I very much am someone who doesn't go with the "There is no platonic explanation for this," line of thought, because well, no, yes there is I'm just choosing to see this as gay

I just wanna say because my post about it blew up a bit that one of the reasons I personally really connect to and appreciate queer storytelling that doesn't have a primary focus on romance and intimacy is because I'm a bisexual who's been single for most of my life. romance and intimacy for myself is not a priority for me (no I am not ace, I'd appreciate this post not be derailed as a post about being ace thanks). it's just not something I prioritise, and some of that is by choice and some of it is honestly just luck not being on my side. I love stories about how being queer affects your whole life because despite being single it really affects mine. Being queer informs how I dress, what I talk about, how people see me, how I see them, where I work, who I'm friends with, etc. and that's not me saying that queer intimacy or portrayals of it are not important or a central part of queerness - they are. It is. gay sex and intimacy is beautiful and radical and so fucking important to celebrate in a world that generally does the opposite. But what bugs me on a personal level when ppl say films about gay characters who don't engage in gay intimacy "aren't gay enough" is that...yk being gay is something big and inherent and true about me in so many ways as it is for so many people. So it's nice to see that reflected back to you, and I don't like that the comment "not gay enough" implies that queerness is only a very narrowly defined experience. When I watch queer shows or movies where intimacy is not the primary focus, it's comforting for me to know that, as well as my romantic and sexual desires, the other things that being gay defines for me are also experiences that connect me to this community. whether that's something as complex as shame, or as frightening as navigating homophobic environments, or as fun as hanging out with other gay ppl, or as interesting as discovering a new way your queerness impacts your life, or just figuring out how to express yourself - it's all a part of queer life too. The earliest queer media I related to was movies with queer subtexts like high school musical, Billy Elliot and whip it that were about how being bisexual or gay in general impacts your relationship with gender expectations. And this is honestly still a major thing I look for in queer stories and the main thing that speaks to me because that's a huge thing in my life that's inseperable from being gay. I agree everything can be gayer, but also just because gays aren't having sex in whatever you're watching that doesn't mean it's gay enough. it means you've got a skill issue. idk sorry that every aspect of my life being enriched and irrevocably changed by being gay doesn't make you horny so it's not gay enough I guess

hey slug,
whats ur opinion on the dh trailers?
Let's give them a listen! I'm currently in public waiting to catch a train, so I may breeze through this a little faster than usual.
Sasara's Laughin' Hope
(17 seconds in) Already obnoxious. (said with affection) Perfect for Sasara. Clashing dreadfully with the country song the café I'm in just started blaring.
(23 seconds in) Wait, no fancy subtitles? Channel Hypnosis Mic, you can't do this to me :(((
(30 seconds in) Oh okay there they are. I guess the earlier bit didn't have them because it was just snippets of other songs.
(33 seconds in) "So painfully aware of social mores it wraps back around to acting inappropriately" Cheers, bro, I'll drink to that. I like it that Sasara's acknowledging it outwardly to more than just himself or Roshou.
(45 seconds in) Man's opening tf up. You love to see it.
(52 seconds in) This song is too damn catchy to be listened to in public.
(1 minute in) "Gimme a light"... I wonder what that's supposed to mean. As in, light my cigarette? (That one gay-ass SamaSasa cigarette panel comes to mind.) Shine a light on me/illuminate me?
(1:08) I'm not a big autotune fan, but I'm kinda vibing with this.
(1:11) "Laughin' when I'm in pain, laughin' when I'm feeling fine" Homie is going THROUGH it
(Overall) I like Sasara saying the quiet part out loud--not just to himself, but to an audience. (Because it seems like most of his songs are performances, right?) Also a bop. Very fun!
Roshou's On My Way
(0 seconds in) All I can think about is that Phil Collins' room
(13 seconds in) I have literally no idea what to make of this, musically.
(33 seconds in) ...This feels like an anime ending. I think that's my only takeaway thus far. It's like...scrambling my brain. This isn't a bad thing. I'm just very...intrigued?
(39 seconds in) Okay the backing beat helps immensely.
(1:35 seconds in) Ohhhhhhh okay the "on" is from 途中. I think the vibe this title is supposed to evoke is kinda like "Work in Progress."
(Overall) I actually quite like this in terms of plot! It's a very hopeful song for Roshou and contrasts quite a bit with Sasara's song--he's openly acknowledging his issues and facing them head-on instead of being like "I use laughter as repression :) for the depression :)" The part starting from 1:29 is like: I'm still on my way Still hung up on the future Retying my shoelaces Only enemy to speak of is myself Only point of pride to speak of are my many failures All the answers I wrote that I went back and marked wrong Of course I wish I could back and do things differently, but I look up and watch the airplane shooting through the sky. Stop saying all the time: "Crap, what have I done?" "Crap, what do I do now?" Get out from inside my own head, Look out at the world around me. I see a long road ahead of me One that'll take so long to walk I don't know how I'll ever finish it. But let's go, one step at a time!
Rei's The World is Yours
No doubt orchestrated by Rei himself, Youtube gave me a financial scam ad on this video.
(8 seconds in) Yeah I can dig this.
(17 seconds in) What the fuck is that yelling in the BG
(26 seconds in) Oh, I like this a lot. There's an idiom in Japanese--"10 people, 10 colors"--meaning that each individual has their own unique outlook on the world. Here, Rei says "Repainting over the gray city [with] the ten people, ten colors seeping [into me]." Love seeing Rei express that other people enrich your life
(50 seconds in) He's unexpectedly honest in this song. There's a confessional or vulnerable quality to it I don't see often in Rei
(1:06) "Here and now, I'll fulfill a promise [I made] long ago and far away" Oh??
(Overall) Huh, interesting! Seems to be a "Life is what you make of it" sort of song

we watched elsbeth in such a timely manner this week! season 2 finale thoughts round up here we go (i am very sleepy so i might forget some)
elsbeth remembering everyone's names and being so like concerned awwww
no opera guy :(
i didnt expect him to be there but still
also my dad thought delia was gonna be there. like at the end of last episode. would've been interesting
guess it makes sense she'd be at a higher security facility though
that play was so comically on-the-nose and yet i fully believe they just made it like that. like before they knew elsbeth was gonna be there. maybe not the planting evidence though i don’t know
when they showed connor i was so happy. like he was literally just standing in the background while kaya and wagner talked and i was like connor!!! :)
a comforting presence in these trying times
glad elsbeth made a pompom vest. elsbeths need colorful clothing for proper enrichment something something pretend i'm awake enough to word that joke properly
when they first found the body i thought elsbeth was gonna be accused of killing him. yknow since she found the body and all
my mom pointed out warden sus way before i was sure. although i did get vibes that like it wasn't gonna be any of the prisoners
cause it wouldn't feel right for it to be specifically one of them. either a group effort or someone else entirely
oh also costume fashion guy! i wanted him to be there more. stellar example of the criminals elsbeth was just besties with and had to be like "sorry...we have to put you under arrest cause you did a murder..."
don't know if i’m getting the chronological order right cause i don't remember where exactly it cut to the b plot with wagner
but the bit with teddy was funny. he cannot escape how exactly like his mom he is
also officer chandler!!! being ride or die for elsbeth!!!!! maybe next season he and reynolds can tag team or something that'd be fun
and then they like blackmailed a judge into letting elsbeth go
i don't mind that much though cause the only reason she was there in the first place was cause some rich boy had too much influence over the cops and also because said judge had a personal grudge
fighting fire with fire yknow
oh oh and the uh. the cell block tango thing. elsbeth is the exact kind of person who would have a dream like that lol
i'd been wondering where the chef lady was. well i think i was thinking about her cause we had to pause the episode to remind each other which criminals where which. we had to google vanessa (plastic surgery lady). anyways and my dad thought one of them was chef lady but it wasn't
those two were gay as hell by the way
speaking of gay people i hate disliking kayabeth cause i feel so obnoxious. that one fucking guy being like "idk i just see steve and bucky as friends or maybe brothers" like shut up! shut UP!!!! but like i really have tried. it's like pumpkin pie i wanna like it so bad but every time i'm like oh yeah i really. don't.
sorry to any pumpkin pie fans out there btw
but like i do see what y'all mean they cannot go five seconds without being like "bestie...i love you so much...you mean the world to me..."
me with my platonic friends all the damn time but also bruh
anyways where was i
surprise elsbeth!!!
seeing all the detectives there wishing her well was so sweet y'all i love them
that said. WHY NO DONNELLY
i'm sure it was like a scheduling conflict or something but i miss her!!!!!!!!!
elsbeth calling for a speech and kaya pulling the uno reverse card was entertaining
season is over...
edit: fuck there was something i realized i forgot to comment on and now i forgot again. what was it
damn

I’m really getting outraged seeing an exhausted trope ‘Obi-Wan is a whore’. Been seeing these jokes since I entered the fandom, and –  that’s fine to joke stupidly, ok? – but sometimes it’s treated not as a joke, but as a canon fact! ‘Why do we love Obi? He’s a whore, that’s why!’. I don’t get it. Yes, Obi-Wan ‘flirts’ (aka infuriates his opponents so they lose focus and make it easier for him to defeat them), but it doesn’t make him ‘a canonical whore’. Canonically, he has only one love interest – Satine Kryze (two, if we count Siri Tachi from the Legends). And he has been proven to be ace, anyway.
I know it takes its roots from Ewan McGregor’s notorious choice of projects – naked, gay, you name it. But he and Obi-Wan are two completely different personalities! Yes, it’s fun to take some of the actor’s features to enrich the character – but seriously, in Obi-Wan’s case it just too… much, I’d say. As it’s not supported by anything in movies\series\books and outright contradicts canon (ace, remember?).
And one more thing why I feel repulsed when seeing these stupid overused takes about his ‘promiscuous’ ways. Were he a woman, would the same people call her ‘slut’ (even lovingly)? No, it would be misogyny.

Day 357: Blown By This Handsome Sentient Bubblegum Who Is Also A Successful Landscape Architect
I won't neglect the tingleverse connection this time- the gay t-rex law firm makes an important appearance in this one! Nice to still see them appearing in the tingleverse after the re-write of their story.
The plot here is not too different from what I read yesterday, a romantic story of two individuals finding their lives enriched for meeting each other. That's not what really got my attention in this one. No, the sex is what got my attention. I say pretty often that the sex in tinglers is generally pretty vanilla. More vanilla than you might expect for all these stories that center on sentient non-humans. THIS TINGLER, THOUGH. I CHEERED. This one really utilizes the kinky potential of sentient bubblegum! HELL YES. I don't have anything interesting to add personally, just... I loved it. I had a lot of fun reading the climactic scene of this story. Thank you, Dr. Tingle!!!

hiii bones i desperately need to know more about the time seb and cassidy got chased by the NCPD and then hit by a car in front of the hospital i'm sorry i ended up getting obsessed with a small detail
HIII RENA THANK YOU SO MUCH it's honestly one of my favorite encounters of them all 😭 for context, there's a total of 28 encounters between january 2077 and december 2077; this encounter is the 13th encounter and it happens in the end of june 2077 (which, if you're interested, lines up with the in-game events in my canon with vincent and would happen around the same time of the parade; so while all of that serious business is going on you got these two clowns getting hit by a car SBHGFDJGDFJGD)
basically what happens is that for once, cassidy is not out to kill seb; he's having a moment in a bar and seb happens to show up at the exact same place, then believes that cassidy did in fact show up there to kill him (which usually is indeed the case) and this prompts a fight between the two which ends up escalating rather quickly into a full-blown bar fight. fun!
that is until the ncpd shows up and starts to arrest people left and right but naturally so, since this is night city, the cops end up getting dragged into the bar fight as well. at some point seb and cassidy manage to stumble out of the bar (well. one of them gets flung through the window and the other stumbles out of the bar) and one of the few still standing cops in the midst of the chaos and panic ends up arresting them?? sort of??? but also needs to call for reinforcements and he ends up just. handcuffing them together. oops
and then they need to run the fuck away from the cops because cassidy is wanted dead or alive by maxtac and kang tao and lowkey militech as well and seb is wanted very much dead by arasaka so if either of them were to get captured by the ncpd they'd be in a bit of a pickle. a big one
so! cue to a chase scene through night city (i feel like it's important to mention once more that seb is 1.99m tall with silvery gray hair that stands out in a crowd and cassidy is 2.01m tall with peach pink hair that. you guessed it. stands out in a crowd) in which they're mostly trying to outrun several ncpd vehicles but also around every corner they try to kill each other. while still being handcuffed together. on more than one occasion they would also end up falling into each other's arms and touching hands and all the other gay shit you'd expect from me and andy in our writing but that's not important right now
the chase ends pretty abruptly when they've managed to outrun the ncpd but they're still trying to fuck each other up which results in them running into traffic and then getting hit by a fucking car right at the entrance of the hospital =D obviously the driver is very worried and checks them in at the hospital so they can get looked at. they're still handcuffed together. no one questions it it's night city. they're now stuck in a waiting room for about 45 minutes with crying children, arguing couples, staring elderly people, etc etc, WHILE handcuffed to their arch nemesis. and they can't even kill each other about it
as funny as this whole idea is, the scene ends with them outside the hospital and amanda (seb's best friend and another member of the cobras, his gang) unlocks the handcuffs for them. and cassidy makes eye contact with seb very briefly. and then starts walking backwards and quickly turns around and leaves. and that's where it ends
because despite the fact that yes he does really need to kill this man, at that point it's become much more than just that contract that he signed with his mysterious client. with both seb and cassidy the other is fascinating to them and it's kind of become a game; they're each other's equal in combat which has RARELY happened before, it's kind of like enrichment?? obviously it's also infuriating and they're both going insane but at the same time it would by then have become something that they both rely on. creating intricate rituals to be close to another man etc etc
it's kind of like. violence as a love language honestly. like knowing what the future holds for them and all this is just. slowly but surely transforming into something entirely else than just two guys trying to kill each other because they both know that it's never gonna happen. they know the other isn't gonna kill them and they know they'll never be able to kill the other so really what does that all mean then? what's left? they could easily stop but that would mean they won't ever see each other again because well they're enemies. they can't suddenly become friends. they're both just kind of. waiting i guess?? to see where it goes. because maybe one day things will be different... not that they would ever admit to anyone let alone themselves that they would like for things to be different but like. it's about the subconscious yearning of it all. do you see the vision
anyway this got very long but i could've gone on for longer because. as you could probably guess. andy and i wrote out shit like this for every single encounter SBHGJMKFDGBFDJGKDF and then!!!! we have entire LISTS of jobs and targets for the later eras (this here is what we call killing era on account of the. well. there's a significant lack of killing but it's about the attempts i guess) with again. so much detail. THERE'S JUST SO MUCH WE HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY

Episode 2.4: Bullet points
Hello! This is about up to Episode 4 of season 2 of Yellowjackets, and ONLY episode 4 of season 2 of Yellowjackets. I have not seen beyond the ninth episode, at all, and know NOTHING about this show. Please do not spoil it for me.  Things that are spoilery in nature, for me, include: saying things like  “Just wait!!” confirming or denying anything I put forward, outside information about the cast interviews or creator statements, leading questions like “Do you think “blank moment” means anything?” etc. Remember  that Y’ALL HAVE SEEN THE SHOW AND I HAVE NOT. This informs the way you  talk about things relating to the show. Just be really careful is all  I’m asking. Also: If there is LITERALLY any stance I  could take on this show or character that would make you upset, please  just fucking block the tag
Is it just me, or is the theme song opener getting more distorted? I like the idea of this, I like the notion that as we follow these girls down, even human speech becomes more and more garbled to us, all of this makes less and less sense. They are further and further from being a person, even.
Watching Jeff is so interesting for me, because on the one hand, I think there’s a part of him that knows that Shauna got back their van in an absolutely insane way, and I think he even likes it, but on the other, that same broken pressure cooker is the reason she had an affair with Adam. And he seems genuinely hurt by the fact that other people know about her and Adam, even outside of “They very much suspect you killed him”
What do I think about Walter and Misty? I mean, I am having fun, but what do I think is Walter’s angle? I assuredly do not think he is innocent in any of this, and don’t feel confident that he isn’t planning anything or involved in anything, as much as I would love it to be true that they are just a match made in heaven and they can run off together to be the most insanely bizarre couple the world has ever seen. I want that, but I don’t think I actually think that. I loved the whole B&B thing.
Speaking of, kind of, I fucking love Evita. Hamilton wishes it could offer such an ultimately complicated look at a historical figure. But so much of Evita, too, is about becoming and intention. And how intentions, to a certain point, get lost or dont’ even matter, when it comes down to it. I am choosing to believe this is a very thoughtful choice from someone who has a knowledge of both bombastic musicals and good writing sense.
So we think Coach Ben stole the meat, right? I don’t know who else would given that he is the one not eating people, though I confess he’s right about not being nimble in the snow. Speaking of BEN! I am in love with that flashback with him and Paul, because it brought me to something that I hadn’t yet realized: Ben is, just like the girls, someone who is going to be stuck before he ever got to have a life. I should have realized this, he’s a gay man in the 90s, he did not get to have history and memories and all of those things because he was so busy being miserably closeted. He was, like the girls, like Travis, only just beginning to have a life that he could call his own, and it was also stolen from him, and he TOO, has an immense amount of tragedy to cope with in that. That’s why the main coacjh had to die in the crash but Ben had to live--the head coach had a life, but Ben is just the same as the girls.
Can’t wait to figure out what the whole story with the dripping sound is. A thaw? Like a metaphorical thaw? We hear it when Taissa is walking along the road looking for Van, who, as I said, is tied in to Tai’s downfall and the Shadow!Tai’s control. Can’t wait to see how Mari is involved (Is this Mari quite literally haunting the narrative?)
Akilah is dead, right? Actually on that note, Akilah and Mari both better be dead. I really like Akilah, but she is the kind of character we are supposed to like. They are enriching her and making her loveable because she is the puppy they intend to kill. She’s studying for the SAT, she’s adopting mice, she’s talking about how badly she wants to see her nephew again, and, sorry Akilah. But! I mean, at this point we have so many survivors that we are running out of characters we have any investment with to kill. We need deaths that matter. I am, admittedly, very disappointed by Van’s survival. We know nat lives, Lottie, Shauna, Misty, Travis, Van I mean come on. We need Mari and Akilah, as the only characters with development left, to both die. Coach Ben too, though I admit on a personal level that I perversely hope he survived and sent the postcards and is hunting them or some shit.
So speaking of, Javi’s alive, huh? Boo and also hiss.

9, 10, 30, 34 for the pride asks?
hellooooo I'm honestly shocked that people have questions for me <3
9) When did you realize you weren't cishet?
Shipping helped me come out as bi lmaoooooo I am autistic. In sixth grade I was drawing me and my friend and I thought "If we were in an anime, people would ship us -> wait I ship us" so anime made me gay I guess
Gender diversity had definitely interested me but at 14 I saw a picture of phalloplasty for the first time and I was HOOKED. I didn't know trans men existed. This led to me typing "ftm" into youtube (love when you just type a vague ass term and hope the internet brings you what you need. I'm so bella googling "vampires") and I saw a 20 minute video (still up, I think!) of someones transition on T. I cried NONSTOP and was like okay lightbulb I want that soooooo so so bad.
10) Something that gives you gender euphoria:
This would be a fun list! But here's an answer you might like. I have a plain tight black T-shirt and when I wear it I feel like Patrick and that gives me SO much gender euphoria.
30) Are you monogamous or polyamorous?
lets fall in love and find out (I answered this on the previous post <3 )
34) What are you needing most right now (what would make your life easier or more fulfilling in regards to existing as queer)?
I answered this in another one but the sillier and more immediate answer is gay sex. I need to be kissing boys. I need to be pegging girls. I need to be providing the trans community with orgasms to destress them and help them start the revolution. Gay sex is part of my enrichment.

Okay before i can muster up the courage to look at my embarrassing concert videos (I am screaming in all of them but my vocal cords can't really yell or scream loudly so it just sounds like a half wail followed by coughs lmfao),
General ~vibes~ of the Fall Out Boy show in Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, CA
Had the best time. It was quite different from the 4 other concerts I've been to before (all kpop & all different venues) so I didn't have a frame of reference and it felt all very new.
Once through a quick bag check, security, ticket scan, shoreline amphitheater had a lot of food and merch before you get to the actual seating.
There was a lot of food options and a Lot of alcohol offers. I don't drink, and I really dislike the smell & being surrounded by alcohol/drunk people, so i put on a mask. But that's more of a me-specific thing. Everyone looked like they had a good time chilling with drinks and food.
Merch: from the area I was in, right inside the gate, there was 2 merch tables back to back, carried fob & opening acts merch. Line was about 30 minutes. The size I wanted was gone so I got the size up.
Openers: unfortunately I missed the first two openers, but managed to catch a few bmth songs. They were really good. The vibes of the crowd was different than for fob, more people were yelling & standing on the seats. idk much about bmth but they sounded good, the lead singer was charismatic, I'd be interested in checking their stuff out. (+ a couple in front of me, with the girl who didn't want stop standing on the seat when the bmth asked everyone to sit down for the last song, left like after sugar? Which was honestly great for me bc the guy was tall lol)
A lot less people were filming (compared to kpop, which makes sense) and everyone was vibing. Lots of dancing, waving arms, clapping, just having a lot of fun. (The couple next to me were making out half the time and kind of slow grinding? which was interesting shsj)
The pink seashell project! I wasn't able to find people who were handing them out, but it looked like a lot of people had them ready (even the couple on the other side of me, who were both really chill/casually bopping to fob, whipped them out for fake out). I ended up using my lightstick for the pink light, but it was amazing to see the pink lights irl. Just so so pretty.
There aren't much breaks or ments in between sections of songs. Usually pete will say a couple of lines (s/o to support act, smfs album, succession speech-interrupted by Patrick banter!-patrick saying pete just disappears again, patrick piano enrichment, 8ball ments, encore line). Everything ran smoothly in a set pace.
Pete in the Box; our venue didn't have a catwalk like bmo stadium did, but he still popped up for dance dance in the little area between the 100s and 200s! I knew it was coming but was still surprised when the spotlight beamed at pete across the venue.
A LOT OF CONFETTI FOR SATURDAY. I was in like the first 15 row and the whole lower 100s were COVERED in bnw confetti and streamers.
People watching: its the bay area, but even for that, gay people. Gay people everywhere, icluding me. (/j). Lots of people in black, celestial/star prints, mesh and fishnets, belts, and a lots of eyeliner and purple lipstick (so, a lot of hot people). but not everyone were in black/alt/emo, there was a lot of people in band tees (saw hella mega, green day, blink 182, even a corporate rainbow patd urie shirt, which hmmm.) It was really fun to people watch in lines, bc it was exactly what you'd see at a fall out boy concert in the best way.
After the show, a kind soul gave me a save rock and roll bracelet, which made the whole experience perfect.
And of course. Fall out boy put on an amazing show. The light effects, the Pyro, the plastic bubble balloons, streamers, etc were so engaging, and the performances were amazing. (Patrick, hand in marriage. Please)

The Owl House... what a great show it is.
It quickly solidified its place as my favorite show, a show I find comfort in.
I know it might sound weird but The Owl House has taught me that it's not only okay to be different but it's also something I'm allowed to embrace.
I've also experienced and still experience the sting of being called a nerd or a weirdo, being on the receiving end of jibes and teasing; simply because I'm passionate about video games, getting hyped about something others may deem as odd or because I live out my creativity by writing fanfictions, making music or compiling funny video game moments into a video edit, layered with music and sound effects. Heck, even for watching The Owl House I get made fun of because it's a cartoon and cartoons are "made for kids" and I'm an adult with a job; am I not allowed to enjoy things?
Being called a nerd/weirdo made me feel insecure about my hobbies, making them seem like something that I shouldn't even be vocal about. As a result I usually either tone down my enthusiasm or don't talk about my hobbies at all if I meet new people unless I know the other person has a similiar or the same interest; even then I'm still cautious.
When I began watching The Owl House - unfortunately way too late - I was immediately drawn in by its undeniable charm.
We have Luz, whose journey through the Boiling Isles showed me that embracing my true self is a strength, not a weakness. I can relate to her because I also am afraid to be made fun of for the the way I am, to not fit in because I like the things that I like, having to pretend to be someone I'm not.
We have Amity - as a lesbian myself, I see a reflection of my own experiences as we catch on to her crush on Luz. I've been there too.
Her fear of being rejected - yeah, I understand.
Amity blushing around her crush, doing stupid things around her - yes, can relate to that too
The way Amity talks about how things have gotten confusing since Luz came to the Boiling Isles, making her think things she's never thought before, making her feel things she never used to feel - absolutely, 100% relatable.
Also the instances of Amity gay panicking over Luz... absolutely accurate! (At least that's how I'd panick around my crush if I had one)
Even the way Luz's and Amity's blossoming feelings for each other are portrayed is so on point; it doesn't feel rushed or "just placed into the show to be inclusive" like many other TV shows these days unfortunately fall prey to and make it seem forced... or being used as a running gag in the show (which also applies to many other stereotypes); instead their relationship develops in such a natural way until we get to Knock, knock, knockin' on Hooty's door (I love that bird tube) which gives Luz and Amity the final push to ask each other out; the way this entire scene plays out... ugh, my heart.
But it's not only Luz and Amity who resonated with me; there are so many characters that just add to the show with their own backstories, personal struggles and fears... Eda, King, Raine, Willow, Gus, Hunter, Lilith, Camila... each character enriches the overall story.
The Owl House is just so good at what it does: The story-telling, having characters with unique personalities and their development throughout 3 seasons (still mad at Disney for robbing us of a full 3rd season) alongside the representation of different sexualities and identities; I also love the fact that homophobia (or any other kind of phobia) just doesn't exist on the Boiling Isles. Everything is depicted as normal (as it should be); heck even Odalia wasn't like "what? My daughter is dating a girl?! UNACCEPTABLE!" Odalia is still effed up but... you get my point.
I'd also like to add that I appreciate the way The Owl House tackles serious matters like trauma and struggling with mental health issues. These themes are never trivialized or oversimplified; instead, they are woven into the plot, into the characters' journeys in a way that feels honest and true. This thoughtful representation provides solace and validation to viewers who may be grappling with their own challenges... like myself. It's a reminder that such struggles are real and complex.
So, in conclusion... The Owl House does an amazing job making me happy and I'll definitely rewatch... multiple times.
It's a show that welcomes all forms of uniqueness with open arms, and for that, I am profoundly grateful to Dana Terrace and the entire crew. Thank you for creating a space where I, and hopefully so many others, can feel understood and seen, despite the challenges you had to face to make this show happen and play out the way you wanted it to.
"The only thing I've ever really wanted... was to be understood" Luz Noceda, S3 E2, For The Future

I don't know, I think even before I became like this and commited to being a hater for enrichment, if I really thought about it I would have always been like. Okay Wildbow is *surprisingly* good with trans people but that *surprise* carries implicit meaning that reflects back onto the characters. And surprisingly good is not Good Outright. He is surprisingly good with trans characters, compared to his (cis) gay characters. but that entire sentence then gets contained within the dna of the trans character in the text.
Thinking about Jessie having to couch her transition for Sy, for Sy's benefit -- to wield transition with no force at all, so that we can move on. Maybe it's that... And this is some pretty fucking out there wildbow psychoanalysis, even on the grouchy wildbow psychoanalysis blog. But it's like Wildbow wants to find the interesting deviancy at the heart of trans folk, the thing he can latch onto that he latches onto with his gay characters and says is just them being flaw characters like any characters, the x factor, the juice. But he just... Can't. He wants to write well and writing well means getting to the heart of the Issues with Trans People, his rep his take. but he just cant make transphobic rep interesting in that same way. So there's just all the dancing around the idpol of it all as there is with anything, all the second-hand first page of Google interviews on xyz narginalizsd experience he mines, and then... A hollow and standard misogyny. Which is still **interesting!!** engaging with sveta as obviously problematic trans rep when I was early in my transition and earlier in my wb fandom heel turn was this interesting experience, this throughline to hold onto as ward disintegrated around me. will she get to keep her hair? will wildbow end her story on a soured, dismal beat? why did she get her body from a sex trafficker? There's a real potent power held within the trans woman's body in these texts, the power to reduce the texts from "primarily interested in Flawed, Complicated Women and executing on that well" to. Generic Misogyny. Through the added mental stack of having to Do a Transgender Right, wildbow is somehow dissolved into hot just a transmisogynist, but a particularly Early YA Male Author (trans)misogynist. through the incredible power of the transmisogyny intersection, all things are possible. it's fun we're having fun

KuroEne AU: Ene gets intimate with Kuroha (Part 2)

KuroEne AU: Ene gets intimate with Kuroha (Part 1)
Not sure if links are gonna work when I'm on priv but here! You can refer back to the first post if you'd like to get the full context and read the rest.
KuroEne AU: Ene gets intimate with Kuroha (Part 2)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: Ene hate fucks Kuroha. The End.
KuroEne AU Rambles
I'm gonna preface this with my rambles first before I post my KuroEne AU dialogue scripts. At the very least I want my rambles and ship ideas to be interesting to read. Hopefully this is interesting <3
I feel like Notion changed their font omg
Also just for those who aren't familiar with my AU ideas. My depictions of my ships (including their bedroom intimacy), are ALWAYS mutually consensual. And I always make sure to make my ship depictions as healthy as possible. At least, as healthy as we can get with Kuroha/Saeru, anyways. Like we ARE dealing with a chara who's basically the equivalent of a serial killer, causing an eternal time loop tragedy by constantly killing the protag cast.
Ene hate fucks Kuroha, acting on her complicated feelings and desire for him, and Kuroha loves teasing her. In Kuroha/Saeru's words, they indulge in pleasure together.
In canon verse, their relationship is so messy and complicated and angst heavy and tinged with tragedy, and that's what makes it fun~~
Though ofc I also enjoy dealing with them in more lighthearted AUs too.
Ene tries to convince herself that she's just doing this to defeat him, but Kuroha tells her the real reason - she seeks warmth and companionship, and because of his knowledge of the previous routes (past timelines) and experiences, he knows her and her desires intimately.
It's a requirement for me for the MLW ships I'm obsessed with to have at least one meow meow mf (and if not that, a chara of a secondary trope I enjoy), to be messy and complicated and funny, and for at least one of the characters to be able to be HC'ed/interpreted as queer)
Like it's obvious that KuroEne works so well as a ship due to their unique context and dynamic (Kuroha/Saeru's character context and HaruTaka and KonoEne's existence), and KagePro's setting.
Like I would NOT be into it if it was just some generic ass Hate/Love trope MLW ship (a trope I despise most of the time unless it's good), cuz most Hate/Love MLW ships are bad and uninteresting.
Random unsorted dialogue script drafts I wrote. Gonna have to add to these sometime but for now they're unfinished. I like Kuroha teasing blushy embarrassed Ene~
Since both submissive Ene and more assertive dominant Ene appeals to my gay side teehee 🤭 I had lots of different separate scenario ideas in mind, so I tried to include the context in which I wrote these
KuroEne Rambles (Continued)
Me: Why is an AU where Ene has hate sex with Kuroha/Saeru so interesting and fun to write for
I mean, I know why. It's because Ene can actually interact with him and others (Mekakushi Dan members) physically now that she isn't just stuck in electronic devices (Shintaro's phone and computer).
I like writing a lot about their intimacy, but now that Ene can move around in the real world and so he can take her places, like to the amusement park.
Also just for those who aren't familiar with my AU ideas. My depictions of my ships (including their bedroom intimacy), are ALWAYS mutually consensual. I always make sure to make my depictions as healthy as possible. Like we're dealing with a chara who's basically the equivalent of a serial killer causing a time loop tragedy
Ene hate fucks Kuroha, acting on her messy complicated feelings (and secretly, desire) for him, and Kuroha loves teasing her. In Kuroha/Saeru's words, they indulge in pleasure together. From Kuroha's end it's not hate, but interest and curiosity.
Ene tries to convince herself that she's just doing this with him to defeat him, but Kuroha tells her the real reason - she seeks warmth and companionship, and because of his knowledge of the previous routes (past timelines) and experiences, he knows her and her desires intimately.
In canon verse, their relationship is so messy and complicated and angst heavy and tinged with tragedy, and that's what makes it fun~~
Though ofc I also enjoy dealing with them in more lighthearted AUs too. They deserve to just be cute together in fanon AUs
God, this ship is so fucking spicy. I looove how much conflict and tension they have. I'm remembering why I was so in love with them AHHH.
I think Ene's assertive, bold and brazen, cheeky, competitive personality fits so well with someone like Kuroha/Saeru. They fit sooo well together.
Cuz while she doesn't actually have the upper hand, like she only "wins" against him in their "games" cuz he lets her, she can still surprise him with how predictably unpredictable she is. And just having that little win over him is good enough for her.
Kuroha obliges and lets her top/dominate him. He is interested to see how things play out with Ene leading their intimacy, cuz he wants to see how far she'll go when she wants something (him). Like her topping just proves she WANTS to do this with him, no matter what she says (since Ene is very tsundere).
KuroEne rambles
One more thing: As I said before, Ene seems very… bottom ngl, but I wanted her to be more assertive and dominant to match someone like Kuroha/Saeru to at least balance things out more… alleviate the power imbalance slightly. Ene is very bold and brazen and confrontational. It's fun when she takes charge and takes the lead in their intimacy too! Kuroha obliges and lets her.
Also, I said this before that, in canon verse, Kuroha/Saeru inherently has a power imbalance with every character that he could be paired with due to his context (ie. power in physical strength and power over knowledge). Though, that's not inherently a bad thing.
Imo you just need to tread carefully with Kuroha's ships so that they're still portrayed with care. Like imo it can still be done. I do make sure to make the relationship and setting as healthy as possible, at least, as healthy as you can get with Kuroha/Saeru, anyways.
Cuz I needed something to balance how, in Kuroha ship AUs, Kuroha/Saeru clearly weaponizes his words and knowledge against the chara he's paired with, with how he knows about Ene's love for Haruka, her special, complicated relationship and friendship with Konoha, and her personal vulnerabilities and secrets.
And even letting her have that form of control in intimacy is still like playing a game to him. The knowledge that he could take back that control at any time, still plays up to and feeds his ego.
Cuz Kuroha would be all like, "Oh, you think you're in control here, just because I'm letting you do what you want?"
He'd be interested to see how things play out with Ene leading cuz he wants to see how far she'll go when she wants something (him).
Kuroha knows that Ene thinks that she's the one who's in charge of the situation, the one in charge of their bedroom intimacy, just because he willingly gives up control. Ene would be surprised with how… seemingly calm and compliant he is about it, and so, decides to take the lead.
But he knows who's really in charge of their intimacy. It's an ego boost for him.
Ofc I like submissive bottom Ene too cuz it fuels my gay side, but more assertive dominant Ene also drives me crazy. Love both <333
Ene: I got it!!! I'm going to use my Ultra~ Cute~ Cyber Girl~ Techniques on you and seduce you and impress you with my skills!! Just watch!!! (>:D) Kuroha: Cut it out with the jokes, will you? (^-^)
God, this ship is so fucking spicy. I looove how much conflict and tension they have. I'm remembering why I was so in love with them AHHH
I think Ene's assertive, bold and brazen, competitive personality is the perfect fit to counter someone like Kuroha/Saeru. They fit sooo well together. Out of Kuroha/Saeru's possible ships, they make SUCH a good ship.
I think that ship-wise, Ene and Shintaro work best with Kuroha/Saeru, due to the special relationship they had with Haruka, and now Konoha.
Some of my fave lines that I wrote
Kuroha tells Ene that he'll take her to the brink of "pleasure"
Kuroha: I'll let you taste the biting fangs of love, and the intoxicating poison of pleasure… Kuroha: And yet, you crave this, Ene. You knowingly drink from the fountain of poison. Kuroha: I'll take you even further… I'll push you to the brink, and let you fall with me into the abyss. Ene—
Like aghhhh these ones are so good
Some of the most banger dialogue I've ever written has been for my JuAli AU and KuroEne AU like OMGGG
Other rambles
Ene realizes that Kuroha/Saeru's retention of memories, and recounts of their intimate moments together, are WAY too "clear" and vivid and specific to make up on the spot. Like it fully explains why he knows sm about her (her past, wants, and desires, and bedroom preferences). He's not lying.
We actually don't know how clear Saeru's retention of memories of previous routes is, so in my KuroEne AU, I just assumed he remembers everything in specific detail. Like a memory bank you can draw upon.
I feel like Ene gets mad at him when Kuroha/Saeru starts flaunting his knowledge of her from previous routes, especially their moments of intimacy together, cuz to her, it makes it seem like he is not taking her seriously. But Kuroha probably tells her that he IS taking her seriously, and that he would not be here, playing the game with her, if he wasn't.
Ene: You started doing it so many times it started to become like a game to you...! Kuroha: Is that what it seems like to you, Ene? Oh, but I am taking you very seriously. Your anger, hatred, and desire… They all fuel me. Kuroha: You are mistaken about that, Ene. I wouldn't be here if I wasn't, hm? Since we are both participants in this game of ours—
Ene: Maybe because you started learning, after doing this so many times— When did you start pretending to be human? Ene: Snake of Clearing Eyes. I want to fog up your eyes……
She probably bites back to him that, him getting to know and bond with them before killing them, is honestly even more cruel than just killing them. It's like building a tower of blocks only to tear it down yourself, and his "playing around with peoples' lives" is like experimenting with taking out said blocks just to see it all come crashing down (ie. like the block game Jenga)
And Kuroha probably tells her that he will not give up his goals/plans (since he wants to live forever). Since he is someone inherently dark and selfish (unlike the rest of the KagePro cast), he will continue to go through with causing the "Tragedy" because he sees it as a way so that he can live forever, and also, a way to meet the other party again (in this case, Ene), endlessly, forever and ever. He prioritizes his own plans/motives.
He tells her that he is the observer of the world since the beginning of time, has seen its past, and while he knows how each route will end up, at the very end (the inevitable outcome), he cannot predict the future, and so, he experiments with different possibilities. He wants to see where each of those possibilities take him, this time, and the next, next, time. What fuels him is "curiosity."
He knows Ene, and wants to know more about her, to add to his knowledge, to continue to indulge in "pleasure" with her, to see what's the same and what's different from previous routes.
Ene, someone who generally avoids confronting her feelings, doesn't want to face and confront the fact that the one who knows her most intimately (in the context of a KuroEne ship AU), is her greatest enemy.

As always, you can read more about my rambles about them under the cut! I love them sm~
5/13 Rambles
At one point I was considering Ene saying "I love you Haruka" repeatedly when she fucks him (Kuroha) to try and drown out the reality of who she's actually doing this with, and Kuroha teasingly saying "Saying someone else's name during sex is such a bad habit of yours" but I thought that might be a little too cruel ADHDSJJDSJ.
I decided against it mainly cuz Ene refuses to think of Konoha as "Haruka" and calls him an impostor instead. She wouldn't see them as the same.
5/15 ~ 5/16 Rambles
Me when I realize I can just yoink the CopyBot concept for my KuroEne AU 🖤 💙
This is how we serve 🫡 LMAO
NetsuAi (Netto/Iris) my beloved 🧡 💜 🦋 The only good MLW ship in MMBN/EXE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was just thinking about this but imo having something similar to a CopyBot from BN6 (Mega Man Battle Network 6) in my KuroEne AU could actually be a solution for Ene not being able to manifest into the real world
Like, I was thinking of having something similar to a CopyBot, except it's a humanoid android/robot body with human flesh that Ene can just transfer into? And when it runs out of battery, she just goes back to the cyber world.
Similar to how Iris (MMBN/EXE) does.
Except the Copybots in BN6 don't have human flesh, they're just default base bodies that just take the appearance/form of the NetNavi (Network Navigator, peoples' digital companion AIs in MMBN/EXE) that's currently in it.
And the CopyBots have a safety lock mechanism, so they can't use Battle Chips or go rogue or anything. And the CopyBots need to be charged when they run out of battery.
The MMBN (Rockman.exe) anime has the Dimensional Areas (artificially created field in which NetNavis can materialize in the real world) too but I think having something similar to a CopyBot would be the best bet
I don't watch Sci-fi movies but I'm sure there are sci-fi movies that explore similar kinds of concepts.
Kuroha/Saeru has knowledge from everything from the start of civilization… Shintaro in the KagePro LNs compares Saeru to "a living encyclopedia with a full grasp of everything from the start of civilization up to modern science."
I can't even imagine the amount of knowledge he has in his possession. That amount of knowledge is unfathomable to me. Absolutely insane.
So that LN bit confirms that Kuroha/Saeru carries knowledge of the history of mankind and its technologies over (probably) millions or thousands of years.
Especially when Japanese scientists in 2022 figured how to develop living human-like skin on a robot that can heal when cut. So yeah I definitely think he could get it done (especially for the sake of my KuroEne AU)
KuroEne Rambles
Actually I'm gonna call KuroEne a big brain rare pair, cuz it's very sense making to me. Wouldn't be the first time I big-brained with a rare pair (ie. KuroEne (KagePro), IdaTatsu (WATGBS AU), JuAli (Magi), EdRich (ROTRK), HaoRen (SK))
When I was first returning to KagePro, I initially thought that the Kuroha = Saeru reveal made it harder to work with my ship in canon-verse, but ever since then, I've still found tons of ways to make my ship work in canon-verse AUs, and KuroEne's concept is spicy as hell imo.
KuroEne is using HaruTaka and KonoEne as a basis for the ship. It's so sexy because they have the most conflict/tension and angst of all of Takane/Ene's "Haruka lookalike" harem ships (/lh), due to Kuroha being the main antagonist, and main source of tension/conflict in KagePro's plot (as the main instigator of tragedy)
Canon-verse KuroEne is an angsty af ship, it's something intense, like something poised to strike. There's much higher stakes in it, and I love interesting conflict/tension <333
I was just thinking about this like in Manga Route 2, Saeru possesses Hibiya's body and talks about how "Despair" is the root emotion that drives human wishes (and strong desire), which is why he needs to keep the despair going.
He wants to keep driving Marry and the Mekakushi Dan's despair to force Marry to reset the timeline to continue the tragedy forever.
Despair and desperation drives desire, to him. That definitely makes sense. But I would also put in my 2 cents that "Pleasure" is what drives human desire. And excitement and fulfillment.
And with someone as ancient as him, who possesses knowledge all the way from the birth of civilization to the modern age… Saeru must understand that. Since he takes pleasure and excitement in killing the Mekakushi Dan.
His desires and motivations are dark and selfish. He prioritizes his goals and self-preservation above all else. That's what makes a character like him so fun.
Like eventually, with enough time loop resets, he's gonna get bored of JUST killing everyone. Kuroha should explore what "Pleasure" and the pursuit of pleasure really means. And sensual pleasures are apart of that.
My KuroEne AU is basing itself on this concept, that eventually, Kuroha/Saeru is gonna start experimenting and messing around and playing around with different possibilities and find new ways to entertain himself.
In my KuroEne AU, he entertains and goes along with the ideas of actually getting to know the Mekakushi Dan members before moving forward with the "Tragedy" (his plan to force Marry to reset the world). He gets to bond and spend time with them for once, and he finds that this makes things new and interesting and exciting.
So it makes sense to me that in ship AU settings, he would eventually delve in pleasure (and pleasure in all its forms), including sensual pleasures, like intimacy.
The only love that Kuroha/Saeru would possess would inevitably be very dark and selfish, because he is that way, at his core. And so, you could bring in THIS sort of element into Kuroha ship AUs (and in my case, my KuroEne AU)
"If I keep doing this (forcing the world to reset), then I'll get to meet you forever and ever, for all of eternity… Doesn't that sound wonderful?"
Kuroha/Saeru should tell Ene something like, "Sensual pleasures are the most primal and raw form of connection, after all?"
Similar to Douman and Kiara's "illness filled love - craving heart" but he lacks their softer traits. Cuz Douman and Kiara respectively ABSOLUTELY show much softer/tender sides to people they love.
It just makes sense to me that someone as ancient as Kuroha would eventually explore different pleasures and ways to amuse himself? Like I'm reminded of Idate (WATGBS AU) is ~500 years old in our WATGBS AU's lore, represents "Pleasure" and "Emptiness"
Idate is a void demon who represents emptiness and constantly indulges in his own greed and pursuit of pleasure and excitement to drown out the sorrow he feels. But he still feels "empty" inside cuz the pleasure wasn't enough. At some point, sensual pleasures, etc., didn't feel fulfilling anymore. The orca twins Idate and Takama have never known soft love, only survival and death, and so, Idate struggles with feelings of loneliness and apathy.
Why Ene would even be intimate with Kuroha in my KuroEne AU:
I'd imagine that she'd feel very conflicted about him. She hates him but also feels strangely drawn to him. And well… Ene is in a very peculiar situation to begin with, with him. She is acting on her curiosity.
Imagine the main big bad villain being a guy who is in the body and has the face and voice of the person you loved (Haruka), is in the body of the person who's your friend that you can't help but have a soft spot around (Konoha), and looks exactly just like them but with a darkened colour palette, and is the guy who's been killing you and all your friends as the main big bad, who knows all your secrets and everything about you, and your Eye Ability, and your past, etc.,
Like this situation is fucking surreal.
This then gives them a "strange" kind of connection, largely due to curiosity (that Ene can't help but have), despite hating him. She acts on her curiosity and desire and need for connection.
KuroEne AU rambles
In my KuroEne AU, Kuroha/Saeru refers to his memories of being intimate with Ene in previous routes (timelines) as "dances" because it's a deliberate reference to Ene's gamer name back when she was a human (Takane), "Lightning Dancer Ene"
So yeah it's basically him showing off his knowledge, just how much he knows.
Kuroha/Saeru ships are like the only time I have ships where one chara has THIS MUCH of an advantage or leverage over the other in the ship, in terms of knowledge and physical capabilities (and also due to Kuroha's character role and set-up of constantly killing the main cast)
At first, Ene's in utter disbelief, like WHY does this guy know SO much about her (things that only her friends from 2 years ago would know, especially Haruka), but then, when she finds out about his identity as the Snake of Clearing Eyes, and the sheer amount of knowledge in his possession due to his nature as an Eye Ability Snake, it makes more sense to her.
Also, he does it to be poetic, since he's teasing her enough. Dude is fucking ancient, he's older than human civilization itself, according to the KagePro universe and worldbuilding lore
Referring to Part 1 of my KuroEne AU rambles post:
Just a headcanon but I'd imagine the olden/archaic speech patterns to transfer over a bit… Though he probably adapts well due to his knowledge.
Takane's full online gamer name was “Dancing Flash Ene” (閃光の舞姫・エネ, Senkou no Maihime - Ene), where Maihime (舞姫) means "Dancer girl.” The name Ene comes from Enomoto Takane
KuroEne Rambles (Misc)
Saeru was created as an Eye Ability Snake in response to Azami's first, original, strongest desire - She wanted to know who she was. But Saeru watched Azami's desire change from wanting to know who she was to caring for her family, and holds a disdain for humans and the world for changing his Master's wish. The "desire" that created him in the first place, his purpose, and his existence, was eventually forgotten by her.
He was created for the purpose of fulfilling wishes. But once that purpose is fulfilled, he'll disappear. So he makes sure to never completely fulfill his host's wishes.
Also, I just realized KuroEne technically have a parallel going on. Ene has a pseudo immortal body due to Ene's Eye Ability, Opening Eyes (目が覚め, Me ga Sameru), and Kuroha/Saeru wants to preserve his own life (by forcing Marry to reset the world), and live forever through infinite loop resets, and continue living on at least until his purpose is fulfilled.

OK NOW THAT I'VE WATCHED IT IM THINKING ABOUT THIS AGAIN UNIRONICALLY.
I was really hoping that say before that last big battle we would get the characters having a nice little moment to talk about themselves and maybe bring up what their lives were like, hell maybe even how they died so they could joke a bit about their potential coming deaths. I think that that is definitely something that makes this setting so interesting that everyone has not just the over-the-top gag of what they're doing in hell but how they got here. And more importantly, some of these characters are deeply enriched by understanding what the fuck their deal was and how it informs their characters in hell.
Those characters is Angel Dust. It's just Angel Dust, he's the only one I know who has a backstory (or maybe HAD...) and it's what makes him compelling to watch and not as horrifying as he is to audiences not in the know. If you're not in the know because its not in the fucking show and Vivzie hasn't talked about this since like 2016???? The original pitch of Angel Dust is that he is this over the top flamboyant gay spider in a pinstripe suit because in life he was a mobster. He is in hell for being a mobster, not for being gay as many people were aghast to assume from the pilot and show. And they had no reason not to because IT'S NOT FUCKING IN THE SHOW.
I know that Vivzie's whole thing is that she wants to express her characters as edgy caricatures first and let their true colors unravel, so to me the hints or reveal of Angel's real pre-death life would realistically come in the form of him having outbursts of stereotypical Italian mob-brat sociopathy. It would be a fun bookend on his stupid little character giving him one other thing to concentrate on besides being a genuinely horrific gay stereotype. But just... no, besides him pulling out tommy guns when its funny there is NO HINT of this in the show. It's sad, reflects on an egregious miscalculation in concept vs execution, and worse might imply that this redeeming aspect of his character has been downplayed or removed. Without that shit I genuinely.... aaaammm not as interested in Angel Dust as I used to be and that is TRAGIC.
Angel Dust you will always be Antonio Ragno the most closeted mob goon who died and decided to become the over-the-top gay clown you were never allowed to be IRL. *I* care about you taking your death as a chance to live your silly little dreams in a fucked up way.
One of my biggest concerns about the Hotel show is that I haven't heard any mention of a scene explaining what used to be the gay spider's backstory, wherein its explained that, 'No, he is not in hell for being gay, he's in hell for being a mobster'. That was a very good out for Vivzie on the homophobia problem and also set up a really interesting character who was trying to use their damnation as a weird, toxic route to self-expression. But I've heard nothing of a moment like that, and even worse, I don't even know if he gets to speak Italian in the show!

Mini-Review: Romantic Killer
Living her best single life, romance is the last thing on Anzu’s mind — until a tiny match-making wizard suddenly turns her life into a clichéd romcom.
Came across a trailer for this and then said, "That's either going to be really good, or really bad." My companion agreed and suggested I test it out and let them know whether it was terrible or not.
Tumblr media
Anzu Hoshino is a high schooler with no interest in romance, preferring to spend her free time playing games, eating chocolate, and enjoying the presence of her beloved cat, Momohiki. Unfortunately, when she tries a new game one day, it turns out to be crap, used by a magical creature named Riri as a way to introduce Anzu's new life: due to Japan's declining birthrate, the romantically-uninterested Anzu's life is going to be like a dating sim until she falls in love with someone! And if she doesn't? Say goodbye to Momohiki forever.
Anzu's reaction is understandable.
Tumblr media
So, back to my initial hesitancy: "you have to fall in love! Heterosexual relationships are the goal" is obviously a really skeevy theme, and when you're a person who is always happy with aromantic and/or asexual representation in fiction (hi, it's me, I'm a person), it can make you leery. And Anzu can definitely be read as aro/ace, but what's interesting is that you don't have to, the setup is patently absurd and knows it's ridiculous regardless of her orientation.
Some mysterious wizard council decided that a 10th grader needed to be in a romantic relationship or risk losing things she loved. It's compulsory heterosexuality: this character could be aro, ace, aro/ace, gay, or even just a ~15-year-old straight girl who currently has no interest in dating or romance. All of those options are viable, completely normal, and drive home how fucked up the concept of "threaten a teenager so she'll eventually get pregnant" is. (To be clear, the show doesn't dwell on anything beyond "you need to be in a romantic relationship," but even there it's clear that the show recognizes this is a ridiculous proposition.)

Anzu is impossible not to like: she's a happy, healthy teen who really likes what she likes (gaming, chocolate, cats), doesn't care much about what others think but isn't a misanthrope, and her reaction to being told "treat your life like a dating sim or never see your cat again" is to swear revenge on the wizard and do everything in her power to avoid engaging with any of the concocted plots, even as they reach cheap-fiction levels of believability, much to her disgust.
Potential love interest has to move in with her because of Reasons? Time to be Unattractive!

And the thing is, because of Anzu's determination to never get anywhere close to a romantic scenario, the people she meets are able to understand she's a safe person to be around--the first guy she meets, for instance is always having girls ask him out or try to get close--and engage with her without having to worry about hidden motives.
Anzu's determination means she is committed to not putting on a facade, which lets her personality and character shine through. Add to that some Riri-concocted scenarios that force Anzu to spend time with other characters in improbable situations, and what you get is a really, really fun and often-humorous story.

The guys themselves also turn out to be good, fun characters. They get introduced to the plot as obvious love interests, but none of them were conjured out of magic and thus they all have their own reasons to continuing to be around Anzu (although the continual magic contrivances of Riri certainly help them keep their exposure up anyway).

The ironic thing is that Riri's terrible game definitely does enrich Anzu and Kazuki's (potential love interest #1) lives, without question: Anzu gains new friends she enjoys spending time with, Kazuki does too, in a way that he's not been able to enjoy with many people before. The other potential love interests' lives are similarly enriched...but it's never because of romance! Really, this show is a good look at the power of friendship and just community in general.

And while Anzu probably would've been fine if the whole thing had never happened--while she was kinda a loner after-school, there's no evidence that she was harming herself or setting up any future problems (which is, obviously, part of what makes the wizards' scenario so stupid)--Kazuki is a different matter. I don't want to say much because of spoilers, but it's clear early on that he's not just a loner because of his personality, but he's lived through some dark experiences that makes him want to stay away from any kind of relationship talk too.

It's great, and while the story wraps up nicely, I would watch so much more.
Please, I am begging the Powers That Be: give us a season 2 where Anzu and the gang go after the wizard council. Friend hijinks and cartoon violence, it's a match made in heaven. Please.

Verdict
English dub? Yes!
Visuals: Shiny and modern! Except for Riri's game, but that's intentionally bad. Anzu's many faces are very funny as well.
Worth watching? Yes. And I would watch another season, even though the story wrapped up fine. Give me more of this lovely friend group of weirdos who love each other.
Where to watch (USA, as of March 2023): Netflix (sub and dub)
