The Storm Series

Top Gun, Iceman/Maverick, E

Eight years after Maverick and Iceman meet at TOPGUN, Maverick is running the program and Iceman is badly injured in combat, which finds him sent back to Miramar to teach until he's fit to fly again. Things move pretty fast after that.

I'm proud of many things about Storm. It was my first major work for Top Gun, and I'm really happy with the characterization. The way the characters and their relationship evolve through the series—I'm proud of that, and I'm proud that I was able to pick up the series after eight years and write two more installments that belong in the universe with the first two. Despite all the ways I had changed as a person and a writer in the time between, I was able to slip back into it like an old coat, and that is something you strive for as an author.

Dreams of Impact

Top Gun, Iceman/Maverick, M

Maverick's trip in Darkstar takes him further than he ever imagined possible.

When I was a baby writer, I wrote a lot of really long stories. For several years, I worked with another writer on a collaboration that surpassed 200k words, and we never finished it. That was by far my longest work, but many of my stories pre-2010 are 10k, 20k, 50k.

Now it's rare that I write something that long. Part of that is that I learned how to say a lot without that many words. Pithy was a word I heard constantly in grad school, and I needed to learn how to do that. I have, and I'm a much better writer for it. I'm proud of that.

There are a lot of other reasons that I don't write long, multi-chapter epics anymore, everything from writing professionally to my health, and to be honest, sometimes I miss it. Dreams of Impact offered me a wonderful opportunity to get back to that kind of writing. I enjoyed writing the story very much, and I'm proud of how it turned out. The longer, more-plot heavy story muscles had not been flexed in a while, but I guess I still got it.

Magic leaves a trace, and part of the curse stayed in her blood, and Sorsha never forgot what it was like to be the wolf. Even after her mother transformed her back, the wolf lived still, tucked behind her breast.

I love magical realism, and I love making things into fairytales, and I love finding ways to fit discordant things together so they seem completely natural. I did all of those things very well in this story. It was also a gift for a dear friend who is also an excellent writer, and she absolutely lost her gotdam mind when she read it, and I am proud of that.

This story is a standalone piece, but it was also—for me—an exercise (an exploration, maybe) in two very specific things. (It doesn't matter what. What does matter is: Not long after I had posted this, I talked to a couple people—dear friends but also writers I respect—about it once they'd read it, and they both told me how well I had done those two things, even though I hadn't mentioned them anywhere. I'm proud of that. It's extremely gratifying to know you can hit a target even if it's a target no one else can see.)

so i've been thinking... maybe undertale fans should be more open to checking out UT AUs! i know some of us might be inclined to think they're not as good as "the real thing," but there's really a rich, creative community behind them. not only that, but it's fun to make your own too! here are some of my own recommendations:

you can't go wrong with the old classic Tachimukae! Kimi wa Kakkoii! (Face It! You're Cool!) the animation is a love letter to the worldwide UTAU community of the time (2009) and features cameos of practically every UTAU that existed back then, including those made by young amateurs overseas. this was a Big Deal when it dropped.

and if you were wondering, UTAU isn't limited to japanese. english voicebanks are possible too!

you can get started with UTAU by installing either the open source, multi-platform OpenUtau, or by switching your locale to Japanese and installing the original UTAU for Windows. i'm personally used to UTAU, but OpenUtau is in active development so i think it's worth trying out :)

you can think of a very simple UTAU voicebank as a folder containing .wav files of Japanese syllable sounds, like か.wav (ka) and so on. so just get your nicest microphone, a reclist (recording list), and start recording! OREMO and SetParam are highly recommended software for recording and configuring UTAU, as they're made specifically for it.

you'll find many ways to record an UTAU, but a CV (consonant-vowel) reclist is definitely my recommendation for an absolute beginner. even Wayne can do it...

Bless you, this made my day 🥹😭 I stared at this message for a long time before starting to write a reply. I feel like I’ve never learned how to properly reply to compliments, maybe because in my head they’re reserved for creators only, and seeing my recs as a “creation” is something I struggle with? I went through a bittersweet realization last year, that led me to accept that my biggest contribution to fandom might be the reclists after all - something I do fast, and well - over single recs - something that requires much more time and energy - despite my initial intention of making this a single recs blog.

I’ve made my peace with it now, it’s all good! So it really means a lot when someone says nice things about my fandom attitude and overall enthusiasm because being a force of positivity and encouragement is all I want! Even when I lacked spoons for it, reccing has always felt like self-care and has brought me so much joy. Being a long-time lurker, I can safely say that this blog has built my confidence and forever changed my relationship with fic and fandom. I’m so grateful for all the love and appreciation I’ve received ever since the beginning. That tiny project that was supposed to be a temporary distraction during COVID has now been around for over 3 years and my love for the ship and for this community only grows.

Welcome to another update post! This time there's a few big news and others that are just simple quick updates.

1. Chance Reclist, the multilanguage reclist for dummies

We're starting strong!

We present the Chance Reclist, 2024 edition. This reclist appeared around 2020 or 2021, but now it's getting a very much needed update!

For those curious, it's a multilanguage reclist based on phonetics from Spanish language. Don't know Spanish? Don't worry! A phonetic list is included in the Readme.

The reclist makes UTAUs support Japanese, English and Spanish at the same time. As well, you can make your own custom languages. All of this without the need to imput phonemes with weird formats like @ and & 's.

There's a version already released at UtaForum, and the upcoming update (v2.3) will fix issues about missing phonemes.

When you click on the picture, you should be driven to the download link!

The v2.3 update will make everything be uploaded in a Drive folder directly, to prevent the need to download .rar or .zip files that might be outdated as new versions of the reclist come to light.

2. Website Updates

The thing everyone was waiting for...! ...or maybe not?

Our website is still in development BUT the Early Access website is still running and has frequent updates. Yay!

When a voicebank is not up for download, the button will turn red on hover. When the voicebank is available, the button turns blue.

In the future, both voicebank versions will be in a single folder wich means the buttons that make both versions different will be merged into one. That gives you quick access to both UTAU and OpenUTAU versions.

3. Tumblr Updates

There's not much thing to say about this. We added a To-Do List page! This way you can see wich voicebanks or reclists are in development, how many wiki pages we posted, etc.

You can access it at the bottom of the left menu. For mobile users... We always recommend the desktop version. But Tumblr is always forcing the App so..

4. Wiki Pages

As you know, since the UTAU fandom incident we had in mind to post our UTAUs in several wiki pages, even if that means that some of them will end up outdated.

So we're keeping track of them in the To-Do list. Since it's many UTAUs and sites, we're using a number intead of more specifications.

Yeah... we will have to fix the formatting.

5. Voicebanks in Development

You can already see the list of specifications in our Early Access Website and To-Do List, but here's a bit more of info.

Caché Völatta is in BETA, wich means he has many reviews to go through until the stable release. However is usable with some tweaks here and there and is open for public usage.

Heccan will use the v2.3 Chance Reclist and have three new voicebanks: [Libra] wich is the core voicebank, [Judgement] wich is the soft-whisper append, and [Coupier] wich is the pack of the two mentioned. As well she will have new artworks, icons and logos!

They destroyed his very soul, tearing him apart and shaping him into something new and never seen before. They took everything he had been and left him with ashes and bones. Soulless. He killed his creators and went on with his life. Then he met Spider-Man. Things started to change. Something inside him, something that had come out of the ashes and was a nightmarish, terrible thing, sat up and took notice. My Boyfriend's a Murderbot by Fredegund. Spideypool, Explicit, 55k words. Summary: Wade Winston Wilson is ugly. His skin's inside out. It ripples and moves every second of every day, at constant war with the cancer. Vanessa put on a brave face for him when she first saw the changes, but it turns out even she can't stomach the sight for long. He's ugly and alone and nothing will ever be good in life again - If only that were his only problem. But Weapon X is at it again, under crisp new management, turning orphans into super slaves and bringing out the big guns to make sure nobody interferes this go around (namely one Pool comma Dead). So now, not only is Wade alone and ugly forever, but he's got a bit of a pest problem in the form of a black-clad murder-happy man spider with a collar around his neck and an unhealthy obsession with tying Deadpool up. Recently, I’ve seen a few authors worry about crossposting their drabbles on AO3, wondering if maybe the notification emails might annoy readers, or if AO3 is the right place for stories that short. Beyond the argument that it’s your archive to do what you please with, I’d like to share a few shorts that live on AO3 and that had an impact on me, personally. It's my hope that maybe, if you’re also wondering whether or not to share tiny fics there, the perspective of one avid reader might help you make your decision.

Disclaimer: this is not a comprehensive reclist of drabbles/microfics (for that, see @drarrymicrofic and pick any of the incredible lessons in short form this extremely talented community shares on a daily basis!) These are a few personal favourites that I discovered specifically on AO3. This list would be incredibly long if I included every short fic that lives in my bookmarks and had an impact on me, so I limited myself to fics under 500 words. (1 wolfstar, the rest is drarry). Like there's oneshots with 10k words and so many series and one fic has 300THOUSAND words and is still a wip somehow?? Which don't get me wrong, I love long fics as much as the next guy and won't complain for people writing so much about stucky. Like imagine the kind of time it takes to do that, blows my mind every time. BUT ALSO (and this is where I get to my point lmao sorry for spamming you) how do you have TIME to read ALL THAT and take notes on all of it and sort them into that system you talked about and like.  HOW??? First of all, thank you for your lovely words, I'm quite overwhelmed by the praise & enthusiasm. ❤ Believe me, there's absolutely no reason to fear me.😜 The rec lists are really just my way of trying to give back to a fandom that has given me so much joy (and pain, but I kind of asked for that, so it's ok--one has to be a bit of a masochist to be a Stucky shipper).

I definitely have a preference for long, character-driven stories and slow-burn romances, which by definition, you can't really do in a 5K oneshot. That's not to say that shorter fics inevitably lack depth--not at all! There are writers who are absolute masters at creating whole worlds in just a few thousand words, and indeed it can be a bigger challenge (and a skill!) to tell a decade-spanning story in fewer words and to decide when something does not have to be spelled out in great and sometimes unnecessary detail, and to just trust that your readers will get it. But yes, in the end, we all have our reading preferences, and I just really love to get lost in a long story. If you offered me a well-written fic that features all my favorite tropes and the exact kind of characterizations that perfectly align with my headcanons and you'd say "hey, you want the 5 or the 50K version of that?", I will almost always go with the latter option.

Still, I've actually gotten much better at reading shorter fics over the past year... maybe I should do a rec list for Great Fics under 10K... would anybody care for that?

Now as to your question how I manage to read ALL THAT. I don't know? Honestly, I'm certain there are people who read way more than I do, but yeah, I read A LOT of fanfic, it's true. The funny thing is, I'm not even a very fast reader, or no... the reading itself doesn't take up a lot of time, but thinking about fics, taking notes, writing comments does. The whole spreadsheet insanity was not only born out of a desire to track my reading stats, but also to put down my thoughts and to really ruminate on what I'd just read. Before I got more actively involved in fandom, I didn't really have anybody to talk to about this, but the thoughts and feelings still needed to go somewhere. And now that I've started making rec lists, I'm so glad that I did this because I can pull from them when I'm looking for specific tropes/genres/etc.

Finally, ever since I started beta-reading, I've gained a WHOLE new appreciation for how much thought and heart and time and--yes!--work goes into a fanfic. And all that with little to no guarantee for recognition or even any sort of response at all.

Fanfic writers are goddamn heroes. To borrow your words: I envy them. I admire them. I fear them a little.

All four Todoroki siblings run away together after Rei burns Shouto. I love the characterization, and how the author draws on their own experience as a foreigner working in Japan, and how they did their research on missing child cases and child homelessness in Japan (it doesn't go hugely in depth but I appreciate the authors' notes discussing this, even if it's, well, incredibly tragic. There’s more light hearted cultural notes as well!)

make this feel like home -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/21852745 -- 27k words, complete -- we already rec'd this to you but adding it here for completion. A character-focused Todosibs fic with EXCELLENT portrayal of sibling relationships. I re-read this one A LOT.

Dragon Head, Snake Tail -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/17195510 -- 61k words, incomplete -- Another Todosib favorite that deals with canon and also an AU in which Rei got a divorce and everyone mostly grew up away from Endeavor. I love how the sibling relationships are depicted, but I also love how the author is a huge kanji nerd who fully lean's into Horikoshi's love for punny names and the long authors notes explaining how they came up with every new name in the fic. It's occasionally bittersweet but mostly a fun & humorous fic.

Twin Swap -- https://archiveofourown.org/series/1867879 -- 55k words, on hiatus with 2 complete arcs -- do you want Todosibs AND great villain characterization? (well mostly Fuyumi & Touya, but Natsuo is there for a bit too). Anyways the fic is mostly pretty lighthearted in tone, but it's also not afraid to hit hard in the characterization department, and I really love how this author wrote all of the League members. I re-read this one a lot.

No Such Thing As a Hopeless Case -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/16806328 -- 14k words, hiatus (and right on a cliffhanger too!) -- All Might accidentally kinda adopts the league of villains? Again, great LOV characterization, and I think you'll like how it explores the societal factors and personal tragedies that lead them to and keep them at the margins of society. also, some really terrible puns, which are my favorite thing

could i but teach the hundreth part -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/12558048 -- 5k words, complete -- a post-canon outsider-POV fic of Class 1-A visiting and taking care of a retried All Might. It’s just short and sweet.

Missing Everything -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/30128547 -- 52k words, in progress -- AU where Izuku doesn't learn of All Might's secret during the slime attack, but manages to befriend him through his civilian identity. Recommending this for the really interesting (to me at least) characterization of All Might and examination of his flaws and the toll of his career, and recently it's gotten into some interesting exploration of the details of the Hero System with the beach clean up.

Q.A.B. -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/27665101 -- 18k words, complete (w/ a sequel just starting out!) -- a really excellent social media fic in which Izuku stays quirkless and doesn't go to UA but does gain a following online for his quirk analysis and hero blogging. Also features great characterization of Todoroki, Kaminari, and some of the Vigilantes crew.

Yesterday Upon the Stair -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/8337607 -- 460k words, complete. You're probably aware of this fic since it's the highest hit count in the fandom, but I really think it fits your requirement and writing and character work! I know some other people who think the writing and character work are mediocre though, which I'm baffled by... but YMMV? The beginning is weaker and my absolute FAVORITE part is the Nighteye arc, which is the last 20% of the fic, but I would say it really starts to hit its stride by chapter 9~10? If you aren't enjoying it by then it's probably fair to expect it won't catch your interest later.

I can't believe no one has written any "self insert as Bakugo" fanfics... - https://archiveofourown.org/works/17662220 -- 70k words, infrequent updates -- I like this one for taking a weird as hell premise and REALLY rolling with it. It's somehow pretty similar to a lot of more positive takes on Bakugo's relationship with the Midoriyas while also being very much it's own thing. The author is NOT "far out of high school" though -- it's hilariously clear from the SI's reactions to certain quirks that the writer started this while taking lower division universtiy physics (and personally I love that). Also appreciate SI!Bakugo's war with Nedzu to get proper counseling and mental health support for class 1-a after all the shit they've been through.

It's Over, Isn't It (it's only yet begun) -- https://archiveofourown.org/series/1269638 -- 66k words, abandoned series with several complete stories -- AU where All Might dies rescuing Tenko from AfO but other than that it's a heartwarming fix-it! Same author as YUTS, very positive portrayal of Nighteye, excellent character writing for many other characters.

Subject: A Comprehensive Report -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/16037609 -- 83k words, infrequent updates -- another very popular fandom staple, but hey it's really good! A social media fic with quirkless Izuku interning with Nighteye as an analyst. Has some very interesting exploration of the legalities of Hero Society and how the status quo developed.

For Fools and Utopias -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/22547254 -- 89k words, updates regularly -- okay grace is the one who rec’d this fic to ME but to anyone stumbling across this reclist on tumblr, THIS FIC IS A MUST READ. Absolutely the BEST, more thought out and gutting portrayal of the flaws of the hero system, and how the different characters struggle with it. This fic GOT to me, hard, I’m still thinking about it a lot. Takes place roughly a decade post-canon, in an AU where Izuku never met All Might or went to UA, and nothing got fixed (yet! they’re trying!!). Features absoulely STELLAR characterization of Midoriya, Shinsou, Todoroki, his sibblings, Ragdoll, and more!!

My favorite Thranduil-Gimli relationship dynamic, without question, is when they both cling to the pretense of disliking each other but secretly everyone knows they actually like each other a lot, and this fic delivers. I have a known soft spot for damsel!Gimli and berserker!Legolas, which both play in this story, but Thranduil is the real star, and I love him dearly.

I Walked With You (Once Upon A Dream) by The_Dwelf

Summary: Kori is just a regular Dwarf, except, he isn't. He is Gimli's reicarnation, he has been dreaming of his past life since he was a child, and now that he's old enough to leave Erebor, he's certain of his condition. With unexpected help from a very shocked Elvenking, he will find a way to rejoin Legolas, at any costs. Angst, fluff, porn and (spoiler?) a happy ending.

I’m recommending this fic for so much more than just the reclist prompt – it’s a wonderful reincarnation AU complete with fluff, angst, delicious hurt/comfort, and just a little smut, for spice. But Thranduil is amazing – and in fact the driver of the plot here, the one trying his hardest to reunite the two lovers – no matter what he has to do in the process.

Northern Babylon by icarus_chained

Summary: After four years fighting the war in the south, Gimli and Legolas have come back to their home city of New Rhovanion changed, and perhaps for the better. Gimli tries to make Elven Councillor Thranduil understand this, and understand that maybe there's hope for more than just Gimli and Legolas as well.

So I love this fic for the combination steampunk/solarpunk setting (I might be wrong about those things; I don’t really know aesthetics) and the AU just a tilt off from canon but still following the same general trajectory – the worldbuilding is amazing and I wish there were 100k of it. But this fic as it is is amazing – a serious, hopeful, painful conversation between Gimli and Thranduil in which Thranduil’s history and trauma is palpable to the reader even if we don’t know much about how it would have played out in this story. And a conversation in which they come around to grudging respect for one another.

This is one of my favorite specific tropes - Legolas and Gimli are returning to someone’s home, and one of them is injured. This time it’s Legolas in Mirkwood, and the process of healing leads to some...revelations. Of a sexual nature. Read for a particular characterization of Legolas and a Thranduil who doesn’t quite get his son but cares nonetheless, and thinks Gimli is good for him. :) Do mind the tags, though; the consent is . . . it doesn’t cross the line to dubcon for me, but it isn’t perfectly straightforward, either.

Precious Childhood Memories by Enide_Dear

I couldn’t decide whether to put it on the funny list, the Thranduil list, or the meet-the-family list, but I finally decided on this one just because – way to smash the trope of Thranduil and Glóin making the single exception to elf- or dwarf-hatred and instead let them bond over their sons’ misery. It will have you howling.

This is not really about Thranduil, per se – it’s more about a delightful reimagining of Legolas and Gimli and the situations in which they might have seen one another before the Quest – and about the delightful sweetness and powerful emotion of them coming to know and to love one another for real. So this isn’t Legolas/Gimli. In fact, Gimli doesn’t appear at all – and thus this fic doesn’t really deal with Thranduil’s prejudices, or lack thereof. But I had to include it because it’s one of my favorite Legolas-and-Thranduil fics out there – a really deep, complicated exploration of what living in an ongoing siege does by necessity to relationships, and the ways that love and care persist through these struggles – even if they do have to grow a little twisted. I recommend all of Thundera Tiger’s fic, but any pre-series Mirkwood fic deals with this same thing in such loving nuance.

Optional: Angels treating Cas like their baby brother :3 Cas can be somewhat put out by it or not. Actually maybe bonus if he IS, bc they are all angels of the lord and relative by rank and experience, And Yet [whoever] just cannot help but be *points* Baby

trope: Anything with like the Winchesters caring about and caring for Cas. I just rly like Cas being taken care of :') pls wrap him in a blanket and pat his shoulder brusque-softly in ur emotionally repressed way Dean

bottom line my emphasis tends to be more on character and plot. I can't do plot without character, the relationships - whether ship or gen - are important to my enjoyment of a fic. I can sit thru a lot if the characters/character dynamics are good and chewy lmao like u can rly sink ur teeth into it

eldritch horror angels are a bonus. Give me unfathomable trueform angels, I feel like I don't see that enough

Like yes flex ur sexy sexy angel powers pls. There's one ep where my notes just say "ANGEL SMITE ANGEL SMITE / HEAAALING." Season 6 Cas where he is more out of touch with humanity and more brusque was also intriguing even tho he was like that bc of extenuating circumstances. But him flexing his sexy angel powers sure was sexy

Human AU* but like asterisk bc I will take human AU if the plot is compelling and/or the characterization still manages to capture that je nais se quoi of canonverse. If they are, like, middle age dads being domestic, as an example, tho, then I can probs do that, I just like.. have limited capacity for career-based AUs for the sake of it, if that makes sense... But character/character dynamics trumps all, like I said lmao.. I've sat thru scenarios/setups that lowkey dealt me psychic damage bc of the nature of the set dressing, bc I checked it out out of morbid curiosity but the way they did the characterization ended up working for me

fics that treat angels like literal physical feathered beings. Idk I just like... want the whole angel thing to be treated more metaphysically. They are multidimensional wavelengths of celestial intent in holy corporate/business attire visages but they are still very much multidimensional wavelengths of celestial intent the ballpark size of our Chrysler building. If the wings are treated too literally I find I start getting bored, ironically. This is ironic bc I'm a slut for wingfic. But with spn I find that a conventional kind of wingfic/angel conception where the wings are just limbs with maybe some slight handwaved dimension-shifting stowing is.. slightly passe for my tastes. Unless it's like a forced manifestation or sth. Just like.. get the metaphysics involved, tie it to angelic grace. Something. Make is racy. But not too racy, the whole wings-as-erogenous-zones thing I'm a bit over too, xenobiology to humans would just be biology to these beings, it doesn't make sense to me to be like "oh they have a tail and it's EXTRA sensitive," like are you suggesting your arm/armpit is an extra special species-typical erogenous zone too?

All right, so: anyone who knows me knows the following things.  One, I’ve been in fandom for 23 of my 36 years; it is very difficult to faze or shock me.  Two, I actually do believe in letting people ship what they ship and write what they write; if I don’t like it, I just steer clear, and I expect people to do me the same courtesy.  Three, there are some things out there that I don’t like, and for very specific reasons, and I only talk about those things when people ask, because discussing them otherwise is pointless.  I do not abuse people just because I dislike what they’ve written, but, anon, you’ve just made it necessary for me to give an account that some people in Pacific Rim are going to remember very well, largely because they had the same unsolicited negative experiences with the author of DCWT that I did.  I will try to make this brief.

In December of 2013, I saw Pacific Rim for the first time.  I fell head over fucking heels.  That’s an understatement, really; to this day, Newt and Hermann are two of the characters that I’ll defend more fiercely than most of the others in my backlog, barring Aziraphale and Crowley.  I started writing Anthology without intending for it to ever be a series.  What’s currently the first chapter was only ever meant to be a stand-alone, but by the time I had managed to add nine more installments to it, I thought it was close to done.  It had evolved into a series, but how much of one, I didn’t know.  By that point, I had also managed to write a couple of stand-alones, Become What We’ve Always Been being the chiefest amongst those early ones.  I bring it up because it figures into this social account.

By that point, in my participation in PR fandom, let’s say January of 2014, I had received several obnoxious messages from a Tumblr account called elementals_ao3.  This account claimed to be the “fandom assistant” of the author of a piece on AO3 called Designations Congruent With Things, which I had not investigated because a) I was extraordinarily busy reading my new friends’ stories in PR fandom and the writing I was doing on my own account, and b) well, this weird elementals account was being obnoxious and messaging me about it, and I don’t take kindly to being harassed to read something by a stranger.  It was in January that I consistently started getting messages from friends saying, roughly, Hey, can I talk to you?  There’s this fic called DCWT that’s getting super popular as fast as your Anthology is getting popular; have you read it?  It’s disturbing in extreme ways and doesn’t tag or warn for the ways in which it’s disturbing.  The author’s got this weird sidekick that keeps messaging like all the high-profile PR blogs it can find, and it’s getting really obnoxious.  Not only does the fic not warn for what it’s doing, but the author seems really unrepentant and thinks they’re all that.  Thanks for writing something I can read to get away from the weird, cult-like DCWT hype.

And I thought, oh God, it’s that fic I’ve been messaged about by that elementals account a handful of times.  Huh!  But I still didn’t look at it until near the end of January, possibly early February, because that was around the time when cleanwhiteroom read Become What We’ve Always Been and left me a comment.  When someone I don’t know in a fandom I’ve newly entered comments on some of my work, I consider it common reciprocal courtesy to check out their work and comment on at least one or two pieces (more if I end up genuinely enjoying their work).  So, armed with the wary knowledge that this was not only the fic that the elementals person had been harassing me about, but also the fic that had traumatized so fucking many of my new friends, I decided to take a look at it.  I chose a bad night to do that.  I’d been doing laundry for about four hours; it was three in the morning when I finally clicked.  I think there were between ten and twelve chapters of DCWT in existence at the time I read.

I had never before that point been physically ill due to a piece of written media in my life.  Enough said.  Many of you know that I’m fine with exploring twisted relationship dynamics as long as that’s what I know and accept from the base-canon, but to see a relationship that I saw as so essentially stable and hopeful warped beyond recognition, and also have no clear warnings on either the piece of fiction or in the concerns that friends had sent me?  Yikes.  Maybe now you understand why Precursor-possessed Newt is such a trigger-point for me, and why I’m so disgusted by the majority of the new film’s content.  I backpedaled in a hurry.  And continued to get the occasional creepy advertising message from elementals_ao3, and saw a number of comment threads in which cleanwhiteroom completely dismissed readers’ concerns about the lack of warnings.

To put it bluntly: harass me (or have your “assistant” do it for you) and show me that you have no regard for your readers’ well-founded advice, and I will never have a reason to think well of you or what you’re writing.  Furthermore, I couldn’t stand to see Hermann suffer, and, worse than that, I couldn’t stand to see real people I care about suffer.  People can love DCWT all they want, but this fic has some seriously messed-up social history that ended up on my doorstep solely because the creepy elementals person, whoever they were, decided I should be bugged and bugged to read because I was another high-profile-ish writer in the fandom.  Or maybe that wasn’t the reason.  I will never know the reason, given DCWT vanished from AO3 sometime between 2014 and now, and CWR and elementals likewise fell off the radar.

One thing I can tell you, though: the more trauma people set before me, the more determined I was to keep adding to Anthology.  For every reader that seemed rabidly in love with DCWT, there was one or more hurt by it.  Upset people I love, whether intentionally or not, and I will do my utmost for them.

In some ways, I must partly thank that situation for the sheer determination that permitted me to develop Anthology to the extent of what it became.  My CoT series in Good Omens fandom was nowhere near as long then as it is now, and I had never written something as sustained and involved as Antho in my life.  It was the strangest two years (2013-2015) of my online existence, but I learned just how much writing I can get done when it feels necessary.  Pacific Rim fandom is singlehandedly responsible for the largest group of people that I have ever bonded and stayed in contact with (yes, even more than Good Omens fandom, at this point).  Oh, the stories I could tell you from the experience that was Shatterdome ATL 2015.  It was wonderful.

(So, you know, I guess the lesson here is: don’t assume that everyone will love a thing just because it’s popular.  YMMV has never been a sounder clause.  I’ve never told this story in its entirety in post format, although heaven knows a number of people have heard it verbally by now.  Life in fandom is sometimes really freaking bizarre, and this situation is the weirdest I have to offer.)

okay. lemme preface this by saying i barely scratch the surface when it comes to classic rock. in fact i just like the “popular” classic rock bands, because i’m a hipster loser (and i grew up on some of this stuff and don’t really have much of an interest venturing further but hey, who knows, maybe i’ll expand my spotify library in due time)

there are people on this website in the CR fandom who are so much better equipped to answer this, but u asked me, and i never really bothered to integrate into the cr fandom anyway because i feel like theyre all cooler than me and i just wanna sit down and listen to like, the same two albums on repeat, but anyway. to answer your question…

it really just depends on what genre you like. what kind of music you want to get into; i can sit here and tell you to listen to pink floyd and go on about their significance but i can’t make you Like them yknow?

surely you’ve heard of them; if not, they caused a huge uproar across the world called beatlemania. think of like…tumblr, as a planet, and the beatles is the newest, hottest anime of the season, and everybody’s got a huge heart boner for them. because that’s basically what it was.

here are some of their songs that have been in my head for the past few days: drive my car (rubber soul, 1965); eleanor rigby (revolver, 1966); and if i fell (a hard day’s night, 1964)

revolver is the most recent album i’ve listened to, they have more but the next proper Album is sgt. pepper and that feels…like. so much. it’s a Huge Album, both content-wise and…history-wise? anyway, it’s very intimidating for me and i think i want to take my time with it before i rush in

i’m just gonna get led zeppelin (late 1960s to 1980, some reunions sprinkled here and there,) out of the way, now, too. (genres: hard rock, blues rock, folk rock, heavy metal)

let me just say right here: i hate jimmy page. as a person. and i honestly think most of his solos aren’t…that great. but for real, i won’t tolerate any of that ugly shithead on my blog and just because i like LZ doesn’t mean i condone any of the shit he did.

(you’ll notice a trend, especially in the older bands, that controversy is super common. u can’t..really get into classic rock without having to see the darker side of your faves. it sucks, nobody’s perfect, and i don’t agree with separating the artist from the art, but it does get hard to like certain music when you know the shit that happened with certain artists.)

Anyway! that being said, i truthfully only really listen to led zeppelin and led zeppelin ii. some physical graffiti but, eh. So, if you wanted to get into lz, you’re askin the wrong person, is what i’m saying jfkgsdj

did you know appetite was originally a flop album but after this dude got the guys at MTV to play the music video for Jungle at like 5am, guns n’ roses BLEW THE FUCK UP. Everybody know about them practically overnight. it was surreal and really cool, apparently.

and did you know axl played the synthesizer in paradise city? that’s adorable. i fucking love him.

the first four tracks in this EP are from their very first EP ever recorded - it Sounds like it’s taken from a live show but they dubbed in the audience in post, to make it seem like they had huge crowds attending their shows when in reality that wasn’t the case. (their first ep was released in december 1986, they had loyal fans but the crowd wasn’t that rowdy until after appetite came out)

believe me when i tell you. don’t listen to one in a million. or like, do. but i’m not gonna fight anyone about this. it’s fucked up. i’m not defending axl at all and i actually struggled with liking guns after i listened to it.

on dust n’ bones and double talkin’ jive is izzy stradlin doing vocals (the second indiana boy, the one who left indiana first) and he’s regarded as the most unnderrated member in gnr by like everybody. so much so that it’s almost…too much. but like basically he was addicted to drugs and everything and then he sobered up when everyone else in the band was still hooked and he was like “wtf i’m out” and axl was like noooo :(

uhhhh this album is also fucking perfect but i get sad listening to it sometimes so i try not to? very emotionally driven work. but like, where UYI1 was mostly passionate and angry-ish based, UYI2 is much more contemplative and uhh. sad. i guess.

EVERYONE - axl, izzy, steven, duff, And slash made the band. after steven was kicked, gnr lost a huge part of what made them stand out, what made the band unique.
