Maker's Mark Private Select

Maker's Mark is a fine bourbon. Damned good whisky by any standard. And true to the founders' Scottish heritage, whisky from this distillery is spelled without an "e." 

My daughter was craving barbecue for dinner and I had a hankering to go along with the BBQ idea. Scotch whisky is my preferred dram most times, but bourbon goes best with barbecue and I'd been itching to try this bottle which I bought in June for a few weeks now. Well, this 55.5 ABV version is top shelf and did not disappoint! 

A deep, rich caramel color with a smooth and sweet flavor, no burn notwithstanding the high ABV, and plenty of classic sweet fresh oak bourbon flavor, which is bolstered with oak staves in the virgin American oak barrel for this expression. This dram easily stands up to  smoked meat and tomato and vinegar based sauce. The finish was nice, with sweet vanilla lasting on the tongue, ended only by the next taste of succulent pork spare ribs with sauce. 

For anyone who hasn't experienced Maker's Mark, but wants to try a serious bourbon at a reasonable price (@ $50-55), I'd recommend skipping the classic flagship edition and go straight to the Private Select. This is a very good example of what bourbon is supposed to be! I prefer bourbon on the rocks and had about 5 smallish ice cubes in the heavy pour.

I'm a huge #wheated Bourbon fan. I Like most of the major distilleries bottlings. #larceny, #MakersMark #OldFitzgerald, #RebelYell SIB, and even the overpriced #JeffersonsOcean wheated batches 15 and 19 (that I theorize are most likely #Makers. My favorite brand #WLWeller unfortunately has become a new element called #unobtanium. I refuse to pay silly money for #Weller products or #pappyvanwinkle for that mater because it's all #distlled, #mashed, #barreled, #aged, and #bottled at the famed #buffalotrace Distillery that is historic and 10's of years old. They claim to be be the #Original #wheatedbourbon. Semantics aside let's talk about things we can actually walk into a store and by without spending $20k dollars a year just to get a weller12 for $200 or the opportunity to shove a bottle of #WilliamLarueWeller up your ass every few years for $700 to $1000. #MakersMark is always available. For under $100 you call litteraly take home a gallon of the stuff. Then there is #Makers46. Yeah come on! Is there a better sub $40 wheater out there? Back to that wlw it's just a barrel proof offering of weller. #makersmarkcaskstrength is always available. I think on the high side it may cost $60 and as we call it MMCS is fantastic. We asked and #BobSamuals answered. They brought out these custom barrel programs. #MakersMarkPrivateSelect is not cheap. I've picked up several bottled between $69 and $89. Ihave yet to have buyers remorse. Find a store that makes solid picks and take a case home. From my experience the picks that are heavy the makers 46 staves tend to really shine. #holyfark I got so say @Chula_seafood is a life changing experience. When a friend said she was going down to grab #freshtuna and #freshsalmon who wants to split it, I was like #putmeincoach. #earthday2021 and after spending all day inside #makersmark with @johnniethescot and @committed2makers doing our #makersmarkprivateselect barrel pick with @uptownspirits we were all pretty drained.
