Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review
✩☁️💜Review:
Henry Turner and Halle Jacobs are my everything!
“Daydream” follows Henry Turner, the captain of the hockey team, and Halle Jacobs, and aspiring author, as they strike a deal amongst themselves to overcome their respective challenges in a difficult year. In exchange for being Henry’s private tutor to help him maintain his good academic standing, he will give Halle new experiences to beat her writer’s block. They just need to stick to their rule book. Simple enough…right?
First and foremost — Hannah Grace, just in case anyone hasn’t told you this yet, “Daydream” WAS worth waiting for! It is beautifully written and will be held close to my heart from this point forward.
As an eldest daughter, I heavily related to Halle and her people-pleasing tendencies. The loneliness that stemmed from taking on so much and putting everyone else first truly made my heart ache.
Henry faces many obstacles of his own, like the pressure he puts on himself to be a good team captain. I appreciate the way Grace portrays his neurodivergence. It felt realistic and she handles it with care, which is so important in terms of representation. I enjoyed reading from his perspective and learned a lot from how he views the world and processes conflict.
I adore Henry and Halle’s dynamic. Henry puts Halle first and Halle, having a sister with an ADHD diagnosis, makes every effort to understand Henry and his needs. She is very observant of his body language and gives him space when he needs to sort through his feelings. I especially love the pacing of this book surrounding Henry and Halle’s physical intimacy. Halle had a lot of anxiety surrounding it due to her previous relationship and Henry was so patient with her. He made sure to be respectful of her timeline, ask for consent, and check in with her. Throughout the book they maintain a healthy relationship by being open and honest with each other. Not only is it heartwarming, but it contributes to their insane chemistry!

i think ppl who say that mapleshade is an unreliable narrator should go read yellowface by r. f. kuang. not to #school them or anything but because it’s a far more interesting read than anything you can get from mapleshade’s canon book at least

I want chef Schlatt so bad
“𝟖𝟔 𝐌𝐚𝐡𝐢 𝐌𝐚𝐡𝐢”: 𝟖𝟔 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐬!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲: You and Schlatt cannot stop flirting with eachother, but will it go anywhere?
𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: Drinkin, Cussin
𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭: 3.5k
𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐦𝐢𝐤𝐞: LORDDD chapter two is finally with us 😭🙏🏽 sorry guys I was in such a slump, please forgive me! I will not leave you guys high and dry again! Enjoy!! Love you!!
Tumblr media
Your first few weeks at Chops went as smoothly as they could. Following Schlatts advice to not let anyone walk over you definitely helped and you’ve even got yourself a couple of regulars because of it.
However, even though money is good, it doesn’t stop the lingering tension between you and him. You pray nobody can pick up on it, and luckily no one has (besides charlie), but it’s agonizing to say the least.
The small brushes against your back whenever he’d scoot past you, the sweet, “You look nice today,” he would tell you every time you came in. Don’t even START with the free food he hands out.
Somehow he always has an excuse. “They fucked this one up, take it.” or “Come try this, it’s going on our seasonal menu next month.” Who were you to deny him?
It didn’t stop at work either. Charlie, the little shit he is, pesters you outside of work about him constantly.
The two of you decided to go out to eat after work one night, catching up on each other's lives as if you don’t see each other daily. He wasted no time bringing up Schlatt.
“Oh he definitely likes you,” He starts, his words muffled due to the handful of fries he has stuffed in his mouth. His lips formed a small pout, “He doesn’t give me free food.”
You laugh to yourself, waving your hand to dismiss him. “I don’t mind a free meal or two…or seven. But that doesn’t necessarily mean he likes me— I mean, aren’t you guys close?” Your voice lowers, taking sudden interest in stirring your drink around to avoid eye contact, “Does he like…talk about me to you or anything”
Charlie smiles, shaking his head at your bashfulness. “Not explicitly no, but whenever I see him making food with no tickets in the window, I try to steal some right? And then BAM! HE hits me! Literally hits me!”
A scowl paints his face as his voice deepens mockingly, “ ‘It’s not for you, don’t touch my shit’ like okay ASSHOLE! And then I see him offer it to you, so obviously there’s some connection there!”
You laugh loudly and roll your eyes at his Schlatt impression, stealing a fry from his plate. “Well he’s definitely helped me save on groceries, I haven’t paid for a meal in a month” you joke.
Your knee bounces nervously as you think of all the times Schlatt has spoiled you with meals and sweet words. But your mind can’t help and only comes up with the worst possible scenarios.
Say you actually do get together, what happens if you get into a fight and have to go to work together? Would he fuck up your food? Fire you? Oh god, would he fire you? Is that even allowed? What if-
“You’re thinking too hard about this.” Charlie interrupts, snapping you back to reality. Your eyes dart back up to meet him as he looks at you with gentle eyes. “No! No, I’m fine. I’m chill..” you mumble, but you aren’t fooling anyone, not even yourself. “I just wanna be sure I know what I’m getting into..”
Charlie smiled kindly, reaching across the table to put a hand on your shoulder. “Look Y/N, I’m coming to you as friends of you both and telling you that you have a chance. Don’t get in your own head. Nothing bad will happen to you, even if things do go south. But I know they won’t so that’s out of the question! Trust me, okay?”
You give him a thankful smile and nod, “Thanks Charlie…I’ll let you have half of whatever he makes me next time if you’re right”
“YIPPIE!!”
🫐🫐🫐
The next night at work was peaceful. The restaurant was pretty dead towards closing, only a few people sitting at the bar and maybe one or two tables of two in your coworkers sections. Rosie sat in the office doing paperwork, all the other servers chilling at the bar area talking amongst themselves as they had been cut for the night.
You were adjusting your tips into the system, too in your own head to hear the side door open. A pair of hands wrapped around your waist, shaking you from your trance. Looking down frantically, you recognize them almost immediately, “Oh- hi Schlatt. Didn’t know you were coming in today.” you breathe, placing a hand on your heart to try and ease your heart .
Your voice is low, giving him a gentle squeeze on his hands as you look up at him with a sincere smile. He stares down at you, a tired gruff expression painting his face, he seems exhausted. He hums, leaning down grazing your ear with his lips, a small gasp escaping you as his breath tickles it.
“Wanna go make out in the back?” He whispers, his voice low. His thumb strokes your stomach, eyes trailing your face awaiting your answer. You’ve never turned your head so fast. “Wait- huh?” You question, wondering if you heard him correctly.
“Do you. Want to. Makeout. In the back.”
He articulates every word, expression serious. You’re blown away at his bluntness, mouth floundering as you try to form a coherent response. But he looks so cute, cheeks red and eyes tired, meeting your crazed stare.
You wanted him terribly.
But you can also smell the whiskey on his breath, he’s been drinking.
“Maybe when you’re more sober.” you tease, patting him on the arm, pulling yourself together with a teasing smile.
He pouts, making your heart melt. “I’m 250 pounds, it takes a lot more to get me drunk.” He argues, making you roll your eyes. You turn to face him fully, arms crossing over your chest as your nerves ease just a little when you see him slightly rock on his feet.
He’s just as nervous as you are. Or drunk, maybe both.
“I’ll tell you what, ask me again tomorrow and maybe I’ll follow you up on that offer.” You suggest, holding onto one of his hands.
A loud groan escapes him as he begins to lean against you, his head resting on top of yours as he pulls you into a hug. “But I wanna kiss you now…” he complains, making you scoff. Your hand rubs his back, “How did you even get here if you’ve been drinking?” you ask, trying to dodge his statement.
He pulls back, turning and gesturing to nothing, “Charlie. We went for drinks at a friend's bar down the road and wanted something free to eat so we came here. Waitin on our ride now, his girlfriend I think I dunno.” He grumbles.
‘Charlie’ You think to yourself, you’re gonna beat his ass when you see him. Which might be soon since you hear your coworkers and him laughing at the bar.
Schlatt looks down, head tilting to the side while he brings his hand to your cheek to pinch, “And I wanted to sneak a look at you.”
You huff and shove him away playfully. “Oh shut up!” you grumble, forcing your attention back on the screen so he can’t see your smiling face.
He chuckles, hands back around your waist while his chin rests atop your head. You can’t help but melt into him, bodies swaying a bit as he tries to stand still.
“I mean it,” he starts, staring at the screen with you while you finish adjusting tips. “I’ll remember in the morning and ask you again. Will you say yes then?”
If your pupils could form hearts they would have.
“I will.” you whisper, looking up at him, almost deciding to throw out all your morals and makeout with him right there. A wicked smile paints his lips, “Heard.” He mutters, giving your waist a small squeeze before stepping back.
You almost whine at the loss of his warmth, watching him gather his things before leaving. He waves a bye to you on the way out, a giggling Charlie following behind him with big thumbs up causing you to scowl playfully.
You fiddle with the strings on your apron, an excited squeal leaving your lips as you smile goofily to yourself.
Rosie steps out of the office to look for the commotion, peeping her head around the corner and seeing you giggling to yourself.
“You’re still here? Hurry up and go, our labor is high as shit!”
“Sorry! Sorry! I’m gone!!”
🫐🫐🫐
“BROOKE!! BROOKE WAKE UP I NEED TO GET TO WORK PLEAAASEE!!”
You hear a mix of voices and a crashing noise before her door swings open. A dazed Charlie in a crop top and his boxers greets you while your face grimaces. “You are not Brooke.” You joke, face still disgusted. He scoffs, leaning on the doorway, “She’s in the bathroom, said she’ll be out soon. Whatcha need to go in so early for, you’re good for another hour. I know, I made the schedule.” He smirks, arms crossed. You cross yours back, “I open actually smart ass, what are you doing here anyway? Weren’t you with Schlatt last night?”
He laughs, flipping his hair, “My girlfriend— who loves me very much— picked us up last night. Thank you. Oh but you wouldn’t know anything about being in a relationship would you?” He taunts making you scoff.
“Bitch-“
“Okay I’m ready, let's go! Bye baby, see you in a bit” Brooke interrupts, kissing Charlie on the cheek and taking your hand while a cheesing Charlie tauntingly waves bye to you while you glare at him.
🫐🫐🫐
“AND THEN, HE WAS LIKE ‘OH LET'S GO MAKE OUT IN THE BACK’ LIKE WHAT DO YOU MEAAAAN.” You gripe, flailing about in the passenger seat with your head shoved in your hands. The car is silent for a bit, making you peek at her through your fingers where you’re met with a blank stare, “It most likely means he wants to make out with you.”
“NOOOOOO!”
You bitch and moan the entire car ride, Brooke's grip on the steering wheel getting tighter and tighter as you repeatedly ignore the obvious attraction from the man.
She pulls into the Chops parking lot, parking at the very back while you continue to rant about how nervous you were. Her eyes look ahead, squinting as she sees Schlatt standing by the to-go door holding a cigarette while you slumped against the passenger window, head in your hands completely oblivious to the man. The two make eye contact, acknowledging each other with a nod of the head.
And a lightbulb goes off in Brooke’s head, hand quickly signaling and mouthing for him to come closer to the car. He stares back confused, slowly walking over as she directs him to the passenger side.
“I’m just so scared, I don’t know what to do.” You pout, looking at Brooke still oblivious to Schlatt.
“Well he’s coming over right now so you better figure out something quick.” Brooke points, making you turn to face the front but not seeing anyone there.
“Wha-“
There’s a tap on the window, making you turn to face him.
And you scream. Loud. Cowering back with your hands back over your face.
He flinches, muttering a ‘What the fuck’ and cackling while signaling to Brooke to roll down the window, which she does. He reaches a hand through to poke at your arm, slowly uncovering your face while you stare back with a nervous smile. “Hi..” you mumble, making him chuckle. “How you doin?” He teases with a sly smile.
He opens the car door, “C'mon I’ll walk you in.” He insists, grabbing your bag from the floor board. You turn to Brooke and all she offers is two thumbs up making you whine. You step out, slamming the door and rushing to walk next to Schlatt.
“Have a good shift you two~” Brooke teases as she drives past, making you flip her off while Schlatt shakes his head. He opens the door for you, dropping your bag off in its designated spot as you start your opening duties.
“So how you doin?” He asks again, making you turn your head. You laugh, “You already asked me that.”
“Well you never answered..” he jokes, crossing his arms with a sly smile. You shake your head, “I’m fine, how are you? Your head okay?”
He shrugs, “M’fine, Charlie was worse.” You roll your eyes, “Yeah he was at my apartment this morning, answered Brooke’s door with a crop top on, don’t even know where he got that!”
Yall laugh, the banter continuing as you finish all the opening duties before the others show up. He leans against the expo line, gazing at your figure from the back.
“So…you still thinking about that offer?” He asks lowly, he watches your arms tense, your voice lowering with a teasing tone, “It’s only 10am..” you joke, looking at him over your shoulder. He chuckles, crossing his arms, “Yeah, and?”
You smile, turning to face him, mimicking his body language. “Maybe, you gonna get drunk again before I give you an answer?”
He scoffs and turns his head, making you giggle. He pushes off the counter, heading to the kitchen as your coworkers start making their way in. “Have a good shift.” he mutters, “You too!”
🫐🫐🫐
Apparently the day wanted you to go to hell. The hosts triple sat you, people called out left and right meaning your break was cut short as nobody could handle the amount of people coming in today, everything sucked. Not to mention the Sunday crowd was stingy with their tips as always, if they even tipped at all. Why the fuck do old people even still come out to eat?
Now you’re trapped with a 20 top, who need accommodations for every fucking thing but decided to come in 30 minutes before close. Just your fucking luck.
Not gonna lie you were handling it well, to your table at least. In the back you were irritated, constantly refilling drinks and beefing with the ice as it gets lower and with Cooper when he pushes out another dessert for you to run.
You felt terrible for the cooks who have to stay longer due to your table's terrible time management, making a mental note to buy them a drink next shift.
Schlatt especially, but in all honesty you really couldn’t tell what he was feeling right now. His face seemed focused but irritated, you couldn’t see what he was doing, but he seemed really into it.
Your table was finally content, laughing with no cares in the world as if it’s not 30 minutes past closing and they were still inside, so you took the opportunity to put the rest of your tips in.
“5…3…5…6…wow lucky 10..” you mumble to yourself looking at the receipts until—
BANG
You flinch at the harsh noise, looking down to see what caused the commotion. It was a plate with a brownie sundae on it, and you looked up to see who left it there and it was no other than Schlatt, avoiding eye contact with you.
“Wh-“
“I have a dessert for you.”
“But-“
“I’m going out back, find me if they need something else”
He walks off quickly, another commotion following, the sounds of pots hitting the ground.
“WHO FUCKING LEFT THIS HERE? FUCK!” He shouts, making you laugh quietly to yourself as a clearly stoned Cooper comes from the kitchen coughing and walking up to the fountain for a cup of water.
“I don’t know why he gave me this, you already gave me all my desserts?” You question, pointing at the sundae while looking at Cooper. He laughs, shaking his head, “I think it’s for you man.”
Your nose scrunches, “But why-“ “I dunno, I’m gonna go smoke again though.”
Annnnd he’s gone. You shrug, pulling the dessert over to you and looking down.
You gasp, realization washing over you as you finally take in the dish. In chocolate syrup, written around the edges of the plate were:
“Wanna Go On A Date?”
The words were shoved awfully close as the plate was not fit to hold a dessert and a declaration of affection, but you understood nonetheless. You smile to yourself, giddily eating the dessert (after taking a picture of course).
Once you finish, you come up with your own plan of getting back at him. You see him turning the corner while he comes back in from smoking, “Schlatt!” You call, making him stop, turning to walk towards you.
“What is it?” he asks, nervously picking at his hand with his fingers. But you smile nonetheless, handing the plate back to him. “Can you take this to the dish pit for me? I think that table is finally ready to check out.”
You try to ignore his face drooping slightly before he grunts out a ‘yeah’ and takes the dish from your hand and turns on his heel to head back. You shake your head, printing out your table's receipt and walking over to check them out, beaming.
Schlatt however was not happy, his brain was doing loops trying to see if the signals you were sending meant nothing the whole time. He drops the plate in the dish pit with a huff, eyes squinting as he sees the mess on the plate he gave you.
There written in the leftover sauce was a “Yes”.
Now it’s his turn to start beaming, eyes lighting up while his heart starts to race. He laughs to himself, shaking his head as he turns the corner just to be halted by a mass bumping into him, you.
You step back, about to apologize until you realize it’s him, “Oh! Hey..” you smile, waving the merchant copy of your receipt, “$60 tip!”
He whistles, taking it from you, “Very nice, it’s the least they could do after keeping us all here an hour later.”
You nod, taking it back and putting it in your book, “Should’ve been more, honestly..” you mumble, making him bark out a laugh. He follows you over to the POS system, leaning next to you as you finish closing out tabs and adjusting totals. He watches as you pout, hand rubbing over your stomach as it growls, “Hungry?” He questions, laughing at you while you hush your stomach.
“A little, haven’t really found time to eat today..” you sulk, printing the checkout and stapling your receipts together. He takes them, watching you put your tote bag over your shoulder, “Woah woah- slow down, let me make you something before you go!”
You frown, adjusting the tote bag, “The kitchen is beyond closed, I can just hit up the gas station or something-“
He pulls you in by the waist, big hands tightly holding your hips against his as he speaks.
“Let me tell you somethin.” he starts, pulling you closer making you giggle. “Tell me somethin.” you mock, mimicking his accent, “Yeah let me tell you somethin.” he repeats, getting closer to your face.
“Who owns the restaurant?”
“You do-“ “I do, that’s right, see you’re keeping up!” He interrupts. You roll your eyes, about to argue but he cuts you off again. “Let me worry about the numbers, and the inventory, and the time. That's my job. Your job right now—“ he points to your stomach, “—Is telling me what the fuck you want to eat. So tell me, what. do. you. want. me. to. make.”
Your body tilts back as you let out a dramatic sigh , causing him to laugh and catch you with his free hand.
“I want a filet.”
“What size.”
“8 ounces. Medium well.”
“No, you always get medium well, do medium.”
“Fine! Medium.”
“What sides.”
“I want a baked potato. Loaded.”
“And?”
“…Applesauce”
“You’re fucking with me”
You roll your eyes, annoyed. “What’s wrong with applesauce? This is MY meal”
“You’re getting broccoli.”
Your face changes from annoyance to disgust. “I don’t fuckin want that!” “Oh no!” he mocks, holding you tighter in his grip, “Don’t care! I’ll grill it, it’ll taste better.”
You huff, “Fine!”
He laughs at your pouting face, cooing as he leans down to press a swift kiss on your cheek. “Aww, i’m just messin’ baby, you can have some fucking applesauce.I don’t give a shit.”
A shy smile forms on your lips as he kisses your chest,, his thumb rubbing your hip while you look away bashfully.
“But I'm still gonna give you some broccoli, if you don’t eat it you're paying for everything.”
“WHAT THE FUCKKKKKK!”
🫐🫐🫐
You wait patiently in the dining room, bouncing your knee and scrolling through your phone to distract yourself. Your hand ghosts your cheek, thumb tickling the spot he kissed, having to hold back your giggle as you replayed it in your head. It felt nice to finally admit you both had the hots for each other, the last month of sly touches and casual flirting finally feeling like it was worth it.
A text pops up on the top of your screen, it was Brooke asking if she needed to come pick you up. As your fingers hovered over the keys, Schlatt turned the corner, setting down a to go box on the table.
You offer a sweet smile, muttering a thank you before typing out a quick, “No I’m okay, I have a plan.”

Book rec time! 💜
Bookish girl meets introverted hockey captain in this heartwarming story. Two people-pleasers find their peace together. That’s the plot. And it’s incredible.
Tumblr media
Now I know Icebreaker has a very love-hate fanbase, but believe me when I tell you this book is so much more. Icebreaker was Hannah Grace’s debut. This book, the conclusion to this series, really just shows how much she has grown as an author.
Please give this book a shot if you disliked Icebreaker. You will not be disappointed!
First of all. This book had amazing neurodivergent representation. I have never felt more seen before. The characters are so real. I never once felt like I was reading about the same cookie cutter FMC and MMC. They felt real and genuine and unique. Their personalities jumped through the pages.
It’s rare that I read a romance novel and like both MCs equally. But this book… god this book. I was so invested in their story, together and as individual characters. They are so well fleshed out that their struggles felt like my own.
And the romance? The romance was so believable! There was no third act breakup because of miscommunication. No overused jealousy trope. The MMC is so soft spoken and uses clear communication, even when he doesn’t know how he feels. The FMC is so understanding. She’s not shallow, or lowkey kinda dumb like some other FMCs I’ve read about. She doesn’t jump to conclusions. She’s not hot-headed. She’s not so overly girlbossy that she disregards the help her man willingly and lovingly offers. She gave him earplugs when he was getting overstimulated at a party. She’s his safe space. She understands what he needs without having to speak. She gives him space because he asks. And he does! He is so honest with her 100% of the time. There’s no denial of feelings because they let themselves feel.
And it was perfectly paced. Perfectly spicy at just the right times. There was no awkwardness. They’re not having sex every other day. They spend their time getting to know one another on a deeply intimate level. Some authors need to write in too many overly spicy scenes to convince us that they love each other. And it was so refreshing. It truly felt like 20 year olds falling in love. Honest and real.
They love each other because they know each other. They are their own people. They are so well fleshed out that they can fully support their own story without each other, but they fit so well together because they are made for each other.
Without a doubt, this was 5⭐️! One of my top ten books for sure.

Warm sunlight streams through the gap in the curtains, birds sing their songs in the trees outside, Schlatt’s arms are wrapped around you, and everything finally feels right in the world.
So why do you feel like you’re forgetting something the second your eyes flutter open?
It hits you as you hear someone banging on the door of your hotel room.
“(Y/N)! Are you awake?” Jasper’s voice is muffled as she calls out to you.
Your eyes go wide as you sit up, immediately checking your phone. You have several notifications from everyone in the bridal party asking where the fuck you are. When you check the time, you realize you’re already an hour late to get ready with the rest of the bridesmaids.
“Oh, fuck,” You spit out, jumping up from the bed in a flash to go answer the door.
“What the hell, (Y/N)?” Jasper scowls at you as you swing the door open, hands on her hips, “You were supposed to be in Amelia’s room an hour ago!”
“I know, I know,” You speak in a hushed tone, trying to keep from waking Schlatt, “I overslept. I’m sorry.”
Your attempt to keep from waking Schlatt proves to be futile, because he lets out a loud groan as he stretches, indicating that he has, in fact, woken up.
You watch Jasper’s expression change from annoyed to downright delighted as she pieces everything together. “Oh, I can’t wait to hear all about this later.”
“Pervert!” Schlatt calls from the bed, and Jasper pushes past you to flip Schlatt off with one hand, using her other hand to cover her eyes in case Schlatt is indecent.
“Now, get your cute ass to Amelia’s room before she has a conniption.” Jasper points a finger at you, before smiling and taking off back down the hall to Amelia’s room.
As soon as the door closes behind you, you rush around your room, grabbing everything you could possibly need for the wedding. Dress, shoes, makeup, hair products. Schlatt watches you from the bed with a small smirk on his face.
“I can’t believe I forgot to set my alarm.” You sigh, changing out of your pajamas and into the matching set Amelia got for everyone.
“Well, you were a little preoccupied,” Schlatt shrugs, the smirk on his face growing.
“Oh, I remember. Trust me.” You breathe out a laugh, double checking that you have everything you need before leaning over the bed to kiss Schlatt goodbye.
Schlatt takes your face in both of his hands as he kisses you, not letting go until he’s gotten at least four or five kisses in, despite the fact that you are definitely in a rush. You giggle against his lips before squirming out of his grip.
“See you at the wedding.” You say, giving him one more kiss for good measure, before taking off toward the door.
“Hey!” Schlatt calls out, and you turn around, your eyebrows raised.
“Yeah?”
Schlatt smiles softly. “Love you, kid.”
You beam right back at him. “Love you too.”
“Oh my God!” Amelia yelps as she opens the door to let you into her room, “I thought you were dead!”
She grabs your arm and yanks you inside, closing the door behind you.
“She was just sleeping…” Jasper explains from her spot on Amelia’s bed, and you watch her eyes twinkle mischievously as she starts to speak again, “…with Schlatt.”
The room goes silent as everyone’s heads turn in your direction.
You can’t help the smile that spreads across your face. “…Yeah, I was.”
Everyone erupts with cheers, which turns into laughter as Kass (another friend of yours currently acting as the makeup artist) says, “About fucking time!” despite having no idea what has transpired over the last week.
“I was mad about it at first but…” You smile over at Amelia, “Thank you for Parent Trap-ing us.”
“I just can’t believe it worked.” Amelia snorts, shaking her head, “I really thought y’all were gonna kill each other for a second there.”
“Remind me to thank Ted for being such a gossip, too.”
“Now we just need to find someone for Kelsey!” Jasper teases, leaning across the bed to pinch Kelsey’s cheek.
“Get offa me!” Kelsey grumbles, smacking Jasper’s hand away, “I’m doin’ just fine on my own!”
“Shame,” You click your tongue, smirking over at her, “Charlie’s going to be at the wedding… but if you’re good on your own—”
“I never said that.” Kelsey deadpans, and you dissolve into giggles.
Hours later, everyone is dressed and ready, and you all head to the venue. The bridal party, save for Amelia and James, are ushered to a room to wait for the wedding to begin while Amelia and James do their first look photoshoot before the wedding.
The groomsmen are already waiting in the room, and Schlatt lets out a low whistle as you stride into the room. He stands up from his chair, taking your hand in his and making you twirl for him.
“Goddamn,” Schlatt breathes out, shaking his head in disbelief as his arms snake around your waist, “I am so glad we made up, because seein’ you lookin’ like this would have driven me fuckin’ nuts.”
You grin up at him, feeling your skin heat up under his gaze. You reach up to straighten his tie for him, before smoothing his collar down as you speak. “I was thinking the same thing. You clean up nice, Schlatt.”
Schlatt leans down to kiss your forehead, letting go of your waist to put his arm around your shoulder, holding you close to him.
“This is so weird in, like, the best way.” Ted remarks, gesturing at you and Schlatt together.
“Guess I should thank you for not knowin’ how to keep your mouth shut, huh, buddy?” Schlatt teases, smiling over at Ted.
“Yeah, I probably never would have known if it wasn’t for you.” You tell Ted, before playfully smiling up at Schlatt.
“All in a day’s work.” Ted shrugs, but you can tell he’s glad to have confirmation that he’d made the right choice in telling you. “And I’m sorry again about — well—”
“Totally forgotten, dude,” Schlatt waves his hand, and Ted nods, smiling appreciatively.
“Hope to see some of those moves tonight, though,” Schlatt murmurs in your ear, before pressing a kiss to your temple.
“With Jean mixing drinks tonight, you can count on it.” You giggle. Jean’s always been notorious in your friend group for making their drinks incredibly strong, it’s no wonder Amelia asked them to be the bartender for the reception.
“Mike’s DJing, too,” Jasper mentions, “They’ll give us plenty of chances to shake some ass.”
“I love that Amelia and James hired all their friends for this shindig,” Maple muses.
“Wish I was getting paid.” Schlatt mumbles, and you playfully elbow him in the side.
It’s not long before word gets back to you all that James and Amelia are ready to start, and you all take your positions in the hallway outside the double doors. Bouquets are handed out to all of the bridesmaids, and you hold yours under your arm gently as you do one last look over Amelia, making sure she looks absolutely perfect.
“Last chance to book it.” Schlatt jokes beside you, and Amelia gently hits him with her bouquet.
“You look beautiful.” You tell Amelia, and she grins as the music starts inside the chapel.
The double doors swing open and Maple and Eddy start down the aisle, followed by Kelsey and Natalie, then Jasper and Ted, then, finally, you and Schlatt. Schlatt winks at you as the two of you separate at the altar.
James walks in next, and Schlatt claps him on the shoulder as he takes his place at the altar.
When Amelia walks in, all heads turn to look at her, and James immediately tears up. You find yourself doing the same, just so unbelievably happy for your friends.
“By the power vested in me by GetOrdained.org, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now—” Ethan doesn’t even get to finish his sentence before James pulls Amelia in for a kiss, and everyone cheers.
This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) by Natalie Cole starts playing from the speakers as James and Amelia make their way back down the aisle together, unable to keep from dancing, full of pure joy. Amelia hops onto James’s back, and he runs the rest of the way down the aisle with his tongue out.
When you and Schlatt reconvene in front of the altar, he twirls you around again, before offering his arm to you to take. You loop your arm through his, heading down the aisle with a skip in your step. Everyone follows the two of you out in reverse order, all dancing their way out.
After the wedding comes the photoshoot with the entire wedding party and Amelia and James’s families. Portia — another friend of yours — calls out different groups for photos, snapping candids of everyone else as they all take a moment to gather up.
Schlatt stays close to you, like he can’t bear the thought of you being too far away from him ever again. His hand rests on the small of your back, or he’s got his arm around your shoulder or your waist, or at the very least, you’re standing arm to arm.
Schlatt says something that makes you belly laugh, and you hear the tell tale sound of a camera shutter pointed in your direction. You look over and Portia is already moving to show you the photo.
Portia’s caught you mid-laugh, with Schlatt looking at you like you hung the moon. It’s a little surreal to see, to think that just a few days ago he was looking at you so differently. You can’t believe a silly misunderstanding kept you away from each other for so long, but you don’t want to dwell on that anymore. All of that is in the past, and the future looks bright.
After pictures, finally, is the reception. Silverware clinks against porcelain plates, chatter and laughter fills the air, soft music drifts from the speakers — everyone is having a wonderful time.
You sit at the table for the rest of the wedding party, just eating dinner and catching up with your friends some more, reminiscing on old times. James and Amelia have opted to share their first dinner as a married couple alone in another room, their last private moment before celebrating their marriage with all of their closest family and friends.
You look around the table, smiling softly to yourself. Maple gives Eddy a sip of their cocktail, and his lips pucker at how strong it is. Natalie and Ted speak with hushed voices, heads too close to each other to be considered just friendly, giggling at whatever the other just said. Ethan’s hand is on Jasper’s, gently rubbing his thumb over her wedding ring, no doubt recalling their own wedding with this group. Kelsey stares longingly at a table across the room, quickly turning her head as Charlie notices her staring.
Schlatt nudges you gently. “What are you thinkin’ about?”
You smile over at him, giving a little shrug. “I just love bein’ with you guys, that’s all.”
“Stop, I’ll cry.” Jasper wipes away a fake tear, sniffling.
“Such a fuckin’ sap,” Schlatt teases, pinching your cheek affectionately.
“Yeahhh, whatever,” You playfully roll your eyes. You open your mouth to tease him back but Mike’s voice over the speakers interrupts you.
“Everybody give it up for Mr. and Mrs. Alvarez!”
The doors to the reception hall fly open and James and Amelia rush out, yelling excitedly as everyone claps and hoots and hollers for them. Schlatt whistles loudly beside you.
“If everyone would please direct their attention to the dance floor, our newlyweds are gonna take to the floor for their first dance.”
Love You For A Long Time by Maggie Rogers starts playing and James pulls Amelia close to him, leading her around the dance floor.
You tear up again. You can’t help it.
As soon as the dance ends, James and Amelia share another kiss as everyone applauds. When they pull away from each other, they share a look, before addressing the room.
“LETS FUCKING PARTY!” They both yell, and Mike immediately gets the party started with their wedding mix.
You grin mischievously at Schlatt, slowly scooting your chair back. “C’mon, Big Guy. Lemme show you some moves.”
Schlatt downs the rest of his whiskey as you grab for his hand, pulling him up out of his seat. “Don’t have to tell me twice.”
You lead him out onto the floor, meeting up with the newlyweds in the center. Amelia wraps her arms around your neck, pressing a kiss to your cheek, laughing as James starts busting a move behind her.
The rest of the wedding party joins you, shouting lyrics at the top of their lungs as you all dance like nobody’s watching.
“Alright, my loves, it’s time for the bouquet toss!” Amelia yells into a mic, waving her bouquet high in the air to get everyone’s attention. “Line up, y’all.”
A large group gathers in front of Amelia, all getting ready. You kind of keep your distance — you know this kind of thing can get brutal. Amelia turns around, swinging the bouquet up once, twice, three times before flinging it over her head.
Before anyone has any time to react, the bouquet lands squarely in your hands, shocking everyone. There’s a beat of silence before everyone cheers, and all of your friends are laughing or shaking your shoulders or whining that it should have been them.
You look up and see Schlatt grinning at you, raising his whiskey glass in congratulations and shooting you a wink.
Mike slows things down after that, and Schlatt pulls you close to him as You’re Still The One by Shania Twain starts to play — one hand on the small of your back, the other clasped in yours as you sway on the dance floor. He holds your hand against his chest, rubbing his thumb over your knuckles.
Schlatt’s smiling down at you, pure adoration on his face. He hums along to the song in your ear, sending shivers down your spine.
The two of you dance in comfortable silence, just enjoying each other’s company, relishing in the fact that you’re even in this position in the first place.
He leans down, capturing your lips in a soft kiss. You can feel him smiling against your mouth.
You’re about to go in for another one when Kelsey runs up to the two of you, out of breath with her eyes wide.
“You’ll never guess who I just found in the supply closet.”
You quirk an eyebrow, eyeing her suspiciously. “Why were you in the supply closet?”
Kelsey’s eyes dart over at Charlie, his hair a mess and his tie crooked, but she waves a dismissive hand. “Not important. Natalie and Ted are in the supply closet.”
“Can no one at this wedding keep it in their pants?” Jasper exclaims as she and Ethan appear next to you and Schlatt.
“I hate to tell ya, but your wedding was just as bad. I found Kass and Swagger hookin’ up in the bathroom at yours.” Schlatt clicks his tongue, holding back a laugh as Jasper’s jaw drops.
“You guys are nasty,” Jasper says, and Ethan only laughs as Jasper whisks him away and back onto the dance floor.
Schlatt shakes his head, and you can’t help the laugh that bubbles out of you at your exasperated friend, giggling into Schlatt’s chest.
A little drunk and fully danced out, you and Schlatt finally return to the hotel, hand in hand, fingers intertwined.
“Your room or mine?” Schlatt asks, as you get back to your rooms.
“Your choice.”
“Yours,” Schlatt says, with a decisive nod. “Your bed’s more comfortable.”
You smile up at him, before digging into your clutch for your room key. As soon as you get the door unlocked, Schlatt’s picking you up bridal style, earning a surprised yelp from you.
“What are you doing?” You laugh, wrapping your arms around his neck as he carries you into the room.
“Practicin’,” Schlatt answers, like it’s obvious, “You caught that bouquet. Means we’re next, doesn’t it?”
You playfully roll your eyes at him, giggling as he sets you down on the bed, settling over you.
Schlatt mentioning a potential marriage has you all kinds of giddy. You had no idea he felt that strongly about you. You pull him down for a kiss, smiling as his lips move from yours to your cheek, and then your nose, and then back to your lips.
“I need you to promise me something.” You say after a moment, looking up at him.
“I’m listening.”
“If I ever, ever say anything that bothers you like that again, you have to tell me.” You tell him, “I don’t want to lose you again over something stupid.”
Schlatt grins down at you.
“You couldn’t even shake me if you tried, toots.”

✨ AUDIOBOOK REVIEW ✨
Daydream by Hannah Grace
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
QOTD: What’s a book you were surprised you enjoyed so much?
[instagram]
Review below cut
Thank you so much Simon & Schuster Australia and Librofm for allowing me access to an ALC of this book. All thoughts are my own.
I surprised myself by how much I enjoyed this. I’d seen some pretty not great reviews for Icebreaker and had put Hannah Grace in my “maybe one day” pile. So when I saw Daydream offered as an ALC I decided to give it a go.
Zero regrets. I loved this romance so much. Halle and Henry are way too cute together. I loved their flirty banter, the way they always looked out for each other, how much they cared for and respected each other. I loved how safe they felt with each other to be themselves and express how they felt.
Both characters and their individual struggles were handled really well. Henry’s ADHD was so well portrayed and his internal struggles were on point. And Halle’s anxiety was so painfully relatable to me.
I ADORED the friend group. Halle’s lack of friends and her own self-worth issues made me so sad for her, so having this group of people rally around her and love and support her made me so happy.
Both narrators absolutely nailed it, btw. 10/10, no notes.
This is the first Maple Hills book I’ve read (I know, I know, totally the wrong order) but I’m definitely keen to read the others now.

Holly Jolly July by Lindsay Maple
Tumblr media
“Holly Joly July” by Lindsay Maple is a romance novel featuring Ellie and Mariah who are both in a Canadian city to film a Christmas movie in July. Unbeknownst to them, they end up seeing the same guy. When they discover the truth, they team up to seek revenge and end up falling for each other instead.
If you’re looking for a book with spicy M/F and F/F scenes, this is the perfect book for you! I personally had to gloss over the former but I can see how this is probably a rare occurrence in the romance novel world. I enjoyed the silliness in the revenge and the opposites attract romance in the relationship between Ellie and Mariah.
The premise is a fun and unique idea for a romance novel, and I enjoyed reading something a bit different. The inclusion of pieces of the script from the movie they were working on was an interesting idea but the excerpts were super cringy (probably intentional, but it caused me to wince every time).
Overall, “Holly Jolly July” is a cute, sweet, and funny book, especially once you get past the f*ckboy and get to the chemistry and romance of Ellie and Mariah. The book combines humor and the realness of people and relationships well.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for the digital ARC!
POV: present tense, first person, two perspectives

"sara," her father said, "life is a prom. / i know you won't disappoint me and mom."
i have been, for some good reason, delving back into my showtunes playlist recently because of corporate boredom, and was struck for the sudden inescapable nostalgic urge for those old animatics that used to be suuuper popular.
anyway for now, i raise you a concept: mitch marner x ballad of sara berry (35MM)
