Here comes my review (mostly writing & lore) of the Mass Effect Official Cocktail Book. I also included a list of all characters named with all page numbers related to their mentions.

I’m including this for our Andromeda Appreciation Week because the last part of the book is Andromeda-related :)

Introduction:

Cassandra Reeder is the recipe developer and Jim Festante is the writer.

The book is written by two writers in-universe. The first one is an asari calling herself “Ambree T’Sia” who is a lot like Gossip Girl (“you won’t guess and I’ll never tell” is an actual line in the book). We have to guess her identity but she doesn’t mind spreading a lot of stories about people and their drinks. 

The second writer is an angara called Roa who decided to add recipes to T’Sia’s existing ones, but more adapted to the Andromeda Galaxy. Roa dreams of a better world for everyone. He’s friend with Dutch and Anan from the Vortex.

Each writer presents drinks based on locations: bars and spots in the two galaxies. There also some snacks recipes as well.

Review: 

It’s hard for me to say anything about the recipes, though I will say it seems like there are different ingredients so a bit of everything for everyone. The difficulty can be adjusted: I thought some drinks looked really complicated to make (and some use other drinks in the books as base), but if you want to do a simple cocktail/mocktail, there are at least 10 good options.

Some recipes are directly named after characters or inspired by characters, so it might be fun to try some based on your favs. 

One drink seems weird to me, and that’s the N7 Shooter (mostly because of the mix of ingredients). If you try it, tell me what you think. 

Regarding American measurement: if you want to be precise, I would wait for a translation. Otherwise, I would get a cup and google some stuff before making it.

So that’s pretty much it for the food & drinks, sorry!

My review is more about the lore and the writing.

I found the witty tone enjoyable. I like that there’s a distinction between how T’Sia writes and how Roa writes at the end of the book. T’Sia gossips a lot but there’s no malice. Roa is very earnest and seems quite adorable to me.

You’ll see I wrote down all the characters named and the pages, sometimes it says something about the writer, sometimes not.  A good example: Samantha is mentioned 5 times by T’Sia. She finds her charming and young, and mostly links her to drinks and other people (a full EDI/Traynor-like drink is in there). Meanwhile, Drack is mentioned 4 times, Vetra 3 times, but Roa has an entire page about how fascinated he is by Vetra.

Regarding what we learn, lore-wise: not a whole lot. It mostly plays on what we already know. 

What we do learn has to do with some characters. Without being too spoilery, it’s very light and fun for the most part - like Joker and Steve having a challenge, Vega seducing T’Sia, characters loving specific drinks (like Traynor), etc. Some characters (like Kaidan and Miranda) are sharing their woes or backstory. Roa, in the later part of the book, talks a lot about Dutch and their meeting is very very cute.

My favorite anecdote is that Liam’s movie night spreads to the Nexus and becomes a tradition :)

Some characters are very absent while others are more present. I would say it’s logical in a way, but it’s one thing to be aware of. If you’re a fan of Jaal, there are no mentions in the book. Though, like I said, a mention doesn’t always mean a lot: Peebee is mentioned once but we learn nothing new.  I also found it a bit sad that Ashley is not in the book. Obviously, I’m happy to have Kaidan there, but Ashley would have been a wonderful character for fun anecdotes here.

Fanfic tag game

Found a 2 year old tag game in my likes and I don't know if I ever replied! Thank you @hermitknut for tagging me all this time ago :D

Fandom(s): My first big fandom was HP. I wrote a little bit in German for Firefly and Discworld, and then in English for Green Rider, Rogue One, Good Omens, Mass Effect (trilogy + Andromeda), Rivers of London and The Memoirs of Lady Trent.

Number of fics: 23 on ao3. There are some, especially older HP stories on ff.de, that I haven't archived on ao3.

1. Fic you spent the most time on: I have a 70k unpublished (German) Minerva McGonagall/Pomona Sprout schoolgirl romance on my hard drive that would need a lot of reworking in order to be in a shape I would consider putting out there. I worked on that for a year on and off, and then for a summer intensely. From my published work: Probably my RoL one, Bintumani, because it's 12k and the words have to have come from somewhere. Also I spent a lot of time conversing with my beta reader and editing the fic.

2. Fic you spent the least time on: Sleepless Night, the 200 word Good Omens ficlet that I literally typed on my phone instead of sleeping.

3. Longest fic: Bintumani, my Rivers of London travel adventure with Elsie Winstanley and Mamusu Grant in the late 1970s in Sierra Leone which I wrote for yuletide last year.

4. Shortest fic: again Sleepless Night with 200 words :D

5. Most hits: For my English works: What we're made of, my trans Viktor Krum with Hermione at the yule ball HP fic that I wrote for the Trans Wizarding Tournament (a charity auction for trans organisations). But overall, if I count fanfiktion.de, it's Spürst du die Funken, my Dean Thomas/Seamus Finnigan getting together that I still want to translate into English. I have the half finished translation on my hard drive.

8. Fave fic you wrote: hard to tell, and I'll just copy hermitknut's words: "normally whenever I’ve just finished something that one’s my favourite :)" but if I had to chose, I'd say my Lady Trent fic, Studying Dragons, if only because I love the books so much.

9. Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: oh that's easy! I want to expand on To Serve the Sacred, my latest ME Andromeda fic. It's part of a big worldbuilding headcanon I have and I would love to put more of it into a story. Much of the worldbuilding (and the story I linked above) is about the game's Bad Guys, and a) I would need to make readers care about it and b) it would be more interesting to write it from the perspective of known characters. The worldbuilding reveals/twists that I want to do are very clear in my head, and I have a vague idea how to set it up in a story, but ... I need to work out the details, especially which characters I'd use as POV characters. Probably the other Ryder twin, but they'd need a team too, and the characters are only slowly starting to take shape. Also it's such a big project that I've put it on the backburner for now bc I don't have the time for writing plot / novel length fic in English.

10. Share a bit of your WIP or share a story idea that you’re planning: I'm only writing in German right now because that flows easier. My fandom of choice is that one German detective/crime show with the dysfunctional homoerotic dynamic between two of the leads that gets to no1 trending on tumblr once year when there's a new episode. This is now for a story about teenage queer self discovery: (Sorry I tried putting it through Google Translate to share an English version but the translation is terrible.)

Leo war nicht schwul, aber wenn er es wäre, dann wäre es Adam vielleicht nicht recht, wenn Leo ihm so nahe war. Wenn er es wäre, dann müsste Leo fairerweise aufhören, neben Adam zu sitzen.

Thess vs Bioware Twitter-Spam

One of the things I’ve noticed on Twitter lately is Bioware still spamming the place with its job openings. This is worrisome on a number of levels, not least of which is that they’re looking specifically for people for, as a for-instance, Dragon Age 4, which is supposed to be out sometime next year and should be well into development by now. And we’re talking jobs like Technical Engineer, Technical Designer, Senior UX Technical Designer, Environment Artist, Technical Animator, and Senior VFX Artist.

Now, I don’t know a lot about how video games are made, but I know how to use Google and I’ve read things. So I might be wrong, so I’m keeping it to the following generality: they’re calling for people in visual effects (everything from spellcasting to waterfalls, as far as I’m aware), environments (see above), animation (how everything from visual effects to environments to characters move), and user interface (UX; does what it says on the tin). Them looking so very desperately for people in those areas - particularly two in senior positions - suggests that there are some issues with those segments of the game. Which, at this relatively late stage (I know it’s due next year, but we’re nearly halfway into 2022 at this point), is worrisome. Particularly given that they’re insisting they’re “on track for release in 2023″ as per an article printed about eleven days ago, and yet looking for senior staff in some really key areas by spamming Twitter about it.

Of course, a lot of people on Twitter are turning it into a massive joke. “Can I make the tea?” “Can you wait five years while I finish my degree?” “Can I just come hang out?” Others are turning it into calls for an Andromeda sequel (which the next Mass Effect game might be for all they know) and a return of Anthem (which ... you do you, fam, but it ain’t gonna happen). But a few actually remember what the Bioware employees who worked on Anthem, and Andromeda, and Dragon Age: Inquisition went through. They remember the stress casualties. They remember “Bioware Magic”. And while I’m not seeing it said, I think a few of them have to be asking themselves why Bioware are having to fill two senior positions that are key to development of any game at this relatively late stage in said game’s development? What happened? What went wrong? What sort of work environment will we be entering, when you add this desperation to Bioware’s increasingly bad reputation in terms of staff?

So for those of you waiting for DA4 (and yes, I am somewhat one of them, though warily as ever these days) ... you might want to brace yourself. Whether that bracing is for a delayed release date announced sometime in mid-2023 because they can’t evade any longer, or for a game with the same kind of issues Andromeda had for the exact same reasons? I couldn’t say. But let’s face it: looking for a new senior user interface technical designer at this stage in the game’s development does not bode well for the kind of game we want, pray for ... and frankly deserve.

Watch this space. Things are afoot.

Absolutely! Usually just a short ‘thank you’, but I still try to respond to anything I get!

Hmm, a lot of my fics fall into the ‘angst with a happy ending’ category, so that’s a bit hard to say... best fit for this would probably be To The Bride (Dragon Age, F!Cousland/Anora)

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Again, hard to say! I have a lot of short fics that sweet & simple endings.  Coffee And Honey Cake (Pillars Coffeshop!AU) is probably the fluffiest all the way through, since that’s kind of my apology to Nona for her canon-verse being so angsty XD

Not really...I do quite a bit of AU’s, but that’s not really the same. Closest I’ve come is with The Dunryd Archives, my Pillars MagnusArchives!AU

*shrug*? I never really had a favorite ship, since my fav ships vary depending on my mood and what I’m into at the moment

I will finish all my WIPs! I cannot be stopped! (Although I admit  Prodigy has been on the back burner for a good while, but still. It will be finished!)

What are your writing strengths?

I think do pretty good characterization, especially with inner dialogue, and character relationships- I have been told I write good banter, which feels like a fantastic compliment XD

What are your writing weaknesses?

Plot, my goodness. I admire people who write original plots so much- I can make OC’s and world-build in my head, but I almost never have a plot to go with it

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I don’t really have any? Obviously it works best if the author is actually fluent in the language and doesn’t just use Google Translate, but I don’t care much one way or the other

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Harry Potter, which is probably like...the basic bitch of fandoms, lol, but middle school me loved it!

What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

Ooh, that’s really tough! I like a lot of my fics for very different reasons. Of Diamonds And Dust (Dragon Age Origins novelization with Aeducan & Brosca) is the one I’ve been working on the longest, and I’m always going to be very fond of it. I think Divinity (Pillars, Goddess!Nona AU) has some of my best writing. And With Grace In Your Heart (Pillars, Desta character study) will always have a very special place in my heart because it was the first fic I wrote for Pillars and was when I really established Desta’s character.

- This question took me a while until I remembered VALORANT

5: A popular series/game you just can’t get into no matter how much you try?

- Fallout New Vegas. I had to install an environment mod just to be able to look at it and tell things apart. I like the story but the weapons, crafting etc... I just can't.

Also The Witcher series. I want to like it so bad but I can't grasp the combat in 3 and I don't feel anything towards Geralt as a protagonist so my motivation isn't very high. It was really fun watching my sister play it though

13: A game you were the most excited for when it wasn’t released yet?

- I've only discovered a few games before release, I think I got into Dragon Age just as Inquisition was out.. I'd say Andromeda and Cyberpunk 2077... 😬 And Baldur's Gate 3 my beloved 💖

16: Character you’ve hated most? From what game?

- You're giving me tough ones 😭 I think most games I've played have done villains/antagonists really well, so there's been some likable aspect to them. But from a gameplay perspective it's Doomfist and Genji from Overwatch. //Edit: wait I just remembered Corypheus, the lamest villain anyone could think of. How can someone who has a dragon be so.. boring?

- I spend at least 40% of every Mass Effect game crying

Play Any Instruments: I have rudimentary guitar and ukulele skills that don’t improve because I only pick my instruments up once every few months, play for like 3 weeks, then put them down for another few months and forget almost everything and lose my finger callouses. I can also play like 3 very simple songs on piano.

Eye Color: Mostly green, sometimes grey depending on the lighting. I feel like when I was a child, they were more dynamic. People told me they could see them change color sometimes? I never saw it, but reliable sources have told me it’s happened. That makes me sound like a Mary Sue, tho, so we’ll just say green.

Languages you speak: English. I can understand SOME French, but not enough to speak it. I need to start practicing on Duolingo again.

Random Fact: All ten of my fingers are double jointed in at least one joint, sometimes more than one. I have little racoon hands. I can pop my thumbs out of their sockets very easily and it doesn’t cause me pain.

Tales from Grudgewill - Love of Our Lord  Chapter 1

For some time now... i was thinking that maybe i should send my newest piece  here. “Love of Our Lord”. Its basically a story about Lord Valnin (Not Uy-Mal Dzerma but Trildyn, because its alternate universe) dealing with his most recent problems like diplomacy, plague or love. The universe ive created is called “Grudgewill”, a fantasy universe based on Elder Scrolls, WarCraft, Dragon Age and perhaps a little on Warhammer Fantasy. I will send details about it later, but for now.. heres this little FanFiction ive made. This is just first chapter, i have second ready and im working on the third one, its going to be a long way. And i want to thank @avengercommander and @witharsenicsauce for inspiring me to do this, for helping me with writing and also for being very good friends, i cannot thank them enough for either. Anyway, i hope you will like it. ;)

Note : Almost all of the Valnin's lovers are characters taken from other games, most importantly Mass Effect : Andromeda and XCOM 2 : War of The Chosen, you can Google them, so you will know how they at least look like, for the Trio of Masters, Google up XCOM 2 Chosen. Chapter I : First Things First

Lord Valnin was in difficult situation right now. He had no idea what to do first. The two other rulers of Icestand required his help with the plague in their regions, half of his army was demoralized because of this undead menace that was coming from the South, and there was also this most difficult choice, he would have to make... to choose one of his loyal companions, who would share their life with him until the very end of all things, despite the sad fact most of them will not live as long as Valnin. The Lord dropped into his  chair, thinking about what to do, but all he wanted, was peace and quiet for at least a day or two. His blood red eyes focused on the rise of sun, its beams already touching Valnin's light blue skin. "Sometimes... I wish I didn't accept Watcher's offer. It surely would be easier than having to rule a kingdom" He said quietly to himself, so no one would hear him. As he continued to watch the dawn, his mind came with an idea after a minute. "First things first, I have to deal with this little love problem. After all, it's the closest problem I have here" He told himself quietly again. But then he frowned a little, as he was thinking about who to take. He couldn't think of who to choose. After all, he loved them all equally. He knew that having six lovers would be a bit crazy, but after all, no one was stopping him from doing so, unless one of them would disagree. "Hmm... It is an insane idea, Valnin, but you know you just cannot choose between them, you would then feel bad for the rest" He said with a bit of a louder tone this time. He then realized it, and stayed quiet for at least ten seconds, hoping that no one heard has him. Silence. He sighed a sigh of relief. He then felt odd, as he realized that he was pretty paranoid about all this. "Being a ruler will kill you one day, Trildyn" He told himself again in quiet tone.

It was a normal day in Third Kindgom of Icestand. Valnin's experts, soldiers and servants were doing their standard routines, and all the work he had was tons of paperwork again. It wasn't really easy for his mental health, since he had a lot of problems of his own, and yet, he still had to deal with things in his own kingdom, in kingdoms of his co-rulers  and also with things from other provinces and most of all, the Emerald Empire. It surely wasn't boring but more like irritating. Doing all the same things all over again despite the fact they should've been done already can be really mind-bothering. It took almost three quarters of the day to get all the formal things done. The Lord was sitting in his throne, his palm on his left cheek, enjoying the peace he finally got for the rest of the day. He closed his eyes for a moment, thinking about what he should do now that everyday's work has been done. His thoughts were interrupted by a voice of his runner who just got here "Your lordship, i hate to interrupt you, but Lord Arput II and Lord Voltor-Kal requested your presence in three days in Second Kingdom's capital". Valnin's face then shaped into annoyed expression, he sighed "Very well, tell them i'll be there, my servant". The runner bowed, and was on his way again. The Lord shifted in his throne again as he wanted to continue to think, but he couldn't. Something was keeping him from it. He got up, straightening his long black hair and then he thought about that he could visit one of his companions. But who? That was the question...

Captain of the Royal Security, Jaal Ama Darav, was just preparing to get out of his armor and head to his quarters, when suddenly someone knocked on the door. "Stars, what is it now?" He said under his breath. He cleared his throat and said just loudly enough so the person behind the door could hear him "Come in". He then checked his desk if he didn't forget anything while he heard the door open "I sincerely hope this is important. I had a long day, and I want to-" He stopped in the mid of his talk when he looked at the person who just came in. It was Lord Valnin, kindly smiling, his red eyes barely recognizable in the dim lights. "Oh, my Lord, I apologize, I didn't know that it was you" Jaal said with concerned voice. The Lord continued to smile, then he calmly said "Don't be so worried, Jaal. I just wanted to check up on you, my dearest Captain". The Angaran man blushed slightly, making his pink-white cheeks a little bit blue even though it couldn't really be seen in the dark ambience of his large office. "So how was your day, Jaal?" The Lord asked. The Captain slightly hesitated to tell him his honest thoughts, but in the end, he knew that there was something between him and Valnin, at least he felt that way and also the fact that Angara are more open with their feelings than most races made him say it, starting with a sigh "I... had a difficult day, my Lord. The new recruits we've got from the Empire? It is very difficult to work with them. If I would call them uneducated roekaar, it would be an understatement". Valnin felt that Jaal was feeling frustrated, but he couldn't help himself but to ask "Excuse me, but... uneducated what?". Jaal looked at Valnin with his blue almost cat-like eyes "Roekaar. It means stubborn people in free translation". Valnin nodded his head in understanding. "Well, you know what they say, you cannot trust n'wahs, the outlanders" Valnin said. The Captain just slowly nodded in agreement "Indeed, m'lord". Then there was a moment of silence between them, as they couldn't find subject to talk about. The silence has been broken when Jaal asked his Lord "Lord Valnin... I know this might be an inappropriate question, but is there-" He stopped, as he started to hesitate again. He just couldn't straight ask his own Lord if he cares about him as his lover. Valnin raises a brow "Yes?". Jaal looked at him for a second, then nervously looked away as the words were stuck in his throat. The Lord slowly came to him, putting his bare blue hand on Jaal's wide shoulder and while he was looking into his eyes, he said "Jaal, if there is anything on your heart, just tell me. I know it is kind of difficult to talk like that in front of your own ruler, but in the end, we are all just living beings". His words sounded so powerful when he was so close, almost like it was some kind of curse. The Angaran's eyes met with Lord's, returning him the confidence he needed to say it. "I just feel like there is something between us, my Lord. You gave me a few hints in the past, but I didn't think much of it. And recently, you were giving me lots of those odd looks and hints, it almost felt you like me, but in a way of a lover". As Valnin was processing what Jaal said, he just smiled "Tell me then, do you feel something towards me, my loyal subject?". And again, the Captain didn't have a slightest idea of what to say. The eye contact was still going, though. Nervous glare meeting the calm one. Jaal's imagination was going wild of what could happen in next few moments if he would be completely honest with him, alas his Angaran nature wasn't making it easy for him, he couldn't hold it anymore. "My lord... you are the most interesting and also most odd being I have ever known" he said in nervous but still voice as Valnin was smiling at him with his one brow slightly up. "You are an inspiration for me. For your men. For your whole kingdom" He continued with less and less nervousness in his voice. "I also find your race very fascinating. The wonderful scent of your hair. Your smooth blue skin. Your intriguing eyes, they can be both intimidating and pleasant to look at. They are like glittering..." He stopped as he was thinking for few seconds. "...I believe humans call it rubies" He said with sincere smile which revealed his almost-white teeth. The Lord was pleasantly surprised by all those words, his face bright with expression of smile so large, that it almost looked like his mouth was going to rip. "Oh, dearest Jaal, you have no idea how much i am flattered right now. I have to admit, you are very good with words, Captain" Valnin said with that never-ceasing smile. Jaal blushed slightly again, and gave him a warm smile back "Not as good as you are when it comes to politics, your Lordship". They shared their smiles once again, but then Jaal kindly asked "So how is it really, my Lord? Do you feel the same towards me as i do towards you?". The Lord went for it, and kissed Jaal ever so softly on his right cheek which left the Angaran man just standing there wide-eyed. "There's your answer, my dearest Jaal" Valnin said quietly, but loudly enough so Jaal would hear him. The Captain could not find any words to react with. "Good night, Jaal" The Lord said, and before Jaal could wish him back, he was gone. "... Good night, taoshay" Jaal said to himself even though he wanted his Lord to hear it, but who knows, maybe he did, elves have very good ears after all.

Also am not sure about Notepad, I think I've seen it pop up on this one but didn't realize that Win11 got rid of WordPad. I'm not surprised, honestly. @shannon-foraker Hi and thank you so much for replying, I appreciate it so much. This has been the weirdest computer issue I've ever had in my 20 some odd years (some of them very odd 😉) of having computers.

I'll try to keep this short because it's a lot. Update: I did not keep this short, sorry. But I tried. 😉 I just wanted to see if there's anything in here that maybe a tech-savvy person has heard of before? Never know what might be a clue.

In Oct, 2023, my Win 10 computer blue screened after 5 years of being rock solid, able to play Halo and other Steam games, could use Vegas to make vids and GIFs, had Word 2003 for writing. I eventually reset it because the BSODs got more and more frequent and that solved the BSODs but caused me to lose the Game Bar that's made into Win10 so I could no longer capture games like before. I could still launch Halo but not other games like Mass Effect: Andromeda that uses the EA launcher. Vegas would not launch. After researching and trying useless fixes, I eventually figured it was just its age and would need to be replaced. We were right at prime Black Friday sales times so that's what I did.

Also in Oct, 2023, though, my dad's less than a year old Win 11 computer ALSO began blue screening for no discernible reason. It was not networked with my Win10 computer, though they share a router. Mine was Ethernet, his Wifi. I scanned them both with everything I could, ruling out malware or viruses. They never share files, USB sticks, anything. Both are Dell, mine an XPS, his an Inspiron. I reset his, fully updated everything, but the BSODs continued a few days later, though for different reasons than before. This remains unsolved. His will work for a few hours, then BSOD. As that he's a very casual user, that's sustainable for him for now (he wants me to focus on fixing my new computer, which I use a lot more than he does his).

The new computer arrived for Christmas. It blue screened after being on for a few hours. I cried like a baby. I feel cursed, honestly. In the roughly a month since then (very roughly indeed), I've reset it 3 times, I've fully updated both Windows and Dell, which caused it to BSOD 8 times in an hour. I reset after that and did NOT update anything, pausing Windows updates which I've now learned doesn't actually pause the updates since this is the Home edition.

A few weeks ago, Dell issued an emergency BIOS update, along with fresh Nvidia and Intel driver updates. Installing those calmed the BSODs but didn't stop them entirely until I realized that using the Chrome broswer was causing Nvidia to lockup. Stopped using Chrome. Can't use Google docs anymore because that froze Firefox (and Nvidia began wailing like a banshee, I'm not afraid to say that I'm literally afraid of this computer nowadays, I would not be shocked if it just exploded in my face one day).

Dell's customer service advice is "apply all updates and if that fails, reset Windows" despite the fact I've done all of that A LOT. The most help I've actually found is from a Dell forum where there are literally dozens of reports of issues like mine. Changing Nvidia's power performance to maximum has helped the issue where the computer would be sitting idle, nothing running, and Nvidia would come on and attempt to make the PC achieve orbit. My God, was that fun to experience. /s

Dell insists there's nothing wrong with the computer and I'm beyond the time period where I could've returned it. So this little ticking time bomb is all mine for however long it has.

Interesting tidbits: Dell no longer sells this particular configuration of XPS. Windows 12 is about to launch in June 2024, not even 3 years after Win11's launch. That seems super soon to me, kinda like the ol' Win8 disaster but with them trying not to SAY it's a disaster. But I could just be projecting conspiracy theories nowadays. It comes from feeling like your PC is just going to freakin' blow your face off one day, I think. 👀

Answering your questions: I've considered putting my Win10 computer back up in place of this one even though it's hampered by a lot of issues. At least I can go back to playing Halo, which I miss tremendously. It irks me, though, to just mothball a brand new computer that was not cheap and was given to me by my dad. It makes me so sad because he wanted me to get something super awesome for gaming and vidding. He's always bragging about his "gamer daughter," lol, and this computer should've been a powerful rig: 64GBs RAM, i-9 chip, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 and other stuff that's escaping me at the moment, lol. The couple of times I did get to play Halo on it, my gracious, it looks STUNNING. Played like a dream, every blade of grass visible, just gorgeous.

Then it blue screened. 😑

I've heard of both Linux and Ubuntu but haven't ever seen them in person or know how to work with them. I'm not sure if Steam, Vegas and Word would work with them or if there are some sort of equivalent programs that would? I just looked and there are some games on Steam that will work on Linux.

Honestly, I just want this computer to work, like it's supposed to. I'm just not sure how to get it there. Or maybe there's no way that I can.

PS - Several other people with this issue had Dell send them new parts, one at a time, until they finally completely rebuilt the PC. The BSOD and freezing continued. I really don't think this is a hardware issue, it feels like a driver/software incompatibility instead but I dunno. I'm not tech-savvy at all, I've just done a ton of research while feeling like I'm surfing on a nuclear missile.

At least I was able to write all of this without the Nvidia light (visible through the vent) coming on. That looked so cool at first, now I just freeze in fear when it comes on, waiting to see if we're going to BSOD, freeze or if it's just going to growl loudly at me. Or try to achieve orbit. That was so lousy, I don't want to do that again. 😭

Okay, apparently my Fire tablet and PC are not syncing together, which resulted in me making a high-pitched pterodactyl noise a little while ago when I thought EVERYTHING I HAD WRITTEN IN MY EMAIL DRAFT YESTERDAY HAD DISAPPEARED.

Thankfully, it's still there on my tablet so I emailed it to myself and now I can see it on the PC but DANG is this a clunky, slow and painful way to try to do this. I have a SYSTEM when it comes to writing, frens. Anything messing with MY SYSTEM makes me feel a bit

Can't use Google docs as my computer already proved. I don't want anything I have to install on the computer *points to fears of returning to BSoD City* but I want something that I can somehow save at the same time. I dunno. I was hoping to get this in really good shape today and instead I'm stuck where I left off and feeling like I'm trying to excavate a hole the size of Mt. Everest with a teaspoon.

I thought about writing in a Tumblr draft or in AO3 itself but either of those has their own perils (Tumblr in accidentally POSTING IT and AO3 warns not to keep your only copy there). Maybe writing in AO3 and email it back to myself when I'm done for the day/writing session?

I just want to be able to use my computer like a COMPUTER again and not have to be so cautious and careful with everything. This is honestly stupid stressful. UGH.

Update: I'm going to try writing in AO3 for now and saving as a draft/emailing that back to myself. It's better than nothing and feels a little more familiar since I usually do my final editing in AO3 since I can often catch errors in AO3's preview that I missed in Word for some reason.

He wrote Sera, Aveline, and Carver, as well as the Leliana’s Song DLC. he also co-wrote A Paragon of Her Kind (Bhelen/Harrowmont, the Deep Roads, the Warden’s search for Branka and the anvil of the Void). on Mass Effect: Andromeda he wrote Liam Kosta, in the MET Jacob Taylor (afaik). here’s his full entry on the DA Wiki for reference. tl;dr it can be said there are some issues with his writing, of such things as the writing of women, WLW, race, neurodivergence (Sera). if you search Tumblr or Google you should be able to find some posts on/discussions re: these things, I shan’t get into it here.

hi! sorry to bother you! i sent you a message a few days but am not sure it went through 😭i was just wondering if it was possible to achieve 'academy ratio'/1.37:1 in reshade? i googled around and some say to use/layer the border.fx, some say aspectratio.fx (although i tried playing around with that in 4.3 and nothing seemed to visibly change my screen), etc. i'm hopeless. 😔

I haven’t played with the new aspect ratio shader, but back in the day we used to regularly use the border shader to set up different aspect ratios, and even the vignette shader could be used to do similar. It’s been a while since I used either of them (we’re talking back in the 0.18 days of ReShade, and earlier with the vignette shader in SweetFX), so I can’t remember off-hand how they are supposed to work, but they should be applying a black border or black bars over the image – you’ll need to play with the various values to make sure it looks how you want.

HOWEVER, there is a much more reliable and sexy way of creating any aspect ratio you want without ReShade, and it’s what I use whenever I’m able. I’m sure you’ve seen me talk about SRWE before? It stands for Simple Runtime Window Editor, and it’s a small, lightweight, and free program that lets you change the size and shape of the game window to whatever you want. It doesn’t work with all games, but it does work flawlessly with The Sims 4 (presumably that’s what you’re asking about?).

I wrote an in-depth tutorial some time ago about how to use it (the tutorial is for Mass Effect: Andromeda but it works exactly the same in TS4 and almost every other game I’ve used it with). The tutorial covers a lot about how to use it for hotsampling, which means taking far larger screenshots than normal, but even if you’re not interested in doing that it’s ridiculously easy to use to run the game in whatever aspect ratio you want.

You’ll also probably want a link to this bad boy: aspect ratio calculator. It’ll let you work out the correct pixel dimensions for any aspect ratio you want. I’d let you have a copy of my AR.txt file I keep permanently open in Notepad++ but 1.37:1 is just about the only AR I don’t have noted down (I have 4:3, which is near as damn it, but is more accurately 1.33:1).

If you’re definitely not interested in using SRWE, let me know and next time I’m at my computer properly I’ll take a look at those shaders and see if I can work out the correct settings for you. But I definitely recommend taking a look at SRWE because it makes switching aspect ratios the quickest and simplest thing in the world.

Dream Job: Honestly, my current job. I am a Firemen. It was a hard ass journey to get here... but I am loving it. ( I just made LT too at 27! ^^;)

When did you create your account: Well this account is maybe only a month old. My old account I had since I started playing Dragon Age Inquisition... so like 2014. I left that account due to harassment. >_>

What do you post about: Id say about 90% Gaming related content.... then the other 10% is kinda just mood stuff, lol.

What made you get an account: Gaming content really. I found a lot of the stuff I was liking on Pinterest was linking me over to Tumblr

When did your blog reach its peak: lol... well my old one did really well when Dragon Age Inquisition came out... after that it kinda mellowed out. This one is a baby, so it hasn’t done much. Plus, I have been more into the Fallout Fandom on here. 

Do you get asks on a daily basis: No ^^; Though I am pretty new to this fandom. it took me a long time to get outta my shell with the last fandom too... haha

Why did you choose your URL: Well this is a kinda deep story. I was pregnant when I was 22, with a set of twins. I lost them at 26 weeks. When we got pregnant again, this time with my son, we called him “Our little Lion” because he was a fighter. My son’s first name is Rory, which means Red King... so we started calling him Red Lion. my gamer tag is named in a similar fashion.
