Melissa Hat

- I think that Melissa would also be apart of the Gunners—specifically near Shauna as much as she can be.

- Grew up around violence in the commonwealth, I think she’d also have several brothers within the Gunner ranks who she basically looks up to

- Super intimidated by Shauna when she first saw her. She witnessed Shauna kill like 3 grown men who were hassling her and it just clicked something in her

- She definitely yearns for a suit of power armor every day. Idk why but she definitely seems like she’d want one BAD

- I think within the Gunner ranks she’d be less of a field ops girl and more of a repair girl who just fixes shit for them. The only reason she would go out on scouting or small raids is because Shauna is leading them

- Kind of follows Shauna around. The one time she doesn’t is when Shauna meets Jackie during scouting. Shauna wouldn’t come back to the base for over a week.

- When she does return, Melissa is superrrr pissed

- Some kind of confrontation would start from this i’m sure

Laura Lee

- I’m biased because I love Lottielee but I think Laura Lee would be one of Lottie’s disciples within the Children Of Atom

- Veryyy devoted to whatever Lottie says.. constantly leads little prayer groups while also making posters and notes to try to get people to worship atom

- I don’t know what else to really give her character other than she’s extremely devoted to Lottie.

- I think originally she would’ve grown up in a settlement that was just her family. Then, I think it would’ve been ransacked by raiders, killing her father. This would’ve sent her mother into a frenzy, which drove Laura Lee away from the settlement.

- Lottie would have found her near the edge of the Glowing Sea with barely any supplies or food. I think Laura Lee would be quick to accept help—mostly because Lottie is extremely charismatic when it comes to atom

- Definitely tells other followers of atom that same story of how Lottie ‘saved her’

- OR as a complete 180… you could translate her faith into the kind of loyalty that Brotherhood soldiers have to the BOS

- It kind of makes sense?? I could definitely see her hating all kinds of Ghouls.. wanting to protect technology from evil.. she means well but doesn’t execute it properly. If that makes sense

Misty Quigley

- Idk why but Misty is so hard for me to picture like WHERE she would be in the commonwealth. I have brainstormed a few things

- I definitely think she’d have something to do with science for sure.. which makes me want to put her in with the Institute

- If she were in the institute, I think she would be in the Bio Science division or Robotics, where they make the synths

- My reasoning for putting her in the institute is because she’s insanely smart and good at science.. but is also like.. not using her knowledge for good, really. I wouldn’t say the institute is really a good faction.. it’s not GREAT but it’s not like.. evil.. i guess. I feel like she fits there

- I also think she’d nerd out over making synths, like talking in great detail about every little thing they do and how amazing they are

- Also.. the institute does kidnap people. They have that in common… so it’s basically perfect

- I also think Akilah would be in the institute.. specifically in the Bio Science division because of their ability to create synthetic animals like the gorillas. I think she’d take care of a bunch of synthetic animals

- Or, I can see her in working on a farm with her family. I think in S2 she mentioned her sisters or brothers.. and I can picture her living on a family ranch of sorts that gets by with their crops and a couple of brahmin

- I could see her working within a settlement run by the Minutemen too!! I think she’d fit in very well with their ideals

Mari Ibarra

- She’s the one I’m having the most trouble with. Like, I genuinely don’t really know where she’d fit in this universe

- She kinda gives me BOS Knight vibes?? Like they’re all very opinionated and blunt like how she is. The Knights especially will outright insult you based on your companion.. it reminds me of Mari

- I also think she’d be BOS because Shauna definitely hates them—and I don’t know how they’d meet yet, but Mari would definitely ragebait Shauna subconsciously. Jackie would have to hold her back

Travis and Javi Martinez

- I think Travis would be a caravan guard that protects Van’s traveling business. Javi obviously tags along—collecting trinkets and pre-war toys so he can build stuff

- Or, I think Travis would be apart of the Minutemen. He’d teach Javi how to use a gun after their father is killed by raiders

- They’d never be separate—always sleeping in the same room so that Travis can make sure Javi is okay

- Fallout Travis is definitely a lot like season 1 Travis. Very standoff-ish. Very wary of anyone and everyone.

- In a Minutemen sense.. I think Javi would really want to be more involved with helping out—which Travis would immediately shut down

- Or… I could also see Travis also being apart of the BOS. With Javi being a squire. Travis could be a Knight like Mari in the same squad. I think they’d get along in a familial sense.

Thoughts on Daredevil: Born Again episode 5 "With Interest"

With the whole mini series trend taking the television  world by storm, I started watching Born Again knowing it would only have so many episodes to make the mark it needed to. The insane amount of potential kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the weeks; as "Sic Semper Systema" wrapped up, I was slightly more confident that Born Again would finish strong... then came "With Interest".

I'll be honest, at first, I was put off by it. I hated it. I do admit, episode 5 IS a quality episode, it just doesn't mesh with the rest of the series! While it was admittedly entertaining, it was also a MAJOR tone shift too jarring to swallow. Everything seemed so much more lighthearted than what had been set up previously, and Yusuf Khan didn't help the cause. On a surface level, yeah, his cameo was cute! I loved seeing him and Matt interact, however, as a serious DD fan, it just... didn't work. Not only did the cameo feel <super> out of place, but the entire episode had the vibe of a totally different show!

I kept waiting for something to change before the credits rolled, waiting for something to switch and clue us back into the gritty, haunting world of Daredevil we all know and love, but it never happened.

By the end, Mom and I shared the same sentiment: what the hell was that? Episode 4 was so good, where did that momentum go?

Then, later, a friend and I watched the episode together, and his opinion helped turn mine around.

My good friend Joe is just as big of a fan of Daredevil as I am, probably even more so! He started with the comics, and appreciates the live action adaptations for their strengths and weaknesses. As we watched the episode, it was clear from the get-go that Joe was having a great time! He thoroughly enjoyed "With Interest" not because it was an excellent addition to the overarching plot, but <because> it was its own, self-contained one-shot. Joe described his fondness for episode 5 with a memory from his childhood, visiting a local comics shop after a day of running errands with his dad. They didn't often have the chance to stop by, so when they did, it wasn't about keeping up with whatever epic saga was ongoing at the time! It was about whatever looked <cool>! THAT was the essence of the good ol' days of comic books, because you didn't need to read every chapter of every volume! You could just pick up an issue and immerse yourself in a world of showoff heroics vs everyday thugs or memorable villains (often wrapped up with a nice message or life lesson). 

This key difference reminded me of <another> comic book hero whose various adaptations, while polarizing, are equally worthy in their own rights. I'm talking, of course, about Superman. Specifically the Man of Steel film, and the Superman Returns film. Both are cherished movies, but for <very> different reasons! Man of Steel is a modern, more realistic take on Superman, quite literally washed-out and gritty in nature and picture. Superman Returns, however, is the epitome of the phrase "comic book adaptation"; it skillfully balances the exaggerated designs of the sacred texts with the high-stakes drama of fictional villains in a real life setting! From color palettes to stunts and dialogue, there's a theatrical vibe to every element.

I think the word I'm looking for is "romanticized". In just the same way as Man of Steel vs Superman Returns, "With Interest" is the romanticized perspective of Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock that we've never seen. The Netflix Daredevil world IS the dark and gritty portrayal we're used to, while I'd say the Ben Affleck film is the dramatic opposite. As all things do, they both have their positives and negatives, but at the end of the day, they represent an alternate facet of the character which can't be compared, only contrasted. 

Final thoughts? "With Interest" is okay. It doesn't necessarily fit the mold, but it certainly doesn't deserve any hate or negative reviews. <Especially> given what was learned after the fact. For context, I'm gonna paraphrase what I read about Born Again after the release of episode 5. (Note: this is NOT a firsthand account!! Just the internet findings of a very intrigued fan!)

The production of Born Again was heavily affected by the SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023. Originally, Born Again was handled by an entirely different team of people, written in an entirely different direction. It's said that the initial plan was to take the Daredevil world onto a more unique path, essentially having the Netflix cast, but with a totally clean slate. There were supposed to be few, if any ties to the Netflix universe. Even the genre was different! At some point, the crew in charge of the show was shuffled around. A new showrunner took the reins, even Kevin Feige stepped in. However, lots of things had already been filmed. Time was ticking down and there were few opportunities to make any major changes to the things they had. Long story short, after the big switch, the new Born Again team had to work with stuff left by the previous crew.

Surprisingly, though! It's said that "With Interest" was the <only> episode to go without any changes; basically, it IS an episode from an entirely different show! Given ALL of that, I'm willing to give it a pass on the extremely off-putting vibes. Still, it sucks that it mostly doesn't contribute to the rest of the series... but, I digress.

Solid 6/10.

Jack Posobiec, a far-right activist, podcaster, and early booster of the Pizzagate conspiracy theory, has been lucky at least twice. In April 2017, during the first Trump administration, he was granted White House press credentials while working for the Canadian conservative news outlet Rebel Media. At the time, this was news all on its own: Posobiec has associated with white nationalists and promoted a dangerous conspiracy theory that, among other things, ultimately resulted in a gunman shooting up a pizza parlor.

Posobiec didn’t last long in the briefing room, spending most of his time sparring with other reporters, lobbing softball questions, and delivering approving commentary from the White House lawn about President Donald Trump’s firing of then-FBI Director James Comey. He left Rebel Media the next month, after the outlet found he had plagiarized material from white supremacist Jason Kessler, and subsequently co-authored a book praising fascist leaders like Francisco Franco and Augusto Pinochet.

Nearly eight years after his stint in the White House, Posobiec, now a senior editor at Human Events, another far-right publication, was invited by newly appointed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to accompany him on his first overseas trip. Hegseth didn’t give any particular reason publicly why Posobiec had been invited, and in the end, he didn’t go—because he was instead accompanying Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to Ukraine, where Politico reported that he was present when Bessent greeted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It’s not just Posobiec: From the moment Trump returned to office, his second administration has prioritized giving access and status to an array of far-right influencers and news outlets, including figures with checkered pasts and thin or nonexistent journalistic credentials. In doing so, the administration has created a swell of flattering media coverage, a gauzy bubble around its every decision, no matter how destructive or incoherent. This new state media displays unquestioning loyalty, and its propaganda pipeline is speedier than ever, ensuring that every executive order or new move by the Department of Government Efficiency is greeted with rapturous pseudo-reporting the moment it’s announced. 

As part of this new order, the White House press briefing room is now chock-full of conservative podcasters, influencers, and representatives of right-wing media outlets. Nine days after Trump reassumed office, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt took to the podium for her first briefing to announce that the White House would encourage what she called “new media voices” to apply for press passes, including “independent journalists, podcasters, social media influencers, and content creators.”  “Starting today,” she added, “this seat in the front of the room, which is usually occupied by the press secretary staff, will be called the ‘new media’ seat.” To further drive the point home, for her first questions as press secretary, she called on reporters from Axios and Breitbart, which described as part of the new media landscape. (Breitbart was launched in 2007, Axios in 2017.) The Breitbart journalist, Matt Boyle, began his question by praising the Trump White House and Leavitt for creating this new access.

“For the most part, this new crop of people who have been given extremely good access are not journalists in the traditional sense,” says Margaret Sullivan, executive director of the Craig Newmark Center for Journalism Ethics and Security at Columbia University and a former public editor for the New York Times.

“They’re closer to propagandists than journalists,” Sullivan adds. “I don’t know if you could call it ‘coverage.’ It’s positive exposure for the Trump administration. They’ll be part of a cheering squad.” To contrast with the warm reception rolled out for Boyle, Leavitt also made it clear that the White House planned to have a combative relationship with what she called “legacy media” outlets that hadn’t provided fawning coverage of the president. “We know for a fact there have been lies that have been pushed by many legacy media outlets in this country about this president, about his family, and we will not accept that,” she said in the January 29 briefing, while addressing Associated Press journalist Zeke Miller. “We will call you out when we feel that your reporting is wrong or there is misinformation about this White House.” In a cutthroat example of retaliation, in mid-February, the AP was barred from briefings, news conferences, and events until it agrees use the term “Gulf of America,” the new name Trump has given to the Gulf of Mexico. As a global news outlet, the AP has chosen to continue to use the longstanding and internationally recognized name. On Friday, it launched a lawsuit over its exclusion that argued the press agency has a constitutional right to “choose their own words and not be retaliated against by the government.”

Leavitt, who is 27, has her own history of producing articles of questionable news value. She was previously paid by allies of Chinese businessman and convicted fraudster Guo Wengui to put her name on op-eds in right-wing American news outlets praising his work. Leavitt did not disclose that Guo allies paid her to write the stories, and at least two of the articles were removed by the outlet Townhall after Mother Jones reported on them. Leavitt, who previously served as Trump’s campaign spokesperson, also appeared in a Project 2025 training video unearthed by the investigative outlet ProPublica, despite having personally denied any links between the campaign and Project 2025.

Other figures in the reshaped White House briefing room include Natalie Winters, a correspondent for Steve Bannon’s War Room. Winters was also paid by Guo backers to write flattering stories about the Chinese businessman. (In response to our reporting, Winters falsely accused Mother Jones of being a “Beijing propaganda front” in an article for Headline USA, a right-wing site.) Mike Lindell Media Corp., owned by My Pillow founder and election fraud conspiracy theorist Mike Lindell, has not one, but two White House correspondents. The Daily Wire has sent Mary Margaret Olohan, author of a book about people who have, in the words of its subtitle, escaped “the gender ideology cult,” who has Instagrammed herself partying at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.  “We belong in the briefing room,” Olohan declared to other Daily Wire figures during a broadcast from the White House lawn. “We need to be bringing the American public these stories and sharing with them the truth that legacy media has no intention of ever sharing with them.” To date, Olohan’s work carrying out that mission has included tweeting screenshots of executive orders, a rapturous video of Trump walking into the room, and a photo of a list of accomplishments that Leavitt’s staff handed to reporters.  As an example of how the new media seats work, look to former ESPN host Sage Steele, who has become increasingly involved in right-wing media circles after settling a lawsuit against her ex-employer. She was in one of the seats February 5, when she asked a question about “men in women’s sports,” just hours, as the Wrap noted, before she stood behind Trump at at an event where he signed a transphobic executive order that purported to “keep men out of women’s sports.”  Another person given the seat for a day—clearly meant to be a place of honor for administration allies—was Chris Pavlovski, CEO of Rumble. Leavitt read a lengthy statement from the podium praising Rumble, which hosts a variety of conservative and far-right content, and reiterated Trump’s enthusiasm for the platform. Two days before Pavlovski made his appearance, the White House announced it was launching an official Rumble channel, which is packed with news-light, propaganda-heavy videos, including a recent one titled, “America’s Decline Is Over.”  [...] Even before Trump took office again, there were signs that far-right and conspiracist figures would be given special access to his presidency. On November 13, shortly after he won reelection, Trump ally and dirty-tricks specialist Roger Stone went on Alex Jones’ Infowars show to read a statement from the president-elect, announcing that Tulsi Gabbard would be nominated to serve as the director of national intelligence. Trump allowed Stone and Jones to scoop his own announcement, which he waited to post on his social media network Truth Social several minutes later.
