matt had only been home for about a minute when a pair of arms snaked around his waist.

he hung his jacket on a hook and spun around, smiling softly. “hey, i think that’s a new record. fastest hugs in the west.”

jessica had her hands hooked behind his back, and she was grinning at him. her short blonde hair curled around her jaw, softening her face. “howdy,” she mumbled, “i’ve been practicing, see how… quiet i was?”

he brushed his fingers through her hair, tucking it behind her ears and kissing her forehead. “you snuck up on me again.”

she had a blue band-aid with pale yellow stars on it on the bridge of her nose, covering a scar, and she wasn’t wearing any makeup. he loved her like this, soft, human, there.

“i see you found my sweatshirt,” he said wryly, pulling its navy blue hood over her head. she was wearing his pajama pants, too, and she was leaning pretty heavily on him.

“it may never have been missing,” she said, her grey eyes twinkling like starlight. “how was… uh, practice?”

“class was boring,” he sighed, catching her frown when she realized she’d gotten the place wrong. “but i’m glad there’s no practice today, because i’ve got big plans for us.”

“oh, yeah?” she asked, her fingers gently clutching the fabric of his sweater. “like… capital b, big?”

he grinned. “yep, i’ve got big plans. c’mere.”

matt walked her to the kitchen, letting her cling to his arm as much as she needed, then, smiling, stepped closer to her. he slipped his hand under the hem of the stolen sweatshirt and cupped her waist, chuckling when she shivered.

he leaned forward and pressed his lips against each of the scars on her face, then lifted her up to sit on the counter. “we’re making cookies.”

“we’re making cookies?”

“well, i’m making cookies, i think you’re just gonna sit there and look pretty. think you can handle that?”

her beam lit the whole apartment.

they chatted while matt mixed the dough, listening to jess’ music, and matt got distracted a couple of times just looking at her. she couldn’t look more different than the jess he’d seen at the lodge the year before.

she couldn’t look more different than the bleeding, terrifying jess he’d caught in the mines that night, either.

“you’re looking at me funny,” she murmured, sliding gingerly off of the counter and stepping close to him. she slipped her hands in the pockets of his levis, looking up at him with a smile that was equal parts mischievous and apprehensive. “why?”

matt offered her a small blob of cookie dough and gave it to her as she opened her mouth.

“i’m just happy,” he said softly, “happy we’re here.”

“i’m, uh, i’m glad you came to see me,” she whispered, “even though—” she broke off, pressing her eyes into her skull with the palms of her hands. jess had a hard time remembering things, talking, walking, even, after the mines. she was the strongest person he’d ever met.

“i think we both knew i’d come back to you,” matt said earnestly.

she tugged on the front of his cardigan and he leaned down, letting her kiss him slowly and clumsily. when she broke away, he kissed her forehead, holding her close and swaying to the soft music playing in their kitchen.

“thank you,” she whispered.

Foggy: Hey man do you ha- oh shit sorry do you have someone over?

Matt: No

Foggy: Why are you lying?

Matt: I'm not lying it's not someone it's jess

Foggy: Oh my God you slept with jess?Jess?!

Matt: No she feel into the Manhattan

Foggy: But its-

Matt: January yes and she has a mild case of hypothermia. Don't worry I already called Claire, she said to keep her warm and despite jess' insistence that * with finger quotes* "they'd grow back" we are not to cut off any limbs

"life or death situation, Matt," Jess claps her hands together from where she stands in front of Matt, who is sitting on the sofa. Emily stands beside her, her hands on her hips as she looks at Matt. "Who do you like more? Me, your dazzling, beautiful, amazing girlfriend- or Emily, your less dazzling girlfriend?"

Those words cause Emily to smack Jessica's side, the blonde huffing as she reaches to hold said side Emily had punched.

"We all know I'm the better option," Emily smiles as she fixes her turtleneck. "Come on Matt, don't be scared to admit it."

"Seriously, girls, this isnt-" Matt starts to try and stutter out, but he's cut off as Emily huffs and rolls her eyes. "Come on, everybody knows im your favorite." Jessica glares at her, as she reaches a hand over and tugs on a strand of Emily's hair. The latter squeals, reaching one of her own hands over to tug on Jessica's french braid which the blonde had laid over her shoulder. Meanwhile, matt just shifts the way he's sitting awkwardly on the sofa, looking between his two girlfriends. "Emily, Jessica, lets just-"

"Oh, matt, you promised to take us shopping when it hit 2," Jessica says as she looks down at her phones reen. Emily looks at the screen too, before she looks at Matt. He looks back, before his eyes flick over to Jessica as she starts walking to the front door, picking her blue bodywarmer up from the peg it's hanging on by the entrance. Emily follows along, almost like a cat trailing behind its owner as they walk around the home, picking her car keys up as she goes. She snakes her arm around Jessica's waist as the blonde opens the front door. The two girls pause as they look back at Matt.

"Get moving then, Matt!" Jessica encourages as she walks away from Emily, heading out into the driveway. Emily smiles at Matt, before following outside after Jessica, leaving the front door open.

Matt starts to get up from the sofa, running a hand over his face. Phew- atleast that was over. However, now he was gonna have to carry the shopping bags from the mall.

“Thank you for the food.” Matt said, his voice tired, his shoulders slumped.

Jessica just grunted an acceptance.

He wasn’t feeling all that hot just then. He’d taken quite the beating earlier that night and every inch of his body seemed to be hurting. It was a miracle his ribs weren’t broken.

Jessica hadn’t said a thing when he dragged himself to her place. She’d just tsked, then helped him out of his suit and bandaged him - even though he told her it wasn’t necessary.

He must’ve fallen asleep, because he woke up with the smell of Chinese food. When he made his way to her living room/office, she’d already set the table - or as much as she could.

They ate in silence, his body weary. Jessica was strangely contained, but she didn’t feel tense or anxious, more like… Pensive.

She finally cleared her throat. “Do you need anything else? Aspirin?”

He hurried to swallow his food. “No, I’m good.”

Matt was excellent as a matter of fact. This thing with Jess wasn’t exactly new, but it felt so different. She wasn’t like most people he knew, and he believed she felt the same.

It felt fragile, yet precious those moments they had when they could be together in silence.

He marveled at her every second they spent together.

“You’re good at taking care of me.” He teased with a grin.

She snorted as she chased a piece of chicken with her chopsticks. “Yeah, well… I love you, so I want you to be well.”

Matt felt his whole body seizing upon hearing her words. He held still, worried she’d bolt or take the words back. She’d never said them before.

And he knew she was sitting by him, still eating like nothing else was happening, but he could hear her heart in her chest, he could sense how her body was now tense.

“Well…” His voice was heavy, even as he tried to keep his cool. “I love you too.”

Jessica just nodded, but her body relaxed. They’d be fine.

Jessica Jones is the best thing to happen to Matt Murdock, change my mind.

Matt is going through hell from the start of the Defenders to the end of the Defenders. He lost all of his friends, and the woman he thought was the love of his life. He’s a mess, living with the guilt that comes with being the surviving, more stable half of an abusive relationship. He survived, just to see this woman rebirth into a psycho Zombie version of herself that he’s going to have to put down.

And yet, while Matt is at his lowest and most alone, Jessica Jones comes along and brings out a side of Matt we’ve really only heard about. This Matt is funny, and quick witted. He’s willing to team up and trust.

We see Matt smile more along side Jessica in the Defenders- genuine smiles, not sarcastic, ironic, self-deprecating smiles- than he has in the entire series so far. Every single time Jessica gives him crap about something, he’s not frustrated and defensive like he can be with Foggy and Karen, he seems genuinely amused by her. And perhaps that’s because it’s clear very early on that Jessica respects and admires him. That she’s actually willing to forsake her loner tendencies to work with him. And while she will not fall into taking him half as seriously as he takes himself, she accepts that he is Daredevil.

Almost instantly upon meeting Jessica Jones, Matt treats her like a friend and an equal. There’s no hiding from her, no angst driven urge to protect her from himself. She would never put up with that crap. They’re a team. She can handle it. And because of that he can be both Matt and Daredevil with her.

Something he has never been able to reconcile with any of his relationships thus far.

Matt and Karen were drawn together because of their similarities- similarities which when combined knock them both off balance. They are both striving to be atone for every past sin. They are both striving to do it all themselves. They are both convinced- if they just try harder- they can save everyone. They can fix every thing. They can figure it out. While this can make them good friends, it makes them terrible at offering support and balance in a relationship. They need people who can balance them from spiraling out of control. People who can benefit from, and value their altruism. People who can let Matt and Karen’s tendency to strive towards the light inspire them to be better. People who will support them in their fight, while reminding them not to be martyrs. People who will love and respect their light, while not letting it consume them. That’s why Karen and Frank click together perfectly. And that’s why Matt needs someone like Jessica.

Jessica tempers Matt’s sense of purpose and Matt pulls Jessica into one.

Matt Murdock, who likes to think of himself as God’s soldier, who thinks the world is on his shoulders and tends to make everything his responsibility is the perfect balancing act to Jessica Jones’s refusal to play the role of super hero. To her utter shirking of the very idea that any form of special strength could suddenly make her responsible to use it.

They both have a tendency to be wallowing assholes. But they’re assholes that have very little tolerance with each other’s coping mechanisms and would drag each other out of their slumps real fast. Jessica will mock Matt for his self flagellating hero complex, and his inability to stop long enough for a rib to heal endlessly, and Matt would never stand for Jessica’s tendency to lock herself away and self destruct into a hot mess for months.

They both have pasts. And they both already know about each other’s pasts. In their brief time together they found a way to tell each other that they knew about the cards they were holding close, the ones they kept from everyone. And never once did either of them try to mock, exploit, or discredit the other person with that information.

Jessica doesn’t care about saving people. Matt cares about saving everyone. They both save each other- Jessica’s first time meeting Elektra is to slam a car into her, and the first time Matt is Daredevil around Jessica he saves her life

Jessica, while telling him his horns are stupid, still only ever supports Matt. She never tells him not to be Daredevil, even though she herself hates the idea of having to be a superhero. She understands what brought him here. And it seems to inspire her to stand up for something. To maybe be a little more than she was before.

So whether you love them as Bros or ship them romantically, I think it’s safe to say that Jessica Jones is the healthiest relationship Matt Murdock has had in a long time. And they just both deserve and need each other so much.
