Some other quotes about vulnerability that I like:⁣ ⁣ “The bottom line is that vulnerability is scary and it feels really dangerous, but it’s not nearly as dangerous or scary as spending your life on the outside looking in and wondering, ‘What if I had chosen to show up?’” –Brené Brown⁣ ⁣ “It may be uncomfortable to express your own thoughts and feelings. It may also be uncomfortable to hear the truth of someone else’s current thoughts and feelings. But those thoughts and feelings should never be suppressed. The only way that anyone can be in a real relationship is if those current truths are out on the table. Otherwise we can not really love the person we think we love, because we don’t even see the truth of who they are in this moment. We are in essence, in love with an illusion. We are in essence, asking people to love an illusion of ourselves unless we are willing to be vulnerable and open enough to show them the truth of who we are in this moment.” –Teal Scott ⁣ ⁣ “To be a good human being is to have a kind of openness to the world, an ability to trust uncertain things beyond your own control, that can lead you to be shattered in very extreme circumstances for which you were not to blame. That says something very important about the condition of the ethical life: that it is based on a trust in the uncertain and on a willingness to be exposed; it’s based on being more like a plant than like a jewel, something rather fragile, but whose very particular beauty is inseparable from that fragility.” –Martha Nussbaum⁣ ⁣

#inktober2018 #day22 #roles : the big one, the job that seperates us from the animals #philosopher, and I gotta admit I thought #women weren't allowed to do this until like the 60s or something, however I would bet against my assumption because we have pythagorian philosopher Theano, neoplatonist #hypatia and #aspasia formed an intellectual hub at her house that drew the likes of socrates to the scene. She got mentions by plato and xenophon in their writings. Anyway more recently female formulators of #thegoodlife theories include #marywollstonecraft #simonedebeauvoir representing for my team of #existentialists #hannaharendt #polymath #margaretcavendish currently active thinkers in #marthanussbaum and #judithbutler and #sallyhaslanger. There have even been embarassing female philosophers like #aynrand with her garbage objectivism! A veritable smorgasbord with something for everyone. Philosophy may also be unique in that it rarely if ever is depicted in popular culture, yet people everywhere, always have been drawn to the pursuit of understanding what indeed constitutes a good life, and men have not succeeded in keeping it a boys only club, even when it went down in the gymnasium, those philosophy bro-dude-jocks... #sarahsilverman did a great piece with #willferrell as socrates I recommend watching it on youtube. #inktober #toga #inktoga #watercolor #ink #brush #fineliner https://www.instagram.com/p/BpQMGJhnJ5O/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=yttyeef55thn

“Trust involves opening oneself to the possibility of betrayal, hence to a very deep form of harm. It means relaxing the self-protective strategies with which we usually go through life, attaching great importance to actions by the other over which one has little control. It means, then, living with a certain degree of helplessness.” #marthanussbaum #american #philosopher #readafuckingbook #angerandforgiveness https://www.instagram.com/p/CF_7YGUhHw_/?igshid=1gy00dmp909a5

Love isn’t a refusal to see flaws or mistakes; that’s Pollyannaism and it’s a form of anxiety-driven denial destined to end in disaster. Love is a sober embrace of harsh truths, a commitment to care and understand in the face of struggle. “Understanding someone’s suffering is the best gift you can give another person,” wrote Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. “Understanding is love’s other name.” This holds true for loving ourselves just as much as it does for loving others. Yes, things are too often messy and scary and hard. Even still, we must face those realities if we want to love ourselves and others. Understanding and acceptance are essential to the art of love. As the psychologist Carl Rogers put it, “People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don’t find myself saying, ‘Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner.’ I don’t try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.”

The Fragility of Goodness
Some nights I fold my hands into fists and yell into the void:
“Fuck you, First Mover, for cursing me with consciousness. I did not ask for being, did not will my own contingency.”
And some nights I hear the world whisper, “it is good that you are”.
And other nights, I hear silence.

Philosopher Martha Nussbaum On Liberal Arts Education
Tumblr media
Ever since I read her book Not For Profit, I've been drawn to University of Chicago professor Martha Nussbaum's take on the tension between economic and educational drive.  In this video, Nussbaum discusses not only the problem of placing economic need above all else, but does so with an expansive international perspective. why do we hide from ourselves?
so i’m all alone at home. yet i still lock my bathroom door before i shower. why? is it purely out of habit? or does it reveal a deeper insecurity?  perhaps it’s the artificially constructed sense of shame. shame of not only our naked bodies, but shame of our true selves as well.  why do we feel this “primitive shame”, a shame “at the very fact of human imperfection”? why do we desire to hide our humanity, which manifests in an unrealistic and sometimes pathological wish to be invulnerable?  such unnecessary shame and disgust embodies “magical ideas of contamination, and impossible aspirations to purity that are just not in line with human life as we know it”.  we need to be suspicious of social conventions of shame, which are often unreliable guides to human behaviour. we need to let go of baseless prejudice and stigma arising from questionable feelings of disgust.  we need to... embrace what it means to be human.  - inspired by Martha C. Nussbaum in ‘Hiding from Humanity:Disgust, Shame, and the Law’.
