Manahel al-Otaibi is a 29-year old fitness instructor facing over a decade behind bars in Saudi Arabia. She was arrested for tweeting about women’s rights and posting photos of herself without an abaya, a traditional robe.

Her case was taken to a Saudi court notorious for unfair trials, where she was given a prison sentence for “terrorist offenses.”

TRIAL HEARING FOR IMPRISONED WOMEN’S RIGHTS ACTIVIST

A hearing for fitness influencer and women’s rights activist, Manahel al-Otaibi, is scheduled to take place before Saudi Arabia’s Specialized Criminal Court (SCC) on May 26, 2025. Manahel al-Otaibi has been imprisoned since November 16, 2022. On January 9, 2024, the SCC sentenced Manahel al-Otaibi to 11 years in prison for “terrorist offenses” in a secret trial. She was initially charged with violating the Anti-Cyber Crime Law, then faced additional charges under the counter-terror law due to her tweets in support of women’s rights as well as posting photos of herself at the mall without an abaya (a traditional loose-fitting long-sleeved robe) on Snapchat. Saudi authorities have subjected her to torture and other ill-treatment, as well as enforced disappearance.

Manahel is a 29-year-old fitness instructor and women’s rights activist living in Saudi Arabia who was sentenced to 11 years in prison for tweeting about women’s rights and her choice of clothing.

Now she’s been forcibly disappeared. Her family hasn’t heard from her since December, and Saudi authorities refuse to share her whereabouts.

We know that she had been brutally beaten and held in solitary confinement, and we’re extremely worried for her health and safety. She has multiple sclerosis, and her sister, Fawzia, says her illness has worsened.

On November 16, 2022, Saudi authorities arrested 29-year-old Manahel al-Otaibi. She has been forcibly disappeared since November 2023. She was charged with violating the AntiCyber Crime Law due to her tweets in support of women’s rights as well as posting photos of herself at the mall without an abaya (a traditional loose-fitting long-sleeved robe) on Snapchat. Her case has been referred from the Criminal Court in Riyadh to the Specialized Criminal Court (SCC), set up to try terrorism-related crimes. The SCC is notorious for carrying out grossly unfair trials and handing out harsh sentences, including the death penalty, for individuals peacefully expressing themselves online. Saudi authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Manahel al-Otaibi and drop the charges against her.
