I was super excited but after thinking it over today... absolutely NOT buying the Switch 2 anytime soon. looks cool but... 450 dollars? and 80 dollar games on top of that? 80??? the only game i Absolutely wanted on it was Pokemon Z-A, and that'll be playable on the Switch 1 anyhow. No sense paying 500+ bucks for one thing when ive already got it all.
I hope the price gouging makes it flop tbh. At least enough to make them Drastically lower the price for these games. As for now, was gonna make it my big B-Day ask but... I don't even think I could do that to other people to make them pitch in for this shit... Maybe 2026 when/if the price goes down. I can keep playing MarioKart 8 in the meantime.

@mae-lody One of my boomer takes is that I really don't like how media is becoming so much more immediate and big and demanding and just entertaining for entertainments sake. I think a lot of it has to do with short form videos becoming the main source of media for a couple generations, but I digress. Some context: I didn't play any of the games between MarioKart Wii and 8 so the differences stick out. MarioKart 8 is uniquely frustrating for me.
My main complaint is that Everything Happens So Much. There's boosts and coins and two item slots and things that look like obstacles that you're supposed to hit and now you're driving on the wall and now you're flying and now you're underwater and there's just so much going on and the race is done in a couple minutes. It feels intensely overstimulating and as a game it's built to be MarioKart but turned up to 150%. I like MarioKart as itself, not the oversaturated, technicolor light show speed race that it's become.
There's also a HUGE amount of buy-in for Mariokart. Nintendo has gotten very very good at getting people to play an absurd amount of one game and learn it like the back of their hand. Take the squid powerup, for instance. It's not balanced for fresh players because if you're experienced and know the map, it's not even an inconvenience to you, but if you are new to the game it's devastating. The entire game is built like that. Theres literal dozens of grand prixs to choose from and lots of the maps aren't even a loop of any kind, they're just one long line. Some of them even have the audacity to take you through the same sections of the map/city but the course turns in different directions each time. That's so hard for new players to play! It takes so long to learn the maps well enough to get comfortable with them, and everyone always has different map preferences anyways. With all the minute cart configurations, the frame, wheels, types, and gliders, as an experienced player you're going to know what fits who perfectly and how to benefit from that. I was FLOORED when someone told me all the characters have different stats too??? And the game doesn't even fucking tell you about them??? The game takes a LOT of playing in order to actually feel like you're having a good time when you're playing with veteran players, who are the only kind of people that ever ask you to play MarioKart (because of the amount of buy-in and game knowledge necessary).
There's a special kind of rage that I have that gets tapped every time someone is like "GASP! You don't like MarioKart?!!!?? Well you obviously haven't played it enough" or a personal favorite: "you just haven't played it with ME." Friends, I have played probably 20+ hours of that game because I get that response every fucking time and everyone always is convinced that they're the one who will change my mind. I've played a ton of it because I've wanted to get a very thorough understanding of what I didn't like about it. So I'm hoping they don't do with 9 what they did with 8 and just turn up the intensity. Which, because of the user base they've made, is probably going to be exactly what they do.
TLDR: Everything Happens So Much and there's so much game knowledge required that it's not fun for new players.
A BRAND NEW MARIO KART HAS JUST CASUALLY BEEN REVEALED BY NINTENDO HOLY FUCKING SHIT

First of all, loving the art style so far. I've seen other people mention this, but the squishification of Mario continues in an upwards trajectory, and I am here for it!
And is that Peach on a motorcycle in her dress with her hair down I see???
Get it, queen!
On another note, I also love that the first track we get to see is a Mario Bros circuit! Would I also like a "Mario Circuit" and a "Luigi Circuit"? Of course, but I think this is the first time we've gotten a proper Mario Bros circuit instead of one bro or the other.
Nintendo really hammering home the fact that those two are a unit.
#tbh calling me a new player feels wrong because I've spent nearly a full calendar day on that game but that's how the fucking game works#you have to play a TON of MarioKart to know it and love it and i just want to drive my silly like gokart around#anyways mariokart wii my beloved#end of speech#my additions#mariokart#mariokart 8

Mario Kart Wii’s Rainbow Road: An Iconic Track Requiring High Skills
Rainbow Road on Mario Kart Wii.
As a gamer who achieved first place in all 32 Mario Kart Wii tracks, Rainbow Road is the hardest course to achieve 1st place. Playing this track on 50cc or 100cc is nowhere near as difficult as driving on 150cc or Mirror Mode (where the track is inverted left-to-right).
While you might enjoy Rainbow Road’s music, you will feel pressured by the following stress factors:
Rainbow Road is the last track of the Special Cup, meaning you will have to play all 4 courses again if you rank poorly.
There are tight turns, little guardrails, and half-pipe jumps that make it easy to fall off the course.
According to a player from TheTopTens,
“Wii Rainbow Road is very fun to play on, and definitely very hard. Add sharp turns to crazy waving roads split paths, speed boosts, risky shortcuts and amazing music and you've got an impossible track.”
Wii Rainbow Road on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Rainbow Road is so difficult that Nintendo added more guardrails when the course was added to the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course DLC.
In my opinion, the newer Rainbow Road doesn’t feel the same. Driving on this course feels like bowling with the bumpers on.

Crucial update: my nephew has upgraded from saying "Yah-Yo" to saying "Mah-Yo" whenever he tries to say "Mario."
#he loves watching Mariokart 8 so he just points at the tv and shouts 'mah-yo!' over and over whenever he wants me to play#not bad for a guy who's not even two#he's a smart cookie#also important: he now says 'yahoo!' whenever I say 'let's-a-go'#I'm so proud of him :)

I've been playing some good ol' Mariokart lately.
Mariokart Double Dash hasn't got many tracks, and none are super amazing, but the gameplay is pretty chaotic. It's unfortunate there's (obviously) no online multiplayer in this version because it would be a blast.
Mariokart 8 Deluxe has a lot of tracks and a lot of polish and an online mode, but unfortunately I get very bored playing this game. The items are tamer, there aren't any differences between the characters or karts, and I suppose the racing isn't that engaging because of the lack of meaningful obstacles or punishment on most courses.
#mariokart#mario kart#nintendo are strange#because i think mariokart 8 is made to be accessible to small children and old people as possible#but why?#is it because they expected it to be wii owners?#i mean considering its origin on the wii u this wouldnt be surprising#they really thought that console would do well as a wii successor...
