Little bit of (slightly incoherent) background info for this snippet :)

This is canon, but it's part of the "general prequel" aka anything that doesn't actually happen in amsabyh.

This is a soulmate/urban fantasy/superhero AU.

Scott and Pearl are soulmates.

Pearl is currently in the Underground, which is the shady like. below-surface area of the city where all the shady stuff happens and info is hidden in.

Pearl wants to find more info on the Canary Prophecy, but that's not mentioned in this.

I did just rly want to write a fight scene

Before this scene, Pearl has gotten cornered by a ton of bandit people who are definitely gonna kill her.

Your magic can heal you, but it also draws on the life force of your soul.

Scott and Pearl's soul ability is telepathy, meaning that they can hear each other's thoughts and motivations all the time, in addition to almost-but-not-quite having the other's senses.

Pearl totally should be dead from this.

Pearl gets really panicked in this, meaning that her thoughts are the ones almost completely dominating the soulbond.

She's not quite a vigilante at this point. This is one of her first excursions to the Underground.

The world narrowed to only the expanse of Pearl’s senses. Scott’s agonized screams became background music to her fight scene. Time blurred as Pearl dodged and weaved through the masses, holding her wings tightly to her back, stabbing and slashing where she could. People in black clothing shot at her with guns and bows, narrowly missing her most of the time due to Pearl’s panicked magic sparking out of her.

She ran, crouched under the rather low cave ceiling. This was not how she expected her first excursion as a vigilante to go. She ran through the people, who shot and stabbed and shot and stabbed at her, narrowly missing most of the time, and nicking her occasionally. Blood pumped through her heart, her veins, her arteries. Her head throbbed from tuning out Scott.

She ran. She wasn’t this good. She couldn’t do this much longer, even with the use of some magic. Her head pounded. Her body hurt. There was so much going on, the world falling into pieces around her. Her vision was splotchy. She tried to fight, to blast her magic out of her hands, but it didn’t— It didn’t work.

A sharp pain stabbed Pearl in the gut. She couldn’t hear her own screams, but she could finally hear Scott’s agony in her mind.

PEARL!

Scott’s incoherent screams of pain powered her through sprinting through the rest of the bandits, even as she was crouched over, clutching her stomach desperately to keep her organs inside of her.

PEARL PEARL— PEARL WATCH OUT!

Pearl ducked as a bullet whizzed past her head.

Thanks, she sent quietly to Scott. For the first time, she had no idea what Scott was doing, since his energy was clearly being violently depleted by her.

Drop. Roll.

Pearl followed the instructions, rolling into people’s legs and slicing at their ankles.

Run.

She got up, and sprinted through the throes of people. A bullet shot into her left elbow, and her arm dropped from her gut without her consent.

Shit. She vaguely thought of her mom and mama, of Grian and Lizzie and Jimmy. She was going to die here. Without anyone knowing where she was or how she died.

DON’T FUCKING GIVE UP NOW, PEARL!

My elbow’s been shot, Pearl thought distantly, even as gunshots echoed around her. She only felt the impact and not the pain when a bullet shot into her back.

Use your magic, Scott hissed mentally.

Sparks flew out of Pearl’s knife, slicing at people even as she limped through the crowd, getting more and more bullets stuck in her back. And front. And anything that was exposed.

I can’t, Pearl thought miserably, as her head ached from the magic and the bullets and the screaming Rivendellian in her head. Her magic couldn’t run out of her knife anymore. Her magic was too focused on keeping her blood in her body and her wounds relatively healed.

Pearl. You’ve got this.

Pearl forced explosions of magic out of her body, shoving tons of people out of the way. She pushed harder and harder, searching in her body for anything, anything that could help.

Even as her magic drained her, and she put a shield up around her, she kept searching for anything to help. Bullets rained down on her shield, shattering it piece by piece. Nothing was going to fucking work.

She was going to die here, she realized. And—

She found something. Some reserve of magic she hadn’t known was there, and she tugged on it and expelled it out of her body.

These screams weren’t her own. The feedback loop of Scott screaming in her head and apparently out loud were synonymous and took up her entire brain. She kept blindly shoving the magic out of her body, her soul.

She got up, and sprinted through the people, throwing the magic into their faces. People collapsed like a house of cards around her. Everyone fell. No one was spared.

The screams in her head only got louder as she drew on more magic. She shot the magic out of her soul, into the world. She sprinted through the people, hoping desperately that this was the way out.

Go up, Scott’s pained whisper broke through the screams. Shoot up.

Scott had yet to be wrong, so she shoved the magic through the roof above her as the screams continued. The ground was far beneath the surface and Pearl shot the magic through the ceiling, up and up, and she chased it, opening her wings and flying through the tunnel.

And eventually, oh so eventually, she saw the night sky, the stars glinting in the distance. She flapped her wings, desperately shooting up and letting the magic go as she soared into the sky, looking around for a roof to land on. She swooped and dove through the sky, and crashed onto the roof of some building relatively far from her escape.

She sat on the roof, breathing heavily as her heart beat fast. She waited for her heartbeat to slow, breathing in deeply as she regained her vision, and that vision adjusted to the darkness of the night.

She stood up on wobbly legs, ignoring the pain she felt. Scott’s thoughts were quiet. It was possible that he was asleep. It was midnight when Pearl had left her house, and it was probably around one o’clock now. She looked over the side of the roof to where she thought she exited the Underground.

Pearl rubbed her eyes as she looked at the buildings in that direction. There was an explosion of ice and snow around a gaping hole in the ground. Last she checked, she didn’t have ice powers.

She walked backwards, and Pearl hissed in pain as she remembered all the bullets that had been shot into her, the knife she’d gotten stabbed with in the gut.

She hesitantly lifted up her shirt, which was completely soaked through with blood, and holy fuck, that was a deep wound. She…

Was that her stomach? Holy—

Pearl vomited on the roof of the skyscraper.

okay i do have one thing to say about Truth Scrapper. id5 has cited brandon sanderson as a worldbuilding inspiration, and one of his books, warbreaker, features a magic system that has a lot to do with color!

i don't know if id5 has read this book in particular, but if she has, then she probably would have thought about it while creating TS's magic system. though who knows if it was an inspiration or an "oh fuck i better make sure not to be too similar" or both! (but that's only if they've actually read it, which i'm not sure of, bc iirc they've only mentioned the stormlight archive by name — though in my experience anyone who has read that huge series has probably checked out some of bsand's other works as well.)

edit: id5 says she hasn’t read it, lol. tbh now i’m even more curious to see how the magic systems end up comparing…

here's a description of warbreaker's magic system off of the wiki:

All individuals are born with a single Breath, which can be willingly transferred or given away to another individual. A Breath can be thought of as a soul, or as the manifestation of the 'sixth sense'. A person with no Breaths is called a Drab. Drabs find it difficult to perceive color and do not experience the 'sixth sense' or the odd sensation resulting from someone watching one unobserved. The prominent use of magic on Nalthis is called Awakening, and is reliant on the presence of color and verbal Commands given by the magic user, as well as the use of Breath. Heightening - A person that holds multiple Breaths gains certain innate abilities, such as perfect pitch, [perfect color recognition] the ability to sense life, and a resistance to disease. The various amounts of Breath required to obtain these abilities are referred to as Heightenings. Awakening - The use of Breaths to bring inanimate objects to life, draining color from nearby objects. The actions of the Awakened object are dependent on the Command used at the time of Awakening. notably, the world of TS seems to be primarily greyscale but with some saturated objects, which is the opposite of warbreaker's world where most objects have color, which can be drained via magic. unless most of the color in TS has just already been used up...

Knickle

Cucumber- 17, he/him, gay. He’s chill and pretty punk. Very laid-back and cares nothing for rules. He just lives his life day by day.

Suitclover

Tote Bag ‘Lucky’- 6, she/her. A pretty good mix of her moms personality wise (Right now at least) She’s compassionate, silly, and generally happy-go-lucky. She’s just a compassionate and loving kid! What more is there to say?

Nickloon

Metal Balloon- 16, he/they, achillean. He’s sarcastic (WONDER WHO HE GETS THAT FROM HMM-) and really good with mediating outside conflict. They have a really strong moral compass, so that can cause him to be very judgemental towards those who are ‘wrong’, and that can cause conflict between him and others.

Marshapplebow

Candy Apple- 16, she/her, pan. Bit of a petty mean girl but she cares fiercely for those close to her. She can acknowledge her faults, like her impulsivity and knack for causing conflict, but doesn’t let go of grudges.

Strawberry Marshmallow- 12, they/them, queer. They’re a bit geeky, and they’re pretty extroverted. However, they are also a bit chaotic. Think Candy Apple Cookie chaos but a good person.

Payjay 

Paper Cup- 16, he/him, bi. He’s going through a big mean streak— prone to making a lot of big, teenage hormone induced mistakes. So, until he grows the fuck up, he’s a dick. He’s only really attached to one person, everyone else can die and he’d barely care.

Cutting Board- 12, she/her, lesbian ace. Headstrong and fierce, she often argues with her older brother. Cutting Board is protective but relatively unempathetic to people they don’t know/don’t like. She holds grudges

Origami- 10, they/them. They’re kinda the only ‘normal’ payjay kid, they’re responsible and kind-hearted, though they get it broken a lot because they wear that heart on their sleeve.

Saltpep (Broken up)

Basil- 9, she/her, questioning. She feels like there's no space for her with her expressive moms, especially Salt, who’s her primary caretaker, so she’s quite timid and awkward. She doesn’t feel like she really fits in, there’s only two people who she feels ‘normal’ around.

Pepaco

Jalapeño- 6, she/her, she’s also disabled (born partially deaf, but became blind in one eye and mute from an incident). Because of the accident, she’s quiet, she’s also nervous around strangers and people who can’t sign due to being unable to communicate with them. Jalapeño is very outgoing and happy with people she knows, however.

Soapmic (Broken up)

Earbud- 15, they/them, sapphic. They're very loud and mischievous, they really enjoy playing the drums with their ‘cousins’. They’re prideful and confident.

Tacomic

Guitar- 13, she/her, ace/aro. She is serious and charismatic, she’s a fantastic actor too, able to play emotional and dark moments in one second and back to fun and silly in the next. Guitar is quite mature too, but she’ll usually be very stubborn; especially when it comes to her viewpoints and opinions.

Comedy Gold

Medal- 15, she/her (uses he/him around adults, she’s not ready to come out yet), pan, poly. She feels… awkward. A lot of her personality pre-realizing she is trans has become muddled, she’s nervous and doesn’t know how to fit in anymore.

Cabby (There’s no other parent. Don’t question it.)

Recipe- 15, she/her, bi. Recipe is really sweet, overly sweet, and she forgives the people who hurt her. She’s also practical, she likes everything organized in a very specific way. She will latch onto people and often develop romantic feelings for them, she’s a hopeless romantic after all! But when she feels rejected she can lash out in various ways, yet quite passively

Candlestick ‘Sylvia’- 15, she/they, bi, poly. Sylvia is… a bit of a mess. She’s gone through a lot and so she has protective walls up. If you don’t know her, she can be cold as hell and very unforgiving. But she’s also a bit silly when she wants to be, and is pretty compassionate. She’s protective of her loved ones and is pretty fucking scary even at the slightest perceived wronging of them.

Candelabra- 6, she/her. An absolute sunshine child, she’s sweet and outgoing and looks up to her really cool big sister. She loves to come up with games and stories to play with her friends (though she often puts herself as the center of the story). She has bratty moments and is prone to bursting out into tears at the smallest discrepancies, but is otherwise very kind.

Amethyst- 2 months, she/her. Too little to have much of a proper personality

Lightbrush

Lumi- 15, she/fae, pan, poly. Very much like her mom, silly girl but she doesn't have the depression. She’s vibing and incredibly excitable, she’ll drag faer partners around to dates and such because she really likes going out with them. She’s very forgiving, and can be a pushover because she dislikes big conflicts

Lava Lamp- 15, all pronouns, doesn’t know nor care, he’ll date who’ll she’ll date. He’s pretty serious and blunt about things, though a bit more quiet. She isn’t a fan of physical touch unless from their twin sister. Xe’s pretty protective over her in the way only a sibling can be.

Torch- 8, he/him. He’s emotionally sensitive, just not in the angry way like Paintbrush. He cries a lot and has big emotions, and cares very deeply for the people he loves. He is very laid-back in some aspects, however. He’s willing to go with the flow and do whatever. Even disregarding his own wants at times.

Tearing

Peppermint Tea- 15, he/him, Omni (fem pref), ace, poly. They’re incredibly sweet and very oriented to the people close to him. They have a chronic illness that’ll flare up every few months but it makes him feel insecure, like he’s not good enough for his parents (Especially Lifering, despite his dad’s reassurance, Peppermint can’t do too many physical activities and feels like they’re not the son Lifering wanted.) So he has kinda… pulled away from his parents.

Fantube

Database- 14, she/all, sapphic. Database is very silly and goofy, he curses a lot. She took a little bit of both of her parents' nerd interests. She’s fascinated by science, but prefers theorizing about it. However, due to her intelligence, she can be pretty arrogant. She believes that she’s a prodigy. Currently, she likes studying Sylvia and her/her family's abilities. Though she’s calmed down over the years. They enjoy gaming too, and they’re good at singing.

Starchart- 10, he/she. Starchart likes more practical sciences as opposed to her sister, specifically astrology (For obvious reasons) and he’s a good kid. She’s responsible most of the time, but has mischievous moments.

Flask- 7, she/her. Absolute sweetheart, quiet little darling. She enjoys creative things more than her siblings. She’s shy and pretty good at resolving the little kid conflict that sometimes comes up.

(I don’t ship all of these deeply anymore (hence the broken up status, if I don't ship it anymore but I'm attached to the kid, they'll be just broken up and co-parenting. There's also another route where I do ship a pair but I don't have idea's for their kids/I don't think it'll fit into the main timeline so there are one or two canon ships just without kids. I think cayde is a textbook example of a character the writers didn't really seem to understand. like if he's supposed to be a kinda goofy guy who projects a mask of bravado and charm to cover what he sees as his weaknesses then why are you writing him like bad deadpool. tfs did him well though

Tbf to Cayde, I don't dislike him because I think he's poorly written, I dislike him because I just absolutely despise that kind of character to begin with, and then my dislike was made worse by a combination of him acting like a smartass when he was in a very serious position of power + the obnoxious nature of his fans. Like, I can't stand Deadpool (or any Marvel movie, tbh- I'm entirely being a snob here and I know it, but Marvel movies are the peak of bad-quality, sterotypically American braindead drivel), I can't stand that one guy who tries to teach you how to fight in Monster Hunter Rise, I can't stand any character that behaves like that. It's not a Cayde-specific issue here. It's entirely because I'm a tightass who likes serious, tragic plot arcs with serious characters and dry, dark humour where it's well-placed, and I don't want to make it seem like that opinion is any better than the people who DO like more lighthearted, silly things

That being said, I do think that one weakness writing goofy characters that the Bungie writers DO have is that they tend to overdo it. For example, I have no problem with Nimbus being silly goofy because they're a young initiate in a city that hasn't really seen significant warfare for hundreds of years til now, but if they'd leaned into them shoving down their grief more after Rohan's death as foreshadowing to the exotic mission where they DO break down, then I think it would have come across a lot sooner. Same for Cayde- if they cut back on the cringy one-liners and the funnyguy mask by even a little bit to show more and more of the depressed side that he'd had in the lore, then he would have been way more tolerable. I actually really enjoyed him in FS, and that's because I thought that his serious, 'okay kids stop playin' around' sorta tired dad vibe was VERY well suited for being the Hunter Vanguard. If he was like that more in the base game, or at least had that part of him shining through more instead of shouting about how the Eliksni are smelly over coms, then I might have actually felt something other than stark relief when the fucker died in Forsaken

I dared not speak it, but. My greatest fear. Was the fact that Henriette's status is still Bad. Death flag looming over her. Askr and Embla are on the cusp of the long-awaited peace treaty. Veronica semi-recently got an updated portrait, to signify character growth.

My worst fear is that they kill off Henriette (WHO IS. ENDLESSLY FASCINATING TO ME and also it's SO COOL to see FE lords navigate their lives/family drama w An Alive Parent), to make way for King Alfonse. And like. They were p on the nose about King Alfonse. In the trailer.

Now for an entirely Me thing like it is so specific and so petty. But I completely lost interest in Dragalia Lost when Euden got his updated portrait, all mature-like, to signify character growth/growing into himself whatever whatever. But for me, the BIGGEST appeal to Euden was that he was just a little guy!!!!!! Up against SO MANY HORRORS!!!!! But he was still extremely capable and had good friends on his side and made it Work.

Now, Alfonse is a pretty different character archetype than Euden. I can acknowledge that, thing is I have considered him to be an underdog in my head but like. There's no denying he grew up too fast and already fit the "mature and capable" archetype (much more than Euden esp, their whole thing acknowledged that too)

But like......... idk maybe I'm just autistic and don't like major changes LMFAOOOOO 🧍 And I'm certain he'll grow on me.... his art IS super pretty........ but you will never hear the end of it from me. If they finally axe Henriette. After ALL they've done for her........ can it just be like. When a story relevant chara "dies" on a map in one of the permadeath games. Like losing Soren in PoR/RD. He's still There, just. Roll credits he was too injured to be deployed. Like. Can Henriette just maybe not fully recover (unfortunate) which makes it so that Alfonse has to take up the mantle. Please. Please. Please.

i'm suffering under the curse rn BUT. i am 3 episodes in to The Magnus Protocol and so far my thoughts are that it seems pretty good! on the one hand i should probably do my best to separate tmagp from tma but at the same time, i mean, the only reason i'm listening to tmagp is bc of prior attachment to tma, so it's interesting to me to contrast and compare them (though in all fairness it's been a while since i listened to tma).

the new cases are definitely cool so far in terms of allowing for more formats, i wonder if we're gonna get any future explanation for their eloquent presentation like we did in tma since idk if there's any hints so far at what the whole worldbuilding deal is with that so far in tmagp.

i will say that- do to the different formatting and immediate bigger cast who gets more focus and whatnot- tmagp feels more 'TV' in a certain way. which isn't a pejorative statement and i actually really dislike it when ppl assume something being 'TV' means it's low quality or shallow, lol. tmagp is a good example of something feeling 'TV' but it's a notable difference and is casting my mind back to the discourse/discussion about a tma tv adaptation and what that would look like back when archive 81 got one. i imagine it'd feel a lot more tmagp inspired.

cast is cool so far! i admire alice's actress for being able to pull of the extremely tumblrific dialogue (which i know is on purpose but was also VERY off-putting to me at first- it's the kind of thing that i love when written but spoken aloud in a fictional setting sometimes raises my hairs for some reason). i already love gwen, she's defs gonna be the toxic woman i get attached to and then regret it (assuming i listen to more episodes which i hope i do? i'm not great at it but i do like finishing things, my brain is just pulled into all directions rn if that wasn't already apparent). Colin you're great, i can't wait to watch you break down. Sam you're great too in a way that your personality rn makes me very excited for your potential future corruption arc (obligatory reminder i'm only 3 eps in and just making educated guesses based on what jonny and co did for tma, though i do acknowledge that there's a lot more fingers in the proverbial protocol pie rn)

in general i'm curious about the direction of the show, namely how they're gonna make it tragic in a way that's different to tma? bc i always maintain that the beauty of tma is the slowburn, and how everything happens so slowly that by the time you realise what path we're on, it's too late to stop any of it, and the more you learn about these people and this world, the more you realise it was always going to end like this, even if it didn't have to.

it's a tough feat to pull off and the inherently different structure of tmagp makes me wonder if they're gonna have to pivot what kind of tragedy this is. it's probably apparent right now to anyone who's properly caught up but as for me? i'm curious and cautiously interested. idk if i'm ever really gonna get involved with the fandom like i did with tma (bc that was a mostly great but also wild and formative experience for me and in general i'm bad at being multifandom no matter how much i wish i could be bc it would make my life sooo much easier. but unfortunately the shape of my autism (title of my new movie and/or hit single /j) does not allow for it with any ease. only struggle)

anyway i have an essay on political cinema to write so i really need to close this window lmao. will perhaps consider some kind of liveblog or sequel post to this as my listening progresses

(since when did we get a mailbox?) the sound of a old hinges and a paper being withdrawn. [we've always had a mailbox, we've simply never received mail.] the paper is plucked from hands with a (hey!) {oh, give me that.} grabbed again, an envelope ripping open, a head tilted in confusion.

{it just says hi?} a bewildered look around the front porch from several sets of eyes. {uh. yo. i guess.} [are we not going to ask about how the psyche is receiving mail?] (nope, it's the most interesting thing that's happened here in ages. hello out there!)
