Some Malevolent OC requests! Also included are my characters Ashraf M. Fawzi and Mark Bartleby, the latter of which is not a Malevolent oc at all (he predates the show and has his own thing) but a few people in the server seem to like him anyway for some reason. So now he’s occasionally part of Malevolent specific horrors as well. 😆
@jinks050 ‘ Law Hand, contemplating the edibility of a mushroom
Ashraf having tea with @madbadash ‘s Delia as she examines the camera
Ashraf and @insanity-in-the-stars s Maddie having qahwa (of the green tea and cardamom variety, not Turkish coffee). This was a different type of request asking for something to break in a new sketchbook, hence why it’s the only watercolour one c’:
Ashraf and Sylvain Bourreau people watching (he belongs to rabidforillustrations on Instagram!)
Mark and a kitty c: as requested by @jinks050
Thank you guys! Never thought I would be making fan characters and having them interact with everyone but here you go 💖

THERE HE IS THERE HE IS my very overworked guy! I love how perturbed OC is :'D
I love your style so much AHHH--
(Also I would not mind a drawing story chain at ALL. Words I get stuck with, but drawings or at least doodles? I can do that. 👀 )
Artfight 1/6 - Mark belongs to @friskafriskito. It ended up being a little oc story chain which is a fun idea to try in future... Anyway #GiveMarkVacation campaign begins now
#NOT MY ART#artfight2024#vanadric#artfight#my original stuff#(but OC isn't mine just mark on the left)#mark bartleby#stuff for me#you will need to practically drag him into a vacation I think :'D#he's not gonna go willingly

None of the guys in the 141 are immune to gossip, in their own way.
One of Gaz's ways to decompress after deployment is listening to you while you help him catch up with whatever has been happening in your workplace. Mark from legals did what? Wait! Wasn't Shannon, the one two cubicles over, shagging the security guard? She's left him??? Who the hell is Brennan now? Do you all even work? Don't be mad, baby! He was kidding!
Soap is rabid. Are you chatting over the phone with a friend? Put her on speaker, he needs to know everything! What do you mean it's private? What's his is yours and the other way around lass!
Once you tried the TikTok prank on him: you faked being on the phone and kept repeating "He did what?" "Oh! I can't believe he's sunken so low!" While he's losing his mind behind you: what the hell is happening? Throw him a bone bonnie, he's dying over here!
Price is more of a good sport about it and appreciates the intel that might bring to him. At home shares with you what he can, because it makes you giggle and you're invested in some stories at this point: it's your personal version of Eastenders, only with more military! More than once he had tapped you over your shoulder, when you were on the phone with a distraught friend, car keys in hand, ready to drive you to your friend to help them.
Ghost, in the immortal words of Bartleby, the Scrivener, "Would prefer not to''. No, he doesn't want to know the latest gossip on the bitchy physician, thank you. Why are you all subjecting him to the knowledge that the rookies now shag in the broom closet two floors down? He's trying to enjoy his cuppa in the shadows of the rec room! Bleeding Nora! He's trying to eat, please discuss what the general, allegedly, did with his secretary somewhere else!
You know how much gossip irks him, so you tell him about your day, and keep all the juicy stuff for Johnny, the only one to truly appreciates what a snoop you are!

PAC: Your Future Partner's Love Language
Hello beautiful people, tonight marks the third post of the week regarding love! (meaning I kept my promise, yay!) I have a sale going on tomorrow, so be sure to tune into that. If you would look to book a reading, please read my guidelines and then dm me! If you have any inquiries, also dm me! Without further ado, please select your pile!
Top Left-to-Bottom Right: (1-4)

Pile 1: I feel like you’re the independent woman trope, Pile One. This person will be attracted to you because you have your own. But that doesn't mean that they won’t be giving. This isn’t a stingy lover at all. I get Cancer/Capricorn/Aquarius energy from this person. I see this person will be big on gift giving. They will also shower you with compliments. They don’t expect this in return, to be honest. They’re also really big on paying the tab every time at restaurants. I feel like this person is calm and collected. This person wants to follow in their family’s footsteps. They’re big on marriage and doing things the proper way. They would like to show you off, this is part of their love language as well. And lastly, this person really likes to see people stand on business. Part of their love language is helping you plan and put things into action. They’re going to be your number one fan. Expect roses and romance with this person, Pile One.
Cards Used: The Hierophant, The Hermit, 4 of Discs, Queen of Swords
extras: tacos. party pooper. mellow. skilla baby. carrie underwood. bartleby.
Pile 2: So when I was shuffling for this pile, I heard the term ‘yapper’. This person really likes to talk, even if it’s about nothing. I thought of this guy who I sit next to in my English class, and he says whatever comes to mind. I feel like this person just really wants a listening ear since they didn’t get that when they were younger. They could have been the type of kid to have “talks too much” on their report card. They have big Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo energy. This person just wants to be heard and valued for once, they feel taken for granted. This person has the tendency to go down memory lane as well. They also have a thing for tickling. They honestly seem like a big kid. They are really big on humor. Their sense of humor can be deadpan or they could say a lot of one-liner punchlines. Be prepared to laugh a lot. I think this person values one-on-one time a lot as well, Pile Two.
Cards Used: Judgment, Ace of Swords, Death (RX), Eight of Discs (RX), 7 of Discs (RX)
extras: bright teeth. nice style. black beanies. toby from this is us. “kiss the ring.” wrestlers.
Pile 3: Oh man, the chemistry is hot here. This person really likes PDA. They enjoy physical touch. They want you to find any reason to touch them & they want to do the same for you. This person wants everyone to know that y’all are together. They could be a little clingy, let them know if that’s too much for you. I get the feeling that this could be their first real relationship so please be gentle with them. I feel like this person is like a big teddy bear. They really enjoy hugs, sharing drinks with you, cuddling, hand-holding and sloppy kisses. It all makes their world go round. You guys will be engaging in a lot of sexual activity together so please protect yourselves! Overall, this person is not shy. This person is quite the flirt, very physical. They give big Leo, LIbra, Aries energy. You guys are going to be like that one couple in high school that got detention for kissing by the lockers. People might be uncomfortable by your dynamic because you’re so physical with one another, but fuck it!
Cards Used: Knight of Wands, The Chariot, Princess of Cups, The Lovers, Ace of Cups.
extras: sweet face. wink. “hold me.” soft hands. racy. lord farquaad. monochromatic. skin-to-skin.
Pile 4: Can we say dramaaaa? I feel like your person is really dramatic. They’re the epitome of go big, go home. They give off Pisces, Leo, Sagittarius energy. They’re the epitome of male R&B singers in the early 2000s. This person has the best intentions but it can be overwhelming for you at times. Know that this person is doing their best. This is a part of who they are, there’s no faking this personality. I think this person would literally do anything for you. If you were to ask for a cookie from the store, they would bring you the cookie, a sandwich, a drink, chips and flowers just to make your day. This person is really good at planning parties and spending money. If you were to have a birthday coming up, they would have a surprise party planned with all of your favorite people there and thoughtful gifts. This person wants to give you the world, honestly. Don’t feel embarrassed by the things that this person does because you deserve it. They do it out of purity, but you can tell them to tone it down if it’s really getting to you.
Cards Used: The Emperor, The Fool, Justice, 7 of Cups, Ace of Discs, Princess of Cups
extras: my way by usher. “It’s camp.” new edition. clown colors. teezo touchdown. rich uncle vibes.

Hii, I was wondering if you had any recs of a writer/author John au. I've found some of author Sherlock, but none of John except his blogging that he does normally. if you don't do recs anymore or don't feel like answering feel free to ignore and have a lovely day! <3
Hi Nonny!
Oh I'm still doing weekly lists, I just don't get many asks for them anymore so I feel like y'all don't like them anymore LOL. BUT!! Your ask is a fantastic excuse to use your ask as a list prompt since I don't have one ready for today!! I actually find the opposite, that there seem to be more "writer John" fics more than the other way around, especially as I've been going through my lists.
That said, I've done a tag search for "writer" and "author" on my offline lists, and here's what I got! Hope you enjoy and as usual, if anyone has any fics that they would like to suggest, please add them below!!
WRITER / AUTHOR JOHN
BOOKMARKS
A Gossamer Dream by CarmillaCarmine (E, 15,985 w., 4 Ch. || Writer/Teacher AU || First Meetings, Friends to Lovers, Writer John / Teacher Sherlock, Fluff, London, Holding Hands, Online Friendship / Romance, Phone Sex, Anal Sex, Happy Ending, Alternating POV, Scottish John, Online Relationship, Internalized Homophobia, Hand Holding, Forehead Touching, First Kiss/Time, Texting/Sexting, Rimming, Toplock, Sherlock Speaks French) – Sherlock had never realised one could care so much about someone they'd never met in person. Now he is about to meet the friend with whom he's been chatting online for months and his anticipation is reaching a crescendo. Part 19 of Johnlock Smut (with Feels)
Being John Watson-ish by elwinglyre (E, 69,902 w., 17 Ch. || Bodysnatcher AU || Author John, Cranky Sherlock, Angst, Sexual Tension, First Kiss / Time, Falling in Love, BAMF John, Past Soldier John, Feelings, Inside Someone’s Brain, Shy Sherlock, Sherlock Loves John, POV Sherlock, Switchlock, Slow Burn, Internal Dialogue, Mental Turmoil) – When consulting detective Sherlock Holmes steps on one toe too many at a crime scene, he's consigned to a desk job in an archaic office on the seventh-and-a-half floor of the New Scotland Yard. It’s in this bleak office that Sherlock discovers a portal into the mind of renowned author John Watson. Grander than his mind palace, this new wonderland affords Sherlock new vistas of experimentation. To learn more about the mystery behind the portal, Sherlock seeks out and befriends Watson. But then it all goes wrong when others find the secret portal door—including the man whose brain he visits.
MARKED FOR LATER
Exposition - An Ex Files Special by 7PercentSolution (T, 7,643 w., 12 Ch. || POV Second Person, Angst, Bereavement, Poetry / Haiku, Hallucinations, Writing as Therapy) – John's a writer. However much Sherlock derided the blog, people read what he writes. After the fall, John's writing takes a surprisingly different approach. This sets the context for a series of chapters, each one including a different poem by John. Part 4 of Ex Files
keywords: Gay, Loving, Boyfriends by lookupkate (E, 17,771 w., 17 Ch. || Doctor John AU || Alternate First Meeting, Hospitals, John Writes Smut, Sherlock Reads Smut, Fanfiction) – John starts writing gay romance while holed up in hospital. Sherlock reads the first fic on accident, and it sticks with him for days. He can't help but read more from the unknown writer. Little does he know, the writer isn't exactly unknown to him. The writer happens to be the A&E Doctor he's feuding with. Christ, can you imagine what he'll think once he finds out?
Dead Letter Office by a_different_equation (M, 20,364 w., 15 Ch. || ‘Bartleby’ Fusion / Office Setting AU || Different First Meeting, Epistolary, John's Blog, Angst with a Happy Ending, Pre-Canon, John Watson is Sherlock's Boss, PTSD John, Military Backstory, Writer John, Drug Use, Texting) – John Watson comes home from the war, gets a new job and meets Sherlock Holmes through Mike Stamford. Same tale since 1891, except this time it’s 2008, John is Sherlock’s boss, and they work together at the Dead Letter Office in London. It's not a love story, until it finally is.
The Reawakening of John Watson by 221b_careful_what_you_wish_for (E, 20,463 w., 14 Ch. || Historical 1800s American/Victorian AU || Artist Sherlock, Writer John, Angst with Happy Ending, Bisexual John, Period Typical Homophobia, Sensuality, Experienced Sherlock, Pining, Past Drug Use, Slow Burn, Love Confessions, Flirty Sherlock, Frottage, Outdoor Sex, Trust Issues, Minor Character Death, Sexual Tension, Colorado / London, Rimming, Anal Sex, Blow Jobs, POV John) – Trying to escape his troubled past in England, John Watson has started a new life in the American West. When he meets the handsome artist Sherlock Holmes, a smoldering attraction is sparked, complicating his quiet, carefully guarded existence. Maybe taking a risk with Sherlock is exactly what John needs to feel alive again...
The Key to Castles in the Air by LadyKailitha (T, 34,365 w., 21 Ch. || Author AU || Enemies to Friends to Lovers, Bratty Sherlock, Damaged Sherlock, Romance, Shop Clerk/Writer John) – John is a clerk (and writing a book on the side) at a bookshop run by Mrs Hudson. The one downside to this perfect job is Sherlock Darling, Mrs Hudson's friend who loves to rile John up. About everything. All that changes when they are forced to spend a week together in the country when bad weather hits. Sherlock's got secrets. What will John do once he finds them out?
There I Saw You, Night by esplanade (T, 54,073 w., 12 Ch. || Writer AU || Poet Sherlock, Writer John, True Love, Sherlock's A Mess, Conversations, John's Family) – "It wasn't as if he had stopped writing entirely. Quite the opposite, in fact. It was just that most of what he wrote ended up thrown into the fireplace at home. What was the sense in keeping something that was sub-par?"
This Is Your Song by agirlsname (E, 79,990 w., 19 Ch. || Moulin Rouge Fusion || Prostitute Sherlock, Poet John, Acting, Singing, Dancing, Writing, Poetry, Musical, Song Fic, Heavy Angst, Unreliable Narrator, Sherlock is French, Love at First Sight, UST, First Kiss/Time, Frottage, Coming in Pants, Anal Sex, Switchlock, Clothed Sex, Crossdressing, Secret Relationship, Forbidden Love, Jealousy, Terminal Illnesses, Grief/Mourning, Breakup/Makeup Sex, Past Drug Use, Attempted Rape, Canon-Typical Violence)– When John Watson is invalided home from the army in 1895, he moves to Paris to rediscover his writing and find a new meaning in life. His old friend Stamford invites him into a group of artist friends, and suddenly John finds himself auditioning to write a show for the famous brothel across the street. There, he meets the most beautiful man he’s ever seen - Sherlock, the star of the Moulin Rouge. But Sherlock is already promised to the investor of the show, the rich Duke Moriarty.
A Case of Identity – The Musical by shamelessmash (E, 83,147 w., 15 Ch. || 1950′s Hollywood AU || Musical, Case Fic, Undercover as an Actor, Dancing, Happy Ending, Kidnapping, Drugs, Fluff and Angst, Humour, Writer/Director John, Slow Burn / Romance) – A mysterious death on set causes chaos in Stamford productions latest movie. With the premiere date left unchanged, they must find a new lead actor and reshoot an entire movie in two months. Sherlock Holmes goes undercover as a lead actor in a Musical: a juggling act to solve a murder while singing, dancing and charming his way through 1950s Hollywood. The last thing he expected was to fall in love with the screenwriter along the way. Or as I like to call it: the case where Sherlock finally gets to dance.

She can rescue herself but perhaps life is more fun together….
When Linda Dexington is kidnapped by Sir Bartleby de Muis, a man who has refused to take no for an answer, only one solution is possible: she must rescue herself. Escaping the carriage is not a problem, especially when they are held up by a highwayman. Escaping the unwanted attentions of Sir Bartleby may be a bit more problematic.
Marti Babbitt got more than he bargained for with his attempted highway robbery. Instead of finding an easy mark, he discovered his long-lost childhood friend, Linda. Linda claims she can rescue herself, thank you very much, but when the kidnapper continues to pursue her, maybe Marti can rescue her after all…

Are you kidding mee, I got full marks on the Barthes and Bartleby portions of the exam, half marks on the bit I wrote rushedly about some poem, and then the final portion I had to leave blank because I spent so much time lovingly wrting the first two. I need to learn to do exams with a little bit less passion.
#l33chsp34k#I expected this result and will be retaking it though.#Oh Bartleby... You will be the death of me. I wrote I don't know how many words about you.#Then like. Two sentences on the poem.#Never let it be said that I'm not biased!

Bartleby Looks for a New Job
Bartleby had been unemployed for three weeks when his adblocking service subscription ran out. He was on his way to another interview when it hit. The air rippled around him. Then? The colors of NYC were brighter more like a cartoon, or memory than the city he knew. A mousey young woman with flawless skin & improbably shiny dark hair smiled at Bartleby. As she passed, she pressed a calling card into his palm— reflexively he took it unable to help smiling back. “not again” he thought. Going from premium adblock to “basic” had been bad enough— at least, with ‘basic’ ads had to be clearly marked, They couldn’t use personal memories to ‘customize the experience’. The dark haired girl was similar to Samantha, an accounting student from freshman year. How did the algorithm know about his silent desperate crush? He watched her walk away, shapely legs, marked with brown eyeliner from heel to hip in imitation of silk stockings —then felt disgusted for paying so much attention.
But, now Bartleby was fully exposed to the toxic onslaught of reality-distorting advisements— anything he encountered could be manipulated, enhanced, warped to push him to buy products, to believe in political ideology— to venerate influencers. Doing job interviews like this would be a constant struggle. He looked at the calling card fake Samantha had given him — not a QR code as he expected, but rather a hand written note:
“heard you needed a new job. :)” it said. and signed “Samantha” in her unmistakable handwriting.
Bartleby was a programmer and accountant— he felt like he understood computers and what they were capable of. But now he wondered if he’d fallen behind on the newest developments. There was no way the algorithm could have known Samantha’s handwriting… was there? That was too elaborate— too much effort just to sell him something.
Could it have really been her? The card also contained a phone number. Next to it: “text me!”

Sonic Underground episode 37: Bartleby the Prisoner
I’m watching Sonic Underground in search of inspiration to finish a fic I’ve been writing forever. It’s a sad state of affairs. See the recap of the first three episodes here, if you're interested!
The plot (for want of a better word): Time is up for Bartleby’s cushy life on the thin line. Accused of helping the Resistance, Bartleby is put on trial. Will the Sonic Underground risk everything to save Robotnik’s greatest investor, or will Sonia turn her back on the greatest love of her life?
Dun-dun-DUNNNN.
Aleena is so unimpressed with Bartleby and the other aristocrats. Which. You know. We get it. Eat the rich and all that.
Mind you, Bartleby is chugging boiling tea LIKE A CHAMP. I pity his oesophagus, but a SWATbot barges in and arrests him before he can continue doing serious damage to himself. You immediately know something’s up because the SWATbot talks about a jury. Robotnik doesn’t normally bother with juries. So the audience immediately calls Trap. We’ll see how long it takes the characters to get there.
Meanwhile, Sonia is guiding the boys to a ruby mine Resistance Intelligence insists exists. Manic can’t see it, so he doesn’t think it’s there, but Sonia (very impatiently – apparently this is a repeated conversation) points out that illusions are a thing. She is immediately proven correct, with her calculations only off by a metre or so. Sonic asks us to be impressed with his sister. Brace for an episode of GRRL Power.
Apparently these rubies are very pure and will be very powerful in weapons. I am not certain rubies can be used for weapons, but whatever. The point is, this is an important operation for them to disrupt.
CYRUS! Cyrus gives them a new machine that will be used to dig through things. He also informs us that we’ll be meeting TREVOR this episode, so it’s all recurring OCs on deck!
While Sonia details her three-fold plan, the boys are making chilli dogs with the laser and not paying any attention. Because boys are irresponsible. But first, somehow, Sonia gets a live feed of Bartleby’s trial, and (correctly) assumes that he’s been arrested because of his association with her.
For the record, in the trial, Sleet is the prosecutor, Dingo is the defence attorney, a legion of SWATbots is the jury, and Robotnik is the judge. Archie comics had two legitimate kangaroos in their court and it was still a fairer trial, in case that’s not obvious.
Sonia sneaks off to visit Bartleby in his cell, but Bartleby insists she leave before she’s captured. Sonia insists she’s going to rescue him, but takes the opportunity to guilt trip him for not joining the resistance. Even though SHE only joined because she had no other choice. Just pointing that out. Don’t remember that.
And I know I’ve said it before, but I just want to draw attention to two things. One, Bartleby starts to say “if you’re honestly happier in the resistance –” and it’s pretty obvious this is him being a supportive little idiot. He loves his girl. Two, while Sonic Underground loathes its aristocrats and their willingness to follow Robotnik, I have to remind you of just how SCARED they all are. This episode, and what’s happening to Bartleby in it, is only strange because they’re bothering with a trial, and the series up to this point has made this VERY CLEAR. They DON’T THINK Robotnik can be beaten. They think joining the Resistance is a death sentence. People will do terrible things to survive. This series has no patience for the aristocrats but I love how well they showed why the aristocrats do what they do and arghhh this trashfire is so good sometimes!
Meanwhile, Robotnik admits to the audience that this is all a trap to get Sonia, and with her, her brothers. No one is surprised.
And at the 11 minute mark, Dingo runs his mouth to Bartleby about this being a trap. Bartleby is naturally horrified, but quickly decides he needs to find a way to save Sonia. He changes his plea to guilty so she has no reason to rescue him and get trapped.
BUT. While the triplets and Trevor are on their mission, Sonic has been watching Bartleby’s trial, and so hears the change in plea. Sonia is naturally horrified when he tells her.
But they have a mission, and it’s going badly. They’re basically surrounded, they lose one of their ships and nearly Trevor, and it’s all looking pretty dire, but egh. It works out after some drama, when they find the ruby stash.
Sonia attaches one of the rubies to her keyboard gun and uses it to destroy everything else. Day saved, Sonia immediately steals the digging machine and disappears to save Bartleby. Sonic is unimpressed with her walking into a trap and grabs Manic to run after her.
But, y’know, Sonic’s a bit faster than the machine, so they get there first and are very annoyed to realise that means they don’t get to pretend they’re only there to save Sonia. I admit I snickered at the delivery of “oh great! Now WE have to rescue Bartleby.”
Manic is remarkably useful in this fight, actually sneaking up to hack and disable some SWATbots! Sonia then appears, with her ruby-powered gun, and the triplets come together for
The Song: Justice Calling. Really, really nice drums. I mean, just… NICE beat. Like it a lot. The lyrics are “We’re not gonna take it” with the serial numbers filed off, but there is nothing wrong with that. This is some 80s rebellion pop-rock and I am not complaining.
They save Bartleby, but it’s all proven pointless because in the evening, Robotnik makes an announcement that ‘evidence’ came to light that Bartleby was innocent and always was. So, you know, the status quo is maintained if this episode is shown ahead of the others. BUT the episode itself basically implies that Bartleby IS leaving his aristocrat life to go into hiding. And I don’t think we’re going to see him again. LeDiz is sad about this.
And then we have a Casablanca reference, complete with ‘here’s looking at you, kid’, and it’s very strange.
But we end on Sonic and Manic telling Sonia she’s the best freedom fighter, and I just… nod and accept.
So. The counters:
Sonic implying less than 100% American heterosexuality: 7
Sonia in love with Bartleby: 7/37
Sonia in love with someone who is not Bartleby: 3/37
Sonia’s got super strength: 4
Manic’s thieving Is A Problem: 6
I do believe that's the last time they're going to be added to, but we have another three episodes to prove me wrong! I'll talk about why I've been counting at the end.
I… will also hold off on reflecting on Bartleby and Sonia, but I have to say, rewatching this as an adult, I have a lot more time for him and am a much bigger shipper than I used to be. I’ve always preferred them as a couple over any of her other potentials (as a kid, I would have said Raphie was a love interest but I just didn’t see it this time), but I have a lot of time for THIS star-crossed lovers trope. Which is funny, because I don’t think Sonia DOES. But that ISN’T getting in the way of my ship, and… hm. HMM.
Anyway, moving on.

most unique character you’ve read?
Thanks, it's an interesting question—and strangely difficult to answer. "Unique" in my personal opinion? Or relative to some historical baseline of common characters? Uniqueness in characters is also hard to get right: too unique and they become unintelligible, or else merely zany. It's a quality gently discouraged by systematizing critics: Marxists who prefer characters to be socially typical, for example, or psychoanalysts or structuralists who'd rather they be mythical or archetypal. But even the pure aesthete has concerns here: a character unique enough to get up and walk out of the book—my own ambition with some of my characters, like Alice Nicchio-Strand of Portraits and Ashes or Ash del Greco of Major Arcana—may violate a book's hard-won sense of accomplished style. So some great prose stylists didn't create terribly unique characters, likely in consequence of their style's very integrity: e.g., Hemingway, Woolf, DeLillo. Melville has a metafictional reflection on the creation of original characters in The Confidence-Man:
As for original characters in fiction, a grateful reader will, on meeting with one, keep the anniversary of that day. True, we sometimes hear of an author who, at one creation, produces some two or three score such characters; it may be possible. But they can hardly be original in the sense that Hamlet is, or Don Quixote, or Milton’s Satan. That is to say, they are not, in a thorough sense, original at all. They are novel, or singular, or striking, or captivating, or all four at once.
[...]
Furthermore, if we consider, what is popularly held to entitle characters in fiction to being deemed original, is but something personal—confined to itself. The character sheds not its characteristic on its surroundings, whereas, the original character, essentially such, is like a revolving Drummond light, raying away from itself all round it—everything is lit by it, everything starts up to it (mark how it is with Hamlet), so that, in certain minds, there follows upon the adequate conception of such a character, an effect, in its way, akin to that which in Genesis attends upon the beginning of things.
Melville created at least two unique characters, though none in The Confidence-Man: Ahab, however derived from the Shakespearean tragic hero, and the much more unprecedented Bartleby, whose baffling quasi-protest spawns the whole universe of Kafka and Beckett. Likewise Dostoevsky's titular idiot Prince Myshkin. Speaking of Shakespearean tragic heroes, Hamlet as tormented and antic intellectual was pretty unique for his time, with only a handful of precedents in Boccaccio or Marlowe. Don Quixote, as Melville mentions, one source of Dostoevsky's idiot. But also for Austen's Emma, who beats Flaubert's Emma by a few decades to become our first inward, domestic Quixote, and the grandmother of all those Henry James and other errant modernist heroines. Speaking of such heroines: Lawrence's Ursula Brangwen, another kind of Austenian granddaughter, on an adventure across classes and continents to discover or disclose the reality of her soul. Conrad's Kurtz, a new type of nightmare: the modern rational utopian gone to the dark side. Leopold Bloom in his cyclopedic modernity, his perverse appetites, his bittersweet kindnesses. And his own descendant, and descendant of the Wildean dandy, too, Djuna Barnes's Dr. Matthew-mighty-grain-of-salt-Dante-O'Connor. If I can switch genres, the speakerly personae of the poems of Whitman and Dickinson, unanticipated variations on the Romantic temperament inaugurated by the aforementioned Hamlet: the poet as democratic man, the poet as modern anchoress. Coming down to our own time, character in literature attenuates, as James Wood once complained, swamped in style and mere knowingness. Morrison's anarch Sula comes to mind, though, and McCarthy's Judge Holden, who is, as someone or other said, less Ahab than the whale. I'm sure I'm missing someone obvious, but that's who I've got right now.
