Even though I don't think the virus on Dark Angel was planned in advance. At all.

Someone should do a gifset (if they want, I mean. Perhaps I can even do something like this when I get well, but it would be pictures instead of gifs, because I can't gif) about how I feel they essentially got lucky, and you could look back at some past things and almost trick yourself into believing that maybe they'd had some idea about it before writing it in season two. Almost.

Like, some ideas for this being Max's conversation with Original Cindy in "Meow" about how she's "poison." And that the best thing she could do is get out of Logan's life before she gets him killed.

And then that could easily be paired with Renfro telling Max in "Designate This" that she is poison (IIRC). And that it's her fault that a number of her siblings have gotten killed. And next on the list is Eyes Only.

But there's also the scene where Tinga's son, Case, has been given some sort of illness after he ate those lollipops that Lydecker gave him, that led to him getting a temporary barcode on the back of his neck with the number there being a phone number... Which they then called, and Lydecker said he'd only give them the cure for Case if Tinga traded herself for her son (which Tinga of course planned to do). Zack then talks about how Tinga made herself vulnerable when she let people in, essentially, and he then tells Max not to make the same mistake, as he looks between her and Logan (as he already knows how close the two of them are; and that she was willing to sacrifice her freedom for him once before). But you could argue this was foreshadowing the virus. Some of the stuff with Case is, arguably, similar to it. And then Zack tells Max not to make the same mistake when it comes to Logan, who is the one affected by the eventual virus.

Another "hint--though this is, perhaps, more of a stretch--is when Logan's legs stop healing from Max's blood transfusions. So, perhaps a clue that there was going to eventually be some sort of plot where their DNA couldn't mix.

But anyway...

Connections and the Lack Thereof

At this point, my lack of any appreciation (exaggerating… a bit) for Max is probably coming through loud and clear, but I also wanted to touch upon her actions/words/beliefs in “Proof of Purchase.”  I mean, don’t get me wrong, I know she cared a lot about getting rid of that retrovirus… but also, if she’d just stopped and thought for a bit, I’d hope that she would realize how unfair she was being.  (Then again, this is Max, so she wouldn’t.)

I mean, to rephrase her background and stance prior to that episode.  She escaped Manticore years in the past.  When she did, she was absolutely confused until she figured out how everything worked, at which point she turned self-reliant, isolationist, and very guarded.  Then, she met Logan — a very rich, especially relative to the times, very well-connected man whom she started working with/falling for — and was able to take advantage of his money and connections to further her own goals.  I mean, even what she was doing in “Proof of Purchase” was thanks to Logan; it was his money from selling his painting with a doctor that he found (with help from Lydecker).

Meanwhile, Alec just got out of Manticore.  He’s still figuring out how things work without orders to either follow or to contravene, acting pretty similar to how Max did when she got out.  He has no connections, no money — except whatever he was earning from the boxing that got him in trouble in the first place — and nobody he can turn to for assistance.  And then he receives a bomb right next to his spinal cord and both 1) orders and 2) a threat in order for him to survive, the first of which he’s been conditioned to follow and the second of which is innately something he’d respond to.

And yet Max has the gall to act… well, to act like herself.  For one thing, she wasn’t there during the scenes with White.  It wasn’t a situation of “he thought he could run his game on a bad guy” because he was kidnapped???  It’s not like he thought, ooh, lemme just step over here and offer my services to White and his transgenic-killers and then screw them over.  It was a bit more along the lines of oh, shit, I’ve been kidnapped… let’s pretend to help to talk my way out of it followed by a subsequent bomb-injection and well, damn, now I’m gonna have to actually follow through or I’m dead.  Him agreeing to help White was a matter of self-preservation, not of choice, and — whether he made the right decisions throughout the process or not — he wasn’t acting cocky; he was acting like he was trying to save his own life.  Which he was.

And then, as if Max’s bitchiness about that weren’t enough, there’s also the implication that he should’ve told her, or should’ve come to her… and I find this just absolutely laughable???  She acts (throughout the series, not just here) as if she’s the most welcoming person in existence, regularly being all why the hell didn’t you come to me? to Alec.  I mean, maybe he didn’t come to you because, whenever you saw him in eps 1 and 2, you told him in no uncertain terms how unwelcome he was?  (And, btw, kinda seemed like you’d be perfectly fine with him dying???)  Or maybe because he was raised in Manticore, where you dealt with your own problems or were a liability to the mission and were either re-brainwashed or killed?

Anyway, I just find it hilarious — in a bad way — that Max is sitting on this relative pedestal surrounded by money and connections, and she’s looking down on the guy who just got out of Manticore, is generally hated by both Max and Logan for the whole virus thing, and has nothing to his name for relying on himself to try and save his own life.

Max is being way too hard on herself here. She is that high-minded. But it says a lot here that she doesn’t think she is, but thinks Logan is (it hints at how much she does respect him, and surely partly why she falls in love with him, I think).

who are your favorite antagonists on tv? what do you think makes for an antagonist that you specifically vibe with?

Oh god this made me remember I’m perpetually behind on TV forever. I feel like if I’d finished Arcane I’d have a really good answer for this. I remember the boss in Into the Badlands being super effectively frightening.

I loved Elijah (TVD) when he first emerged as a villain! My feelings on Katherine from that show are so messed around and complicated by her later writing 😔

Lydecker was SO good in DA S1 ofc, you know my feelings on him. Flawless performance. The steely fanaticism, the almost grotesquely real glimpses of humanity that saved no one. Honestly I would have loved to get another full season of him playing off Renfro while Max trusts no one in the tangle but will take advantage of his utility.

Feels like this is maybe the easy answer but I love an antagonist with a fleshed out internal core. With their own code, even if it saves no one and is repulsive to common morality. I’ve loved Axe Crazy villains and also Affably Evil villains, and I often love Still Waters Run Deep type characters.

(Dang it once again I just FEEL that as soon as I hit post better/more specific answers will hit me.)

But honestly I think what makes me most vibe with a villain is usually a good heroic/protagonist foil. Push and pull, people with tangled together (or funhouse mirrored) ideologies, or just heroes and villains that shake up each other’s plans and maybe worldviews in more ways than just some punches to the jaw.

hey I hope you don't mind me asking but I'm super curious about your logan/max opinions, since I saw you said you don't ship them anymore? I've been rewatching s1 at a snails pace lol and very much going back and forth on my opinions of them as a romantic ship.

oh wow! no i don’t mind at all, i love talking about this show so much. (i’ve also been rewatching at a slow ass pace over the past year; the show is one of my favorite things on this earth but i’m now at the s1 finale and i’m not emotionally prepared to watch that yet.)

but anyway! you asked about max/logan. i think in season one they work in spite of some moments that i feel are...i guess condescending on logan’s part? (i’m thinking specifically of the moment in c.r.e.a.m. when he finds out his mentor faked his death to live with someone he’d fallen in love with; max points out that they were hoping to find him alive and he says “figures that someone like you would turn their back on responsibility”, and don’t get me started on when he starts treating her differently after talking with lydecker in pollo loco/throughout i and i am a camera that still makes me SO MAD.)

but that’s still them growing and figuring each other out and it could be forgiven as that. i think where things change are after season two where they both clearly still want to make things work, and while the virus is a dumb plot device to have it NOT work, especially since without it there are still plenty of reasons why it wouldn’t (she just survived and escaped from an incredibly traumatic experience, probably the worst one of her life, there’s the responsibility of all the new transgenics which she already felt responsible for there was no need to keep blaming her when something went wrong with them which is another rant for another day). but since the virus IS a factor, it’s incredibly frustrating to rewatch and see how careless logan is when it comes to being around her, especially when she clearly feels so angry and guilty about it. he’s the one who will potentially die, but she’s the one who has to live with having killed him and i don’t think he gets how she feels about that. (also i hate how he saw alec hugging her and went immediately to “SHE’S SLEEPING WITH HIM NOW” she TOLD you why and you aren’t listening is it me or do they deliberately write logan worse to make alec look better???)

i also ultimately think that while they loved each other by the end of season one and even throughout season two, by the beginning of season two they are not the same person either fell in love with anymore. does that make any sense? and i think there are ways that still could have worked, especially if the virus hadn’t been a factor, but both were trying to recapture what they’d been working towards and not really achieving it. i think they’d eventually realize they weren’t right for each other anymore (let’s be real, max would probably realize it first) and why.

i feel like all of this is WAY more than what you asked for and idk if any of it even makes sense, but i hope it does. 💕 you’re doing the lord’s work with giffing this series by the way (which i think i’ve said to you before, but i’m saying it again since people who appreciate this show are so rare)!

erik  has  a  bunch  of  insignificant  memories  that  stick  with  him,  though  the  most  notable  would  be  those  he  has  of  his  manticore  unit.  ben  telling  stories  about  the  blue  lady  in  the  middle  of  the  night,  listening  to  jondy  and  max  talk  to  each  other  after  lights  out,  the  moonlight  streaming  in  through  the  window  above  his  head,  the  first  time  lydecker  ever  looked  him  in  the  eyes.  there  are  others  during  his  time  as  a  ghost,  a  guy  seeing  erik  in  a  reflection  of  a  window  and  smiling  at  him,  a  kid  telling  him  he  has  “ cool  shoes ”,  a  woman  in  a  bright  purple  dress  offering  him  a  cone  of  ice  cream,  the  first  time  he  saw  a  stage  play  and  thought  one  of  the  actors  saw  him  suffocating  a  dude  in  a  pew  or  the  time  a  homeless  man  gave  him  some  food  while  erik  was  wounded  and  sitting  on  the  curb.  honestly  9  times  out  of  10  the  insignificant  memories  he  has  are  times  where  either  a)  someone  is  kind  to  him  or  b)  erik  is  feeling  particularly  vulnerable.

     they were designed to be the best. to be faster and stronger and smarter than their competition, but they weren’t invincible, cut a transgenic and they still bled -- shoot one and they could still die. zack grasped blindly at her hand, the same hand that she was using to press down against the bullet sized hole in his chest, her fingers were slippery in his and the pain was making it difficult to think but he tried. tried to figure out how she had ended up there, how she had gotten roped into lydecker’s games, tried to think of what ploy lydecker had made that had gotten her there but the why didn’t matter, all that mattered was that she was there and it was his fault.          it was his fault for everything. if he had just stayed away from her, if he’d never let her as close as she had gotten then none of this would be happening.

            zack squeezed his eyes shut against the pain and made a sound, a hummed kind of grunt of barely contained agony, blood spilling past his lips and down the sides of his face.   he clenched teeth and he held her hand tighter, using it as an anchor to keep himself awake, keep himself from passing out but it hurt. hurt to even breathe. as far as he could tell the bullet had missed his heart but the sound he made when he inhaled was wet and quickly getting wetter. it had gone through a lung, he was suffocating, drowning.

   he could hear her through the fog, the emotion that choked in her voice and he hissed a sharp exhale as he forced himself to look at her, to see her through the pain and the dying. there was so much that he still had to do. he had to tell max about the others so that she could do what he never could and keep them safe, he had to call ben -- he had to make sure that he was still doing his routines, that he wasn’t getting lost and he had to tell her, he had to tell her everything. he couldn’t die now, but maybe it wasn’t up to him. maybe it never had been.

Ok ending thoughts… This one was ridiculously tense.  Like. It was like too much!
