i'm so glad you guys like this costume! it is one of my favorites. but I put my absurd pumpkin pants on one leg at a time just like everyone else.

anyway, here are some construction/project notes/wip photos in case you don't have 50 minutes to spare for the full video about making it!

inspo wise, The First Book of Fashion: The Book of Clothes of Matthaeus and Veit Konrad Schwarz of Augsburg [this is an affiliate link] served as the major influence for this. the book is basically documentation of what this man and his son wore to major events in his life over a period of decades. he was getting ootd painted before it was cool.

the base pattern for the pantlegs came from another pair of ridiculous pants I made a few months earlier.

the paned portion is made from homemade piping sewn to strips of jacquard that are backed with twill tape to prevent fraying.

I made so much fucking piping for this oh my god. each of these strips was 20"+ long, both sides have piping, and these are the panes for ONE LEG. there were also sleeves. we're talking like 60+ yards of piping.

perhaps unsurprisingly, these strips were too thick to gather. so instead I had to overlap them to create the shaping over the leg. it looks OK but isn't ideal.

after this was done, velvet ribbon was sewn over the marked point to hold them in place.

oh! I also sewed a layer of mesh over the orange base fabric to dull it somewhat and provide contrast before sewing on the bands.

the upper portion of the pants was made from even strips of velvet and jacquard seamed together and fitted over a cotton base. the appliques were added to cover the fact the stripes meet at an angle at the side seam, and I sewed on orange sequins because I like sequins.

the happiness I felt when this fit was immense, I must say.

the bodice is two pieces, one for the front, one for the back. it laces up the sides with hand sewn eyelets. it wasn't very flattering as just an expanse of orange of the chest, so I added appliques to the front and back, too.

the black detailing around the top edge is made from varying widths of velvet ribbon.

the sleeves have similar elements of everything shown above--a paned upper portion, velvet ribbon trim, and a bit of lace at the cuffs.

unlike most of my projects the sleeves have no lining forcing the shaping, what you see beneath/between the panes is the chemise worn beneath this. it's made from the mesh used as an overlay on the pants with a jacquard/velvet ribbon collar which you can see peaking out above the neckline of the bodice.

oh! and then there is the pumpkin hat! there is a video on patreon about making this somewhere, I think.

and it's just that easy to live out your renaissance pumpkin prince/ess dreams!

The Cambiones [Christian demonology; medieval European mythology]:

A very common theme throughout mythology and religion that connects stories about mythical creatures of many, if not all, civilizations: where magical monsters and supernatural beings exist, there are stories about people having sex with them.

In some stories, this union between the natural and the unnatural results in a child. There are many medieval European stories about children with one human parent and one fey parent. These stories might have originated as a way to explain physical abnormalities or rare traits in infants, such as an unusual appetite or deformities. For example, Matthaeus Parisiensis (a 13th century English historian) describes a Welsh boy who supposedly was the offspring of a human parent and an Incuba, which is a supernatural creature. The boy had already grown a full set of teeth by the time he was 6 months old, and became weirdly tall when he was a teenager. Because of this, he was classified as a ‘Gigantulus’. Another story tells of a boy named Tydorel, whose fey parentage caused him to be unable to sleep.

This all brings us to the Cambiones (singular: Cambion): the offspring of a human parent and a demon. These creatures resemble human infants but with a monstrous appearance. In addition, they weigh much more than a regular child. One often-cited story (cited by Morasch, 1725, among others) from Galicia (Spain) tells of a female beggar who struggled to cross a river with her child. A rider on horseback saw her and offered to carry her baby across the water, but the horse collapsed under its weight. She then admitted that the baby was not her child, but a Cambion devil which had promised her that as long as she carried it around, people would not refuse to give her alms and money.

In modern pop culture, Cambiones are usually portrayed as classical devils: human-like creatures with horns, red skin and a tail. They also usually grow up like regular people rather than remaining in the form of an infant, and are often the result of a forbidden love between a mortal and some kind of fiend. But looking at older mentions of this creature, the nature of the Cambion actually differs a lot between stories and authors, and it is not always the child of a human and a demon:

According to the account of William of Auvergne, dating from the 13th century, Cambiones are demonic illusions resembling babies who have been left in a human household to replace a kidnapped human infant. The word comes from ‘cambiti’, meaning ‘[those who] have been exchanged’. They are predominantly male, cry much more than a normal child, and possess a voracious appetite, to the point where 4 maids are unable to produce enough milk to satisfy a single Cambion. They remain with their human family for years before mysteriously disappearing.

Nicolaus van Jauer, in his 1405 Tractatus de Superstitionibus, claims that Cambiones are in fact not magical illusions, but real living demons. In his version as well, these creatures had been left in human households by the devil.

Still later, in the 1486 Malleus Maleficarum, Heinrich Kramer posits that there are three kinds of Cambiones: the first type is the offspring of a human man and a Succubus demon. The second kind is created by the devil from a bit of semen he collected from a sleeping human man. And then the third kind is not actually a child, but rather a mature demon who magically takes the form of a mortal infant. All three types of Cambiones distinguish themselves from normal babies by their enormous appetite, and the fact that they never grow, no matter how old they are.

Finally, I want to mention Collin de Plancy’s Dictionnaire Infernal, which claims that a Cambion is actually the offspring of two demons: a male Incubus and a female Succubus. They retain most of the traits that the other versions had, though: they eat much more than normal infants and are much heavier. De Plancy recites a story about a Cambion which screamed whenever someone touched him, and laughed when something bad happened nearby. In this version, they only live for seven years.

суровое сицилийское детство или некоторые мои хэдканоны о детстве Хаято Гокудеры (длиннопост)

начнём с (неожиданно) начала, а именно с рождения и имени. "Гокудера" появился раньше "Хаято", но раньше всего этого был "Маттео Альери"

Хаято родился в 1992 г. в самом сердце мафии - на Сицилии. его отцом был Винченцо Альери, не существующий в реальности младший брат Пьетро Альери.

конкретно этот хэдканон об идентификации отца Хаято и Бьянки принадлежит не мне, а Ashamane. я подглядела его из её замечальной работы "Тот парень из Италии"

как один из сторонников-подчинённых Крёстных отцов Тото Риина и Бернардо Провенцано Пьетро Альери был одной из очень влиятельных фигур в сицилийской мафии, "Коза Ностра". её история до сих пор обладает множеством неточностей, однако в общих чертах она более чем известна. Пьетро Альери принял (и даже за решёткой сейчас всё ещё играет) в её создании заметное участие, но нам относительно его личности для бэкграунда Хаято надо знать две вещи: 1) он получил классическое образование, учился греческому, латыни, философии, истории и литературе, в связи с чем получил прозвище "Маленький джентльмен"; 2) он религиозный католик, после ареста в 1997 г. в тюрьме погрузился в изучение теологии.

имя "Маттео" происходит от латинского Matthaeus, что значит "дар Бога", и именно дядя Пьетро дал Хаято такое имя. по моим представлениям, у несуществующего Винченцо долго не получалось завести детей, после нескольких лет лечения у него родилась Бьянки, но девочка в cosca (мафиозном сицилийском клане) не наследница. поэтому, когда стало известно об интрижке его младшего брата с полукровкой-пианисткой, что в патриархальных кругах "Коза Ностра" двойное попрание традиционных ценностей: измена супруге, да ещё и с любовницей смешанных кровей - Пьетро разозлился не так сильно, как этого требовал кодекс чести. в конце концов, от этой связи появился долгожданный наследник - самый настоящий "подарок Бога".

через какое-то время после побега из дома Маттео подробнее разузнал о матери и решил взять её фамилию. прошло ещё несколько месяцев прежде чем он узнал (от людей, так или иначе знавших Лавину, и да, он целенаправленно их искал, чтобы поговорить о ней), что она дала ему имя Хаято. так Маттео Альери сначала стал Маттео Гокудера, а потом Хаято Гокудера.

имя "Хаято" записывается 隼人 . первый иероглиф, 隼 значит 'сокол (сапсан)', а также 'сокол' в переносном значении 'храбрец, герой'. второй же, 人 значит 'человек'.

Сицилия - место, где католичество занимает большое место в жизни людей обычных, равно как и людей из мафии: христианская символика применяется в их собственных ритуалах, например, официальное вступление в ряды "Коза Ностра" проходит в виде обряда "крещения", к тому же над иконами святых. да и широко известное понятие "Крёстный отец" как бы говорит само за себя.

в жизни Хаято вера тоже присутствовала, только вот то, в каком качестве и сколько, менялось с годами. при рождении, конечно же, его сразу крестили. в детстве под влиянием дяди он был довольно религиозен (насколько вообще маленькие дети могут быть религиозны), однако, несмотря на все усилия Пьетро, Хаято отшёл от Бога. первые сомнения появились после ареста дяди и случившейся почти одновременно с этим смерти Лавины. после побега из дома представления посыпались окончательно. долгие годы из церкви он извлекал только утилитарную выгоду: использовал соборы и церкви в качестве крова; обращался в бесплатные столовые, которые открывали для малоимущих; получал благотворительную одежду; ходил в открытые при церквях бесплатные публичные библиотеки.

думаю, в сознательном возрасте, лет в 25, перед Хаято даже не будет стоять вопрос, а существует ли Бог, потому что к атеизму он будет идти небольшими такими постепенными шагами, что к этому возрасту отсутствие всесильного божества будет казаться естественным, а не наоборот, как было когда-то. однако поход в церковь будет оставлять у него горько-сладкое ностальгическое ощущение глубоко в душе - почти как в детстве.

а ведь ещё есть японское синто. в общем, отношения Хаято с верой запутанные.

в завершение блока о религии следующий хэдканон: Шамал - знакомый Пьетро Альери, он был выбран им в качестве будущего "крёстного отца" племянника по ряду политических причин. т.е. именно Шамал бы проводил ритуал "крещения" в "Коза Ностра" для Хаято, когда он бы стал старше. по этой причине он и трениро��ал Хаято в детстве, а также приглядывал за ним после побега из дома.

Хаято был эмоциальным ребёнком, но стоицизм, романтизируемый окружением, в котором он рос, и равнодушная жестокость улиц, куда он попал после побега, сформировали его способ проживать множество своих эмоций.

в треугольнике "бей-беги-замри" Хаято изначально больше склонен ко второй реакции (беги), что и демонстрирует вся ситуация с побегом из дома. однако с годами он приучился бить первым, потому что те, кто убегает от проблем, в "Коза Ностра", увы, в итоге финишируют в гроб. насилие, провокация, крик - первые реакции на любую ситуацию, которые Хаято довёл до рефлекса. потому что либо так, либо - реже - бежать, иначе не выжить.

дети - жестокие существа. дети на улицах - более жестоки в разы. особенно если ты отличаешься от остальных не просто какой-то чертой лица, а чертой лица, характерной для другого народа - обыкновенный бытовой расизм из невежества. и Хаято с примесью 1/4 восточной крови, с восточным именем, конечно, дразнили "китаёзой" (ОСУЖДАЮ).

ещё, как я думаю, его дразнили за волосы: по мнению малолетних задир и рецедивистов, они были стрёмного цвета, слишком "китаёзные" (дети порой нелогичны). однажды, во время одной уличной драки Хаято схватили за волосы и обкромсали их складным ножом :)) д - дети, д - доброта.

Хаято это никак особо не задело. он злился, был раздражён и обижен, но в те годы с 7 до 14 лет он был всё время в таком состоянии, и никак не отделял для себя одни нападки от других.

годы, когда он на половину жил на улице, повлияли на его здоровье.

на самом деле, ничего критичного не было, он не голодал, но определённые трудности с питанием у него были. это _не_ привело к ментальным проблемам (рпп) или серьёзному вреду физическому здоровью, но отголоски остались. из-за недоедания в детстве Хаято всегда был и будет не таким высоким и крупным, как другие его родственники (в будущем едва ли перерастёт Бьянки, и из хранителей 10 поколения ниже его будет только Хром), также у него развилась анемия и упало зрение.

до приезда в Намимори Хаято никогда не ходил в школу и практически не общался со сверстниками в мирном ключе.

влияние его дяди заложило прочный фундамент для его образования, но всё же Хаято было не так и много лет, когда он сбежал, и потому почти всё образование, которое он получил до встречи с Тсуной, было получено им по собственной инициативе. как я уже упоминала чуть выше, он ходил в бесплатные публичные библиотеки, в том числе церковные, посещал открытые уроки, чему-то его периодически, когда он врывался в его жизнь, учил Шамал. Хаято отказывался ходить в школу, потому что так его легко бы нашли и вернули к отцу, чего он категорически не хотел.

Хаято был очень любознательный, ему нравилось учится. однако ограниченный доступ к информации, порой её специфичность и полная бесконтрольность в выборе привели к тому, что он не только по энциклопедиям выучил основы химии, чтобы делать собственный динамит, освоил физику и математику в той степени, чтобы понимать, как правильно рассчитывать подрывную деятельность, но ещё и познакомился со всевозможной литературой сомнительного качества: книги про теории заговора, альтернативную историю, пришельцев, криптидов и прочее мракобесие. отсюда и его вера в мистику.

это не все хэдканоны о прошлом Хаято. во 2 части мои мысли насчёт того, как он начал курить, как он выбрал динамит в качестве основного оружия и как стал "Дымовой бомбой" :>
