother, for they relied on each other just as much as they clashed against echother. I’d compare their relationship to that of the shifting mound and the long quiet from Slay The Princess if anyone reading this is as into that game as I am. Kevin would be the former and Cecil would be the latter in that comparison.
After a while, as the minds that feared them evolved, these two beings grew to have minds beyond the entities that they stemmed from and wished to explore their distinct individuality as independent beings. Eventually, after extensively exploring the diverse array of fear each could evoke, they settled down in a small deserted area in the American Midwest, close together and yet separated by space. The land itself around where these two entities settled down gradually began to warp and distort from their influence, their essence seeping into the place that surrounded them and changing the area in which they settled, as well as the people who decided to populate it. Although at first unintentionally, this created the towns of Night Vale and Desert Bluffs.
The Night Vale entity had a longing to be human. It desired to join and understand the minds that formed it, to walk among them. It started attempting to do so with various puppets it either created or fashioned from humans. Almost all of these served is simply flesh puppets it used without fully joining with, and that is when Cecil came along. Cecil was an ordinary human being. He was perhaps unusual to humanity as a whole for where he was born and had grown up, but he was no stranger than most in Night vale. The being that affected the town lived in the radio station, and it was commonplace in town for those who chose (or were compelled) to work there to act as its puppets. Attitudes towards the being varied, but most lived in fear or it. Cecil became the first puppet it used to become a true vessel, joining with the being to become both the combined whole of two parts and something entirely new.
This transformation cut him off from most of the people he was close with in town, most notably his sister Abby. Abby was incredibly adverse to this decision from the beginning and now holds the belief that the entity in the radio station killed her brother and is using him like a puppet and lying to everyone about what it is. He lived a very odd existence, mostly alone and living above most, until a very handsome man working for a strange university with affiliations to the eye by the name of Carlos showed up to research his little town.
Moving back a bit in the timeline and shifting our attention a few miles away, the desert bluffs entity had no real desire to become human. It wanted independence, it wanted to explore its own abilities, and it wanted power, but it didn’t want to become human. The humans who settles around it, like those in night vale, had been warped and affected by proximity to it (thus creating the… eccentricities of desert bluffs) and had created a religion around its worship. They saw those as having been directly blessed by it (avatars, of which there are a large number in both Night vale and Desert Bluffs) as divine, and dying by the being’s hand was the most pure way to do so. Think of it like how in Viking culture, dying in battle was the most honorable way to go. They saw fear itself as holy and they offered up their terror of it as a means of worship. The being loved this attention and the existence it had built for itself, and it was quite happy until a corporation called Strexcorp Synergists inc. moved into its little town.
Strexcorp is much the same as it is in canon save for that in this au, they’re heavily tied to the web, though with definite Stranger, Spiral, and Slaughter influences as well. I have a couple OCs I fashioned to be Strexcorp’s upper management (if anyone wants to hear about them, just ask. As evident by this massive rant I love talking about things I’ve created) who all, at least in this application, act as ties to different entities Strex is influenced by, but it’s primarily web. Strex saw the potential of having something like the desert bluffs entity under their control, but knew that as it currently was, it was too powerful to fully contain and utilize for their purposes. They decided that it would be easier to exploit if it were bound to a vessel, and so they chose their pawn in Kevin.
Kevin, a pillar of the community, one of the most devout in his worship of the entity that made its home in his town, and one of the most outspoken against Strex and their goals. Using him to bind it took out two birds with one stone, getting rid of one of their significant obstacles in taking this town, and utilizing him the exploitation of what would become their most valuable resource. And so they used him, tricking and manipulating him as the web does and effectively forcing the two to join, for Kevin to become the thing’s vessel, and weakening it in that moment just enough for them to extert their control. They bound the newly formed being to/in the temple the residents of that town had erected for its worship, caging it in the very walls that had once been home to its reverence and reducing it to a tool for their means.
Lauren, who in this is just a straight web avatar, is assigned to serve as what is effectively Kevin’s handler, keeping him under control. They use him as a symbol to control desert bluffs, utilize him in situations where his abilities are deemed useful, and offer sacrifices to him in the form of people they want to get rid of. The rest of the time, he’s kept bound and isolated, depriving him of fear so he’s kept weak enough to contain.
As a small clarification after all that: post-joining, both Kevin and Cecil are two complete wholes. They don’t act as two separate entities in the same body fighting for control. Kevin is more unstable than Cecil for obvious reasons, both because of his nature, circumstances, and the fears he represents, but also because his joining was violent and unwilling for both parties. Think Michael as the distortion for how its nature works, though in this instance Kevin didn’t die. He’s still very much himself, just more.
As the au starts, the entities before Kevin and Cecil know and recognize each other as one would recognize themself, but Kevin and Cecil as people have never met. They both know each other more intimately than any one person can ever know anyone else and are complete strangers. It has been many years, perhaps centuries, since they have seen each other.
Additionally, the relationship between Kevin and Cecil in this is intended to be romantic because my girlfriend and I are both multishippers, Radioscientology (the ship name for Kevin, Cecil, Carlos, and Charles as a polycule) fans, and we think they should kiss, but it does not have to be interpreted that way if Kevin and Cecil isn’t a ship you’re into! If you want to see them as friends or family or queer-platonic partners or something weird and metaphysical, go right ahead!
And with that, we have the basic premise of the au! If anyone wants to hear more or wants me to elaborate on anything, please let me know, but I’m getting a bit self conscious over having written over 3000 words on this, so I think I’m going to end it here! Please give me any thoughts you might have, I’d love to hear what other people think about this stilly thing I made!

Eye Bracket — Finals
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda
Cecil Gershwin Palmer (Welcome to Night Vale):
Purple eye man <3
Hes like, THE eye narrator guy for podcasts imo.
THE tumblr sexyman
Not too short or tall, not fat or too thin. With hair, a nose and eyes. Look, hes hot and sexy because he's an ambiguous gendered male pronoun character who's openly gay imminently. His hotness comes from his lack of description and his silly, whimsical nature. As a "The idea of having sex with my physical body is kinda yuck" ace, I would have sex with him irl if given the chance. He is the ONLY exception for my own minds rule. While that might not be real propaganda or whatever it should have weigh of how hot he is.
Cecil Gershwin Palmer my beloved ā™„ļøā™„ļø
Jonathan Sims/The Archivist (The Magnus Archives):
I just think it'd be funny if an asexual character won
(im ripping this from the wiki btw) John has prematurely greying hair and looks older than he is. He often looks very tired and is physically unfit, as other characters refer to him as scrawny and he tires easily from physical tasks that others perform with little exertion. he also has lots of scars.
(propaganda, spoilers for The Magnus Archives) He's a wet cat and at one point dated Georgie Barker and does date Martin Blackwood. there is also a whole tag/movement for "hot Jon rights". he may not be like, 10/10 on the attractive scale but his far off gaze has captivated me
My votes for jon tho, that wet tired cat of a man has captured my heart. He gives dilf vibes and i got a thing for those 0.o
So Jon has EYEBAGSā€¼ļøā€¼ļø I rest my case Your Honor. Vote Jon

The Magnus archives is not pulling me in yet. I'm just annoyed at the amount of tease and cliffhangers.
But it's something to listen to while I prune plants at work.
I'm sure stuff gets better explained later and I'm sure this series is meant to have a "penny dreadfuls" kind of vibe but like I'd say the worst thing about penny dreadfuls is that they were deliberately written in a way to goat the reader into buying the next issue, sometimes the writing being borderline annoyingly full of untied ends and cliff hangers.
Like vintage click bait. I don't like that TMA is following that aspect of penny dreadfuls but I probably just need to be patient.
but then I'm also not finding the character Johnanan Sims, written by Johnanan Sims, voice acted by Johnanan Sims very compelling.
Like, hey can we please stop doing this "VA has the same name as the character" thing it's giving welcome to night vale and not in a good way, Cecil had to change his characters last name because shit was getting weird with the fans. Maybe don't do that again.
He also sounds like an annoyingly pretentious spooky true crime youtuber which is making it hard to ignore he's writing and playing a character that he shares a name with. I also dislike how he talks about his coworkers. I wouldn't want to work under him tbh.
And this series is so fucking long. But I'll be patient.
If the bag of teeth doesn't get explained I'm gonna be real mad though. So so very mad. I'm in this to find out about the damn bag of teeth.
If you like this series, cheer me on, and tell me something good happens because I'm feeling let down.
For what it's worth, I'm the sort of guy who loved and listened to WTNV.... Until I went to a live show and saw the fandom in action, in person. Everyone in cosplay, people with puppets of the characters who wouldn't step aside after the meet n greet. The loudness. Then it just... Wasn't the same. The writing felt like it got seriously pander-y after that. I saw the way Cecil had to pause for the crowd to go "ooooooo" whenever he merely mentioned Caaaarlos the scientist and I was done. I liked their ship when it wasnt the whole reason people started listening.

šŸ–Š for roadkillcommunion!
WAH!!! THANK YOU?? ā™„ļøā™„ļø
@roadkillcommunion is my aesthetic/vibes dump blog for the story which I am titling Jackalope Bone Records (for now). The blurb for it is as follows:
The Jackalope Bone Records is a story about trying to remember what you've forgotten, running from what remembers you, and the monsters that lurk between the shadows of both. Set in the isolate, neverending rural landscapes of the Western United States, Charlie and Jay find that the things they try to run from only inch closer with the more distance they put between it. In their quest to find ghosts and walking corpses, they quickly find that true horror is manmade, and often sits in the space between your heart and your ribs.
(Inspired by stories like Welcome to Night Vale, Over the Garden Wall, The Magnus Archives, Marble Hornets, and 17776.)
Charlie Vance is doing her best to run from the things that haunt her. She is stubborn, headstrong, and would make a killer final girl in a slasher movie. She likes strawberries, cute things, and fun-patterned skirts. She’s also kind of a bitch to be around because she’s working thru her own stuff, and it leads to a lot of nonsense arguments and festering feelings between her and Jay. She would kill to keep herself alive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Art credit: @starstickerx
J (Jay) is trying to recover his past, and figure out why he lost his memory in the first place. He’s jumpy, anxious, and would make a red thread conspiracy board to the tune of touch tone telephone. He likes puzzles, prefers tea over coffee, and that big jacket that he’s always wearing. Even though he’s so nervous, he has a drive that makes him just as stubborn as Charlie, and while he is more apprehensive about certain things than she is, when it comes to the right thing, they find themselves on the same page.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While their disagreements are frequent and many, they don’t tend to last. They push each other, but they make each other better for it.

Fiction Podcast Recommendations
Because this is the only media I consume anymore. Let’s get the big ones out of the way first!
1. Welcome to Night Vale
The OG. This was the first podcast I really got into and I am very sentimental about it. It’s the funniest and most uplifting piece of horror media I’ve ever found, and I love it for that. And I’m obsessed with the weird worldbuilding, the atmosphere is absolutely perfect. Also, gay main character, which I pretty much require at this point.Ā
It can take a minute to get into if you really want some plot, but I promise some plot is coming.
2. The Magnus Archives
This is a great horror anthology that also ends up having a really interesting overarching plot. I’m warning you right off that bat that it is a tragedy, though, and we’re all anticipating being absolutely crushed when it ends. But! Canonically biromantic asexual main character, which we love.
Similar to Welcome to Night Vale, you’re going to have to be a little patient if you really wanna get to that plot, but it’ll get there.Ā
3. The Adventure Zone
One of my absolute favorites. It’s a D&D podcast, but no D&D knowledge is required to enjoy it (I didn’t play D&D when I first started listening). It’s funny and endearing, and also has made me sob so hard that my family thought something was wrong with me. I still think about the ending of the Balance arc, because I’ve never found an ending in any other piece of media that is so emotional and satisfying.Ā
And as far as representation goes, the first arc has a gay main character, second arc has a bi woman main character, and third arc has a main character who is technically asexual, although that hasn’t been confirmed in canon at this point. Also plenty of LGBTQ+ side characters, including a trans woman (Lup I have a crush on you <3) in the first arc and a nonbinary person in the second.Ā
4. The Penumbra Podcast
Welcome to the queerest thing I have ever seen in my life. Just straight up no cishets around, it’s beautiful.Ā
This one actually has two separate storylines. The Juno Steel one is about a private eye on Mars, and the Second Citadel is sort of an ensemble story in a fantasy setting, and I would highly recommend both of them. Like would you like to hear a noir inspired story set in space with a nonbinary bisexual detective protagonist and a homme fatale criminal love interest? You absolutely would. Or would you like to hear about a knight who is sworn to hunt monsters having an existential crisis because he’s having some feelings about a monster he just had a homoerotic sword fight with? Obviously you would. Listen to this podcast.
Anyway! Let’s get into some of the smaller podcasts!Ā
5. Death by Dying
This one is so much fun. Love the weird vibes of this creepy little town. We’ve got an obituary writer who just doesn’t even seem to realize how bizarre all the deaths he’s writing about are, I’m obsessed with it. As soon as he started reading out the condolences and they were just in-universe ads I lost it, that’s so funny to me and I immediately knew I was going to love this podcast.Ā
6. KaleidotropeĀ
Fanfiction gays, this one is for you. Here is a college that is said to be magic, where everyone will find their romantic trope and fall in love. The main characters are running a college radio show together, with one of them believing in this magic absolutely and the other being very skeptical. Will they fall in love? :)))))))
This one is so cheesy, and it’s very small so the audio is pretty scuffed, but it’s so sweet and I love it. Both of the main characters are queer and one of them is nonbinary.
7. Brimstone Valley Mall
I’m obsessed with this podcast! Nobody is talking about it and I’m obsessed with it! It’s demons working in a mall in the 90s, who also have a band together. Wtf I love that. One of the main characters is gay, and another one is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. Please listen to this podcast, I want it to get more popular so badly.Ā
8. The Strange Case of Starship Iris
This one is so sweet and I love it so much. Gay space criminals? That’s everything I love. It also just has so much heart, I want to cry. There’s a bisexual woman main character, another WLW main character, a trans man main character, and a nonbinary main character (who, yes, is an alien, but I will let it slide because there is also a nonbinary human side character).Ā
9. Alice Isn’t Dead
The vibes are impeccable. I listened to a lot of this one while I was on a road trip by myself in rural America, and that is the ideal experience. This is about a woman trucking across America looking for her missing wife. It’s so quietly creepy, and I’ve got a thing for weird Americana. And there are lesbians too, so.Ā
Also, the main character dealing with her anxiety was something that was actually really important to me. I really liked hearing about someone who didn’tĀ ā€œcureā€ her mental health problems, but grew and learned to manage them better. It was just a very important story to me, and I still think about her all the time.
10. CARAVAN
Every single person involved with making this needs to go to horny jail. I am so serious. You will hear an extended conversation about how, like all of these characters are monster fuckers, and also very audibly hear two characters have sex. So, you know, you’ve been warned.
But, all that aside, this one is about a man who accidentally ends up in this weird hell world, and has to try to figure out how to get back home. It’s really fun, but also gets pretty heavy towards the end. Definitely read the content warnings ahead of time.Ā
This one’s also queer, obviously, with a bisexual man as the main character and some queer side characters (Including Virgil who I do have a crush on. The morally dubious enbies just get me.)

listen to Camp Here & There it is a good podcast that takes place in a wacky sleepaway camp it has the same vibes as Welcome to Night Vale , Gravity Falls , and also The Magnus Archives apprently but i don’t listen to tma so that’s from what everybody else says
the camp is like . super weird there’s strange creatures sighted in the woods n off limit areas bc u’d probably die there n bodies of water that if u swim in them u’ll start glowing different colors
the main character , Sydney Sargent , is canonically a trans man whoā€˜s autistic and has psychosis so that is cool n also ! he’s awesome and i love him :]
the soundtrack is by Will Wood n is an awesome touch to the podcast !!
also ! the episodes r short , around 20 minutes long . there are only 4 out by the time of me writing this so itā€˜s easy for u to listen to them all in a day !
also i’m fixating on it kind of so if u listen to it i get to be excited abt the fact i got somebody into it

Ooh, awesome!!! I've got tons of recs, there are SO many great podcasts/audio dramas out there :)
TMA (The Magnus Archives, written by Jonathan Sims) is really incredible, it's by far my favorite. It's a British indie supernatural audio horror anthology; most episodes are short stories with plot stuff before/after and interspersed into each "statement" (story).
It's on the longer side (200 episodes each 20-30 minutes, divided into 5 40-episode seasons), so it's a bit of a commitment. The characters are pretty incredible though, the metaplot's amazing, and the "statements" are really well-written! If you're planning on listening at all, i do recommend blocking all the tags on Tumblr ASAP. There are several reeeeally big spoilers that can be hard to avoid, and it's just not the same experience without the plot twists. TMA has a rlly big fandom here, and the finale came out in like 2021. I'll absolutely live and die by this series tho, if you're at all interested I'd recommend checking it out!!
A few more pods I love:
Welcome to Night Vale (similar to CHNT, just swap "summer camp" for "small town radio station" and take out the big overarching plot)
Wolf 359 (space sci-fi comedy-adjacent audio drama)
Malevolent (Lovecraftian horror-ish audio drama about a 1930s private investigator who gets "possessed" by a supernatural entity)
I Am In Eskew (tiny little horror podcast about a really messed up semi-sentient city. very vibe-y, but not much plot and only like 3 characters. Lots of shock value in the horror)
Lost Terminal (cute little hopepunk show about this really sweet satellite named Seth. Short episodes, very chill)
@dragonboything is also a fiction podcast fan, he's also into TMA and Malevolent, and would probably have more recs!
Sorry for the crazy long post, this is smth i'm real excited about!
so i gotta ask now...
Any other fiction podcasts you're into?? I've sure you've been hearing me scream abt tma for the past year-there're SO many that I've absolutely loved!!! I'm listening to Wake of Corrosion rn and it's pretty incredible, just a very very well-written piece of audio horror.
omgomg i actually have been meaning to ask around for more podcasts to listen to!!!!
ive vaguely heard about tma but would you recommend i listen to it? and i think ill listen to wake of corrosion at some point because it sounds awesome!!!!
i need more podcasts to listen to LMAO so if you have like a list or a few reccs id be glad to hear them <3
(this goes for everyone else too!!!)

Okay most of the queer history and queer rights discussions/debates that cross my humble dash are US-centric, with the occasional terf bs from the UK, so here's some frustrations from an Australian queer kid
~homosexuality was legalised in 1994. That's right, a whopping 22 years ago
~gay marriage, however was only legalised in 2017. I remember when my parents voted on the issue– mum voted yes, dad voted no, and maintains his stance that legalising it was a mistake and impinges on his religious freedom
~conversion therapy was only outlawed in Queensland, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria in 2021. My father signed a petition to overturn the bill. When confronted about this, he doubled down on his 'religious freedom' argument, saying that outlawing church-funded psychological torture of children was another step towards banning open practice of Christianity– gay marriage having been the first. Mum, a known bisexual, took his side in this argument and urged me later to apologise for raising my voice because 'it's the way he was raised' and 'you know he was abused by them'
~Whilst I can change my name without such restrictions, I will not be able to change my gender legally until I have undergone at least two gender-affirming surgeries, with certification from at least two medical professionals of such treatments, and to get these surgeries covered by Medicare, I'd need a diagnosis of 'persistent and severe' gender dysphoria, and well-documented treatment of such spanning at least 12 months. A diagnosis is also necessary to recieve hrt.
~If and when I am able to change my gender legally, it will not be simply corrected on relevant documents, rather my birth will be re-registered and a sex-change noted on my identity documents.

@femmedionysus mentioned needing lighter, fluffier, less-ultimately-tragic podcasts than the magnus archives, and do u kno what? i think a lot of ppl can benefit from this. and i can help! a little! maybe!! generally these have at least some emotionally difficult moments, but they are lighter and appear to be heading towards a not-too-tragic ending.
(sorted into categories and lists, bcos who am i without categories and lists?)
podcasts i am fully up to date on and can vouch for up until their current end point, altho most of them are not quite done yet (there's like, potential for them to turn super sad, but in general the direction they're going in is Not That Tragic):
unseen (a series of one-character episodes all taking place in the same universe, a magical world hidden behind ours. a couple of eps are linked character-wise, but a lot of them are unrelated, individual stories. fairly gentle, tendency to end eps on a high note, cohesive & interesting worldbuilding.)
wooden overcoats (a funeral home sitcom. no, really! the funn siblings run the only funeral home in their village, until charismatic golden-boy chapman shows up with his own, better funeral home. lots of morbid humor but usually humor, altho a few episodes ARE sad and hit hard. those sad arcs do resolve with eventual happiness and found family stuff tho.)
victoriocity (features one of the actors from wooden overcoats! an alternate steampunk reality where queen victoria, um, never dies. ever. and london gets some seriously weird tech! follows an inspector and a reporter trying to solve Mysteries. there's like murders & death & stuff but the main characters do wind up safe & more or less content, even tho fleet's grumpy. kind of like, Extremely British, with the colonialist issues that 1800s london implies, but like, they try to address it sorta? it's not a major plot point)
welcome to night vale (i know i KNOW everybody knows this one....... but Things Are Generally Fine, u kno. i mean there's the occasional upsetting part. but things are fine. do skip 'a story of love and horror' to avoid what imo was one of the MOST upsettingly tragic things tho.) (confession: i have two episodes of this to catch up on, but i'm not actually THAT far behind, so i'm comfortable with its place here)
midnight radio (this one's all done actually! there is a ghost on the radio, and she starts receiving letters from a living woman. and yes ok it STARTS with a dead woman with a tragic past. HOWEVER it ends hopefully so like!!!) (in good conscience: not fluffy or funny at all. gets very serious at times. but goes towards a genuinely hopeful ending, which was why it's on here.)
the strange case of starship iris (found family revolutionaries in space!!!! shit gets heavy but they! get! through it!! i like when they get through it.) (to be super clear, it does get VERY serious, but they do get through it and judging by the narrative vibes and how the creators discuss it, they’re gonna be okay by the end. and they are mostly okay now.)
khƓra (based on greek mythology, but In Space! the witch medea is... recruited by the hero atalanta to find the golden fleece, which her dead husband jason hid. once again we start with tragic pasts, but it is heading so fast for found family, and given that the premise of the show is giving women from greek mythology better than what they had in myth..... I Think It Will End Happy)
kaleidotrope (college radio hosts talk about love on their possibly-slightly-magical campus. god it's so. it's so fluffy. full of fluff. like, legit i think the least serious audio drama i've ever listened to, it's simply just. soft. very romantic. occasionally embarrassing. FILLED with fluff.)
time: bombs (a three-episode podcast made by long story short productions after w359 as like.... an experiment? i think? about the shenanigans of a bomb squad, who are remarkably funny for... a bomb squad. there's literally bombs & stuff and some injuries, but nobody dies, nobody is tragic, one guy does not get to beat a record he rly wants to beat but he learns stuff abt Being A Better Person or w/e so that's nice.)
podcasts i am NOT fully up to date on but what i have listened to is not too horribly tragic:
inn between (fantasy found family! you know how d&d podcasts are? well, between adventures, d&d characters rest and recuperate; this is those between adventure moments, taking place in a lovely little inn.)
sir rodney the root (once again fantasy! once again found family!! funny & sometimes kinda weird podcast about some folks on a Quest that goes off the rails, god i need to catch up on it...)
interference (oh hey another d&d-inspired fantasy podcast....... huh. but! one side of the podcast happens in a reality not unlike our own! that and a d&d-ish world are colliding, and we hear two women talking to each other as their worlds connect...)
the amelia project (there's an agency that will fake your death, for a price.... no, not money, they want an interesting story! and oh boy do these clients deliver. last time i was listening there was some hubbub about secret government agencies spying on the amelia project itself...... hm.)
alba salix (okay yes another fantasy podcast......... it's a comedy, with occasional drama, abt the physician for a magical kingdom and the shenanigans of her and her two unruly assistants, and also the royal family, and also....... i was actually v fond of the mini-series between seasons, abt an orc who runs a pub, more than the main story? altho i am not caught up on either so it's possible this could reverse.)
there's also a few from the podcast marathon which, if ur not aware, was me running through the first episodes of a bunch of podcasts to see what sounded good (i will get back to that eventually....), but this means i cannot vouch for them past the first episode. nevertheless, from general tone they seem to be Not Very Tragic, so.

A handy guide to recognizing characters from The Magnus Archives
Ever wonder how to spot who’s who in fanart when there aren’t many physical descriptors given in cannon? Well no worries, here’s a handy-dandy guide to spot your fave archival staff members (and friends!) at a glance, across the multitudes of gorgeous art out there:
Jonathan Sims:Ā If Cecil from Night Vale didn’t sleep for a month and then got run over by a bus. Twice. Thinner than tracing paper. Feral, but fragile. Associated item: Tape recorder. Or twenty.
Martin Blackwood: Sweaters JumpersĀ and circles! Is he wearing a sweater jumper? Is he drawn entirely using round shapes and soft edges? Do you want to hug him on sight? It’s Martin. The definition ofĀ ā€œshaped like a friendā€.Ā  Associated item:Ā Mug of tea. (It’s for John. Even when it’s not, it is.)
Tim Stoker: Hot. He has finger guns and he’s not afraid to use them. Associated item:Ā An axe, or the aforementioned guns.
Melanie King:Ā Blindfolded. Usually short, usually angry (mood). May be wearing her own merch.Ā  Associated item:Ā There’s a knife on her somewhere. In hand, as a tattoo, at her hip - sometimes all three.
Georgie Barker: She’s got style. The rest of these motherfuckers wear clothes to function but Georgie’s put to-fucking-gether. I don’t know who decided it, but they’re right. May be wearing her own merch. Associated item: She’s usually got really dope earrings.Ā Ā
Basira Hussein: Stoic as a sphinx and probably twice as knowledgeable. Often in a police uniform, generally in a hijab. Merely glancing at her image will convey her ruthless competence.Ā  Associated item:Ā A book
Alice ā€˜Daisy’ Tonner:Ā Lean, mean, hunting machine. Many scars. Often in a police uniform. She will beat you up. Alternately: some sort of terrifying wolf monster Basira is comforting. Associated item: Raw butch energy.Ā
ā€œElias Bouchardā€: Smug DILF.Ā  Associated item: Length of pipe. Or sex toys (you know who you are)
Peter Lukas: Classic sea captain aesthetic. Healthy beard, cheap whistle around the neck. Seen most often in monochrome. Associated item: Elias’ ass (you know who you are).
Jane Prentiss: O, worm? Associated item: See above.
Nikola Orsinov:Ā Uncanny valley...but make it sexy.Ā  Associated item: Circus regalia
Michael: Lots o’ colours. Flowing blond hair from a L’Oreal commercial plus Freddy Kruger hands.Ā  Associated item: Doors
Helen: Lots o’ colours. Powerful 80′s business woman vibes plus Freddy Kruger hands. Associated item: Also doors.
Gerard Keay:Ā The gothest goth to ever goth. Lives at Goth street in Goth city, and takes the goth train every morning to work at Goth Ltd. And honestly? Good for him. He deserves to be able to pursue his interests. Associated item: A Leitner
Gertrude Robinson: The world’s most intimidating grandmother. Associated item:Ā Your corpse, underfoot. She dealt with you before you even realized what was happening. While you were reading this very post, in fact. Now you’re going in the skin book.Ā

Expanding on this (i’m Very Bad at talking abt myself)
1. I have two wonderful kitties i’ve had for many years. They are named bella (she’s black) and dusty (he’s a grey tabby) and i love them. They’ve gotten super clingy since covid which is super amusing but also a bit of an irritant but i love them so much.
2. Idk how to expand on this. I have a few friends that have known me for quite some time and i love them very much and trust them with my life
3. I love podcasts so much and talking about them andnthrjudjfjfjdkdkdjdngj one of my special interests so i get a lot of joy out of them. Podcasts i like include: The Magnus Archives, Malevolent, Red Valley, Welcome to Night Vale, Jar of Rebuke, Road X, The Bright Sessions, Lore and Cabinet of Curiosities
4. I need music to function so i’m almost constantly listening to it. I love folk, gothic country/southern gothic, and various (mostly greek mythology themed) musicals but i’ve also started getting into goth rock and it’s very Funky and brain scratchy. My favorite thing to do with playlists i make is throw in a wild out of place song into a playlist with a very different vibe. I mostly do this with oc playlists but i sometimes do it with others. (my favorite example: What does the fox say is in my horror oc’s playlist that is made up of a lot of southern gothic, mother mother, and MCR) the musical whiplash brings me so much enjoyment.
5. I. Love. BBC Ghosts. So much. I have so many quotes memorized from it and through my hyperfixation of it i also have a lot of quotes from Yonderland and Horrible Histories memorized even though i’ve never watched the full thing of either shows.
(Bonus: i love consuming specific genres of horror, but mostly creating it. And I have A Lot of ocs and i love them a lot but rarely post anything abt them but i’m Trying)
List 5 things that make you happy, then put this in the askbox for the last 10 people who liked or reblogged something from you! Get to know your mutuals and followers :3
I don’t have that many mutuals to do this with but i will try 🫔
1. My cats <3
2. My best friends
3. Podcasts
4. Music
5. Six Idiots
(Bonus two more: Horror and Art/My Ocs)

FILE 1. The Beginning of the End (liveblog)
I've been off tumblr for like 10,000,000 years, I only made this blog to make a camp here and there liveblog. I got three episodes in before I decided I wanted to do a dedicated livelog of it. It's still very new, right? I haven't interacted much with the fandom really at all because I don't want spoilers. So please don't spoil anything! I'm only ever up to date on whatever episode I've posted about most recently.
All I know about this series is that it's about a nurse at a summer camp I would've loved to have gone to as a kid. I read a post somewhere recommending it to people who were into The Magnus Archives and were looking for something new after it ended. It was also recommended to people who like the music of Will Wood...
It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize it was because he literally made the music...
I feel like such a fool.
All the characters are entities and all the places are sites??? I think I'll have to line their titles up...
I don't know how I didn't put two and two together that my guy is doing the tunes, this intro is so his vibe...
Chickadees
The main character is Sydney Sargent! They remind me a lot of Cecil from Night Vale
Sydney's diction can be a little hard to understand sometimes, but I think that's mostly because of the speed at which they talk? Are there transcripts for this series?
They were unwanted?? D:
I'm calling him Jeddy now because I think it's funny
Ah, Lucille is the Elias
The vegan option reminds me of going on field trips as the only vegetarian kid in my class... Then again loose assorted leaves is just a salad.
Pink Elephant Man reminds me of the Man in the Tan Jacket with the Dear Skin Suitcase. I don't mean to keep comparing this to other podcasts, I just have a very associative mind. Is he actually a Winnie the Pooh reference? Or, I guess, Dumbo??
Pink Heffalump Man
Aww, Pink Elephant Man sounds like he just wants someone to dance with.
Please don't stare at the sun, Sydney
Can Sydney eat toast on its own? Or is that forbidden by the curse? Does garlic bread count as buttered toast? Do flavored butters still count as butters? What about sweet butter on cinnamon toast?
Wouldn't it be fun if Joshua was actually totally chill
Jeddy has been here this whole time?
mmmmmwOwOwmmmmm
I RECOGNIZE THE SONG TO ERR IS HUMAN IN THE BACKGROUND, WHY DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO REALIZE HE WAS MAKING THE MUSIC??
I've actually never been to sleepaway camp, my family could never afford it, but it always sounded like it'd be fun as long as I had minimal adult supervision. It's fun to wander in the woods.
The Heffalump Man was in Syd's Office? D:
Or maybe Jeddy is the secret villain
Is Syd saying all this private information into the intercom system?? Is this what children are hearing on their way to bed??? You're just trying to unwind for the night while the nurse talks on the loudspeaker about a private conversation they just had with a coworker and how they're secretly very worried about the situation????
Jeddy still believes everything's normal? Either he's evil or he's the Carlos of this series
I just had the thought that I really don't want want Syd to die. I dunno what the overall tone of this series is, so I don't know how much danger the character are or aren't in.
lol the winner is named clearwater
When I was little my brother convinced me to start eating mushrooms by saying I'd grow up mega like mega mario
Goodnight, Syd!
I'm now trained to stick around until they read off the copyright thing
Also, I hope Sydney isn't saying all this into the loudspeaker in the dead of night omg
Ah okay it's a tape
Heffalump guy jumpscared Syd in their office!! D:
Elephant Man's just sad no one wants to dance with him.
Elephant Man is blond? Weirdly I hadn't even considered he had hair
Seems to me he came to the nurse to talk to them about his pica. Syd's the medical professional professional, they should really have more empathy
Syd's final thoughts: Haha, get rekt Jeddy
Jeddy! He sounds sweet
Oh, Jeddy is a bitch
Sydney used to have hallucinations?
Go to bed already Jeddy
Woah Syd copied me
So he IS Carlos!
They have a history together? They grew up together? They were childhood friends?
There's the credits!
Oh! The voice actors are also the writers.
That was a lovely episode! I can already feel a bunch of mysteries wiggling under the surface that I'll need a little time to process.
I think I'll make a full analysis of the first episode when I've relistened to it and got all my thoughts together.
Until then, see you!

Columbo Crossovers(Part 1/?, Podcasts)
Still alive, Columbo fandom? Well, this one’s for those of you who’ve migrated to podcasts, looking for a little something to listen to, that, much like the show, will keep you hooked.Ā
Tumblr media
(This is me making the list.)
For those lost, I’d suggest reading this post.Ā
This is like an assorted chocolate box of podcasts, so if you see something you like, you should definitely use it! (Don’t forget to credit me, though.) Prompts under the cut, so let’s go!Ā
(Needless to say, there will be spoilers for every single one of these, up to the point I’ve listened to, but anyway, SPOILER ALERT! Also, slight fantasy-sci-fi element here, in that Columbo owns a time machine and can travel to various fiction podcast plotlines.)
1. Welcome to Night Vale: Columbo lands up in a weird town, but not just ANY weird town. Oh no, this one has strange lights above the Arby’s, an infinite dog park, and a a scientist with perfect hair. (For the dynamics, basically, Columbo gets the feeling that while Cecil has killed a lot of people, he is still a good person. Columbo is practically BFFs with Carlos though, and the both of them keep rambling about their respective interests(classical music and science respectively).Ā
Basically, they like this stranger.Ā
2. Kaleidotrope: Being from the 70s, Columbo is initially baffled by the ā€˜Sidle-Smith magic’, but it’s oddly endearing. Much like the rest of the students, he is able to get behind shipping the hosts quite whole-heartedly. (He cracks the wholeĀ ā€˜Drew-Cal’ thing pretty quickly, but doesn’t actually tell anyone.)
3. The Magnus Archives: Columbo comes off as being Distortion-y because of his incessant rambling, but he actually serves the Eye. Make of that what you will. (Despite their initial differences, he actually gets along really well with Jon, despises Elias and bugs him at every opportunity, and buddies it up with Tim and Martin. Being like a Distortion element, he also gets along well with Helen, and sees her as a true friend.)
4. The Penumbra Podcasts: As there are two wildly different stories going on here, this will have two parts:Ā
The Juno-verse(Juniverse?): This one is entirely up to imagination, as both Juno and Columbo can be adapted into infinite varieties of detective stories. (Juno is a dramatic, also jealous lady, but he finds the little detective kinda cute, Rita fluffs his(Columbo’s) cheeks incessantly, and Nureyev just enjoys having a partner he can ramble with/at).Ā
The Second Citadel: Again, much like the Juniverse(yep, I’m sticking with that now), SC has a very adaptable storyline. (Marc would be pretty indifferent to Columbo, actually, though he’s glad to have someone who understands the trials of the Police exam. Talfryn would be overjoyed to have someone to talk to who’s genuinely nice, and isn’t Marc.)
5. Wooden Overcoats: Columbo goes to Piffling Vale for a bit of work, and is absolutely baffled by the the fact that people keep dying there all the time. He talks about this to the missus, every chance he gets, and she’s reasonably fed up ofĀ ā€˜these fancy Channel Brits who keep killing each other!’. (He’d get behind the Funn twins initially, then does a 180 and hones in on Marjorie. During his visit, he also chats it up with Agatha Doyle, and despite finding her rather incompetent, he still likes her and her sweets.)
6. Victoriocity: Columbo lands up in season one, is amazed at the size and wonder of Even Greater London, and is immediately rescued by Fleet and Clara, before his brain collapses in on itself. The shenanigans that ensue are both wacky and heartwarming, much like the podcast itself.(He’d get along with both of them very well, even if in different ways.)
7. Death by Dying: Columbo needs a break. He’s just come off from a very stressful case, and he needs to SLEEP. Call it wishful thinking, call it serendipity, but before he knows it, he lands up in Crestfall, Idaho, and meets a certain dramatic-but-well-intentioned Obituary Writer(@deathbydyingpod). They run around for a while solving cases together, and talk about the things that interest them most, as well as theĀ ā€˜perils associated with the job’. It’s a fun little visit, and eases off their burdens, atleast temporarily.Ā
8. The Bright Sessions(Note: This only includes TBS proper, as I don’t really know how to fit Columbo into the sides and haven’t really listened to the AM Archives, or the College tapes yet.) : Columbo is an Atypical(duh) with the ability to witness all events, be they past, present or future. According to Dr. Bright, he’s officially a Class E, but is actually a Class A, with a reasonable control of 6. Besides, look at the guy, Wadsworth. Does he look like he could hurt anyone? (As for dynamics, just like with Kaleidotrope, he’s pretty confused about Caleb and Adam, but is happy for them nonetheless. All the counselling women(Dr. Bright, Sam, Chloe) find him endearing, and though he gets RANCID vibes from Damien, he gets that he’s coming from a really dark place. Columbo hasn’t met Mark yet, but that’s mostly because everyone’s still in therapy.)
Ā Well, that’s about it, for now. Part two will be coming up very soon.Ā

Oddly Specific Horror/Spooky Podcast Categories
Podcast features different characters telling their story. Man gets turned into a tape-recorder due to curiosity. He gets abused by boss and treated like a monster by co-workers. Tapes mention a very competent woman. Lots of mentions of entities, rituals, and how much capitalism sucks. Has humans trying to one-up each otherĀ supernaturally. Also, aĀ ā€˜polite’ old man that thought his employees’ lives were expendable gets killed on-audio. Latest season (as of 2019) features a two-person, supernatural road trip. Lots of transformations and body horror. Features loneliness, work place hostility, and canned peaches inflicted upon a boy that made friends with an animal in the archives:
The Magnus Archives, Archive 81
WLWOC podcast where the main character has one-sided conversations with her love interest, where she (in earlier episodes) curses at her. Main love interest isn’t present at the start, even though the podcast is named after her. The main character goes on a quest to find her love interest, despite being told she didn’t want that. The podcast really captures a feeling of isolation in a strange place. Relationship has a ā€œdon’t go where I can’t followā€ vibe.Ā Lots of mentions of cannibalism. Features exhausted lesbiansĀ fighting against unfair systems:
Mabel Podcast,Ā Alice Isn’t Dead
An LGBT radio host from a small town shares very light hearted stories. Radio host soon falls in love with a listener interested in the supernatural. It’s later revealed that the radio host has been spending more time in their studio than with other people, until they met their love interest. (Spoilers:) Also, they’re stuck in a time loop, and have been denying the weird things around them for a long time out of fear andĀ ā€˜comfort’. They’re actually technically supposed to be dead. Lots of Yearning. Features a quote about taking chances after the radio host talked about someone they loved and nearly travelled togetherĀ with, making me emotional for the rest of the night:
