World Schizophrenia Day Observed at Tirunelveli Medical College

World Schizophrenia Day, observed annually on May 24th, aims to raise global awareness about schizophrenia—a major psychiatric disorder that significantly impacts mental health. In commemoration of this day, the Department of Psychiatry at Tirunelveli Medical College organized a series of impactful events to educate and engage the campus community.

The observance commenced with a poster competition for nursing students, centered on creating awareness about schizophrenia. The students showcased great enthusiasm and creativity, producing informative and visually engaging posters designed to spread knowledge and dispel stigma surrounding the condition.

The posters were evaluated by a distinguished panel comprising Dr. Ramesh Boopathy, MD, Head of the Psychiatry Department; Prof. Dr. Ramanujam; Dr. Kandhasamy, Consultant Psychiatrist; and Rtn. Mr. R. Parthipan, Principal of the School of Nursing.

The event drew the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Dr. Suresh Durai, Vice Principal; Dr. Kantasamy@Kumar, Head of the MGE Department; Dr. Arumugam, Deputy Superintendent; Dr. Saravanan, Head of the Neuro Medicine Department; Mr. Balu, Nursing Superintendent; and nursing tutors Mr. Sattanathan, Mr. Manikandan, and Ms. Iyyammal. Also in attendance was Mr. V. Selvan, National UN Volunteer and Nursing Faculty.

Following the poster competition, a seminar was conducted where senior psychiatrists delivered insightful lectures on schizophrenia, offering students a deeper understanding of the illness, its symptoms, treatment, and societal implications.

The event reached its highlight when Dr. Revathy Balan, Dean of Tirunelveli Medical College, honored the winners of the poster competition by presenting them with certificates and trophies, recognizing their effort and creativity.

Adding to the awareness drive, nursing trainees performed a compelling short play that depicted real-life challenges faced by individuals with schizophrenia, effectively conveying the importance of compassion and mental health literacy.

Dr. Nirmala Devi, MD, Head of the Dermatology Department, also lent her presence and support to the occasion.
